All 4 I Know What You Did Last Summer Movies, Ranked
Image
He might not have as much of a legacy as Ghostface, but the hook-wielding Ben Willis left a mark in the surge of '90s slasher movies when he told a group of irresponsible teens, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Cutting into the competition of masked killers in 1997, the film helped boost the careers of stars like Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

The horror franchise returned this year with a legacy sequel that (in keeping with the legacy sequel title trend) is also simply called "I Know What You Did Last Summer"). Hewitt and Prinze reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, and a new group of teens are forced to confront past mistakes that turn a hit-and-run into a horrifying killing spree.

Incredibly, this is the fourth movie in a series that has spanned almost three decades. There have been highs and lows,...

‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’ Has Slasher Fans Nostalgic for… Jack Black in Dreads?
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark honors fringe cinema in the streaming age with midnight movies from any moment in film history.

First, the Bait: a weird genre pick and why we’re exploring its specific niche right now. Then, the Bite: a spoiler-filled answer to the all-important question, “Is this old cult classic actually worth recommending?”

The Bait: Hook. Line. Stinker. In a Fun Way!

Warning: The following contains spoilers for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (2025)

I genuinely want to know if anyone warned Jack Black about the post-credits scene in the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” He’s not in it, but it’s sure to draw attention to a mostly forgotten misfire from much earlier in the “Minecraft Movie” actor’s career.

Black was 29 years old when he played Titus Telesco, a white Bahamian pool boy with a weed habit and dreads.

Judge Dredd | Brand new movie on the way
Image
Taika Waititi and Drew Pearce are trying to bring Judge Dredd to the big screen again – more on the very welcome story here.

Now this is slightly unexpected, but certainly interesting. A third feature adaptation of the much-loved 2000Ad strip Judge Dredd is heading to the screen, and it already looks as though it has a bit of momentum behind it.

Taika Waititi is set to direct the new film, which is going to be working from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The latter’s last high profile movie was the underappreciated The Fall Guy, and for Waititi, his last feature was Next Goal Wins.

The pair are reportedly friends, and have been looking for a project to collaborate on. Then they landed on the pages of 2000Ad, and the idea is for the new movie to launch a universe of Judge Dredd screen work.

We’ve heard that before,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Copycats: Three International Slashers That Stole the Formula
Image
While the revenge slasher didn’t begin with I Know What You Did Last Summer, it did renew interest in the concept. And not just in Hollywood; film industries abroad also wanted to cash in on this get-in-get-out kind of horror format back then. Scream, as innovative and revitalizing as it is, wasn’t the easiest movie to echo or translate overseas, but Jim Gillespie and Kevin Williamson’s 1997 collaboration was prime for copycats. Anyone who’s seen enough of these familiarly plotted outings knows the ratio of copying isn’t quite 1:1, but there’s no mistaking the source of inspiration.

One of the earlier, and perhaps more recognized, I Know What You Did Last Summer “ripoffs” is from a region that wasn’t exactly known for its slashers. At least not yet. Prior to South Korea’s cinematic renaissance, which began in the late 1990s, the government put...

“Sarah feels incomplete without the child that has been promised to her and her husband, Abraham, by God. Jennifer Love Hewitt Teases the Jaw-Dropping Ending of the New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’
Image
The wait for Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise is finally over.

This Friday, for the first time in nearly three decades, Hewitt reprises her final-girl role of Julie James in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025). The legacy sequel reintroduces Julie as a psychology professor, one who fittingly specializes in trauma. Now single, Julie is living a happily quiet life after narrowly surviving two rounds of attacks by murderous fisherman, Ben Willis (Muse Watson), in the late ‘90s.

However, Julie’s past soon catches up to her when Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonders) pays her a visit and requests her help in dealing with an all-too-familiar problem. A vengeful Fisherman copycat is now targeting Ava and her friend group of 20-somethings in Julie’s hometown of Southport, North Carolina.

For Hewitt, the decision to return...

Soundtrack Mix #35 | Frozen in Flux: Chris Cunningham
Image
Chris Cunningham is an embodiment of a time and place, of 1990s and early 2000s British underground cool, a moment when avant-garde art forms and personalities were enmeshed with the overground mainstream. Pop culture at large was still up for getting weird and transgressive, even during primetime, and commercials and promo videos were full of libido and artistry (just think of iconoclasts like Chris Morris and music-video talents like Hype Williams). When I was a teen, two DVD collections were pivotal to me. The first was Palm Pictures’ Directors Label series, which compiled the visionary commercial and music-video work of such directors as Cunningham, Williams, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn, and Stéphane Sednaoui, many of whom broke into feature filmmaking around the year 2000. The pipeline of working at an ad house, then making a promo, then directing a feature was a route to admire and...

James Gunn Confirms Fan Suspicions About Cancelled DC Projects
Image
When he's not filmmaking or touring to promote his latest projects, James Gunn can be found replying to fans on social media. But his latest interaction might shock many. While it's no secret that Warner Bros. has canceled many projects, including titles connected to DC, the filmmaker revealed that the production company has shelved more superhero titles than we realized.

Over on X/Twitter, Gunn replied to a fan under the alias @the_Bradster007, who made a thread on DC Movies that entered development but never came to fruition. The list featured some canceled projects, like a scrapped thirdMichael KeatonBatman movie, Nicolas Cage'sSuperman Movie, aCyborg solo film, and a solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, to name a few. His response was short, stating that the user made a great list but added that there's more. Unfortunately, he didn't clarify what he meant by that, but considering the list that the user made,...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Trailer Hooks Into the Continuation of the Beloved Franchise
Image
We are but one month away from the arrival of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and the hook-handed gods have shined down mercifully upon us with a fresh trailer. The only other official teaser came out months ago, in April, so we’re beyond grateful to witness more of the undoubtable greatness that will come when the film slashes into cinemas on July 18. Featuring the return of the franchise's final couple — Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson — the trailer sees the past and present collide on a brutally graphic scale.

The new film appears to be leaning more into a Scream-like whodunnit than the two (kind of three) titles that came before it decades ago. In the original movie, filmmaker Jim Gillespie and writer, Kevin Williamson, took audiences on a deranged journey featuring some of the hottest young names of the time.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Helmer Addresses Brandy Norwood’s Potential Return to the Franchise
Image
Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox have had their slasher franchise renaissance over the last few years thanks to the return of Scream, and soon, it will be time for two other iconic actors to reprise their roles from one of the best genre films of the ‘90s. On July 18, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will step back into the chilling world of I Know What You Did Last Summer in the Jennifer Kaytin Robinson-helmed follow-up. It’s been nearly three decades since audiences last caught up with Hewitt’s Julie James and Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson in the original sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. But, their stories aren’t the only ones that audiences want more of.

While we know that the new movie will pick up with the legacy characters and toss some newbies into the mix, what will it do...

Leslie Grace to Play Diver Swallowed by Giant Sperm Whale in Survival Thriller ‘Propel,’ Altitude Launching Sales in Cannes (Exclusive)
Image
Having landed Latin Grammy and Billboard nominations as a singer/songwriter, turned heads for her debut movie role in Jon M. Chu’s musical drama “In the Heights” and sadly seen her superhero universe entrance as the lead in “Batgirl” nixed by Warner Bros. accountants, Leslie Grace will next be taking on something completely different: the insides of a giant sperm whale.

The fast-rising Hollywood star is set to take the lead in survival thriller “Propel,” billed as “‘Gravity’ meets ‘127 Hours’ underwater,” from director Felipe Vargas (“Rosario”) and about a diver’s fight for survival after a boating accident leaves her for dead.

Altitude has come on board for international sales and will introduce the project, described as a “pulse-pounding elemental thriller that will leave you breathless,” to buyers in Cannes next week.

Written by Jeremy Marwick and inspired by real events, “Propel” will see Grace star as Kate Acosta,...

An Unmade I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel Could Have Changed The Franchise Completely
Image
Given the juggernaut that the "Scream" franchise became, it feels like that property is the obvious and uncontested champion of the wave of teen horror films that it spawned. Not so fast, Ghostface — while other contenders like the "Urban Legend" and "Dracula 2000" movies petered out long ago, the Fisherman manages to keep coming back for more.

That's right: Another Kevin Williamson-penned horror film, 1997's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has spawned two sequels, a reboot series in 2021, and a legacy sequel due out in 2025 (at the time of writing). While that's not yet enough to rival "Scream," it's impressive that the franchise is far from dead, especially considering how many bizarre twists and turns the property's continuity has taken over its relatively short lifespan. The central hook of the first film — a group of teens cause and then cover up an accidental death, only to find...

How Sylvester Stallone Really Feels About His Judge Dredd Movie
Image
Sylvester Stallone's "Judge Dredd" is not remembered as one of the best sci-fi movies ever, to say the least. Lambasted by critics and disliked by audiences, the 1995 film earned a disappointing $113.5 million at the global box office against a $90 million budget and remains conspicuously absent from lists of Stallone's finest films.

To his credit, Stallone hasn't attempted to bury his futuristic flop. Instead, he's been known to discuss the film when the opportunity calls for it. In 2006, the star addressed some of the issues "Judge Dredd" had while answering fan questions for Ain't It Cool News:

"I think, from what I recall, the whole project was troubled from the beginning. The philosophy of the film was not set in stone – by that I mean 'Is this going to be a serious drama or with comic overtones' like other science fiction films that were successful? So a lotta pieces just didn't fit smoothly.

Judge Dredd (1995) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
Imagine if, in modern times, the role of let’s say, DC’s Sgt. Rock went to the literal Rock, Dwayne Johnson. Imagine that he was given creative control over the high budget state of the art project despite having no idea who Sgt. Rock even was initially. Finally, imagine he decided to make it in the vein of all of his films, hiring Kevin Hart to be his sidekick, and royally pissing off fans of the source material along the way. That’s the best modern analogy I can come up with for what happened to 1995’s Judge Dredd. A film that had crew members allegedly taking bets on their director’s life expectancy, an NC17 rating, and Sylvester Stallone screaming I Am The Law!!! This is what happened to Judge Dredd.

Judge Dredd debuted in 1995; a year packed with iconic films. At the time, the superhero craze hadn’t fully kicked in,...

10 Best '90s Comic Book Movies, Ranked
Image
Comic books have inspired some of the most successful movies of the 21st century, from The Dark Knight and Avengers: Endgame to the Fox X-Men and Sony Spider-Man films. Although these films have raked in billions of dollars for Hollywood, it took a while for the medium to earn its respect. The 1990s stand out as a particularly unique and divisive decade for comic adaptations, with superheroes slowly gaining steam despite a campy, low-budget treatment.

While the 1990s saw some comic book disasters, like Steel and Spawn, it also produced some entertaining and faithful adaptations of classic comics, from superheroes to science fiction movies. Not only was the decade a boom for the comic book industry behind the scenes, but it also spawned a variety of enduring films, even if some weren't well-received at the time. Whether it's a gritty revenge movie or a fun superhero flick, most comic fans...

Obey: home invasion horror thriller coming from I Still Know What You Did Last Summer director
Image
Danny Cannon has racked up a lot of directing credits over the last 35 years, including credits on episodes of CSI, CSI: Miami, Dark Blue, Nikita, Shameless, Gotham, Pennyworth, and Gotham Knights, among others – but he’s best known for making a couple of feature films back in the 1990s: the poorly received Sylvester Stallone comic book adaptation Judge Dredd and the slasher sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (which is indeed canon to the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel that’s being made). Now, Deadline reports that Cannon has signed on to direct a high-concept horror thriller called Obey, which Altitude will be presenting to potential buyers at the European Film Market.

Written by Brandon and Kurtis Birtell (Medal of Honor), Obey will tell the story of a couple struggling to save their marriage who must learn to put their differences aside if...

8 Major DC Characters Who Almost Appeared In Gotham
Image
Eight major DC characters nearly appeared in Gotham, but circumstances kept them from making their debut. As a prequel to the Batman mythos, Gotham was well-known for its creative reimagining of iconic villains and allies, offering an opportunity to witness the evolution of characters like Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman. Over five seasons, the show balanced its own unique twists with homage to the source material, delivering a dark yet compelling narrative about the descent of Gotham City into chaos.

However, the final season of Gotham was truncated, reduced from its intended length to just 12 episodes. This shorter run, coupled with various creative decisions, meant that several characters and Gotham storylines were ultimately scrapped. While the show's conclusion and its full embrace of the Batman legend was certainly thrilling, it’s hard not to ponder the characters who almost made it to the screen, many of whom are known for their appearances throughout the Dcu timeline.

Freddie Prinze Jr. & Jennifer Love Hewitt Are Not Main Character in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Sequel
Image
While plot details for the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel remain under wraps, we're now learning that the reboot will not focus on Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt's characters. The two will reprise their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James from the original film and its 1998 sequel, but according to Prinze Jr., he and Hewiitt are "not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination." Prinze Jr. recently appeared on Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, where he discussed how co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) integrated Julie and Ray into the upcoming movie.

Gotham producers detailed their plans for their scrapped Metropolis series and why the plug was pulled on the series. Hot off their run on the Batman villain-focused DC series, showrunners John Stephens and Danny Cannon began developing a Metropolis show similar to their previous work. It would have explored the city most commonly linked to Superman before he arrived on the scene, instead focusing on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. DC officially announced the project in January 2018, but they pulled the plug on it by 2019.

In IGN's oral history regarding the ten-year anniversary of Gotham's premiere, Stephens revealed exactly how they envisioned Metropolis, and that he still don't know exactly why Warner Bros. ended up shelving the series before it even began.

"In the course of the pilot, it really featured Lois and Lex as the main characters. Geoff Johns had some really cool ideas about how the show...

Before The Front Room, Brandy Was 100% the Best Part of This Sequel to a Horror Classic
Image
Brandy Rayana Norwood is an icon in every sense of the word. She's been adored by fans for generations, defining many viewers' childhoods as it was hard to find a medium in the '90s that she wasn't completely conquering. From singing to acting to dancing, she's always excelled, but some might be confused to hear that she's had quite a presence in horror cinema. Currently, she's leading Sam and Max Eggers' The Front Room an A24 psychological horror film that pits Brandy's Belinda against the mother-in-law from Hell (Kathryn Hunter). But this isn't the first time Brandy has made her mark on a spooky flick. In 1998, she co-starred in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Danny Cannon's direct sequel to one of the genre's most influential movies (if only its sequel could say the same), I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Geostorm | Dean Devlin says it’s not his film, but open to the Devlin cut
Dean Devlin
Dean Devlin is the credited director of the much-loved Geostorm, but says it’s not his film – yet he’d do his own cut, and possibly Geostorm 2.

I think I’ve managed to hide it well over the years, but I bloody love 2017’s Geostorm, the kind of goofy, muddled, deliciously enjoyable mad space film that we don’t seem to get anymore. In part because Geostorm cost an enormous amount of money, and didn’t make it back. See also: Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall, an intended franchise-starter, that also doubled up as a franchise-stopped.

The credited director of Geostorm, starring Gerard Butler, is Dean Devlin, but he’s not the person who finished the movie. Instead, the film was overhauled in post-production, and Danny Cannon came in to do extensive and really quite easy to spot reshoots.

Dean Devlin is now doing promotional work for his latest project, the TV series The Ark.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Legacy Star Is Ready to Return for Sequel
Image
The I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel has been gaining considerable steam with an official release date, the announcement of the film's new cast, and a firm date to begin shooting the project all now in place. Of course, the key to any good legacy sequel is a tangible connection to the original film's story or characters, and while the stars of the original movie, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have confirmed they have seen a script for the sequel, another star just learned about the film. But she's more than ready to face-off with the fisherman again.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the Descendants sequel scheduled to air on the Disney Channel, singer and actress Brandy, who co-starred as Karla Wilson in 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer alongside Hewitt and Prinze Jr., said she was unaware of a sequel being made.

Will Benson Forever: Celebrating 25 Years of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Image
When people think of Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, they usually consider it a solid slasher. It certainly had an engaging lead cast—Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe—and a script from Scream creator himself, Kevin Williamson. It even spawned an Amazon Prime spinoff series and is being featured as part of a “High School Horror” category on the Criterion Channel.

But that’s not the film this article is about. This is about the 1998 sequel that has a less positive reputation: Danny Cannon’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which brought back Hewitt and Prinze Jr., but not Gillespie and Williamson. A lot of people tend to think of it as a lesser follow-up that is best left forgotten.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of I Still Know, which is even getting a...

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was Written by Bryan Wolford, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

The 90s get a bad rap as far as horror movies go. Without the 90s we would have missed out on such films as Candyman, Scream, and the original It miniseries. Let’s be real, all of us of a certain generation hate clowns now because of that miniseries. Thanks a lot Tim Curry. One thing the 90s had going for it was the re-emergence of the slasher boom. In the 80s you couldn’t walk into a video store without being overwhelmed with slasher films. Everyone was trying to cash in on the goodwill that the 1978 Halloween movie had given us. When Friday the 13th showed that you...

Judge Dredd screenwriter Steven E. de Souza on the film’s violence and marketing
A few years ago, director Oliver Harper made a documentary called In Search of the Last Action Heroes, which was described as “a comprehensive retrospective of the ’80s and ’90s action film genre.” One of the people interviewed for that documentary was screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who was a major contributor to the action genre in those decades, working on the likes of 48 Hrs., Commando, The Running Man, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hudson Hawk, Ricochet, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Street Fighter, among others… with one of the others being the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone comic book movie Judge Dredd. In a moment that didn’t make it into the final cut of In Search of the Last Action Heroes, de Souza discussed the issues that Judge Dredd ran into, including bad marketing and a struggle to secure an R rating. Harper has been kind enough to share that deleted scene online,...

The Best Prequel TV Series Ever, Ranked
Image
The advent of streaming services has allowed television to take greater risks and turn trusted series into expansive properties and broader universes. A heavy stigma used to surround prequels, and audiences often considered them to be tired exercises to extend a story when a conventional sequel couldn’t be in the cards.

TV has found ways to thrive through prequels and, in some cases, these extra chapters can greatly improve the original series in unexpected ways. There have been many impressive prequel television series over the years, from House of the Dragon to Fear The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul.

Caprica 1 Season, 19 Episodes

Ronald D. Moore's 2004 reboot of the '78 campy space opera, Battlestar Galactica, set new standards for serialized science fiction. The success of the SyFy original led to a satisfying expansion of the show's universe, like the 19-episode prequel, Caprica.

Judge Dredd: Is It One Of Stallone’s Worst?
Image
1995 – it was the best of times; it was the worst of times. While the peak era of action movies was beginning to wane, multiplexes were still packed with decent action films, and icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were still packing them in. Meanwhile, second-tier action heroes like Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme still tried to punch their way onto the A-list. It would never quite happen for those two, with both starring in direct-to-video movies by the decade’s end. But 1995 was arguably the last year in the nineties when Stallone and Schwarzenegger were at the top of their game. Schwarzenegger’s career would only really falter at the end of the decade, with him never really able to recapture his former box office glory following his run as the Governor of California. Stallone would be luckier, with him able to reinvent himself in the mid-2000s...

Freddie Prinze Jr. Describes ‘Miserable’ Experience with ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Director
Image
Freddie Prinze Jr. might be considering a return to the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise, but the star doesn’t have many fond memories of making the original slasher flick.

In a recent interview with Too Fab, the “She’s All That” star called the making of the 1997 movie — one of his first major screen credits — a “miserable” experience that almost caused him to quit acting. Specifically, Prinze said his issues stemmed from clashes with the director Jim Gillespie, who wanted to cast Jeremy Sisto, then best known for “Clueless,” but was pushed to hire Prinze by the studio and screenwriter Kevin Williamson.

“It’s not that we weren’t on the same page, I knew what the correct choices were for the Ray character. He wanted a different actor, a really good actor named Jeremy Sisto, who I know and I like and respect very, very much,...
