Tony Oliver, head writer of the good old Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is admitting that it was a mistake to cast a Black actor as the Black Ranger(Walter Emanuel Jones) and Thuy Trang, an Asian actor, as the Yellow Ranger. The news comes after the investigation documentary Hollywood Demons’ April 7, 2025, episode doubled down on the superhero crime-fighting series.
The episode “Dark Side of the Power Rangers” zeroed in on key details that while MightyMorphin Power Rangers debuted on Fox Kids in August 1993 and went on to become a cultural phenomenon during the next three years, it was only after two seasons that an assistant highlighted that matching actors’ ethnicities to their ranger colors perpetuated stereotypes. One aspect of the Power Rangers franchise that has kept fans invested for many years is the emphasis on legacy. From Mighty Morphin’, the series has followed a mostly singular timeline, with each series taking place in the same continuity as the previous. Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang left Power Rangers midway through season 2, and the franchise would have been drastically different had the original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers remained on the team. With three cast members set to exit the series after not getting their contracts renewed, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers essentially had two options. Either Jason, Zack, and Trini were going to be recast, or the show would have to introduce three new characters. Power Rangers went with the latter and introduced Rocky (Steve Cardenas), Aisha (Karan Ashley), and Adam (Johnny Yong Bosch).
The Power Rangers franchise would never be the same again after the exits of the original Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers for several reasons. Firstly, the arrival of three new characters set a precedent for “replacement Rangers,” a tradition that would be carried over through the rest of the show. Power Rangers would...

Nearly every leader and main character in Power Rangers is a Red Ranger. From Jason Lee Scott to Amelia Jones, these Rangers serve as the faces of their respective seasons and are typically the most popular members of their teams. However, for a variety of reasons, not every Ranger to ever wear Red is always given their due.
Everyone loves a Red Ranger, but some of Power Rangers' most famous heroes remain underrated. In some cases, this is because they weren't actually their season's protagonist or the leader of their team. Other times, Red Rangers get overlooked because of the season they come from. And, in some cases, a Red Ranger can be a leader, a main character, and from a popular season but still be unfairly maligned by fans who don't understand them.

Power Rangers fans have a lot to look forward to, given the amount of franchise content hitting several platforms next month. One such piece of content is the highly underrated 2017 Saban's Power Rangers Lionsgate movie, which hits Peacock on December 6.
Power Rangers, which franchise creator Haim Saban returned to produce, follows a group of teenagers who gain newfound powers they must use to protect Earth from an ancient reawakened threat. The Saban's Power Rangers reboot, which was the third franchise film installment, loosely adapted the pilot episode of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series "Day of the Dumpster." The movie stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Scott/The Red Ranger, Rj Cyler as Billy Cranston/The Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart/The Pink Ranger, Becky G as Trini Kwan/The Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor/The Black Ranger. Johnny Yong Boschs Adam Park had the difficult mission to replace Walter Emanuel Jones Zack Taylor in Power Rangers, but the second Black Ranger ended up becoming an iconic character himself. While the first Power Rangers team changed midway through season 2 following the exits of three cast members, the original Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers had all become fan favorites by that point. This is why replacing Jason, Trini, and Zack with new characters was risky.
Still, introducing three new Power Rangers characters was arguably a much better approach than recasting Jason, Zack, and Trini. The Stone Canyon trio Rocky, Aisha, and Adam were introduced in The Ninja Encounter, during which they proved their strength and loyalty. In the following episode, The Power Transfer, those three were chosen by Zordon to become the new Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers. Of those three, the one who carved the biggest legacy in Power Rangers was Adam.

Nearly every hero in Power Rangers is a skilled martial artist. As the only people capable of fending off the countless evil forces that inhabit their multiverse, being able to fight is a mandatory skill. And while no team of Rangers is without talent, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are among the most disciplined and the best trained.
All 10 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers rank among the best fighters in the series. Some have studied martial arts for their entire lives, while others translate their backgrounds as dancers, divers, or gymnasts into combat. The Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger is one of the most iconic Power Rangers images. When most fans picture it, they think about the original Red Ranger, Jason Lee Scott. Through no fault of his own, Jason's successor, Rocky DeSantos, is far less remembered.
Rocky DeSantos, the second Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, never left as much of an impact as his predecessor. Stuck in the background behind Tommy Oliver throughout Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, rather than being the star as Jason had been, Rocky received little focus and never developed as a character. And just when Rocky started to become more interesting in Power Rangers Zeo, his time in the series came to an end.

Things can be even trickier to understand when there are specials and moves that exist outside the main television series but are still canon.

A new Power Rangers comic fixes a 27-year-old mistake by focusing on the franchise's third Yellow Ranger, Tanya. Tanya never appeared in Power Rangers again after Turbo. Most Zeo Rangers eventually returned to the franchise, with Tanya being the only exception.
An upcoming Power Rangers comic book centered on the franchises third Yellow Ranger is fixing a 27-year-old mistake about the TV show that always bothered me. While most Power Rangers comics take place in their own continuity and do not interest much with the main Power Rangers chronology, they are a great opportunity to revisit the TV show through different lenses. Many of the Power Rangers comics follow the Mighty Morphin characters, but they have incorporated names from other seasons through multiverse, time travel, or standalone stories.
As much as I enjoyed the recent Power Rangers seasons, some of my favorite stories in recent years have come from the comics.

Power Rangers is a hilarious series. For older fans, elements like the campiness and the common sub-par acting and special effects lead to unintentional laughs. The franchise also strives for laughs intentionally, typically including dedicated comic relief side characters, as well as a Ranger whose main role in the team dynamic is to be the funny one.
Every season of Power Rangers features a 'clown' on the team, but some are funnier than others. Some of the funniest Rangers in the franchise are also the dumbest members of their teams, with their lack of brains played for laughs, while others possess more unique quirks. How funny a Ranger is comes down to both the writing of their character and the quality of their actor's performance.
Waldo "Dustin" Brooks is the Dumbest Among a Team of Children
Dustin Brooks is the Yellow Ranger in Power Rangers Ninja Storm. Dustin Brooks was played by Glenn McMillan.

A potential Power Ragners show has been cancelled after 2 years in development at Netflix, leaving plans for a reboot in limbo. Hasbro now seeks a new creative partner for the Power Rangers franchise. The reasons for the show's sudden cancellation have not been revealed.

The Power Rangers Turbo series introduced a storyline called The Millennium Message, but it was never followed up on due to changes in the writing staff. The Millennium Message would have revealed a force that could stop the villains, but the audience never got to see who it was. Instead of continuing The Millennium Message plotline, Power Rangers Turbo focused on passing down the titles and powers to a new generation of Rangers.
Despite the fact that the Power Rangers franchise hinted at a major storyline for the crime-fighting teenagers in Power Rangers Turbo, the Millennium Message plot never actually happened, and only for one small, subtle reason. Power Rangers Turbo is a 1997 Power Rangers series that lasted one season and is the fifth installment in the Power Rangers franchise. Despite being a continuation of the franchise, Power Rangers Turbo saw a whole horde of changes, most importantly in relation to the cast.

In Power Rangers' extensive back catalog, a certain Power Rangers team member comes out on top for appearing in the most episodes. The early '90s saw the start of the iconic franchise, bringing the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to screens, and from then on the influence of the Power Rangers has stretched across decades and generations with various titles depicting the team of heroes. More than 20 series later, Power Rangers maintains a cult following with a prized franchise formula that follows a group of youths able to morph into the titular Power Rangers, harness special super abilities, and operate tremendous assault machines to ward off episodic antagonists.

These actors not only played a Power Ranger at some point in time, but also became proficient in some form of martial arts before stepping into the franchise. In this way, they are martial artists both on-screen and beyond it as well.
The Power Rangers franchise first began in 1993 with the premiere of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The series revolves around a group of powerful teenagers who are taken in and mentored by the wizard Zordon. Through training and the use of assault machines called Zords, the teens are able to morph into the Power Rangers. Their main enemy was Rita Repulsa. Since then, the Power Rangers have appeared in various additional television series and feature films that are still being created today.

The original Green PowerRanger appears in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, raising the question of whether Jason David Frank filmed scenes for the reunion. Original Tommy Oliver actor Jason David Frank died in November 2022, leaving an enormous legacy within the Power Rangers franchise. It must be noted, though, that Once & Always was filmed before David Frank’s passing.
Power Rangers: Once & Always is the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ 30th-anniversary special, which sees the original heroes from the Mighty Morphin era reuniting to fight a robot version of Rita Repulsa (voiced by Barbara Goodson). The Power Rangers reunion addresses the original Yellow Ranger Trini’s (Thuy Trang) fate in the story, and introduces a new character – Mihn (Charlie Kersh), Trini’s daughter. Could Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always receive a sequel? The direct-to-streaming Netflix movie reunites the titular team in honor of the 30th Anniversary of the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The Power Rangers franchise is an ongoing action series that follows a team of youths who can transform into armored, super-powered heroes. This post contains spoilers for "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always."
It should come as no surprise that "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is completely filled with nostalgia. Unlike most other anniversary specials for the beloved tokusatsu franchise, "Once & Always" does not feature several iterations of Power Rangers meeting, like "Forever Red" or "Once a Ranger." Instead, this is entirely focused on the first series in the franchise, the multi-season "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and its two generations of Rangers.
The special focuses on the return of Rita Repulsa, who has got herself a new robot body and brings tragedy to the Rangers. When Repulsa's armies start attacking Rangers around the world, new heroes will rise and the Power Rangers will see their legacy and their abilities tested. This Power Rangers: Once and Always review contains spoilers.
Power Rangers: Once and Always, with a brisk hour-long runtime, does the impossible for a nostalgia focused special. It isn’t concerned with playing solely to cheap memories and easy jokes for casual fans, and isn’t obsessed with deep fan lore, either. Its primary focus is instead on just being the next entry in these characters’ lives. It’s doing something new and not just playing the hits.

Austin St. John, who played Jason in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, eventually exited the show and would only return to the franchise a few years later. Though there have been dozens of Red Rangers, it is difficult not to think of Jason when it comes to Power Rangers leaders. Despite being part of Zordon’s team for less than two seasons, Jason wrote his name in Power Rangers history as one of the most iconic Rangers that ever was.
Of the original Power Rangers who fought Rita Repulsa’s first monster in "Day of the Dumpster", only David Yost’s Billy was present in the final Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episode. After Jason’s exit from the team, it became common for the Power Rangers to rotate their roster, be it due to in-universe or behind-the-scenes reasons. For example, there were two Power Rangers’ Red Rangers during the Mighty Morphin era.

The “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” are reuniting with revenge over Rita Repulsa on their minds in Netflix’s 30th anniversary special.
“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always,” which launches April 19 on Netflix, follows the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ quest for vengeance 30 years after Zordon formed the team. While in the midst of a global crisis, a previous threat resurfaces as Rita Repulsa sets her sights on the group.
“After all these years, I found a new body” Rita Repulsa says in the trailer as the Blue Ranger Billy Cranston (David Yost) is in disbelief, saying, “No, it can’t be.” “It’s time for revenge,” Rita Repulsa declares before delivering a devastating blow that leaves the rangers reeling.
The special’s trailer also reveals Rita Repulsa is responsible for the death of Trini, the original Yellow Power Ranger, as Trini’s daughter, Minh (Charlie Kersh), states “she killed mom — we gotta destroy her.
