The long-awaited Black Mirror season 7 is now streaming on Netflix, and as expected, fans have wasted no time watching all six brand-new installments. But while each offers its own disturbing glimpse into the dark side of technology and is entertaining to watch, none have dethroned "San Junipero" as the greatest Black Mirror episode ever. In David Carson's 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations," a mad scientist named Dr. Soren (Malcolm McDowell) has been galavanting about the galaxy destroying stars and wiping out entire planetary systems. His goal is to alter the gravitational fields throughout the quadrant in order to "steer" a free-floating energy ribbon into a nearby planet. The ribbon, audiences learned earlier, was nicknamed the Nexus, as the ordinary rules of time don't apply inside of it, and all points of history happen simultaneously. The Nexus can scoop up humanoid species, and deposit them into a psychic realm of their own imagining, more or less granting their every wish. The Nexus is the "Star Trek" version of Heaven, imagined as a rogue spatial phenomenon. I guess Belinda Carlisle was wrong when she declared that Ooh, Heaven is a Place on Earth.
Soren is ultimately successful, and steers the Nexus into the planet Veridian III,...

Rihanna goes blue as Smurfette in the new trailer for the upcoming Smurfs movie, in which she not only debuts her new character, but also sings “Don’t Stop the Music” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”
After an introduction from Rihanna, the clip begins with a mash-up of the original Smurfs theme and “Don’t Stop the Music” as the “coolest Smurf in the whole village” dances alongside her buddies. Their idyllic existence gets shattered, however, when Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is kidnapped and Smurfette must lead them into the real world.
A sleepy cover of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” — which gets rudely interrupted by DJ Khaled yelling over it — soundtracks their journey, which results in a somewhat amusing introduction to Papa Smurf’s irascible brother (Nick Offerman) and the Paris Neighborhood Watch Smurfs. Check out the full trailer below.

When 9-1-1 returns for the second half of Season 8, the show will have a treat for viewers. In a set video shared by Anirudh Pisharody (Ravi Pannikkar) on his X account, the actor confirmed that his character will return when the season resumes. In the video, Pisharody zooms out of his face while lipsynching to a medley of a popular social media reaction sound and "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carlisle to reveal that he's wearing his character's Lafd turnouts in front of his trailer. This will be a relief for Ravi's fans, who the last update they got from the showrunner Tim Minear did not inspire confidence. "We may see Ravi again this season. I would love to see him again this season actually," Minear told TV Insider. "I'm working on a thing right now where one of the characters you just mentioned, hopefully, will make an appearance,...

Think of yourself as a guardian angel.” In a previous teaser, the quote was extended to include, “Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here… keep these dreamers safe.” ...

When Charly Bliss came out of Brooklyn with their excellent 2017 debut Guppy, they were snappy Nineties alt-rock revivalists, bringing to mind the Breeders, That Dog, and Veruca Salt with their churning riffs, sharp melodies, and frontperson Eva Hendricks’ coffee-achiever pip of a voice. They followed that LP with 2019’s Young Enough, mixing in some synth gloss with their guitar buzz. It’s been five years since their last release (during that time Hendricks relocated to Brisbane, Australia, and her brother Sam, the band’s dummer, became a dad). On Forever,...

Diane Warren lined up an all-star girl group including Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan to sing “Gonna Be You,” from the film 80 for Brady.
“I love great artists,” Warren said Thursday at Deadline’s Sound and Screen Film event. “I love iconic artists.”
Warren had written songs for Estefan and Carlisle before. Parton was a first.
“She doesn’t need me,” Warren said of the country legend.
Producer Damon Elliott coordinated recording all of the artists in different locations. Carlisle was in Mexico City and Estefan in Miami, for example.
“None of them are in L.A.,” Warren said.
During her long music career, Warren has written for such varied artists as Trisha Yearwood, Aerosmith and Starship. Warren said she still gets turned down, but her persistence often pays off with big hits.

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.

This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 3, episode 4 "San Junipero."
Leave it to "Black Mirror" to make an episode involving euthanasia somehow hopeful. The Emmy-winning "San Junipero" has been hailed as "the show's finest hour" -- it topped our ranking of episodes from the first three seasons of "Black Mirror" in 2016, and was again near the top in our updated ranking of all five seasons in 2022. Now, with "Black Mirror" season 6 on the way in June 2023, it's as good a time as any to go back, revisit old episodes, and perhaps wax nostalgic about the highs and lows of the series.
Consider it a form of "immersive nostalgia therapy," of the kind that Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) undergo in "San Junipero." The episode is unique for "Black Mirror," not only because it's a love story with what could be interpreted as a happy ending, but because...

It’s not Oscar season without songwriter Diane Warren. Los Angeles was the place to be this week, especially if music is your scene. The pre-game Grammys celebrations rolled into town, luring everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Trevor Noah to hit the scene to see Latto, Anitta and other new chart-rising musicians perform. Meanwhile, Oscar nominations narrowed the field as the awards season raged on, with AARP holding a glittery awards show as “Elvis” stalwarts Austin Butler and Baz Luhrmann continued to be the Energizer Bunny duo on the party scene. Tom Brady quit football and started his Hollywood career this week, too; apparently no one told him that releasing a movie in January is not prime time.
