2023 WGA Awards: Full winners list in 23 categories
Image
Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Over on the small screen side of things, “Better Call Saul...

Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King’s affection for Carrie Preston — and her fan favorite character of Elsbeth Tascioni — laid the groundwork for the just-announced spinoff.

As we reported Tuesday, CBS has handed a pilot order to Elsbeth, a one-hour drama centered on the scatterbrained but brilliant lawyer that Preston played on both The Good Wife and its first offshoot The Good Fight.

Good Wife Spinoff, Matlock Series Starring Kathy Bates Among CBS Pilot Orders
Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife (2009)
CBS is looking ahead to the 2023-24 TV season and beyond.

The network has announced details of its development slate for next season, and one of the exciting projects is a third entry in the Good Wife universe.

The potential series would feature Carrie Preston's fan-favorite lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni.

"After her successful career in Chicago, Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney, utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD," reads the official synopsis.

The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King will write the pilot, which will be directed by Robert King.

While Preston first appeared in the role on the original CBS series, she also had a five-episode arc on the recently wrapped spinoff The Good Fight.

When that show ended last year on Paramount+, there were rumblings about another series in the universe.

CBS also picked up...

‘The Good Fight’: Andre Braugher Teases His ‘Flamboyant’ Role in Shocking Final Season
Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald in The Good Fight (2017)
The Good Fight looks to go out with a bang. Literally. Producers Robert King and Michelle King’s (Evil) satiric, absurdist and topical legal series heads into a sixth and final season in which Reddick & Associates attempts to rebrand itself while civil violence erupts around them. For the drama’s last hurrah, the stellar Andre Braugher joins the talented cast to bring this much-praised spinoff of the also top-notch The Good Wife to a fiery finale. The double Emmy winner plays Ri’chard (formerly Richard) Lane, a self-described “flamboyantly” confidant rainmaker who is set on revitalizing the firm so that it “will be on the tip of everyone’s tongue” in Chicago. Braugher shares what’s on the season’s docket. Did you always want to work on The Good Fight, a magnet for TV and Broadway’s best? Andre Braugher: I was in California during The Good Wife and...

‘Evil’ Bosses on Andy’s Flashes, Father Ignatius & More Season 4 Burning Questions
Aasif Mandvi, Katja Herbers, and Mike Colter in Evil (2019)
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Evil Season 3 finale “The Demon of the End.”] After a couple of insane finale cliffhangers — what else would you expect from Evil? — the wait for Season 4 is going to be long. Sure, we’re wondering what the future holds now that Leland (Michael Emerson) used Kristen’s (Katja Herbers) missing egg and they’re going to be parents as well as what’s going on at the end there with Andy (Patrick Brammall) and Dr. Boggs (Kurt Fuller) gathering with the demons (and baby) in the under-construction addition to the Bouchard house. But there are also a few other lingering threads at the end of the season. We turned to creators Robert and Michelle King to get answers in addition to their teases about what’s next after those cliffhangers. What can you say about Season 4? Anything about when it picks up, the threads to keep in mind, a tone?...

Evil Season 3 Understands the Allure of Cults
Aasif Mandvi, Katja Herbers, and Mike Colter in Evil (2019)
This Evil review contains spoilers.

Evil Season 3 Episode 7

Evil, season 3 episode 7 “The Demon of Cults” is a fully immersive and self-conscious dive into almost everything the series is about. We get the conspiracies, possessions, brainwashing, love bombing, and the promise of a snippet of Sister Andrea’s (Andrea Martin) hair. David (Mike Colter) stands up the entity. Kristen (Katja Herbers) gets an inside look into clandestine operations. Ben(Aasif Mandvi) has his come-to-Jesus moment.

The case starts at a book-signing, the root of all evil. Dr. Paul, an exit counselor with 500 successful interventions under his ever-widening belt, doesn’t believe in things like demonic possession, but has come across a case which scares him silly. Wanna look? The glee with which Dr. Paul invites David and the others to peek in on his ward, Owen, is disconcerting enough to follow anywhere. By the time the team gets to the cheap...

Top Showrunners and Producers Make Gun Safety Pledge in Wake of Uvalde, Buffalo Mass Shootings
Image
A group of 200 top writers, producers and directors have signed an open letter backed by the Brady gun violence organization that includes a pledge to incorporate gun safety best practices into their shows and to scrutinize the use of firearms in storytelling.

The list of signatories (click here to see the letter) includes Shonda Rhimes, Bill Lawrence, Jimmy Kimmel and the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” writing staff, Michelle and Robert King, Judd Apatow, Steve Levitan, David Shore, Matt Nix, Dan Lin and Jenni Konner. The letter frames gun safety an urgent social issue for the industry to embrace, in the same way that intentional depictions of such topics as cigarette smoking, drunk driving, the use of seat belts, marriage equality and LGBT rights helped change cultural attitudes and save lives.

“As America’s storytellers, our goal is primarily to entertain, but we also acknowledge that stories have the power to effect change.

‘Evil’ Review: Season 3 Returns Nastier, Sharper, and Better Than Ever
Image
One of the consistent strengths of “Evil” has been its constant acknowledgment that faith exists in an untold number of forms. Whether taken in relation to a codified religion, a belief in the scientific principles, an outright rejection of both, or none of the above, this is a show with clergy collars and therapist couches that isn’t only confined to one or the other.

Enter Season 3, where the show ventures further into the idea that faith also applies to who becomes worthy of trust and allegiance. Even with a few extra words that don’t have to be slipped by Standards and Practices, the core “Evil” mission remains the same. The wonder trio of psychologist Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), newly ordained priest and accomplished Church assessor David Acosta (Mike Colter), and resident tech expert scientist Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) are still investigating instances of the unusual at the request of local Catholic officials.

Evil Season 3: How the Show Adapts to the TikTok Age
Steve Carlson in Deadlier Than the Male (1967)
Michelle and Robert King created Evil. What an epitaph that will some day make. Future generations will look back at Paramount+’s savior series with accusatory looks. As their occult science procedural creation moves into season 3, it appears the evil Kings won’t even get a day of rest. The show’s newly ordained priest couldn’t make it through his first sanctified day without succumbing to temptation, and his trained skeptics are enablers. This is why bad things happen to good people. It’s the Kings’ fault. They brought Evil into the world.

Evil follows Father David Acosta (Mike Colter), Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), a team of spiritual investigators who scrutinize paranormal occurrences to determine if they are miraculous, diabolical, or the result of faulty plumbing. They work for the Catholic Church, and answer to a wide range of higher powers.

In the Season 2 finale of Paramount+’s Evil, Katja Herbers‘ Kristen confessed to newly ordained priest David (Mike Colters) what viewers had known for quite some time: that she’d murdered serial killer Orson LeRoux and gotten away with it. (Read a recap.) Here, TVLine Dream Emmy nominee Herbers and director Alethea Jones break down Kristen’s catharsis and how it morphed into something entirely different when she and David kissed for the first time immediately after the confession.
