The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.

“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

Since Beyonce released her amazing self-titled fifth album last December, in a sneak attack move that patently redefined how major albums are distributed and required silence from more people than the JFK assassination, there has been a groundswell of support from the artist, whose last album, 2011's "4" wasn't exactly the smash it should have been. Robyn Davidson's nine-month, 1,700 mile trek across the blazing hot deserts of Australia gets the big screen treatment in John Curran's Tracks, a film that sidelines big chest-beating emotions in favour of a low-key adventure tale.

In earlier incarnations director Sydney Pollack and Julia Roberts swirled around Davidson's best-selling memoir, but you can almost hear the Academy Awards cogs turning with headline Hollywood talent involved.

The Painted Veil's Curran, working from a script by Marion Nelson, instead pares back the story to its bare essentials, following Mia Wasikowska's determined Robyn throughout her journey while judiciously dropping in flashbacks to childhood trauma. The Kids Are Alright’s Mia Wasikowska stars in the upcoming adventure biopic Tracks as Robyn Davidson, a young woman who sets out on a 2,000-mile journey on foot from Australia’s Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean in 1977. The latest trailer for the film gives viewers a look at who and what Robyn encounters along the way, including a young National Geographic photographer named Rick Smolan (Girls’ Adam Driver), who winds up documenting her adventure.

After getting a look at the new international poster for John Curran’s Tracks earlier this week, eOne has launched the new UK trailer ahead of its release on our shores in the spring.

The film made its debut out in Venice at the tail-end of last summer, with Mia Wasikowska (Lawless, Alice in Wonderland) starring in the lead, garnering some early buzz for her performance.

Following its bow on the festival circuit last year, with stop-offs at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, John Curran’s Tracks will soon be heading into cinemas on our shores this spring.

Based on a true story, the drama stars Mia Wasikowska in the lead, and after receiving some excellent reviews on the circuit – you can read our review here – early buzz has this as a potential contender for the Oscars this time next year.

Its arrival in Australia is less than two months away, and now a new international poster has surfaced online, with Wasikowska journeying across the desert.

The fun of watching a week's worth of new movies that almost no one has seen is the unknown -- you're not sure which ones will be great, which ones will move you to tears, or which ones will make you get up and walk out of the theater.

In other words, going into this year's Toronto International Film Festival, I expected the same thing I always do at events like these: to see a few good movies, one-to-two outstanding ones, a couple of hidden gems, and a whole lotta' duds. After returning from Canada last Wednesday, I am happy to admit that I was wrong.

In April 1977 a young Australian named Robyn Davidson set out to walk from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, a 2000-mile trek through some of the hardest, hottest terrain in the world. I have yet to read Davidson's subsequent National Geographic article about the experience, nor the bestselling book it later inspired. But if John Curran's feature adaptation is anything to go by, her journey was lengthy, sweaty and relentlessly solipsistic.

More previews are arriving as premieres come closer and closer, and now another has landed, this time giving us a first peek at the Australian film "Tracks" from filmmaker John Curran ("Stone," "The Painted Veil"). And it brings to life a pretty interesting true story. Mia Wasikowska stars as Robyn Davidson, a young woman who trekked across the Australian Outback in 1977, a 1,700-mile journey, accompanied by her dog and four camels. "Girls" star Adam Driver plays photographer Rick Smolan, who meets her on three occasions to document her journey for National Geographic magazine. And in this pretty lovely clip, you'll see Robyn writing a letter to the magazine looking for their support. Here's the official synopsis:  In 1977, a twenty-seven-year-old Australian woman named Robyn Davidson set out from Alice Springs to walk across 2,700 kilometers of harsh desert to the Indian Ocean.

Robyn Rosenberger thinks that children who are sick or struggling to recover from an injury need a little reminder of the hero they have inside them - so she's stitched thousands of capes for kids to wear. "If getting a cape can make a child feel like they are a tiny superhero," she says, "I'll keep sending them for the rest of my life." Rosenberger, 28, of Seattle launched Tiny Superheroes in January 2013, and along with her volunteers has sent over a thousand capes to ailing children across the world, including survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and the Oklahoma tornadoes.
