Drama League Award nominations: 47 performers compete for Distinguished Performance
Image
The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.

“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

Blake Lively Has a Galentine's Day With Mom and Sister -- See Her Heart-Shaped Hair!
Robyn Carlsson
Before celebrating Valentine's Day with husband Ryan Reynolds on Tuesday, Blake Lively celebrated Galentine's Day in New York City with sister Robyn and mom Elaine.

It was all hearts and balloons when the gals showed up to an event on Monday night. Blake looked super festive in a SemSem blue mini-dress with red and white hearts all over it, and paired the style with a red sequin Chanel bag and black studded heels.

To top it all off, the 29-year-old actress had her hair done up in the shape of a heart.

Maya Rudolph at an event for Shrek the Third (2007)
Who needs "Cups" when you have butter tubs?

On the season finale of Maya & Marty, Emma Stone and Maya Rudolph could make beautiful music together with the help of butter tubs – yes, butter tubs.

The pair joined vocal forces and sang an a cappella cover of Robyn's hit song Call Your Girlfriend. Not only did their voices sync up perfectly, but the two funny ladies used empty dairy containers to keep the beat. Do we smell two new cast members for the next Pitch Perfect?

The cover was inspired by a black-and-white video of the Swedish band Erato performing the song with empty containers.

The Voice Season 10 Premiere Recap: Who Runs the World? Curls!

Nope, somehow NBC’s reality singing juggernaut combined all my least-favorite Blind Audition elements — formerly famous person taking a second swing at success; backstory tugging at the heartstrings; the entire coaching panel devolving into noisy hype; the contestant herself using the word “journey” — and made me fall for it...

Why The Good Wife Needs to End This Season (Listen Up, CBS)
Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife (2009)
Chances are, you won’t hear a Kenny Rogers classic playing in the background of The Good Wife anytime soon (eclectic as the show’s soundtrack can sometimes be). And yet as CBS ponders the fate of its acclaimed Sunday-night drama in the wake of creators Robert and Michelle King announcing they’ll step down as showrunners at the end of Season 7, here’s hoping they’ll heed the immortal words of “The Gambler” and prove they “know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em… know when to walk away, and know when to run.”

Sure, the show...

Blake Lively Steps Out with Older Sister (and "Teen Witch" Star) Robyn!
Good genes run in the Lively family! Blake Lively was snapped on the streets of New York City over the weekend, spending some quality time with her half sister, Robyn Lively. The "Gossip Girl" alum, who's in the Big Apple shooting the upcoming Woody Allen film, looked picture-perfect in a Peuterey fur jacket, which she paired with dark denim, lace-up booties and tousled waves. Her 43-year-old sis looked cute and casual in jeans, tans boots and a two-toned gray sweater. Don't these two look like they just stepped out of a hair commercial?! With that fiery red hair, Robyn actually doesn't look too much different than she did in her "Teen Witch" days back in 1989. The actress, who played Louise Miller in the '80s cult classic, recently opened up about her most memorable role ... and her sex scene with Dan Gauthier. "That was an added scene because they wanted...

New Girls on the Block’s Macy and Sharon on Life After One Partner Changes Gender
Zosia Mamet, Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Allison Williams in Girls (2012)
The six stars of Discovery Life’s freshman docu-series New Girls on the Block are the anti–Real Housewives. Each of the Kansas City, Missouri–based transgender women has undergone transformative surgery, but as a means of making changes that reflect the gender they identify with, not to stave off old age. They clash over matters of family, friendship, love, and loss, but soberly, and up against the constant judgment of a culture that still largely views them as outsiders. So why, then, would AiYana, Jaimie, Chloe, Kassidy, Macy, or Robyn open up their lives to the wider scrutiny of a reality audience? As Macy (formerly Ken) and her wife Sharon tell it, it’s because they’re the most authentic women they know, and New Girls reflects that.“They basically just show us living our lives, and people can grab on to that and relate to it and respond to it,...

Yaya DaCosta in Whitney (2015)
Since Lifetime’s announcement of its forthcoming Whitney Houston biopic, fans have wondered how the cable channel will depict the singer’s dramatic life and those around her.

The movie, directed by celebrated actress Angela Bassett, portrays Houston as a woman who was naïve about romantic love and who was perhaps never able to properly express herself due to her strict upbringing. Although the film does not go so far as...

How Did Robyn Get to Be So Influential?
Robyn Carlsson
Last night, at Pier 97 on the Hudson River, I saw Robyn play a set that I can only describe as a triumphantly unhurried victory lap. Though she shared the bill with Norwegian electro duo Röyksopp — with whom she just released a solid Ep, Do It Again — it was very clear who the audience was actually there to see. Moments before she came out, someone deep into the crowd raised one of those clawlike appendages that are supposed to help you take better selfies and waved around an iPhone set to a scrolling text program that screamed in an inelegant typeface, “Robin!!!!!!!!!”Robyn’s path to this sort of American adoration has been pretty interesting. She had her first Stateside hits in 1997 — “Do You Know What It Takes” and “Show Me Love,” both off her bubblegum-soul debut Robyn Is Here — right on the cusp of the teen-pop boom that would...

The Three Stages of Bill Murray's Brilliantly Bittersweet Career
Bill Murray became a movie star 35 years ago this week, upon the release of "Meatballs" on June 29, 1979. His lead role as the head counselor at a sub-par summer camp marked a number of firsts: his first of four movies with director Ivan Reitman (the others were "Stripes" and the two "Ghostbusters"), his first of six movies with writer Harold Ramis (the four Reitman films, plus "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day"), and his first taste of mega-stardom beyond his TV fame on "Saturday Night Live."

Since then, his career has taken on a trajectory unique in the history of film, one in which he's gone from comic goofball to dramatic thespian, from universally beloved to acquired taste, and from manic cynic to soft-spoken spiritual seeker. Through it all, however, there have been a few constants; no matter whether he's a grubby groundskeeper or a morose mogul: Murray's character is always the coolest...

Andrew Garfield Is Hunted by Sinister Pro-Beyonce Forces in 'The Beygency' (Video)
Since Beyonce released her amazing self-titled fifth album last December, in a sneak attack move that patently redefined how major albums are distributed and required silence from more people than the JFK assassination, there has been a groundswell of support from the artist, whose last album, 2011's "4" wasn't exactly the smash it should have been. In a pre-recorded sketch on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend (they are no longer "Digital Shorts"), the show's host Andrew Garfield found out what it was like to be the one man in the entire world to dispute Bey's reign.

The sketch (via Huffington Post), entitled "The Beygency," is pretty weird and funny, and made even weirder and funnier by the fact that it's largely inspired by the Matt Damon / Emily Blunt sci-fi romance "The Adjustment Bureau," a movie that I liked quite a bit but didn't exactly set the world on fire. Garfield plays...

Tracks review: Mia Wasikowska leads gently affecting Outback epic
Robyn Carlsson
Director: John Curran; Screenwriter: Marion Nelson; Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver, Emma Booth, Rolley Mintuma; Running time: 110 mins; Certificate: 12A

Robyn Davidson's nine-month, 1,700 mile trek across the blazing hot deserts of Australia gets the big screen treatment in John Curran's Tracks, a film that sidelines big chest-beating emotions in favour of a low-key adventure tale.

In earlier incarnations director Sydney Pollack and Julia Roberts swirled around Davidson's best-selling memoir, but you can almost hear the Academy Awards cogs turning with headline Hollywood talent involved.

The Painted Veil's Curran, working from a script by Marion Nelson, instead pares back the story to its bare essentials, following Mia Wasikowska's determined Robyn throughout her journey while judiciously dropping in flashbacks to childhood trauma. It's this distressing moment that's underlined as the reason why Robyn chooses to reject people and head off into the sun-scorched wilderness with only four camels...

Here Are the Best Parts of Harrison Ford's Reddit Ama
Harrison Ford is usually thought of as delightfully grumpy based on his TV appearances, but his Reddit Ama over the weekend was full of fun and funny nuggets. (Ford was promoting a Showtime series about climate change that aired over the weekend.) Here are a few of the highlights! And as an extra treat, check out Ford playing "Uncharted 3" in Japan a few years ago. You're welcome in advance.

1. Harrison Ford doesn't have ophidiophobia, thank you very much.

Ford's famously fedora'd alter ego Indiana Jones is notoriously scared of snakes. Ford himself? Not so much. "I actually like snakes! When I was young, I was a boy scout nature camp counselor, and one of our projects was collecting snakes and creating an environment for them, so I'm quite familiar with snakes and think they'r[e] fantastic creatures."

2. Han Solo is pretty handy around the house.

Ford was sort of working as...

The latest trailer for the film gives viewers a look at who and what Robyn encounters along the way, including a young National Geographic photographer named Rick Smolan (Girls’ Adam Driver), who winds up documenting her adventure.

New Trailer for John Curran’s Tracks with Mia Wasikowska & Adam Driver
After getting a look at the new international poster for John Curran’s Tracks earlier this week, eOne has launched the new UK trailer ahead of its release on our shores in the spring.

The film made its debut out in Venice at the tail-end of last summer, with Mia Wasikowska (Lawless, Alice in Wonderland) starring in the lead, garnering some early buzz for her performance.

Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) spends two hardscrabble years in the Alice Springs area learning how to train and care for camels (feral herds of which number in the thousands in Western Australia) in order to prepare for her journey. Finally ready to embark with her animals, she realizes she is woefully underfunded and, despite her desires for self-sufficiency, accepts a fee from National Geographic in exchange for a written piece. The magazine adds a condition: she must allow photographer Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) to photograph...

New International Poster for Tracks with Mia Wasikowska & Adam Driver
Following its bow on the festival circuit last year, with stop-offs at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, John Curran’s Tracks will soon be heading into cinemas on our shores this spring.

Based on a true story, the drama stars Mia Wasikowska in the lead, and after receiving some excellent reviews on the circuit – you can read our review here – early buzz has this as a potential contender for the Oscars this time next year.

Its arrival in Australia is less than two months away, and now a new international poster has surfaced online, with Wasikowska journeying across the desert.

BuzzFeed: "A Girls Lover And Hater Debate The Season 3 Premiere"
The always buzzed about HBO comedy returned tonight and BuzzFeed’s Entertainment Editorial Director Jace Lacob, who’s looked forward to watching every episode of the series, and Deputy Entertainment Editor Jaimie Etkin, who’s begrudgingly watched every episode of the series, discussed the back-to-back episodes. They agreed on one thing. Maybe two. At BuzzFeed, you can read my latest feature, "A Girls Lover And Hater Debate The Season 3 Premiere," in which Jaimie Etkin and I hotly debate the two-episode third season premiere of HBO's Girls. Spoiler Alert if you have not yet seen the Season 3 premiere of Girls! Jaimie: I am simultaneously excited and nervous about this. My Girls rage is about to become public knowledge. I mean, I don’t have negative feels about Lena Dunham as a human or woman, but her show just makes me really frustrated. However, I must say it was eye-opening to see how people talk to her,...

Zosia Mamet, Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Allison Williams in Girls (2012)
Rihanna Wouldn't Let 'Girls' Use Her Song for Icona Pop's 'I Love It' Scene (Report)
Zosia Mamet, Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Allison Williams in Girls (2012)
HBO's Girls has provided a number of memorable music moments over the past two seasons, including Hannah and Marnie dancing to Robyn and a cocaine-fueled Hannah and Elijah dancing to Icona Pop's "I Love It." But the latter scene, which helped "I Love It" become a hit last year, almost featured a different song. Story: 'Girls' Cast, Producers Talk Getting Their Act Together Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" was music supervisor Manish Raval's previous choice, but the singer's team wouldn't let the HBO show use her song. "They didn't give a reason, we didn’t ask for a reason,"

Paul Rudd Suits Up for 'Ant-Man' Movie
Michael Douglas, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Paul Rudd, Corey Stoll, Mark Knapton, and Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man (2015)
Paul Rudd will shrink down a few sizes when he suits up for Ant-Man, a new Marvel superhero movie set to hit theaters in July 2015.

Rudd will portray Ant-Man and his alter-ego Henry Pym, a scientist who discovers a formula that allows him to shrink down to the size of an ant, the BBC reports. For those curious about what such a pint-sized hero can achieve, know this: in his first-ever comic appearance, Ant-Man took down several Soviet agents trying to steal his shrinking serum – and triumphed with the help of,...

10 coolest TV soundtracks of 2013: Do you agree with our picks?
Quite often, TV soundtracks are only mentioned when they're particularly bad. A clunking tune or wobbly composition can turn a beautiful, tense or dramatic TV moment and stink out the whole scene.

But what about the great soundtracks? The ones that make a good moment great. The tunes that give TV shows swagger. Digital Spy has picked out the 10 TV show soundtracks from 2013 that have rocked, helped us get our groove on or made us cry.

1. Peaky Blinders

The Brummie gangster drama, which ended this week, was beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and deliciously dark. The cherry on the top of the flat caps was the soundtrack. Tom Waits, the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and a hefty topping of the brilliant Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

2. Broadchurch

The TV phenomenon of 2013's soundtrack matched its content. Eerie, brimming with drama and totally captivating, the music of Ólafur Arnalds was almost as...

Blake Lively and Cate Blanchett Wow During Milan Fashion Week
Checking out the hottest styles from one of the fashion capitals of the world, Cate Blanchett and Blake Lively attended the Beauty in Wonderland presentation for Milan Fashion Week on Thursday (September 19).

Jumping at the chance to wear something outside-the-ordinary, the "Elizabeth" star donned a white and red dress with a feathery skirt while the "Gossip Girl" actress wore a shiny black jumper as they posed for photos outside.

Recently, Blake's sister Robyn Lively shared a fun detail on her younger sibling and Ryan Reynolds' September 9, 2012 wedding.

Best known for her starring role in the '80s flick "Teen Witch," Robyn revealed on the Pop My Culture podcast, "My younger sister and younger brother [Eric Lively] are huge Teen Witch fans. So for my younger sister's wedding, my younger brother and I got together and figured out how to do that last scene, the 'Finest Hour' dance."...

Tiff: Ranking the 21 Films We Saw at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival
The fun of watching a week's worth of new movies that almost no one has seen is the unknown -- you're not sure which ones will be great, which ones will move you to tears, or which ones will make you get up and walk out of the theater.

In other words, going into this year's Toronto International Film Festival, I expected the same thing I always do at events like these: to see a few good movies, one-to-two outstanding ones, a couple of hidden gems, and a whole lotta' duds. After returning from Canada last Wednesday, I am happy to admit that I was wrong.

Of the 20 films I saw at Tiff this year, two of them were bad, one was downright weird, two more were so-so, and the other 15 (15!) were spectacular. This is a phenomenal track record for a film festival, even one as distinguished as Toronto's.

As...

Tracks – Venice 2013: first look review
Tracks trudges into competition at Venice on the basis of some spellbinding scenery, but there's a frustrating coyness to the investigation of what's driving its heroine

In April 1977 a young Australian named Robyn Davidson set out to walk from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, a 2000-mile trek through some of the hardest, hottest terrain in the world. I have yet to read Davidson's subsequent National Geographic article about the experience, nor the bestselling book it later inspired. But if John Curran's feature adaptation is anything to go by, her journey was lengthy, sweaty and relentlessly solipsistic.

Tracks trudges into competition at the Venice film festival on the basis of some spellbinding scenery, a gritty if faintly one-note performance from the talented Mia Wasikowska, and not a whole lot else. Plucky Robyn longs to find herself and to be alone. She wants to kick the dust of Alice Springs...

Watch: Clip From Venice & Tiff Selection 'Tracks' Starring Mia Wasikowska
Can you tell we're on the cusp of festival season? More previews are arriving as premieres come closer and closer, and now another has landed, this time giving us a first peek at the Australian film "Tracks" from filmmaker John Curran ("Stone," "The Painted Veil"). And it brings to life a pretty interesting true story. Mia Wasikowska stars as Robyn Davidson, a young woman who trekked across the Australian Outback in 1977, a 1,700-mile journey, accompanied by her dog and four camels. "Girls" star Adam Driver plays photographer Rick Smolan, who meets her on three occasions to document her journey for National Geographic magazine. And in this pretty lovely clip, you'll see Robyn writing a letter to the magazine looking for their support. Here's the official synopsis:  In 1977, a twenty-seven-year-old Australian woman named Robyn Davidson set out from Alice Springs to walk across 2,700 kilometers of harsh desert to the Indian Ocean.

Robyn Rosenberger Makes Superhero Dreams Come True for Sick Children
Robyn Carlsson
Robyn Rosenberger thinks that children who are sick or struggling to recover from an injury need a little reminder of the hero they have inside them - so she's stitched thousands of capes for kids to wear. "If getting a cape can make a child feel like they are a tiny superhero," she says, "I'll keep sending them for the rest of my life." Rosenberger, 28, of Seattle launched Tiny Superheroes in January 2013, and along with her volunteers has sent over a thousand capes to ailing children across the world, including survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and the Oklahoma tornadoes.
