It’s official, y’all: Stephen Graham’s hit Hulu series A Thousand Blows has been renewed for a second season, and according to the announcement, we can expect a season 2 debut sooner than we expect.
The gritty crime series is a gem of a period piece that sucked audiences right into its narrative of ambition, violence, organized crime, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders fame, A Thousand Blows is a bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800s London that is completely flawless and purely entertaining. While it may have started as a miniseries, it was renewed before the first season even aired, and season 2 was shot back-to-back with season 1.

It certainly feels like Disney+ Emea (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) scripted originals are in a good place. That’s according to the man in charge, Lee Mason, executive director of scripted originals, Emea Disney+, who sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an interview on how his team’s successes are shaping the streamer’s strategy.
“I’m feeling positive,” Mason, previously the commissioning editor for drama at Channel 4, says. “[Especially] off the back of Rivals and A Thousand Blows.”
These two shows — vastly different in terms of genre — have a lot in common, the executive argues. “My feeling has always been about not moving too far away from what Disney+ is,” Mason explains. “That’s characters you care about, worlds that intrigue you and stories that move you. That’s got to be the starting point.”

Steven Knight may not be a name everyone recognizes, but odds are you are familiar with his resume. Having written films ranging from Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, Pawn Sacrifice, Spencer, and Maria, the writer is best known for his run of small-screen projects, including Peaky Blinders, Taboo, Rogue Heroes, Great Expectations, and The Veil. His penchant for British period dramas has resulted in some great shows, and his latest project is the Hulu series A Thousand Blows, starring Stephen Graham and Malachi Kirby.
A Thousand Blows follows Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), two best friends from Jamaica who travel to London to seek a new and better life. Creator Steven Knight has something new to share in the form of A Thousand Blows. A dramatic expose of Victorian London circa 1880, featuring BAFTA-nominated actor Stephen Graham, alongside Malachi Kirby and Erin Doherty. This time the action is not based in Birmingham with the likes of Tommy Shelby but looks further south to London and Henry ‘Sugar’ Goodson. Bare-knuckle boxer, East London legend, and a man on the cusp of cultural change. Out on Hulu and already confirmed for Season 2, A Thousand Blows looks set to cement Steven Knight’s reputation as an international dramatist.
With sets that bring a real slice of Victorian London to life, Steven Knight runs with the idea Boiling Point’s Stephen Graham brought to him. Combining other elements, including Mary Carr and the 40 Elephants, which had been on the writer’s back burner for some time, he evokes this world with his words. When...

There’s a moment halfway through Season 1 of Steven Knight’s East End caper “A Thousand Blows” where criminal mastermind Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) takes rising boxer Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) for a posh night out; she does this ostensibly to introduce him to a promoter (Ziggy Heath) who can get Hez into more society-friendly exhibitions — colorful belts and boxing gloves are just now replacing bare-knuckle brawls at the start of this Hulu series — in exchange for his help in pulling off a heist. Also to flirt a bit.
What convinces the Jamaican transplant, though, is seeing a performer (Jessica Reeve) do a trapeze act and cast the whole room under her spell. Dressed all in silver like a cross between a heron and a Greek goddess, she has power over everyone else at that moment, and her skin color isn’t something the English are looking down on but looking up at.

If you were ever wondering what a blank check earned off the success of a show as popular as "Peaky Blinders" can buy you, the answer is a new streaming series as thrilling and well-crafted as "A Thousand Blows." Creator Steven Knight, the prodigious screenwriter behind movies such as "Locke," "Spencer," and the recent biopic "Maria," could've gone in any number of directions after crafting the Cillian Murphy-starring story about a gang of criminals making their way up from the slums of Birmingham to the very seat of power in early 1900s England. The fact that he chose to stay in roughly the same lane, this time set in 1880s London and following a gang of female thieves crossing paths with a pair of aspiring boxers from Jamaica, is precisely what makes this next effort so intriguing to watch. Write what you know, the old adage goes, and Knight...

Hulu snuck up on us last week and, without warning, dropped a gem of a gritty period drama that sucked us right into its story of ambition, violence, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders notoriety, A Thousand Blows is a gritty, bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800’s London. But that’s not all. The boxing is just a distraction—albeit a delicious one—from what’s really going on here: a group of outsiders (lower class) first demanding more than society is willing to give them, then downright taking it when they're denied. This is one irresistible, binge-worthy series you should absolutely watch.
Inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s, A Thousand Blows casts a spotlight on a very different gang than those Knight introduced us to in Peaky Blinders.

Hulu’s new drama series, A Thousand Blows, has captivated audiences with its portrayal of two Jamaican friends navigating the perilous world of Victorian London’s bare-knuckle boxing scene. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the renewal of A Thousand Blows for a second season.

When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

A Thousand Blows is a 2025 drama series streaming on Hulu and Hotstar globally that was essentially born out of the concept of creating a show based on boxing in the UK during the latter half of the 1800s. It is this very premise that the plot follows here, as a Jamaican man named Hezekiah Moscow emigrates to London in search of a better life and finds a new career in the emerging sport of boxing. But fairly early into his time in the fast and busy city, Hezekiah gets introduced to the Forty Elephants, a women-only group of tricksters, scamsters, and petty thieves. With a solid plot at its center, and thoroughly entertaining production, A Thousand Blows season 1 makes for a fun watch, while also leaving us with a short tease of season 2, which is already in the works.

I personally do not mind directors taking creative liberties if they make the conflicts more engrossing and the narrative more captivating. A Thousand Blows, the six-part series, is answered by real-life people who lived in London’s east end around the 1800s. That said, a chunk of the events shown in Steven Knight’s historical sports drama are entirely fictional just like his previous drama Rogue Heroes, which too was based on a true-ish story. And maybe the main reason behind such an approach is that there is negligible information available about these characters. With that said, the creators have used whatever information they could get and then weaved fictional narrative around it for entertainment purposes. So, let’s take a look at the factual accuracy and inconsistencies in A Thousand Blows TV show and how the creators have twisted a few timelines to dramatize the events.

In the new series from creator Steven Knight, A Thousand Blows, viewers are taken from the Birmingham-set Peaky Blinders to the East End of London in the 1880s to examine the world of bare-knuckle boxing. The grittiness and drama are still there, as is the division between the upper and lower class, but with that being said, A Thousand Blows has something Peaky never did: Disney money. It's that extra infusion of cash that Knight says allowed him to create something even bigger, which he's hoping will translate to the small screen.
Speaking with Radio Times, Knight discussed the differences between dealing with a BBC-sized budget, and the one provided to him by Disney for A Thousand Blows. His new series stars Stephen Graham, Malachi Kirby, and Mary Carr, and is set to premiere on Feb. 21 on Disney+ overseas, and on Hulu here in the United States. "It's a nice feeling,...

Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.
Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.
So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

A Thousand Blows, Steven Knight’s companion piece to his masterwork Peaky Blinders, is a walk on the wild side. Yes, this series would make Nelson Algren proud — full of gritty realism, drifters, grifters, and outcasts looking to bruise, rip, and bleed their knuckles apart to get their piece of the pie.
A Thousand Blows is a gripping piece of work that focuses on those who fight to survive upon arriving on London’s mean streets, all while navigating life in the underbelly of society. All of this is brought to life by three standout performances: a brooding Stephen Graham, a magnetic Malachi Kirby, and an Emmy-worthy Erin Doherty.

Victorian London emerges through fog-laden streets and gaslit alleyways, a landscape reflecting the city’s transformative period. Narrow back lanes and hidden enclaves reveal a narrative of Jamaican immigrants whose arrival sparks cultural tensions against an undercurrent of urban struggle. The series explores these newcomers navigating a world defined by stark divisions, where survival often intersects with the complex dynamics of city life.
Steven Knight crafts this story with careful precision, drawing from his experience in historical storytelling. His approach situates the series within crime narrative traditions, offering a nuanced perspective on an era when London’s hidden spaces harbored both risk and potential. The narrative weaves through multiple character experiences, connecting personal aspirations with encounters in the city’s shadowed margins.

Beneath the surface of A Thousand Blows, times are changing. All those people coming into London from the British colonies are seeking change. The East End that Sugar knows is disappearing, while civilized men...

Steven Knight certainly knows his way around a captivating historical drama. Hot on the heels of Sas: Rogue Heroes and almost three years since Peaky Blinders ended on the small screen, the Brummie writer is back with another excellent British series, once again based on fascinating real-life characters and settings. But while the big draw is undoubtedly Boiling Point and This Is England icon Stephen Graham’s transformation into a bulky bare-knuckle boxer, Knight also lays the foundations for an engaging larger ensemble.
Elements that are synonymous with Knight’s previous shows are here in abundance. There are plenty of gripping developments amongst the numerous schemes and deadly rivalries, along with a Peaky Blinders-esque family pub. Strong social and political commentary is also woven throughout, with a marked divide between the East End’s struggling working class and the aristocracy of the West End.

Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows often calls to mind HBO’s Warrior. They both take place in an inner-city slum at the end of the 19th century, though here its Victorian London rather than San Francisco. And both follow a newly arrived immigrant, in this case Jamaican boxer Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), as he contends with discrimination, inequality, and criminality in his new home, often resulting in hand-to-hand combat. But while they may share a similar style, a combination of lackluster fight scenes and thin characterization ensures that A Thousand Blows never quite makes it into Warrior’s weight class.
Upon arriving in London, Hezekiah quickly finds himself drawn into the world of underground boxing, a sinister realm presided over by brothers Treacle Goodson (James Nelson Joyce) and Sugar (Stephen Graham). Before he knows it, he’s embroiled in a bitter blood feud with Sugar and recruited by criminal queenpin...

At a meeting with his agents way back in January 2022, Malachi Kirby recalls for the first time describing his dream project when pondering the direction his career may take next.
Kirby, whose star was soaring following a BAFTA-winning performance in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe, said he wanted to fulfil a life-long dream of playing a boxer, wanted to tell the story of someone who had existed, wanted to find a project set in the past and fancied his next gig being based in London.
“I never thought that would end up all being the same job,” says Kirby three years on as we chat in the weeks leading up to premier of Disney+’s A Thousand Blows.
In what was an incredible bout of serendipity, Kirby’s agents soon after received the scripts for A Thousand Blows. Steven Knight’s latest drama series spotlights Hezekiah Moscow, who was indeed...

The A Thousand Blows trailer has officially been released. The Hulu show will star the Forty Elephants, a group of women who turn to shoplifting to survive and thrive in England from the 1800s through the 1950s. While they will be featured heavily, the show will also reveal Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), who are two Jamaican immigrants who are introduced to boxer Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham). The show is led by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
The trailer showcases the first look at a crime drama, but there are some elements that the show fails to reveal in earnest. Check it out below:
Rather than focusing on the criminal underground, the trailer showcases the reality of life as a boxer in a heavy period piece. It does not reveal the Forty Elephants, though it does feature women hinting at the presence of a dangerous criminal underground.

Having made some of the most unmissable TV of the last decade with the likes of Birmingham mob drama Peaky Blinders and high concept Apple TV sci-fi series See, Steven Knight is gearing up to deliver another knockout (in many ways quite literally) with new Disney+ joint A Thousand Blows. Set amidst the dangerous world of illegal boxing in 1880s Victorian London, writer-creator Knight's new show — which has shot its first two six-episode series back-to-back, with the first due to land in 2025 — boasts a powerhouse cast, with Malachi Kirby (Small Axe), Stephen Graham, and Erin Doherty (The Crown) leading a real heavyweight ensemble.
Per the show's official synopsis, A Thousand Blows centres around BAFTA award-winner Kirby's Hezekiah Moscow, who finds himself plunged into "the vibrant and violent melting pot of post-industrial revolution London's East End from Jamaica." The rest of the plot description reads as follows: "Drawn into...
