David Berkowitz’s Motive Explored: Where Is The Son of Sam Now?
Image
The Son of Sam Tapes takes us back to the mid-1970s, when New York City was going through a phase of transition. There was a fire epidemic that was taking place in the city, with arson cases increasing with every passing day, and unfortunately it had become the center of every kind of unlawful activity. There were budget cuts made by the authorities, a lot of police officers and firemen had been discharged, and there was an increase in the number of people breaking the law. It was a strange period when a sense of anarchy pervaded society, and even the world of cinema reflected that aspect, as we saw a surge in characters that were labelled as anti-heroes, harboring anti-establishment sentiments, being written by the filmmakers. This was the same period when Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver was released, and it had a very strong link with the Son of Sam murders.

Looking Back on the Fact and Fiction Behind ‘Faces of Death’
Image
The further you look back on history, the more you realize that the separation of fact and fiction is a relatively recent phenomenon. For the longest time, there wasn’t much of a difference between storytellers and historians (just look at how many people still think the Trojan War was a real event), and while this skewed perception of reality can have devastating consequences in the modern interconnected world, I think there’s some wisdom to be found in extracting a dose of truth from obvious hoaxes.

When it comes to media, one of the most enduring examples of this is Found Footage cinema, a whole genre that relies on our willingness to accept that what we see on-screen is real even if we don’t actually believe in ghosts, demons and witches. This decidedly modern form of filmmaking may have been popularized in the digital age, but the seeds...

Was ‘Faces of Death’ Real? It’s Complicated
Image
Where do you go when you've exhausted your horror collection? When you feel like you've seen everything, and another viewing of Saw just won't do? The answer, of course, is mondo horror favorite Faces of Death. Both the 1978 original and a slew of follow-up films under the same infamous name have captured the morbid fascination of generations — more for their shock value than outright quality. Featuring a pathologist named Francis B. Gröss (Michael Carr) as he takes the audience through his collection of deadly footage, the real draw of Faces of Death, as many an edgy suburban kid knows, is that the series is real. That's right: through decades of changing morality, the wicked rumors of Faces of Death's veracity have persisted. But just how real is real? Is it all fake blood, or have we just witnessed a murder on tape? As it turns out, the truth lies...

Barbie Ferreira Gives an Update on “Gruesome” 'Faces of Death' Remake
Image
At the end of the 1970s - following the success of horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Carrie - a new type of production came from the spooky scary genre. Titled Faces of Death, the movie was a morbidly curious look into the moments leading up to, during, and following death. Considered to be one of the most iconic mondo projects of all time, audiences follow along with pathologist Francis B. Gröss (Michael Carr) in the John Alan Schwartz-helmed film as he shows shocking imagery of all things death related including suicide, murders, cannibalistic kills, animal deaths, and more. As one could imagine, the movie received a solid amount of pushback from the censorship powers that be, which only made it all the more interesting to its ever-growing cult fandom. Now, more than four decades later, director Daniel Goldhaber (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) is resurrecting...

Kurt Russell vs Ray Liotta: ‘Unlawful Entry’ Remains an Overlooked ’90s Thriller
Image
In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.

But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. Which is why...

Divisive Horror Movie Remake Casts Stranger Things & Euphoria Stars
Image
The Faces of Death remake has now cast stars from both Netflix's Stranger Things and HBO's Euphoria. The original 1978 Faces of Death, from writer-director John Alan Schwartz, was an anthology-style film hosted by Michael Carr as pathologist Francis B. Gröss that purported to show real-life footage of shocking deaths. The amount to which the footage was real has been questioned throughout the years, with many but not all scenes later having been revealed to be fake, a controversy that also plagued its three sequels. Despite its divisiveness, the film was a hit, earning $35 million off its $450,000 budget.

Per Collider, the upcoming Faces of Death remake has cast Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira. Both are best known for their recent teen roles, with Montgomery playing Max's bullying older brother Billy on Stranger Things and Ferreira playing body positivity advocate Kat Hernandez on Euphoria. They are the first stars to be announced for the film,...

American Horror Movies That Are Banned In Other Countries
Image
Horror has always been one of the most controversial film genres. From the silent frights of "Nosferatu" to Wes Craven's 1970s shockers, horror films are the harbingers of moral panic and audience debate. Though American horror films have spurred plenty of moral outrage on our shores, it's not common for films to be banned outright in the United States. However, that doesn't mean that American horror films receive the same reception in other counties.

Countries have specific rules regarding censorship and movie ratings, leading some to ban certain American horror films for violating federal guidelines. Horror movies tend to be the most censored genre because of their depiction of violence (as well as sex and nudity), making some horror films unsuitable for viewing due to their explicit depictions of depravity. Censorship like this comes from ethical debates about whether or not pop culture influences the masses: Can violent movies make people more violent?...

Faces of Death Reboot Is Happening at Legendary with a 21st Century Twist
Image
As predicted long ago, Faces of Death is getting rebooted for the 21st century at Legendary Entertainment. The studio has reportedly just picked up the rights to the faux documentary that was originally released in 1978 and became a cult hit at the time, spawning multiple sequels in the following years. Because many video rental stores refused to carry the movie, it was frequently passed around on bootleg VHS throughout the 1980s and 90s.

For Legendary's reboot, Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the team behind 2018's Cam, will respectively write and direct the new movie. Susan Montford and Don Murphy of Angry Films are producing, and Cory Kaplan will co-produce with Rick Benattar of BT Productions executive producing. John Burrud, who produced the original Faces of Death movies, is also on board to work on the reboot.

Per THR, the plot of the new movie "revolves around a female moderator of a YouTube-like website,...

‘Sons of Sam': 5 Most Shocking Details From the True Crime Docuseries
Joshua Zeman
“Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness” is streaming now on Netflix

Netflix dropped its four-part limited series “Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness” on Wednesday, and it’s chock-full of new and disturbing details in the Son of Sam serial killer case.

Produced by reporter Joshua Zeman, “Sons of Sam” centers on investigative journalist Maury Terry and his decades-long search for what he believed to be the truth behind the murders of six people in New York City during the summer of 1977. Namely, Terry believed that convicted murderer David Berkowitz didn’t act alone in the slayings and was part of a satanic cult that ordered him to kill his victims.

Each episode of “Sons of Sam” tracks Terry’s journey through more than two decades of research into the Son of Sam case — an investigation that took him from New York to South Dakota and eventually (as...

Who Are "The Children" in The Sons of Sam? Here's What You Need to Know About the Cult
Image
Based on the works of journalist Maury Terry, Netflix's The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness looks beyond David Berkowitz for the shooting murders that unfolded from 1976 to 1977 in New York City. Per the title, Terry's theory was that there wasn't just one Son of Sam, but multiple. Ultimately, Terry believed that the so-called Sons of Sam could be traced back to a cult called The Children, which was connected to the likes of Scientology and Charles Manson's Family. But how did that connection come about? Here's what you need to know.

While looking into Berkowitz, Terry connected him to John and Michael Carr, brothers who were literally sons to a man named Sam. The journalist strongly believed that these brothers were involved in the Sons of Sam killings and looked further into their past connections. He found that the siblings had been linked to the Church of Scientology in their past.

Maury Terry Plays a Huge Part in Netflix's The Sons of Sam, but What Happened to Him After the Case?
Image
From the get-go, it's clear that the focus of Netflix's true-crime docuseries The Sons of Sam is investigative journalist Maury Terry, but just exactly who was Terry? We'd have to first talk about David Berkowitz, the infamous Son of Sam. From 1976 to 1977, a terror was unleashed in New York City when someone who dubbed themselves the Son of Sam started shooting in random places with a .44 caliber gun. The police eventually caught Berkowitz, who immediately confessed to killing six people and injuring seven others that year. However, Terry would make a career out of trying to prove that Berkowitz did not, in fact, act alone and that he was part of a widespread satanic cult linked to Scientology and Charles Manson.

When the Berkowitz case cropped up in 1976, Terry was in his early 30s working as an in-house editor at Ibm in Yorktown. He previously worked as a cub...

The Sons of Sam: Here's What Happened to David Berkowitz After He Was Caught
Image
Netflix's latest true-crime project takes another look at one of New York City's deadliest murder sprees. The docuseries The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness re-examines the David Berkowitz case that terrorized New York City in the '70s. While Berkowitz was held responsible for the Son of Sam shootings, investigative journalist Maury Terry believed that there was more to this case. So what happened to David Berkowitz after he was caught? Berkowitz did, in fact, talk with Terry on two occasions after he was convicted. Today, he is still serving six consecutive life sentences in prison, where he has taken to the Christian faith.

What Were the Son of Sam Killings?

From 1976 to 1977, terror took over New York City when a mysterious killer started shooting in random places with a .44-caliber revolver. The shooter killed six people and wounded seven others before the NYPD could close in on the case.

Before Watching Netflix's The Sons of Sam, Here's What to Know About David Berkowitz
Image
Netflix's new docuseries The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness takes on the infamous case of David Berkowitz, the 24-year-old postal worker from Yonkers, NY, who was convicted for killing six people between 1976 and 1977. The true-crime series focuses primarily on the records and investigations of journalist Maury Terry as he pushed against the single-shooter narrative that the police and media presented. While the NYPD stuck to the story that Berkowitz committed his crimes alone, Terry believed that Berkowitz had other accomplices and was part of a more widespread satanic cult. In interviews, Berkowitz even confirmed some of Terry's theories.

But just who was David Berkowitz, and what were his crimes? Before you delve into The Sons of Sam, here's what you need to know about Berkowitz and his infamous "Son of Sam" case.

Berkowitz's Early Life

‘Sons of Sam’ Director Joshua Zeman Believes Serial Killer David Berkowitz Didn’t Act Alone
Maury Terry
“There’s obviously enough doubt to suggest that it’s worth looking into,” Zeman says

Netflix’s “Sons of Sam: a Descent Into Darkness” docuseries begins streaming May 5, and it tells the story of true crime reporter Maury Terry’s crusade to prove to the world that convicted serial killer David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz didn’t act alone in killing six people in the summer of 1977.

“Sons of Sam” director Joshua Zeman told TheWrap he believes there’s evidence that Berkowitz wasn’t the only killer responsible for the New York City slayings in the summer of 1977.

“There’s a preponderance of evidence to suggest that Berkowitz didn’t act alone,” Zeman said, adding that he knows the names of some potential suspects but is keeping them anonymous.

“I have been told the names of those individuals, some of whom are still alive. So, you know, that remains to be seen…...
