Ice Cube's Friday Trilogy Gets New Streaming Home as Fourth Film Finally Gets Confirmed
Image
Ice Cube's iconic Friday trilogy finds a new streaming home ahead of the hotly-anticipated fourth film in the franchise. All three movies are currently on Max.

The entire Friday trilogy is available for streaming on HBO's Max streaming service.Friday, Next Friday, and Friday After Next were all added to the Max streaming library on April 1, just a day before it was announced that a fourth Friday had officially entered development.

Co-written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, directed by F. Gary Gray, and produced by New Line Productions alongside Cube Vision, 1995's Friday starred Ice Cube as Craig Jones, a Los Angeles slacker whose life in South Central largely consists of peddling small amounts of weed with his friend Smokey, portrayed by Chris Tucker, and avoiding mooches and bullies like Anglea Means' Felicia and Tiny Lister Jr.'s Deebo.

The film also featured appearances from Hollywood icons such as Regina King,...

Alicia Silverstone and Netflix just made next Christmas a lot better
Image
Netflix is getting really good at making Hallmark-type films. But the streamer does it a bit differently. We know the Hallmark Channel drill: Boy moves to town, girl is trying to get out of a bad relationship, they meet and girl doesn't like boy, and then they end up falling in love and being happy forever. Netflix Originals normally add a lot more intrigue.

We also get actors we know well in most Netflix movies. This will be the case next year (we hope) when Alicia Silverstone is set to join Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Pierson Fode, and Melissa Joan Hart in a film called A Merry Little Ex-Mas. The script was written by Holly Hester who also penned The Royal Treatment.

The plot involves a recently separated couple trying to have one more Christmas as a family with their children before the mother starts her life over. The issue...

Gambit & 10 Other Canceled Marvel Projects Lost to the Void
Image
Deadpool & Wolverine has lit the world on fire, raking in nearly $1.3 billion at the box office. Along the way to his massive theatrical success, the Merc With a Mouths road trip through the Void took a few pit stops to spotlight characters fans had thought were gone for good. These ranged from favorites like Hugh Jackmans Wolverine to forgotten deep cuts like Jennifer Garners Elektra. It even took things a step further, introducing Channing Tatum as Gambit. Tatum had been cast as the character for a potential spin-off years earlier, but the film would never see release.

Tatums performance, including the instantly iconic utterance of his intent to make a name for himself here, has garnered interest in a potential follow-up role for the character. Gambits newfound fandom showed that audiences still clamor to see their favorites brought to the big screen. But Tatum wasnt the only actor to...

Ice Cube says ‘Friday’ franchise has advocates with new Warner Bros. regime
Image
Actor, producer, platinum-selling recording artist and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award-winner Ice Cube has been pushing to get a fourth chapter in his beloved comedy franchise “Friday” off the ground for years. In a recent conversation with hip-hop legend and timepiece advocate Flavor Flav on the “Flavor of the Week” SiriusXM show, he shared hopes that audiences may get a chance to revisit the storyline.

“We finally got some traction with Warner Bros,” Cube said. “They have new leadership, my man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first ‘Friday’ and ‘Players Club’ and ‘All About the Benjamins’. Mike DeLuca was there. So, now he’s running Warner Bros. And him and my man [agent] Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the f–k is going on with ‘Friday’? Man, let’s get this sh– back online.”

The first “Friday,” co-written...

'Paul Blart - Mall Cop' Is the Best Thanksgiving Movie
Image
Due to its unfortunate place set snugly between the powerhouses that are Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving sometimes gets lost in the holiday movie shuffle. Though is doesn’t have nearly as many popular hits when it comes to movies as its festive counterparts do, there are still plenty of quality Thanksgiving films to watch during the holiday —the best of which involves Kevin James, a group of parkour-loving thieves, and a mall that needs saving. Yes, that’s right: the best Thanksgiving movie is Steve Carr's Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Harley Quinn's Green Lantern Spoof Perfectly Calls Out the Worst Comic Trope
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Knight Terrors: Harley Quinn #2 ahead!

In Knight Terrors: Harley Quinn #2, Harley pokes fun at the Golden Age of comics while also shedding light on harmful tropes, particularly the "Women in Refrigerators" trope. When Harley discovers that her love interest Pamela has been turned into a salad and stuffed into a refrigerator, she calls out the pointlessness of these cliché and harmful narrative devices. This issue highlights the absurdity of these tropes and reminds readers of the progress made in the comic industry — while acknowledging that there is still work to be done in representing female characters.

Never one to take things too seriously, Harley Quinn's recent adventure becomes a perfect opportunity to poke fun at the Golden Age of comics. But irreverent doesn't mean heartless, and when things take a turn for the worse, Harley is quick to call out the pointlessness of some of comic's most...

Why Ice Cube Wanted First-Time Directors Working On The Friday Franchise
Image
Most fans of the original comedy classic "Friday" and its subsequent sequels might assume that star Ice Cube actually stepped behind the camera to direct one, if not all, of the entries in his beloved neighborhood stoner trilogy. But in fact, he didn't direct a single installment in the franchise. Ice Cube did try his hand at directing in the late '90s with "Players Club," a story about a single mother who turns to the underworld of exotic dance to make ends meet.

Aside from an ESPN episode of "30 for 30" about the Oakland Raiders' move to Los Angles in 1982, "Players Club" is the only directing credit for Cube, who prefers to share the limelight with other directors. This is especially true with the "Friday" series where the rap mogul liked hiring first-time directors. Telling SPLICEDwire in an interview conducted right when "Friday After Next" was being released,...

Short Circuit Reboot Is Happening with a Twist on the '80s Classic
Image
The 1986 movie Short Circuit is getting rebooted at Spyglass Media Group, imagining a new take on the classic sci-fi comedy. Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman have been hired by the company to "put a Latinx twist" on the screenplay for the family movie, although additional story details haven't yet been revealed. It seems likely that the Short Circuit reboot will follow a similar story as the original, but with original characters.

Directed by John Badham and written by S. S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, the original Short Circuit stars Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, Tim Blaney, and G. W. Bailey. It focuses on an experimental military robot named Number 5 who gains human-like intelligence after it's struck by lightning. Debuting in the No. 1 spot at the box office when it was released in 1986, the film is one of the most memorable sci-fi movies of its decade and is...

Freaky Friday Star Heidi Blickenstaff Explains Biggest Stage-to-Screen Changes (Plus, Grade the Movie)
If you just watched the premiere of Disney Channel’s Freaky Friday and thought star Heidi Blickenstaff looked right at home in the role of straight-laced Katherine Blake, it’s because she is.

Prior to being cast opposite Cozi Zuehlsdorff in the TV movie, Blickenstaff originated the role of Katherine in the stage production of Freaky Friday, which opened in Washington, D.C. in Oct. 2016. She and co-star Emma Hunton (soon to appear on Freeform’s Fosters spinoff Good Trouble) then brought the show to San Diego, Cleveland and Houston from Jan. to July 2017.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday (2003)
‘Freaky Friday’ Musical Gets Premiere Date On Disney Channel
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday (2003)
August 10 will be Freaky Friday for Disney Channel. The cable net has set that midsummer date for the premiere of its musical version of the classic mother-daughter body-swap.

Directed by Steve Carr, the latest take on Mary Rodgers’ classic book stars Heidi Blickenstaff, who played the mom role in the stage version, and Cozi Zuehlsdorff of the Dolphin Tale films as the bickering mother and daughter who both wish they could switch places with the other for a day. But be careful what you wish for: they magically wake up one freaky Friday in each other’s body and begin a journey of self-discovery and empathy neither one could have imagined.

Disney also made Freaky Friday theatrical features in 1976 starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, and in 2003 with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Its 1995 telefilm version starred Gaby Hoffmann and Shelley Long.

Bridget Carpenter wrote the Freaky Friday screenplay based on her stage adaptation,...

Great Job, Internet!: It’s Die Hard with a Segway when Paul Blart gets recut as an action movie
As far as comedy films go, Paul Blart: Mall Cop is already pretty dramatic. It’s about criminals taking over a mall and the one mustachioed, Segway-riding security guard who can stop them, but it’s still somehow even less funny than that makes it sound. Perhaps the problem, then, isn’t that Paul Blart wasn’t funny enough to be a good comedy, but that it shouldn’t have been a comedy in the first place. It already has the makings of a standard Die Hard plot, so maybe director Steve Carr should’ve just leaned into that and made a serious action flick that just happens to star Kevin James instead.

Thankfully, CineFix’s Trailer Mix video series is here to show us what that would’ve been like, and the results are surprisingly good. Well, more like comparatively good, as it’s not really much of a...

Enjoyable New Trailer For Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life
I absolutely hated middle school a.k.a. junior high. Those two years were seriously some of the worst of my life. I'm seriously surprised that I survived that insanity. There's now a movie coming out that pays tribute to the awfulness of those years. It's called Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life and today we have an entertaining new trailer for you to watch. The movie looks pretty good, and this is the synopsis for it:

Rafe has an epic imagination...and a slight problem with authority. Both collide when he transfers to an oppressive, rule-crazy middle school. Drowning in do's and don'ts, Rafe and his scheming best friend Leo hatch a plan to break every rule in the school's Code of Conduct. It's Ferris Bueller meets Home Alone as their battle with Principal Dwight explodes into chaos both real and imagined. But Dwight displays his own fiendish creativity,...

Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life Trailer Sells Young You Dreams
Based on the book by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life is the next in the line of films featuring kids taking control of their world.

Rafe (Griffin Gluck) is heading into middle school, and he finds himself in the world of Principal Dwight (Andy Daly), who runs a tight ship, and has an overabundance of rules. Rafe and his friends put together a plan to break every rule Principal Dwight has, but he has to keep his plans, and rule-breaking, from his mom (Lauren Graham).

While this one looks like a lot of fun for younger audiences, its success probably rests on Daly’s shoulders, and he’s a great choice for the role. The “bad guy” in such a film can easily go too cartoony, and though Daly could probably aim for that if he wanted to, his work on things...

Second Trailer for Comedy 'Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life'
"Creativity has no place in this school." The full cast includes Lauren Graham, Rob Riggle, Thomas Barbusca, Andy Daly, Adam Pally, and Efren Ramirez. This actually looks really fun, especially disregarding the rules and messing with expectations. I'm sure if I were younger I'd enjoy it even more, but still, it looks pretty good. Here’s some news that is bound to delight the five people out there who were clamoring for a sequel to the 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop. A follow-up to the comedy that featured dozens of fat jokes, uncomfortable racial stereotypes and moments of Kevin James falling down is now set to begin production this April.

James will reprise his role as the bumbling, segway-riding security officer and will also co-write the script with Nick Bakay, the same writer/actor with whom James penned the original. James will also produce the sequel alongside Adam Sandler and Todd Garner.

Meanwhile, Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr is not returning for the sequel, so the reins are being handed over to director Andy Fickman, who previously helmed several family comedies with a high quotient of slapstick, such as Parental Guidance, She’s the Man and The Game Plan.

It has...

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 Moving Forward With New Director

THR reports Sony is in talks with Andy Flickman to helm the Paul Blart: Mall Cop sequel, leaving the first film's director, Steve Carr, out in the cold. Kevin James will reprise his role as the titular mall security officer, and he's once again written the script with Nick Bakay. No details are available regarding what kind of misadventures and mayhem this mediocre mall cop will get up to this time. Kevin James in Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)
Kevin James Will Return in Paul Blart: Mall Cop Sequel
Kevin James in Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)
Nearly five years after the 2009 surprise hit comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop debuted in theaters, star Kevin James has signed on to reprise his title role for the sequel Paul Blart 2, with Andy Fickman in talks to direct for Sony Pictures.

Kevin James is also co-writing the screenplay, alongside his Paul Blart: Mall Cop writing partner Nick Bakay. No story details were given for the follow-up. The original comedy followed a New Jersey father who takes his job as a suburban mall cop way too seriously. He must spring into action when a group of thieves take over his shopping center.

Todd Garner is producing along with Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison production company. Production is scheduled to begin in April.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop, which was directed by Steve Carr, earned $183 million worldwide, from just a $26 million production budget. Andy Fickman most recently directed Parental Guidance starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler.

Kevin James Hates You, So 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' Sequel is Happening
Because torturing audiences with films like Here Comes the Boom, Zookeeper, The Dilemma and two Grown Ups films wasn't enough, Kevin James is bringing back his painfully stupid Paul Blart: Mall Cop for a completely unnecessary sequel at Sony Pictures. It's unclear just what will happen this time, but the comedy is said to take the bumbling security guard on another adventure. James will co-write the sequel again with the first film's co-writer Nick Bakay. However, Steve Carr couldn't be coaxed into this disaster, so the studio hired the "talents" of Andy Fickman, the man behind Parental Guidance and She's the Man. THR reports Adam Sandler is producing with Todd Garner by way of his Happy Madison banner again. It seems appropriate that despite turning towards more substantial pieces of filmmaking like The Cobbler with Thomas McCarthy, Sandler is still helping to churn out pure garbage. James is also producing...

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Sequel on the Way; Andy Fickman in Talks to Direct
At long last, the highly anticipated sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop is on the way. THR reports that Andy Fickman (Parental Guidance, She’s the Man) is in discussions to direct a follow-up to the 2009 Kevin James comedy, stepping in for previous helmer Steve Carr. James is set to reprise his role as the titular security guard who has a habit of falling down (hilarious!). James will also co-write the screenplay with Nick Bakay, as the two penned the first film. Plot details for the Sony picture are unknown at this time, but an April start date is being planned. The first Paul Blart film was a sizeable hit at the box office, taking in $146 million domestically against a reported budget of $26 million. Of course that was five years ago, so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s still an audience for a sequel.

Peter Farrelly, who usually directs alongside his brother Bobby, is flying solo with Movie 43, which finds him helming two of the short segments that make up this anthology comedy starring most, if not every, big name actor in Hollywood.
