Despite the trades reporting that Chris Evans will make his MCU return in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor remains resolute that his time as Captain America is over. 

However, we know better than to put too much stock into what actors like this say ahead of a movie as secretive as this one. Plus, even if Evans says he's done playing Cap, that doesn't mean he won't return as Variant in Doomsday or Secret Wars.

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Evans, who played Captain America across eight MCU films, was asked if he still stays in contact with his former Marvel collaborators, considering his exclusion from the highly anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday.” Evans confirmed that they all keep in touch, but added it feels different having exited the franchise in “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Yeah, I talk to them all the time,” Evans said. “It’s where Pedro [Pascal] is right now. I mean, it’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out, and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”

Though the series ended only five years ago, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a show from a different television era. The Marvel live-action series ran on ABC for 136 episodes across seven seasons, had five seasons with 20-plus episodes, and ended on its own terms. Nowadays, achieving any of those feats on TV is rare. Not to mention, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also the last show from the previous Marvel Television division that was independent of Marvel Studios.

That's not all that strange, especially since the actor is gearing up to put the cape back on in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe approaches the end of its Multiverse Saga, the questions surrounding every character's fate has once again come into question. Heck, some characters' fates within the saga have come into question.
