Ice Cube’s Son Reveals How the Snake in Anaconda Terrified the Actors
Image
Anaconda is famously one of those horror adventure movies that is so bad that it is good in its own way. One brilliant part of the movie is that you can genuinely tell that the actors are terrified of the anaconda in the movie. Although the movie is almost three decades old, thanks to one of the actors’ children who revealed new info on Twitter (X), we now know why the cast of Anaconda was, in fact, terrified of the animatronic snake on set. Hearing the name Anaconda (1997), you’ll probably think back to a time of terrible horror movies that were so bad they were good. The name evokes the same feeling as Sharknado, Devil Fish, Alienator and Vampire’s Kiss, which are films you know are awful but have cemented their place in movie history. Anaconda was directed by Luis Llosa and written by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and...

Westworld and Silo Stars Join Jack Black and Paul Rudd's Anaconda Reboot

Two of Hollywood's most beloved fan-favorites have joined the cast of Anaconda.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Westworld star Thandiwe Newton has signed on for the upcoming Anaconda reboot film from director Tom Gormican. Silo star Steve Zahn has also joined the project, as have Ione Skye and Selton Mello, the latter of whom will be making his English-language feature film debut in Anaconda.

'Anaconda': Jack Black, Paul Rudd Announce '90s Remake Release Date in New Promo
Image
Paul Rudd and Jack Black are teaming up for a new version of the campy 1997 cult classic Anaconda for Sony Pictures, and to announce the release date, the pair made a hilarious video together (below). In the short clip, Black promises, "There's gonna be a big f**kin' snake, and it's gonna rip." Two comic legends and this description should be more than enough to put butts in seats come Christmas Day 2025, when the movie will hit theaters.

Little else is known about the project, which was first announced back in August 2024. Given the casting of Rudd and Black, it's clear the studio, Sony Pictures, wants to take the Anaconda franchise into more intentionally comedic territory. It has also been suggested the film will be a meta take on the B-movie giant animal subgenre and the original specifically, with a plot involving two old friends who get dragged into the jungle to make a movie,...

Top Gun: Maverick, Jack Reacher, Tropic Thunder are Streaming Hits on Paramount+
Image
Tom Cruise has positioned himself as one of the greatest action stars of the last two decades thanks to franchise roles like playing Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible. As if we didnt already know that Cruise has the ability to draw a crowd, U.S. Paramount+ subscribers have been making it abundantly clear, as four of the stars movies are currently dominating the streamers Top 10 even though most of them have been on the platform for more than a year.

Top of the pile is 2022s highest grossing movie, Top Gun: Maverick, which is currently holding third position on the chart. The sequel to Cruises 1986 blockbuster suffered numerous delays during the Covid pandemic, and all the signs suggested that when it arrived the reaction would be quite muted in the same way as many other pandemic movies. Instead, Cruises return to the skies took off at Mach 10 and just kept going.

How John Woo Finally Resurrected ‘The Killer’
Image
A remake of John Woo’s groundbreaking action movie “The Killer” has been in the works since shortly after it premiered in 1989, but it took until 2024 for it to finally materialize — from Woo himself.

Over the years a number of filmmakers took a stab at adapting the beloved Hong Kong action movie, about a hitman (played by frequent Woo collaborator Chow Yun-Fat) who accidentally blinds a young girl, including “Alien” principals Walter Hill and David Giler, “Top Gun” writers Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., and Korean-American filmmaker John H. Lee. There would be announcements made every so often, but very little forward momentum.

While development creeped along, Woo made his way to Hollywood, directing a series of highly regarded, star-filled action movies like “Hard Target,” “Broken Arrow” and “Mission: Impossible II,” which grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide back in 2000. The style he developed in Hong Kong...

Glen Powell Offers Hugely Exciting Top Gun 3 Update as Studio Feels the Need for Speed
Image
Hollywoods newest movie star, Glen Powell, has offered a surprisingly promising update on the development of Top Gun 3. While it was thought that the follow-up to 2022s hugely successful legacy sequel would take some time before landing on the silver screen, Powell has now revealed during a conversation with the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he already has something in his diary...

I mean, I have a date, he said, before replying, absolutely not when asked if he was willing to reveal anything else.

This from Powell is in stark contrast to what producer Jerry Bruckheimer said earlier this year. Asked by Deadline about a possible third movie in the Top Gun franchise, Bruckheimer dampened expectations by saying, It will be a while. Instead, it sounds like things are moving much quicker than expected. Could this be in part because of Powells newfound popularity? Only time will tell, but...

“This is like, eh”: Tom Cruise Approached One Director to Helm Top Gun 2 Who Declined His Request Only to Publicly Call ‘Maverick’ Mediocre After Release
Image
Top Gun: Maverick came more than three decades after the release of the first film starring Tom Cruise in the lead, and yet, it was as much of a resounding success as the original film from 1986. However, unlike a lot of stuff and people that were brought back from the first movie in this 2022 one, legendary filmmaker Tony Scott wasn’t one because of his devastating demise in 2012.

Top Gun: Maverick. | Credit: Paramount Pictures.

Since the younger Scott wasn’t there, Cruise reportedly decided to approach the older and equally legendary Scott brother, Ridley Scott, to helm the second movie in his Aviation film series. However, he was surprisingly not only met with a declined request by the iconic director, with the movie going to Joseph Kosinski instead, but was even met with his film being considered mediocre by Ridley!

Tom Cruise Reportedly Approached Ridley Scott for Top Gun:...

Anaconda Trailer Reveals Sneak Peek at Brutal Chinese Remake

Anaconda has been remade in China, and an official trailer has been released for the horror film.

Per Bloody Disgusting, the Chinese Anaconda remake comes from co-directors Xiang Qui Liang and Xiang He Sheng. Like the original film from 1997, the new Anaconda tells the story of a group of humans falling prey to the world's largest snake. Anaconda remake trailer: Chinese film pits circus performers against a giant snake

Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Tom Gormican is on board to write (and possibly direct) the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and we’ve heard that this new take on the concept of Anaconda might be taking a meta approach, with “actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie and all hell breaks loose.” There was a rumor that Pedro Pascal and Paul Rudd had been offered roles in the film… But while we wait to see how that project is going to pan out, Sony Pictures...

Dick Tracy: Why Doesn’t Disney Give This Classic the Love It Deserves?
Image
For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

Anaconda reboot taking a meta approach?
Anaconda (1997)
Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget”. Now industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic video podcast has dropped the rumor that this new take on the concept of Anaconda might be taking a meta approach.

Anaconda (1997) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Anaconda episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Ryan Cultrera, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

I’ll be the first to admit my mistakes. When I made that Alligator 2 defense, and no, doing that video is not the mistake I’m referring to, I mentioned that the giant monster movie had become somewhat of a lost art, particularly in the ’90s. Then I ended up rewatching Anaconda (watch it Here) and realized I had totally forgotten about it. That’s because it got lost in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid. Both those movies seem to have longer lasting impacts. Deep Blue Sea has that great surprise kill and Lake Placid has, well, it has Betty White. There are others, too. The Relic is a gory fun time, Bats isn...

Anaconda reboot rumor: Paul Rudd and Pedro Pascal offered lead roles?
Image
Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget”. They’re obviously sticking with the idea of going big with this one, because reliable “inside scoop” provider Daniel Richtman has heard that the lead roles have been offered to Paul Rudd and Pedro Pascal!

We have to take this as a Rumor for right now, since there hasn’t been any sort of official confirmation regarding this news, but it does make sense. Paul Rudd stars in Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its upcoming sequel, so of course they’d want to keep working with him on their event-sized Anaconda movie. And a few months ago, we...

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ ‘Women Talking’ Win Writers Guild Awards
Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.

The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.

The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

‘Everything Everywhere’ Wins Original Screenplay, ‘Severance’ Dominates at WGA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.

The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.

Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

2023 WGA Awards: Full winners list in 23 categories
Image
Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Over on the small screen side of things, “Better Call Saul...

New Dick Tracy Movie Once Again Teased by Warren Beatty in Bizarre Fashion
Image
Warren Beatty’s 1990 Dick Tracy movie holds a special, nostalgic place in many a fan’s heart. Released the summer after Tim Burton’s Batman kicked off a new wave of Batmania, a level of pop cultural superhero obsession not seen since the original Batmania that followed the 1966 TV series, Dick Tracy was supposed to be the next big franchise giant, with its all-star cast, larger-than-life villains in grotesque, over-the-top makeup, and a production design meant to recall nothing less than the comic strips that first brought the world’s most famous (non-costumed) detective to life. Hell, it even answered Batman’s Prince soundtrack with one of its own by Madonna, not to mention original tunes by no less than Stephen Sondheim.

Anyway, despite a heady summer where at least some kids (whistles innocently) inexplicably found themselves buying action figures of weird looking gangsters in pinstripe suits (because what kid...

WGA Awards nominations: Who’s in, who’s out, who wasn’t eligible?
Image
Don’t look for four of the 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay (the original scripts for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness” plus the adaptations of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” ) on the list of 2023 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced January 25. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.

The Original Screenplay frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is in contention for this guild award as are two of its Oscar rivals: “The Fabelmans” and “Tar.” The WGA race is rounded out by the scripts for “The Menu” and “Nope.”

Likewise our predicted winner for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Women Talking” — is vying for this award too. It faces off against a pair of Oscar nominees — “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — plus “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “She Said....

2023 WGA Awards Film Nominations Give ‘Everything Everywhere’ and ‘The Fabelmans’ the Advantage
Image
The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) announced the outstanding screenplay nominees for their annual Writers Guild Awards just one day after the 2023 Oscars nominations came out. Given the organization’s strict eligibility rules, the WGA has created interesting differences between its choices and the Academy’s this year.

Looking at the five WGA Original Screenplay nominees, only three were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar: “The Fabelmans,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “TÁR.” The difference could easily be chalked up to the fact that Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” were not eligible, as they were not written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an international affiliate Guild.

In the adapted screenplay field, Glass Onion, Top Gun: Maverick and Women Talking will face off against Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She Said. Eddie Hamilton (‘Top Gun: Maverick’ editor) on the blockbuster’s cultural impact: ‘I think it’s the film that we needed’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“I think it’s the film that we needed,” declares editor Eddie Hamilton A.C.E. about the cultural impact that “Top Gun: Maverick” appears to have made worldwide. For our recent webchat he adds, “I’m thrilled for people who get to go back to the cinema and have a night out at the movies again after two years of craziness, you know, and remind people of the joy of that, and going on an adventure with characters that you love, and just getting lost in the world of a film. There’s nothing better than that when you sit down in the theater and the lights dim, and you just you just get lost in a world of adventure and excitement. It’s just so cool. I love it. It’s the best. There’s nothing quite like it.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Joseph Kosinski (‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director) on pushing the envelope to make a movie ‘worthy’ of the ‘Top Gun’ name [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“It’s one of those days I’ll never forget,” reveals director Joseph Kosinski about shooting one of the most pivotal and emotional scenes in “Top Gun: Maverick,” when two beloved characters reunite on-screen and share a poignant moment of reflection and reckoning with their past. For our recent webchat he adds, “you’re seeing two actors at the height of their powers, in terms of acting, in a scene together. That felt very genuine in the moment. You know, what you see on screen, I think it very much mirrors real life, and the amount of respect that they had for each other and the friendship that they built over the years, it was all there. That was definitely one of the most memorable days on set for me.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Top Gun’s Secret Genre Is What Makes It So Good
Image
On its surface, Top Gun has the veneer of a simple military action movie, but the 1986 classic's true genius lies in the totally different genre hiding under the hood. Top Gun centers upon Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Anthony Edwards' Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, two young aviators training at the US Navy's elite Fighter Weapons School in San Diego, better known as "Top Gun". Directed by action movie legend Tony Scott, Top Gun finds itself in such prestigious company as seminal submarine thriller Crimson Tide and buddy cop sequel Beverly Hills Cop II.

With a director as renowned for high-octane action movies as Tony Scott, Top Gun initially looks like typical action cinema. According to co-writer Jack Epps Jr., however, Top Gun is actually structured as a sports movie akin to Sylvester Stallone's Rocky or racing biopic Rush. What separates Top Gun from the countless 1980s military...

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Surpasses ‘Titanic’ as Paramount’s Top-Grossing Domestic Release Ever
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
“Top Gun: Maverick” has just sped past box office juggernaut “Titanic” to become Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office of all time.

Having earned over 601.9 million at the U.S. box office to date, Tom Cruise’s sequel inched past “Titanic,” which in 1997 ultimately grossed 600.7 million. And it brings “Maverick’s” global total to 1.19 billion, with room to grow yet.

However, it’s worth noting that “Titanic” has been re-released since 1997 and its actual domestic total sits at 659.3 million, still placing it at #7 on the all-time domestic charts. What’s more, James Cameron’s film has made a whopping 2.2 billion globally as the #3 biggest movie ever, and even “Top Gun” is never going to catch that lofty total, without even taking into account inflation from 25 years earlier.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies Past 600M At Domestic Box Office
Image
Paramount Pictures’s Top Gun: Maverick’s first-run release has surpassed Titanic‘s first-run release, 601.919M to 600.788M.

Top Gun: Maverick is the 12th movie in domestic box office history to cross that threshold and crosses that mark in 47 days. 2019’s Avengers: Endgame is the fastest grossing pic to 600M at ten days. Among pandemic fare, Spider-Man: No Way Home crossed the six-century mark in 17 days.

Titanic remains the highest grossing domestic movie in the studio’s 110-year history with its re-release grosses putting that James Cameron pic’s total cume at 659.3M.

This latest milestone comes on the heels of Paramount Pictures dominating the box office in the first half of 2022. The studio is currently #1 in domestic box office so far for the year, with nearly 1.04B in cumulative gross and over 24 of the market share—the studio’s best year since 2014.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ And ‘American Hustle’ Scribe Eric Warren Singer Signs With WME
Image
Exclusive: WME has signed Eric Warren Singer, one of the screenwriters behind Paramount’s summer smash Top Gun: Maverick.

The Tom Cruise sequel nearly 30 years in the making hit theaters on May 27 and has thus far grossed over 907 million worldwide, registering as the highest grossing film of 2022. Singer shares screenplay credit on the Navy aviator action-drama with Ehren Kruger and Christopher McQuarrie, having worked from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, which was based on characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.

Singer came to Top: Gun Maverick after collaborating with its director Joseph Kosinski on the critically acclaimed drama Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, which starred Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jeff Bridges. He co-wrote that film, based on Sean Flynn’s GQ article “No Exit”, with Ken Nolan.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Lawsuit: You Can’t Copyright Ideas, but Is There a Sequel Without That Article?
Image
On Monday, Paramount Pictures celebrated its 357 million global box-office performance for “Top Gun: Maverick” — and faced a federal copyright lawsuit from the heirs of the late Ehud Yonay, author of the 1983 magazine story that inspired the original “Top Gun.”

Nearly four decades ago, Paramount secured rights to “Top Guns,” an article published in the May 1983 issue of the now-folded California magazine; Yonay received a writing credit for the article on the original 1986 film, with a screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.

In 2018, Yonay’s heirs filed for what’s known as termination rights. So now they argue it is them — not Paramount — who currently owns the underlying rights to make any movies based on “Top Guns.” They claim Paramount didn’t ask for permission — or pay them to make “Maverick.”

The plaintiffs are Ehud’s window Shosh and his son Yuval. On June 6, they asked a Los Angeles...

Top Gun: How a Single Flight Changed the Course of the Movie
Image
Screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. took the assignment to write a movie called Top Gun in the mid-1980s for one reason: he wanted to fly in a fighter jet.

“I have my private pilot’s license that I got when I was an undergraduate at Michigan State, so as a private pilot, I said, ‘Well, that’d be fun,’” Epps tells Den of Geek during a recent Zoom chat. “At least I’ll get a jet ride out of it, if nothing else.’”

Epps and his writing partner, the late Jim Cash, got a lot more out of it than that out of Top Gun. The story of a rogue fighter pilot named Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who joins the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School at Miramar base in southern California and must learn the hard way how to fly and fight as part of a team, Top Gun became...

‘Top Gun’ Sequel Hit With New Lawsuit Disputing the Film’s Copyright
Image
The heirs of the author of a magazine article that served as the basis for Top Gun have sued Paramount Pictures, claiming the studio went ahead with the new sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, despite knowingly no longer owning the copyright.

As noted in the lawsuit (which was shared by Variety), the original 1986 Top Gun was based on Ehud Yonay’s 1983 story for California magazine, entitled “Top Guns.” Paramount secured the exclusive movie rights to the story after it was published, and Yonay received a “based on” credit as well.

In 2018, Yonay’s children,...

Paramount Hit With ‘Top Gun’ Copyright Lawsuit From Original Article Author’s Heirs
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Paramount Pictures has been drawn into a potentially massive legal battle over the rights to Top Gun. According to a lawsuit filed on Monday in California federal court, the studio knew it didn’t have the rights to the sequel but forged ahead with production and distribution anyway.

The complaint was filed by Shosh and Yuval Yonay, the heirs to the author of the 1983 California magazine story, Ehud Yonay, entitled “Top Guns” that the original movie was based on. They are taking advantage of a provision in copyright law that allows authors to reclaim the rights to their works after waiting a period of time, typically 35 years. The clause has quickly become a massive thorn in the side of studios that face the prospect of losing franchise rights to many iconic works from the 1980s.

The Yonays claim that the rights to the...

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Is Top Gun Based on a True Story?
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
As Top Gun: Maverick arrives in theaters this week, it will be almost 36 years exactly since the original Top Gun was released. That first movie became not only the biggest hit of 1986, but one of the signature films in the career of Tom Cruise and a permanent part of the cultural zeitgeist.

Inspired by an article called “Top Guns,” written by Ehud Yonay for the May 1983 issue of California magazine, the film detailed the lives of pilots at the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School (known as Topgun) in Miramar, California. Written for the screen by Jack Epps Jr. and the late Jim Cash, the Tony Scott-directed movie starred Cruise as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a skilled pilot and natural rogue who must learn how to become part of a team if he wants to fly the dangerous missions he’s training for.

What Dick Tracy 2 Would Have Been
Image
The character of Dick Tracy has been around since 1931, appearing daily in newspaper comic strips almost continuously since his debut, and achieving a level of popularity during his heyday that few other characters could aspire to. In just his first 20 years of existence, there were four Dick Tracy movie serials, four feature films, a TV series, and countless items of merchandise.

But many modern fans know the character best thanks to his portrayal by Warren Beatty in 1990’s big budget summer blockbuster movie. That film attempted to kick off a wave of Tracymania unseen since the 1940s. It never quite took hold.

Despite being one of the highest grossing movies of 1990, and garnering a slew of Oscar nominations, Dick Tracy was a victim of expectations. The film that had once been envisioned as a gritty ode to 1930s gangster movies became a giant blockbuster with a merchandising bonanza meant to...

Dick Tracy: The Long Journey of the 1990 Blockbuster
Image
When Dick Tracy burst onto screens in June 1990, it was heralded as the heir to the previous summer’s comics-to-page blockbuster throne, Batman. While the Disney film boasted similar star power (Warren Beatty and Al Pacino), intricate production design that evoked both colorful Sunday comic strips and classic gangster films, and even a tie-in album by one of the biggest pop music stars of a generation (Madonna’s I’m Breathless), characters like Dick Tracy and Flattop were hardly the pop culture mainstays that Batman and the Joker were, even before that 1989 film revitalized their fortunes. Nevertheless, Dick Tracy made a box office splash (albeit not a Batman-sized one), and racked up three Oscars as well as nominations for Best Supporting Actor (for Al Pacino’s scenery-chewing turn as Big Boy Caprice), Cinematography, Costume Design, and Sound Design.

But Dick Tracy had a difficult journey. Bouncing around between studios and...
