Lyle Lovett has been in the music business a long time, and he has plenty of hits to his name. However, based on a fan account of a recent concert of his, there seems to be legitimate reason to be concerned. So, what’s going on with the singer, and what did the concert-goer have to say?
Lyle Lovett Has Been In The Music Biz A Long Time
Lyle Lovett has had a long career that spans decades. He was signed to McA Records in 1986, and he released his debut album not long after that. Over the years, he put together an impressive career, and certainly not one for anyone to scoff at.
Lovett did not begin writing songs until he went to Texas A&m University in the late 1970s. So, that accounts for decades of writing music under his belt. In 2022, he released the studio album 12th of June,...

Monica Barbaro’s Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Joan Baez in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has introduced an entirely new generation of fans to the folk icon, even though Baez retired from the road following a 2019 farewell tour and rarely performs live these days. She made an exception Saturday night when she took the stage at a tribute concert held in her honor at San Francis’s Masonic, with all proceeds going to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

U.S. President Jimmy Carter died today, Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100, making him the longest-living President (and a man who even outlived one of his obituary writers). He passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, around 3:45pm Et, according to his son, James E. Carter (known as Chip). Plains was a formative part of Carter's life and career — the great documentary about Jimmy Carter (directed by Jonathan Demme of Silence of the Lambs and Stop Making Sense fame) was even called Man from Plains, which focused on Carter's book tour supporting Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, one of many pro-peace campaigns that the Nobel Peace Prize winner fought for throughout his life. You can watch that excellent 2007 documentary for free through the link below:

Bob Dylan is on a lot of people’s minds these days thanks to the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, which chronicles Dylan’s early rise in the folk music scene, up until he decided to “go electric” in 1965 (sadly it ends before we see him “go Christmas album” in 2009).
In light of all the recent Dylan chatter, retired talk show host/occasional jury candidate David Letterman took to YouTube to share his thoughts about the legendary musician. Specifically, Letterman talked about the time that Dylan tanked a performance on his show, possibly on purpose.
In 1992, just a year before he hopped over to CBS, Letterman celebrated 10 years of NBC’s Late Night program with a lavish anniversary special held at Radio City Musical Hall. In addition to various clips and an appearance from Bill Murray, the event featured “special musical guest” Bob Dylan and an “all-star band.”

When the Highwaymen recorded “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” written by visionary songwriter Guy Clark, who died in 2016, the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson landed on their most poignant song. While Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” may have been the foursome’s signature, Clark’s “Desperados,” released on their 1985 debut album, dovetailed with their own outlaw legacy: that of aging icons who indulged the young guns their bravado while still beating them on the draw. The last time Kris Kristofferson ever performed in public, he was paying tribute to a friend. Showing up for others is something Kristofferson, who died Saturday at the age of 88, did his entire career, whether it meant insisting that John Prine receive a record deal, or showing public support to Sinéad O’Connor when the world shunned her, or spending decades advocating on behalf of the United Farm Workers. On these two evenings, in April 2023, Kristofferson was in Los Angeles helping an all-star cast of musicians pay tribute to his old pal,...

Rosanne Cash remembered the late Kris Kristofferson as “a piece of my heart and family history” in a moving tribute shared on Instagram.
Cash, as she wrote, knew Kristofferson for much of her life. He, of course, worked closely with Rosanne’s father, Johnny, a relationship that came together after Kristofferson got Johnny’s attention by landing a helicopter in his yard. And the first time Rosanne sang on record was a rendition of the Kristofferson-penned tune “Broken Freedom Song,” recorded for Johnny’s 1974 album, The Junkie and the Juicehead Minus Me.

Update: YouTube and Sesac have come to terms on a new deal. “Content (that was previously blocked) will be restored across YouTube services over the next day or two,” YouTube said in a statement on Monday night.
Hundreds of classic music videos and songs by Nirvana, Adele, Bob Dylan, Kendrick Lamar, Green Day, and hundreds more are currently unavailable on YouTube amid a copyright dispute between the video platform and the performance rights organization, Sesac.
A YouTube spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, that the site and Sesac were “unable to reach an equitable agreement” before the expiration of their copyright deal.
“We take copyright very seriously and as a result, content represented by Sesac is no longer available on YouTube in the US,” the spokesperson said. “We are in active conversations with Sesac and are hoping to reach a new deal as soon as possible.”

Songs by Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Green Day and Mariah Carey, among others, are returning to YouTube after a contract dispute between the platform and Sesac, a performing rights organization, was resolved.
A YouTube spokesperson shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, “We’re pleased that Sesac reconsidered our offer. We’ve reached a deal and content will come back up shortly. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”
Earlier, some songs by several artists were met with this message when attempting to be played: “This video contains content from Sesac. It is not available in your country.”
Sesac in the U.S. collects royalties and helps protect copyrights on behalf of songwriters and publishers. On the organization’s website, it said, “Sesac currently licenses the public performance of more than 1.5 million songs on behalf of its 15,000+ affiliated songwriters, composers, and music publishers, which...

A statue of the late singer-songwriter Johnny Cash was unveiled at the U.S. Capitol. It took nearly five years to get the statue to Capitol Hill.
In 2019, the Arkansas legislature voted to replace the state’s two statues at the time, Uriah Rose and Sen. James Clarke, which stood for over 100 years.
The then-Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) pushed for the replacement. “It’s been over 100 years since the statutes were replaced for Arkansas, and our state has changed,” Hutchinson told NPR. “James Clarke was a segregationist. You had Uriah Rose, who was a Confederate sympathizer. They do not reflect what our state represents today.”

Johnny Cash has become the first musician to receive a statue at the US Capitol. The Kevin Kresse creation was introduced at the National Statuary Hall in Washington, DC with remarks from the Man in Black’s daughter, Rosanne Cash, during an unveiling ceremony on the morning of Tuesday, September 24th.
“Words cannot come close to expressing our pride to see my dad accorded such a singular privilege, the first musician in history to be included in the Statuary Hall Collection,” Rosanne said, joined by over 100 family members and close friends. “I’m very careful not to put words in his mouth since his passing, but on this day, I can safely say that he would feel that of all the many honors and accolades he received in his lifetime, this is the ultimate.”

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1982 album, Long After Dark, is receiving a deluxe reissue set for release on October 18th via Geffen/UMe.
The remastered collection features 12 bonus tracks, including seven previously unreleased songs. “There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album,” the late Petty is quoted as saying in a press release. “I left off… four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.”
Notable inclusions in the expanded collection are Petty’s version of “Never Be You” (which became a No. 1 country hit for Rosanne Cash), the pop-leaning “Don’t Make Me Walk the Line,” and an uptempo version of “Ways to Be Wicked.” The latter became a single for the country rock band Lone Justice.

This is a call from Donald Trump to Foo Fighters.
A spokesman for the ex-potus and current GOP presidential nominee hit back at the multiplatinum band today after Dave Grohl and company complained about their hit “My Hero” being played at a weekend rally without the band’s consent.

I am not a scientist. I am an artist. I cannot begin to spout scientific data on what we will become once artificial intelligence outsmarts us. I can read the predictions of how our workforce will be replaced by AI. I can read the warnings from Stephen Hawking that go back as far as 1996 that it will not be climate change that will be our undoing but more likely, AI.
But what I can say with certainty is that what we all share as humans all over the planet and what connects us is the human experience made up of emotions that nothing programmed can ever experience. While you’ve been waiting nearly two decades for a new T Bone Burnett album, he’s been “Waiting for You,” or so he sings on the lead single for his upcoming LP, The Other Side. “Waiting for you so long, I’ve been waiting for you,” he sings over acoustic guitar and sighing sounds that could be either steel guitar or vocalizations by the women of Lucius, who features on the song. There’s a reason the word honors is in the title. To help celebrate the lifetime contributions of artists in music, dance, theater, opera, movies and TV, the Kennedy Center Honors routinely pay tribute to its recipients by rewarding them with memorable performances.
Scores of artists have been feted since the Honors got their start in 1978, but there are certain tributes that remain sketched in our hearts forever. In anticipation of the 46th annual event honoring Billy Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick on Dec. 27, we look back at some of the show’s most unforgettable performances — starting with Lenny Bernstein’s opening speech from the very first Kennedy Center Honors, of course.

Willie Nelson & Family, a documentary series about the country music icon from filmmakers Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman, is set to bow on Paramount+ on Dec. 21.
The career retrospective is creatively driven by directors Zimny and Moverman, both recent Emmy winners — Zimny for directing the variety special Springsteen on Broadway and Moverman for the TV movie Bad Education, starring Hugh Jackman.
Paramount+ acquired the documentary series, which recalls Nelson’s life and long career as an iconic country music singer-songwriter, after its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Nelson participated in the production and allowed Zimny — a frequent Bruce Springsteen collaborator — and Moverman access to his archives.
The four-parter is executive produced by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and is a production of MTV Entertainment Studios, in association with 101 Studios, Blackbird Presents Films and Sight Unseen. “Willie’s music formed the soundtrack of my youth. The National and Phoebe Bridgers are cracking up to stave off falling apart in the new animated music video for their recent collaboration, “Laugh Track.”
The video was directed and animated by Bernard Derriman, who recently helmed The Bob’s Burgers Movie. In it, a couple sit down for a grave conversation but are soon overwhelmed by a rising tide of chuckling faces. Before the couple nearly drowns in bleak hilarity, however, they launch into the sky, escaping the deluge and eventually landing back at the table for a clear-eyed conversation.

The National have returned with Laugh Track, a surprise new album that serves as “the second half of a double album” which began this past April with the band’s previous release, First Two Pages of Frankenstein. The new record is out now, and features appearances by Phoebe Bridgers, Rosanne Cash, and Bon Iver. Stream it below.
The band announced the album onstage this past weekend at their own Homecoming Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio. Last month, they shared the singles “Space Invader” and “Alphabet City,” which both appear on the new album, along with “Weird Goodbyes,” the single with Bon Iver that the band shared in August 2022. Earlier this year, the band hinted that “Weird Goodbyes” wouldn’t appear on Frankenstein, alluding to a “future home” for it. Now, we know what that “future home” is.

The Herb Alpert Foundation has donated $250,000 to the Entertainment Community Fund to aid idled film and TV industry workers during the ongoing Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. A matching donation by an anonymous donor brings the total gift to $500,000.
“When artists are in need, it is important for society to offer support,” said Alpert, co-founder of A&m Records. “The reason is simple: Our society is poorer when artists aren’t able to share their work with us. My hope is that our matching grant to the Entertainment Community Fund will keep inspiring others to support our artists in need.”
Rona Sebastian, president of the Herb Alpert Foundation, added, “The Herb Alpert Foundation is thrilled to provide essential funding to support the talented writers, actors and dedicated industry professionals during this challenging work stoppage period. With artificial intelligence currently front and center across the creative community, YouTube has published a set of AI music principles and launched something it’s calling the YouTube Music AI Incubator with a group of artists, songwriters and producers from Universal Music Group.
The principles, which the giant Alphabet/Google-owned platform said “are rooted in its commitment to collaborate with the music industry alongside bold and responsible innovation in the space” are three. They were developed with Umg chairman-ceo, Sir Lucian Grainge, and shared today by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.
They include: a commitment to embrace AI responsibly in partnership with the music industry; protections “that help balance the interests of copyright holders with those of the creative community on YouTube”; and scaling up safeguards to AI-generated content to address challenges like trademark and copyright abuse, misinformation, spam.

YouTube thinks it can take an ethical, “artist-centric” approach to generative AI.
In partnership with Universal Music Group, it’s introducing a “Music AI Incubator,” which CEO Neal Mohan says will help it “gather insights” to “better understand how these technologies can be most valuable for artists and fans, how they can enhance creativity, and where we can seek to solve critical issues for the future.”
The incubator will bring in Umg and artists/producers on its roster, including Anitta, Björn Ulvaeus, d4vd, Don Was, Juanes, Louis Bell, Max Richter, Rodney Jerkins, Rosanne Cash, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Yo Gotti, and the estate of Frank Sinatra.
YouTube gave no specific details about what it’s working on with the incubator, but Mohan says it’s developing “specific technologies, monetization opportunities, and policies”–all related to AI.
Mohan also claims YouTube’s potential use of generative AI is guided by ethical principles.

Principle #1: AI is here, and we will embrace it responsibly together with our music partners. As generative AI unlocks ambitious new forms of creativity, YouTube and our partners across the music industry agree to build on our long collaborative history and responsibly embrace this rapidly advancing field. “Are there any more real cowboys?” Neil Young sang Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl on a rare evening when he was neither the headliner nor, at age 77, even close to the oldest artist on the bill.
Providing an instant answer, Willie Nelson, wearing a cowboy hat and red-white-and-blue guitar strap, slowly strolled on to the stage on his 90th birthday, bringing the crowd of more than 17,000 to its feet.
Nelson sat in a chair — one of the few onstage concessions he’s made to age — and joined Young for the rest of their 1985 duet, “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?”

Just call them the Rolling Stoners.
You know you are music royalty when Keith Richards shows up to pay his respects. And the Rolling Stones icon was on hand Sunday for the second and final night of Willie Nelson’s epic, 90th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
At 79, Richards was the youngster in this pairing of living legends, and the two harmonized sweetly on two songs: Waylon Jennings’ “We Had It All” and the late outlaw Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever,” particularly poignant with its refrain, “Just like the songs I leave behind me / I’m gonna live forever, now.”
The Richards surprise came shortly after 10:00 p.m. on this cool, overcast night in the hills above Hollywood, nearly three-and-a-half hours into the evening’s celebration.

When Willie Nelson turns 90 years old on April 29, he’ll naturally do so on the road (again). The country music legend is the guest of honor at two nights of tribute concerts — April 29 and 30 — at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. Dubbed “Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90,” the events are stacked with Willie collaborators, those he’s influenced, and members of his family and Family Band.

Refresh for updates… Stephen Stills has joined his former bandmate Graham Nash in paying tribute to David Crosby, who died Thursday at 81.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Stills said:
I read a quote in this morning’s paper attributed to compose Gustav Mahler that stopped me for a moment:
“Death has, on placid cat’s paws, entered the room.”
I shoulda known something was up.
David and I butted heads a lot over time, but they were mostly glancing blows, yet still left us numb skulls..
I was happy to be at peace with him.
He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius.
The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun.
I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure.”
