Focus Features has finally unleased the first real look at Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third and final film in the movie series based on the PBS period drama created by Julian Fellowes. The film hits theaters September 12.

With some of the same footage shown to exhibitors during Focus’ presentation at CinemaCon earlier this spring, the teaser lays out the plot: the Crawley family and its staff arrive at 1930, looking to the future while saying goodbye to the past.

That includes the family’s famed Grantham Estate. At one point, the head of the family Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) pays respect to the mansion that made the show famous — the real Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England — by giving it a pat and a kiss, apparently as the family says goodbye to it.

The teaser begins with three couples elegantly strolling down the green at a horse race. Could there be trouble in paradise for the Talbots? Matthew Goode has confirmed that he won’t be reprising his role of Mary’s husband Henry Talbot in the third and final Downton Abbey movie, hitting theaters on Sept. 12, after previously missing the second installment.

“I was unavailable for the second because I was doing The Offer,” Goode recently told The UK’s Radio Times. “[For the third], I was shooting [Netflix’s Department Q]. But I also buggered my knee, and I had to have an operation. That takes weeks to get over, so I was never going to be able to do it.

Paul Giamatti has spoken about returning to the Downton Abbey franchise for the upcoming third film, describing the production as shaped by the absence of Dame Maggie Smith, who died in September 2024.

In an interview with People, Giamatti said the cast continued working with her memory in mind. “It was not the same without her, but it felt very much like in her honor in some way,” he said. “She certainly still feels present through the whole thing. Not having her there is obviously a huge loss, but everybody was still acting in her spirit.”

Paul Giamatti recently opened up about the production of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale in the wake of Maggie Smith’s death, reflecting on how the film carries her spirit and serves to honor her.

Speaking to People ahead of his forthcoming Black Mirror episode this week, the two-time Oscar nominee opened up about reprising his role from the wildly popular mothership show, in which he appeared during the Season 4 Christmas special as Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) brother Harold Levinson.

“It was not the same without her, but it felt very much like in her honor in some way. She certainly still feels present through the whole thing. Not having her there is obviously a huge loss, but everybody was still acting in her spirit,” The Holdovers star said.

Focus Features today offered CinemaCon attendees an emotional look at the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. This is the last in the trilogy of big screen continuations of the British TV drama phenomenon. It’s written by series creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis.

Plot details had previously been sparse, but the trailer shown today includes a title card that tells us “It’s time to say goodbye” before we see Hugh Bonneville’s Earl of Grantham patting the facade of the manor house on the Grantham Estate in what indeed appears to be a farewell.

Taking to the official Downton Abbey Instagram, it was revealed that the previously untitled third film will be titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

If there was any doubt that the film’s title was hinting at the film being a closing chapter for the franchise, it’s tagline most certainly confirms the film will be the final chapter in the franchise with the poster teasing, “The time has come to say goodbye.”

Focus Features announced on Thursday that the third Downton Abbey feature is called Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

The latest entry in the period drama would appear to be the last. New teaser art bears the legend: “The time has come to say goodbye.”
