Rage Review: HBO’s Stylish Masterclass in Anger
Image
In the ever-expanding universe of streaming content, a new Spanish series arrives not with a whisper but a shriek. “Rage” sets its stage in a hyper-modern Madrid, yet its concerns are timeless, distilled into a potent, high-octane dark comedy. The central idea is simple: what happens when women, pushed past their breaking point by a thousand daily indignities, finally push back?

The show presents an ensemble of female characters whose lives are beginning to fray from the pressures of deceit, professional obsolescence, and profound disrespect. Their deep-seated frustrations erupt in ways that are as shocking as they are bitterly funny.

This is a story about revenge, but one served with such explosive energy and unpredictable consequences that it feels less like a calculated plot and more like a necessary, chaotic exorcism. It captures a distinctly contemporary feeling of being utterly fed up.

The Five Faces of Vengeance

The series presents...

Max Spain Originals Chief On HBO Max Name Change: “We Cannot Lose The Value Of HBO” – Conecta Fiction
Image
Max’s Director for Local Original Productions in Spain has vowed the move back to the HBO Max moniker “doesn’t change the creative focus.” Instead, he predicted it would amplify the quality on the streamer.

“Many of you are asking what has happened,” Jose Maria Caro said at Conecta Fiction in Spain today about the decision, which was announced in the U.S. last month. “What does it change mean? Well, we cannot lose the value of HBO because it means many things to many people. It contributes a lot of value.”

Warner Bros Discovery announced in May it was moving away from Max and back to the HBO Max moniker that the global streamer had launched with in 2020. The rebrand is taking place this summer, and Caro said the move was a significant one.

“What’s in a name? It really matters to our editorial line,” he said,...

The Last Night at Tremore Beach has dropped on Netflix, and the show has everything it takes to become the next sensation for the streaming service. The Last Night at Tremore Beach Review: A Story Lost at Sea
Image
Oriol Paulo has made a name for himself producing complex thriller films that keep audiences guessing. His work is known for imaginative plots and ambiguities that stay with viewers long after the final scene. In The Last Night at Tremore Beach, Paulo aims to once again unsettle and intrigue through an unorthodox tale of premonitions and past trauma.

We meet the protagonist Alex, a renowned composer, as he’s endured a personally disturbing incident and retreated to the seaside town of Tremore. Here on the isolated coast, Alex hopes to find peace in his work. But strange things begin occurring in Tremore, exacerbated when a freak lightning strike hits Alex one night. He suddenly experiences unnervingly realistic visions that may foretell events.

With this set-up, the series grabs our attention through its atmospheric setting and Alex’s mystifying new “gift.” We’re left wondering if his visions are psychologically-driven or something more,...

‘Zorras’ Heads to Mipcom as Bestselling Writer Noemí Casquet Talks Up Friendship and ‘True Sexual Freedom’
Image
In the Spanish comedy drama series “Zorras,” based on the Noemí Casquet best selling novel of the same name, Andrea Ros, Mirela Balic, and Tai Fei play Alicia, Emily, and Diana, three women from very different backgrounds. They find a commonality, however, in a desire for friendship and exploration of themselves through sexual experimentation and novelty.

“Zorras” might translate as “sluts” or “tramps.” The show flips such terms and acts such as bondage on their head.

“I really think it’s about empowering ourselves through those words that have been pejorative to us throughout our existence simply by living and doing with our lives what we want to do with our lives,” Casquet told Variety.

“The term ‘sluts’ has always been very derogatory regardless of how many times we slept with someone. What this series wants to do is to turn the term around. To stop hurting us and to...

‘Through My Window: Across the Sea’ (2023) Movie Review: Adolescence, Maturity. . and Ice Cream
Through My Window: Across the Sea is a film directed by Marçal Forés starring Clara Galle and Julio Peña.

It is a story about teenagers and a sequel to “Through the Window,” which takes the elements that made the first movie a success, emphasizes them, and gives them (especially at the end) a touch of maturity.

However, let’s be honest, nothing will make us forget the scene of the girl licking the ice cream in the pool with a parallel montage of the boys practicing… erotic games.

Yes, you can imagine it perfectly.

Through My Window: Across the Sea About the Movie

From the beginning, the movie is clear: the first movie had it clear, that the important thing was to accentuate the “spicier” scenes to fill the rest of the script. This also happens in action movies, where if you remove the chase scenes and such, the rest...

‘Love at First Kiss’ Netflix Movie. Review: A Spanish Flavoured Rom-Com
Image
Love at First Kiss (Eres Tú) is a romantic comedy directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa starring Álvaro Cervantes and Silvia Alonso.

Love at First Kiss is a romantic comedy with all the flaws and virtues of the genre and all its familiar, tender and charmingly repetitive stereotypes.

This time it has all the humor of literature and its jokes about writers with self-destructive tendencies who are somewhat alcoholic and that, back to the stereotypes, we find very funny.

May you enjoy it in all its predefined charm.

Movie Review Love at First Kiss

Charming, tender, romantic and funny, what is a romantic comedy with its virtues is very easy to see, and its flaws are forgotten as soon as it ends.

An entertaining joke-dispensing machine about couples and sentimental relationships that, coincidentally and due to the genre’s craft and humour, ends with that magic of giving hope to human beings who,...

Todd Field’s Return With Tár, Cannes Winner ‘Triangle Of Sadness’ Lead Busy Arthouse Weekend – Specialty Preview
Image
Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. The film premiered at Venice winning star Cate Blanchett Best Actress as musician and conductor Lydia Tár. Early this week, it seemed to mesmerize a sold-out Alice Tully Hall at the New York Film Festival.

A 97 with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline’s review here called Field’s first film since Little Children 16 years ago, a “daring and quite comprehensive immersion in a rarified world [that] features a lead performance the likes of which doesn’t come along very often.” Field wrote the part for Blanchett but at an NYFF Q&a he said he waited to send her the script until it was done and Focus chairman Peter Kujawski “asked me, ‘Who do you have in mind?’ I said I was still thinking about it. Because I was superstitious. That she would say no.

A Bullied Teenager Plots Revenge in First Trailer for Piggy
Image
A premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Carlota Pereda’s Piggy takes a Carrie-esque look at fighting back at bullies with a horror twist. Set in rural Spain, the film follows Sara, a teenager who is subject to ruthlessly bullying. During the sweltering summertime of rural Spain, Sara carries an extra load of teenage agony due to the perpetual bullying from her peers. She’s also an outsider at home—her parents and little brother just don’t understand her—so, feelings internalized, she’s often found buried in her headphones, drowning out her surroundings. One day, Sara’s usual solo dip at the local pool is disrupted by the presence of a mysterious stranger...

New US Trailer for Meta Filmmaking Comedy 'Official Competition'
Antonio Banderas at an event for The Skin I Live In (2011)
"Wait, it doesn't end there." IFC Films has finally revealed an official US trailer for Official Competition, the amusing Argentinian satire about making an indie film for film festivals. It's made by two Argentinian filmmakers, and the film co-stars the powerhouse duo Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. A wealthy businessman hires an enigmatic art-house filmmaker to help make an award-winning film based on a Nobel Prize-winning novel. She casts two superstar leads that hate each other. Alternating between exacerbating the actors' mutual antipathy and uniting in their shared discomfort with her psychologically tumultuous rehearsal techniques, Lola seeks to capture the drama of two alpha males vying for the limelight — but it won't be long before the gambit goes off the rails. Also starring Irene Escolar, Melina Matthews, Oscar Martínez, Pilar Castro, Manolo Solo, and Karina Kolokolchykova. This premiered last year at both the Venice & Toronto Film Festivals (here's the teaser...
