‘Assassin’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Danny Dyer, Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Anouska Mond, Deborah Moore, Robert Cavanah, Holly Weston, Paul Terry, Natalia Ryumina, Bruce Lawrence, Kris Sommerville | Written and Directed by J.K. Amalou

What can we say about Danny Dyer? Well that you probably had a reaction to that name at least shows that he has an impact on the pop culture of movies and television. This isn’t going to be a review that takes a look at him at his worst though, or even his best, but we can’t get away from the fact that Assassin is a film that is using not only his star quality but that of Martin and Gary Kemp to get some attention. Not to say that is a bad thing though.

In Assassin Danny Dyer plays the part of Keith a cold-faced assassin given the job to kill a business man who has managed to...

Vincent Regan, Seb Castang, and Csilla Barath-Bastaic in AB Negative (2014)
Japanese distributor picks up Neil Horner’s crime thriller from Jinga Films.

Chance iN has acquired Ab Negative for Japan from Jinga Films.

Neil Horner’s crime thriller stars Vincent Regan, Seb Castang, Robert Cavanagh and Stephen Marcus, and follows two hit men who become the subject of a sadistic game of revenge.

Jinga’s Julian Richards commented: “Ab Negative combines classic British gangster tropes with an intricate plot more typical of American crime thrillers. It may look like another Lock Stock but it has more in common with Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects.”

Ab Negative has also been picked up by Invincible Pictures for North America, who are planning a theatrical release in April 2015.

Advertising and revolution form an unlikely but powerful allegiance in this factually based Chilean movie, in which archive TV footage blends seamlessly with a bold, retro-video aesthetic. It's 1988 and, bowing to international pressure, General Pinochet has ceded 15 minutes of state airtime to the campaign to vote against him. Enter Bernal as a smart ad exec charged with "selling" democracy, though his Coke-commercial strategy exposes political divisions, media ironies and personal vulnerabilities.

Film Review: 'The Fall of the Essex Boys'
★★☆☆☆ "If you think you know this story..." the audience is told at the outset of the latest film to cover the 1995 Rettendon killings, "...think again." The problem with this assertion is that Paul Tanter's film, The Fall of the Essex Boys (2012), is the fourth film to tackle the subject matter in little over a decade. Presenting the tale through the eyes of 'supergrass' Darren Nicholls may provide a marginally different view, but ultimately this is tired genre fare that delivers little in the way of insight. Accompanied by a superfluous voiceover from Nicholls (Nick Nevern), we follow him and fellow crook Mickey (Robert Cavanah) smuggling drugs over from Amsterdam.

The Fall Of The Essex Boys Review
We’re back in that muddy, rainy, remote country lane in Rettendon, Essex again with director Paul Tanter’s (The Hooligan Wars, Jack Falls) new angle on who was responsible for the deaths of Essex drug dealers Tony Tucker, Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe in December 1995 in The Fall of the Essex Boys.

The grizzly crime mystery has dominated Brit gangster folklore, always posing a fresh challenge for whoever brings another version to the big screen. Tanter has found another theory intriguing enough to rouse interest and provide an appealing watch, but it still falls victim to the clichéd Brit crime flick trap that such a genre film simply can’t escape from.

After the death of an ex-copper’s 18-year-old daughter from a bad ecstasy pill supplied by the notorious Essex Boys firm at Raquel’s nightclub in Basildon, Essex, Detective Inspector Stone (Ewan Ross) starts to see the...

Due out in cinemas early next month, The Fall of the Essex Boys is the latest film following in the footsteps of Rise of the Footsoldier and Bonded by Blood.

Coming from director Paul Tanter (Jack Falls, The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan), the latest entry into the British gangster/true crime thriller genre is on the cusp of release here in the UK, and we’ve been given an exclusive clip to share with you.

“In the tradition of Rise Of The Footsoldier and Bonded By Blood, this film follows the rise and violent fall of the notorious Essex Boys, one of the most feared criminal gangs in Britain’s history. For the first time the real story is revealed in this film – the drugs, the violence and of course the murders. The real story is the most shocking of all.”

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time (12A)

(Mike Newell, 2010, Us) Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina. 116 mins

You can tell by the title, the presence of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the colossal expense how badly this wants to be the next Pirates Of The Caribbean. But it follows the family-friendly franchise formula so slavishly, there are few surprises. On the plus side, the leads are perfectly likable, the pace lively and the Arabian-themed spectacle impressive, but the British accents and incongruous Iraq-invasion parallel only point up what a dubious post-Orientalist wish-fulfilment it really is.

Bad Lieutenant (18)

(Werner Herzog, 2009, Us) Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer. 122 mins

At last Herzog finds a replacement for the infamous Klaus Kinski, as Cage's long-repressed wild side is, er, uncaged, in an ironic portrait of post-Katrina cop corruption. Nothing like the original, it's more of an insane black comedy, with pulp crime...

Film review: Pimp
There's nothing to recommend Danny Dyer's mock-doc about the Soho sex industry – it's just plain unpleasant, writes Cath Clarke

Now relieved of his Zoo magazine column, Danny Dyer shows his gentler side in this grotty stumble through Soho's sleazy brothels. Only kidding. He plays a porn baron, Stanley, and chews his way through such gems as: "Break that little tart in. Get her on her back." Classy. Writer/director Robert Cavanah portrays one of his pimps, who has a taste for poetry and suspects his girls are being bumped off in extreme pornos ("No one is going to get snuffed on my watch"). This really is snoringly predictable and Cavanah nonsensically presents it as footage filmed by a documentary team: a real doco unit would have scarpered to the nearest cop shop after witnessing five seconds of beatings and torture. With nil insight – into the sex industry or anything...
