C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The first C.H.U.D became a culturally relevant movie for multiple reasons and against all odds also worked its way into the greater pop culture zeitgeist. I argued that the first movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time a bit ago and while I stand by that, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it either. C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. is a wild ride of a sequel that certainly didn’t need to exist but is somehow more fun than the predecessor. Its also a better sequel in a franchise that it doesn’t technically exist in! Can’t wait to get into that aspect. Most of you love C.H.U.D. but I’m here to tell you why C.H.U.D. II is a great black sheep that straddles the end of the 80s and start to the 90s. I doubt I’ll sway anyone onto my side of...

The Twilight Zone: Every Movie & TV Series In The Franchise, Ranked
Image
The original "Twilight Zone" is one of those rare shows that serve as the yardstick for the entire medium of television, which is especially impressive when you remember how all over the place its stories can be. The most notable episodes of "The Twilight Zone" alone range from "Time Enough at Last" to "Eye of the Beholder" (a legendary take on body horror). The only reliable throughlines here are the inventive speculative premises, wild plot twists, and clever parables. Apart from them, anything and everything is possible in the "Zone."

Because of the original show's sheer impact on popular culture, it's no surprise that "The Twilight Zone" at large has grown into a loose franchise that spans over six decades and numerous movies and TV shows. Academy Award winners and visionaries have given their best shot at the property over the years, but how have they succeeded? Let's find out...

Lucky Review
Image
Horror has always been a genre that reflects its times. In the wake of #MeToo and an increased focus on the experiences and the prominence of women, both in the film industry and more generally, we have seen female writers and directors seek to fold those themes into genre cinema. Perhaps the most notable examples being the recent remakes of Black Christmas (directed by Sophia Takal) and The Craft (directed by Zoe Lister-Jones). With Lucky, writer/star Brea Grant and director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) aren’t reinterpreting one specific text through that lens, rather they’re filtering a whole subgenre: the slasher.

May (Grant) is a writer just finishing her book tour. One night, she wakes to see a masked man outside her house. When she wakes her husband Ted (Dhruv Uday Singh) he seems nonplussed, confusing May by telling her ‘that’s the guy who shows up every...

Is this a thrilling, Chinatown-like Hollywood mystery, or a semi-docu about the making of the first TV Superman show? Or is it going to shed light on the mysterious death of actor George Reeves, the childhood hero we couldn’t believe had died by his own hand? Allen Coulter’s well-crafted show has a lot to say and says it well with an excellent cast… yet it needed something it doesn’t deliver. If you don’t require your movieland mysteries tied up in a neat bow, this could fit the bill.

She Sings to the Stars in the First Clip Premiere of Jennifer Corcoran’s Drama
She Sings to the Stars (2015)
Hope can be found in the most unexpected places, as anything is truly possible, is the powerful message that Larry Cedar is affirming in his new drama, ‘She Sings to the Stars.’ The indie film, which features the ‘Deadwood’ alum as a magician who’s setting out to inspire people to pursue their goals, is motivating audiences in its first clip. In support of the movie’s captivating message, Shockya is graciously premiering the video, ahead of the drama’s wide theatrical release later this year. In addition to Cedar, ‘She Sings to the Stars,’ which was produced by Circeo Films, also features Fannie Loretto and Jesus Mayorga. The drama marks the feature [ Read More ]

‘Justice League: Gods and Monsters’ Review
Stars: Benjamin Bratt, Michael C. Hall, Tamara Taylor, Paget Brewster, C. Thomas Howell, Jason Isaacs, Dee Bradley Baker, Eric Bauza, Larry Cedar, Richard Chamberlain, Trevor Devall, Dan Gilvezan, Grey Griffin, Daniel Hagen, Penny Johnson Jerald | Written by Alan Burnett, Bruce Timm | Directed by Sam Liu

Plot:

In an alternate reality, the Justice League is a brutal force that the World fears and distrusts. So when the Jl are framed for a series of murders, no-one is exactly jumping to their defence and it is up to Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman to figure this out for themselves and ultimately save the day.

Verdict:

Now this is more like it.

After efforts like Justice League:War, Son of Batman and Batman vs Robin. Justice League: Gods and Monsters is a real breath of fresh air and a sign that DC Animation can be as good as they used to be, which was a long while ago.

Mad Men (2007)
Review: 'Mad Men' - 'The Milk and Honey Route': For old times' sake
Mad Men (2007)
A review of last night's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as I'm the quick brown fox... "We both know things can't be undone." -Trudy "Says who?" -Pete "Mad Men" has chronicled a period of enormous social change (and taken place in a time of enormous change in television), yet it's often seemed agnostic on whether individual change is possible. Over the course of the series, fashions shifted and opportunities rose for women and minorities, but were the "Mad Men" characters themselves really changing with the times? Peggy has certainly grown, yet we've seen Don and Roger and Joan and others have epiphany after epiphany, only to eventually lean back on their old habits. (And even Peggy hasn't been immune to stagnation in her personal life, even as she's evolved professionally.) If anything, Don's frequent backsliding has been one of the most common complaints I've heard about the series'...

'The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord': Theater Review
Jean-Paul Sartre
Sporting a title so long that the average online reader might not even get through it, Discord reconfigures Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit through the filter of Steve Allen’s Emmy-winning 1977-1981 PBS series Meeting of the Minds. Trapped in a locked, baldly-lit white room, three deceased geniuses articulately thrash out their contending views of Scripture as much out of the entrenched stubbornness of their morally compromised egos as their passionate convictions. All three had in their lifetimes enthusiastically applied razor and blue pencil to the St. James Version. Patrician agrarian democrat Thomas Jefferson (Larry Cedar) was not

Premiere Photos: Christopher Folino’s Sparks
Sparks is a phenomenal new period superhero movie co-directed by Christopher Folino and Todd Burrows. It stars Chase Williamson as the title hero, Ashley Bell, Clancy Brown, Jake Busey, William Katt and Clint Howard. It is currently playing in limited theatrical release — and is well worth seeing in the theater — and streaming on iTunes.

The Underground Film Journal’s Executive Editor, Mike Everleth, attended a special screening on March 16 during the movie’s opening weekend, at which filmmaker Folino and stars Bell, Katt and Howard were in attendance. The photo above and those in the gallery below were all taken at this event.

Folino previously solo directed the award-winning indie comedy Gamers, which the Journal was a fan and supporter of back in the day. (Gamers is also currently streaming on Amazon.)

As enjoyable as Gamers is, Sparks is a tremendous leap in content, style and execution. Based on the...

Review: Midnight Son
Midnight Son

Stars: Shawn-Caulin Young, Tracey Walter, Larry Cedar, Arlen Escarpeta, Kevin McCorkle, Juanita Jennings, Maya Parish | Written and Directed by Scott Leberecht

Vampires! Bloody vampires! Are they still cool? As I’ve mentioned in many a review for this site, we just can’t seem to get enough of them. Every other film, book or TV series seems to be about vampires these days. I had thought this fad would have passed by now. Isn’t time some other monster got some screen time? How about a tween romance featuring fishmen? Or a sexy TV series starring a group of mummies? I guess the reason why vampires remain so popular is obvious really. As I once wrote in an essay, wonderfully entitled, ‘Pair a literary work and a film and analyse how each represents ‘gender’ and ‘sexuality’; Compare and contrast how each accomplishes this task in the specific medium,...

Hitman: Absolution Features A Hollywood Cast
Through press release means, Square Enix has announced that, much like Sleeping Dogs before it, Io Interactive’s Hitman: Absolution features a recognizable celebrity cast.

In fact, found within the list of actors who lent themselves to the game through motion capture and recording devices, sits Powers Boothe, along with Keith Carradine, Vivica A. Fox and Shannyn Sossamon. They may not be some of Hollywood’s elite these days, but they’re quality actors nonetheless, and their inclusion should lend a lot of authenticity to the assassination-focused title.

For more information regarding November’s Hitman: Absolution and its voice cast, check out the following release:

Copenhagen (October 25, 2012) – Io Interactive A/S, a Square Enix studio, today reveals the stunning main cast of Hitman: Absolution. This very talented group of well known Hollywood actors was brought together to fulfill Hitman: Absolution’s cinematic storytelling ambition.

Vff '12: Midnight Son's Hidden Messages: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Scott Leberecht.

Cast: Tracey Walter, Arlen Escarpeta and Larry Cedar.

Very rarely can the vampire tale of legend ever get twisted around to the Nth degree so that something new can be bled out of it. Midnight Son nicely offers a new interpretation of yore, and viewers should take note: maybe vampirism is a disease. Very few tales takes this angle and it’s not an easy one to cure. Instead, this story details the metamorphosis of becoming the beast.

That transformation not only looks at the life of Jacob (Zak Kilberg) but also explores the feelings of Mary (Maya Parish). They both want a new drug, one of life and a love that they want to share for one another. But when he reveals his condition of why he can’t go out into the sun without being burnt to Mary, a wall between them is being developed.
