Before David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, there was Marc Bolan. As the frontman for T. Rex, Bolan was a foundational force of glam rock, putting on glitter and feather boas with an androgynous swagger that reshaped the look and sound of 1970s Britain.
The documentary AngelHeaded Hipster attempts to capture his legacy through a unique lens: the creation of a modern tribute album produced by the late Hal Willner. This structure immediately splits the film into two distinct parts.
One is a biographical journey using rich archival material to tell Bolan’s story. The other is a contemporary, behind-the-scenes look at artists like Nick Cave and U2 recording their interpretations of his work. The film’s central question becomes how these two narratives, past and present, speak to each other.
A Starman in the Archives
The most potent parts of the film are, without question, the moments spent with Bolan himself.

Nick Cave hasn’t always held artificial intelligence in the highest regard. Back in 2023, a fan sent him a song that ChatGPT had generated “in the style of Nick Cave,” to which the musician bluntly responded: “The apocalypse is well on its way.”
But Cave’s opinion has changed somewhat after the filmmaker Andrew Dominik used AI to create a new music video for “Tupelo” on the occasion of the song’s 40th anniversary. “As I watched Andrew’s surreal little film, I felt my view of AI as an artistic device soften,...

AI is coming for us all, and it has come for Nick Cave. Having previously said he finds certain AI applications “unbelievably disturbing” and worries about “the humiliating effect that AI will have on us as a species,” the artist has now shared a video marking the 40th anniversary of the Bad Seeds track “Tupelo” with a completely AI Elvis Presley.
In a post on his The Red Hand Files, Cave noted that his friend and filmmaker Andrew Dominik created the AI “Tupelo” clip without Cave’s knowledge. Dominik intended it as a “gift” to celebrate the song’s 40th birthday, and told Cave to “suspend your fucking prejudices and take a look.”

"There's been a change in England and we are part of the change." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a music documentary film called AngelHeaded Hipster, also a reference to the poem "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg. "Angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night..." The film first premiered back in 2022 and never opened in the US - it's only now finally hitting theaters three years later. The film is inspired by the complex and revolutionary music and lyrics of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, the glam rock powerhouse behind "Bang a Gong (Get it On)" and other iconic songs. Featuring archival performances and interviews with Elton John, Ringo Starr, and David Bowie, plus filmed musical interpretations by artists such as Nick Cave, John Cameron Mitchell, Joan Jett, Macy Gray, U2, and Father John Misty. Nick Cave said Morrissey recently contacted him with an offer to provide vocals on a new song of his. It’s something Cave, a longtime fan, said he “would have been happy to do,” were it not for the fact that Morrissey wasn’t asking him to sing a verse or provide backing vocals, but intro the track with “an unnecessarily provocative” spoken-word speech.

Nick Cave has opened up about his relationship with fellow singer-songwriter Morrissey, telling fans in his Red Hand Files newsletter that he admires the artist greatly but he “politely declined” a recent opportunity to collaborate with him.
Cave has supported Morrissey’s musical efforts in the past, writing in his newsletter in 2019 that although Morrissey’s political statements were “inanities,” his catalogue has “enhanced the lives of his many fans beyond recognition.” While it appears his overall ‘separate the art from the artist’ stance remains unchanged, he took to his newsletter once again to delve into a recent request from Morrissey that crossed the line.
When asked by a fan named Astrid about his relationship with Morrissey, Cave wrote, “I’ve never actually met Morrissey, which is probably why I like him. He is undeniably a complex and divisive figure, someone who takes more than a little pleasure in pissing people off.

Lykke Li has released a new EP of covers.
Titled Covers, the three-song project sees the Swedish singer deliver renditions of “Into My Arms” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, and “Love Hurts’ by The Everly Brothers, showcasing her haunting croon and knack for minimalist arrangements.
The cover of “Into My Arms,” in particular, builds off the stripped back tone of Cave’s original, building out the sonic space with an ethereal, swirling atmosphere and reverb-clad melodies, all while retaining the intimacy of Cave’s lyrics.
Covers arrives today via Play It Again Sam as a surprise, and can be streamed below.
Covers is Li’s first collection of songs since her 2022 album, Eyeye, and follows another cover (of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”) released in March 2024.
For more, revisit Li’s 2022 appearance on The Story Behind the Song discussing her song “No Rest for the Wicked.

“Sunday Love,” a Bruce Springsteen ballad that’s premiering today that’s officially coming out as part of the Tracks II: The Lost Albums box set, finds the singer-songwriter in crooner mode.
With horns and strings, the song recalls the best of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s melodramatic production, while the way his vocal performance flirts lightly with the swinging drums suggests he was interested in Jimmy Webb western pastiche while writing it. “Each night I pray, each night I pray to God above,” Springsteen sings, “I never had a Sunday love.

One of the most unusual visitors to this year’s Cannes Film Festival was a 65-year-old Irishman named Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono to the world at large and especially to the millions of fans of his rock band U2. In 2022, Bono wrote a memoir called “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” which he promoted with a handful of theatrical shows in which he talked about his life, played characters including his father, with whom he had a troubled relationship, and sang a few U2 songs accompanied by the Jacknife Lee Ensemble, a cello/harp/keyboards trio that sounds nothing like U2.
The show found Bono sharing the stage with three empty chairs, which represented his missing bandmates The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. It made for a dramatic night of memories, and he upped the drama by hiring Andrew Dominik who directed “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford...

Tom Hardy has stepped into the shoes of many iconic roles over the years, and he’s developed one of the most dedicated fan bases of any actor working in Hollywood today. Hardy has put his life on the line starring in action movies over the last 20 years, so much so that he’s given public statements about the poor condition of his body after years of doing his own stunts. As with any Hollywood star, Hardy is often approached by fans out in public who ask for a picture or ask him to deliver one of the many legendary lines from his filmography. During a recent interview with The Huffington Post UK to promote his newest action movie, Havoc, Hardy revealed the one fan request he’s become extremely comfortable denying:
"Some people might like me to do an impression or a voice of a character. Like Bane, most of the time.

Editor’s Note: This review was first published during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Vertical releases “The New Boy” in select theaters Friday, May 23, 2025.
The spark of life that gave Warwick Thornton what is now “The New Boy” took 18 years to flicker, and then fully glow. The Australian filmmaker looked to his own childhood, raised by monks, to find the spiritual fairy tale that now manifests via the film’s eponymous Aboriginal child in a sweeping and poetic portrait of stifled faith and the threat of monopoly on religion.
Thornton’s cinema is one of enormous, orchestral music and vast landscapes that envelop and invite us in, even if you feel like you don’t know where you’re going or shouldn’t be allowed to look around. Formed in 2005, Grinderman was created to explore a more raw, primal sound than The Bad Seeds and lean closer to Cave’s earlier post-punk project, The Birthday Party. Their debut album, Grinderman, was universally acclaimed upon its release and spawned the singles “No Pussy Blues” and “Get It On.” Its follow-up, Grinderman 2, took a more psychedelic approach, while Grinderman 2 Rmx featured reinterpretations from artists including Robert Fripp, Josh Homme, Unkle, and Nick Zinner.

Judging by the sudden spike in high-concept AIDS allegories hitting the festival circuit, it must have been the shock of Covid-19 that sent so many artists’ minds racing back to that previous pandemic. In many ways, the mistakes in handling that crisis taught us how to approach subsequent outbreaks in a more humane way.
Premiering in competition at the Cannes Film Festival two years after “Titane” took the Palme d’Or, Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha” is one of three science fiction entries at this year’s fest in which an imaginary, allegorical illness allows a filmmaker to revisit the trauma and tragedy of the AIDS crisis. “Alpha” is by far the most exasperating of these movies, at once bluntly obvious and maddeningly unclear, taking as its protagonist a 13-year-old girl (Mélissa Boros) who comes home from a party with a crude homemade tattoo.
What was the needle like? Was it clean or dirty?...

Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond.
Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been almost frighteningly quiet. There was a single big deal — Mubi’s $24 million multi-territory deal, including North America, the U.K., Latin America and other countries — for the Lynne Ramsay’s Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson starrer Die, My Love. It was a major deal for a finished film but also threw into sharp relief the lack of major pre-sales at Cannes so far, despite a market featuring jam-packed with hot packages.

I’d love to see Mick Jagger do a one-man show, looking back over his life with the Rolling Stones and his private life without them. Jagger has always been a witty and observant raconteur, and he must have a zillion stories that could singe our eyebrows. Bruce Springsteen’s one-man show, “Springsteen on Broadway,” which opened in 2017, was often bracing, because Springsteen seized the chance to present sides of himself that undercut his image — like the fact that after all his turmoil-of-the-working-man rock ‘n’ roll songs, he is someone who had never even set foot in a factory.

Leave it to Bono to turn a book tour into something as extravagant as “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” the Apple TV+ movie that had its world premiere on Friday night at the Cannes Film Festival.
The U2 singer has never been one for half-measures or modesty, and his version of the book tour for his 2022 autobiography “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” was a dramatic, theatrical presentation that mixed memory and music to provide snapshots from his life, from a child in Dublin to an international rock star. Presented on a small number of stages around the world, most notably during a 10-night stand in New York’s Beacon Theatre, it was no book reading or stripped down “Springsteen on Broadway”-style presentation, but a sensory delight as theatrical in its own way as U2’s own performances.

Right now, hundreds of TV program buyers are in the air flying to Los Angeles for the annual LA Screenings. It might not be the all-singing, all-dancing party week of yesteryear, but buying sources we’ve spoken to for this report ahead of the studio get-togethers have been stressing its importance as they attempt to navigate increasingly fragmented and complicated pictures in their home markets.
While there are more industry events than ever, with the London TV Screenings in particular stealing others thunder, there is a broad optimism from those heading to the Californian sunshine (and the darkened cinemas on the studio lots). On the back of a hectic Upfronts week, the network schedules are becoming clearer, but what breaks out internationally is still guesswork.
Donald Trump’s tariffs talk has added extra confusion to the mix, and the aftershocks of both the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes are still being felt globally.

Earl Cave hopes Cannes audiences walk out of The Chronology of Water.
“It’s a very bold and quite outrageous film,” the young star teases. “If everyone sat there liking it, something’s wrong. If there’s people running out screaming, I think it’s a good sign.”
The Brit is the son of rocker Nick Cave — best known as frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds — and it must be said, the resemblance is striking.
The younger Cave, with a mop of jet black hair and thick eyebrows just like his father, is talking to The Hollywood Reporter about being directed by Kristen Stewart in her feature film debut.
“She is the most generous director [and] it was the most beautiful sight to behold,” the 24-year-old gushes. “Her being an actor, she’d just do these things that directors would never do, which was so refreshing. She’d say,...

Red Hot Chili Peppers vocalist Anthony Kiedis has followed in the footsteps of Green Day by launching his own coffee brand.
The company is named Jolene, an amalgamation of the phrases “cup of Joe” and “lean latte” (the latter of which refers to a latte without whole milk), while also referencing Dolly Parton’s iconic song. Co-founded with Kiedis’ longtime friend Shane Powers, the brand offers two varieties of canned coffee: Black (cold brew) and White (oat milk latte).
Jolene sources its beans from an all-female co-op in Peru, aiming to ensure “high-quality beans while directly supporting the women growers and their communities,” according to a press release.
Kiedis and Powers have partnered with Live Nation, which will act as both an investor and distributor of Jolene at festivals and 40 of its venues. In addition to the canned offerings, the concert promoter will feature the coffee in four signature cocktails.

Last week, Nicolas Cage made headlines by claiming he is frequently “mistaken” for Nick Cave due to “only one letter” separating their last names. Now, Cave has shared an amusing anecdote about posing as the actor while speaking to a heartbroken man named Diego in Brazil.
In his latest Red Hand Files newsletter, the musician responded to fan questions about the Cage interview by recalling a story of drunkenly stumbling into a bar while he was living in São Paulo, where he met the “downcast” and “maudlin” Diego, who got really excited when the bartender told him he was talking to Nick Cave. Unfortunately, Diego had mixed up Cave’s name with that of his wife’s favorite actor, Nic Cage.

Nicolas Cage is a one-of-a-kind actor, but that doesn't mean he's not often confused with another celebrity. Cage has named the person he seems to get confused with the most, though it comes down to having similar names more than a physical resemblance.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cage was asked about Aussie musician Nick Cave. Cage shared that he's confused with Cave often, though it's not the only musician people mistake him for. With that said, Cage remembers when he once met Cave at an animal sanctuary. It wasn't lost on the two how similar their names were, and Cage recalled mentioning that to Cave in person.
"I don’t think there’s a day that goes by where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave. People also say: 'Hey, Nick, you were great in The Hunger,' which is this great David Bowie movie [in which Cage doesn’t feature]," Cage said.

Nicolas Cage’s day isn’t complete unless he gets mistaken for Nick Cave at least once. In a recent interview with the Guardian, the actor revealed how frequently people swap his identity with the musician’s and detailed one of their first encounters with each other.
“I don’t think there’s a day that goes by where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave,” Cage said. “People also say: ‘Hey, Nick, you were great in The Hunger,’ which is this great David Bowie movie. I do remember that Cave was very nice.

Self-proclaimed goth Nicolas Cage has joked about frequently being “mistaken” for goth rock pioneer Nick Cave due to the similarities in the spellings of their names.
“I don’t think there’s a day that goes by where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave,” the actor — nay, thespian — recently told The Guardian in response to a reader’s question. Cage then recalled his pleasant meeting with his almost namesake.

Nick Cave and Richard Ayoade are among those reading out the posthumously discovered missives that inspired an album by Emilíana Torrini, who soundtracks this gorgeous film
You’d be forgiven for not having heard of Geraldine Flower, the subject of A new film from artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the pair behind the 2014 Nick Cave documentary 20,000 Days on Earth. The Scream 7family gets bigger with some returning figures that will rekindle the flame that Wes Craven created almost 30 years ago. Marco Beltrami, the composer behind the music of the first four Scream films, has revealed that he will do Scream 7. The music veteran behind major works like A Quiet Place and Logan confirmed this on social media, and suddenly, Scream 7 just got a bit more exciting.
At first, Beltrami wasn't announced as the official composer of Scream 7. Nevertheless, a few weeks ago, a fan pleaded for him to do Scream 7 by commenting on a 2023 post on Instagram. "Please do Scream 7!" said the comment, to which Beltrami replied by saying, "Don't worry, I am." This marks Beltrami's return to the horror franchise after he wrote the score for the first Scream films, all directed by Wes Craven. In Scream (2022), Beltrami was replaced by Brian Tyler,...

Neil Young isn’t just one of the most covered songwriters of all time, he’s also one of the most tributed. There have been several albums of people doing his songs released over the decades, first and most famously the 1989 LP The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young, populated by artists from the then-ascendant alt-rock generation such as Nick Cave, the Flaming Lips, the Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr., fans who were just as admiring of Young’s contrarian swerves as they were of his beloved 1970s chestnuts. Look at him now: Nick Cave’s transforming. He’s vibrating. He’s glowing. He’s flying. Look at him now.
At Thursday night’s Bad Seeds concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Cave proved to a U.S. audience what Europe has known for decades: that he — rock’s gothic poet laureate, master of emotional intimacy, and, as a side hustle, introspective advice columnist — is indeed an arena rocker.
