Film Review: The Super Inframan (1975) by Hua Shan
Image
by Jack Ford

By the early 1970s, heroes of Japanese tokusatsu – in particular the formative Ultraman – had grown in popularity so much they had spread all over the Far East, including Hong Kong. It was there that their resonance with audiences caught Shaw Brothers’ attention, who sought to emulate the genre in the hope of luring fans to their version of the popular medium. The result was “The Super Inframan”, (Known as “Chinese Superman” domestically) first released in 1975, a wacky, self-spoofing knockabout action film that is among the most entertaining and unforgettable titles of its type. It is clear, just looking at the character, that Ultraman is clearly on the radar of the Shaws, who left directing duties to Hua Shan. It is not clear whether the tone taken was also an intentional decision or the filmmakers went for a more parodying approach. Whatever the truth, the final product perfectly...

Sammo Hung: Kung Fu Classics
Sammo Hung is a legend in the Kung Fu movie world and rightly so, starring and directing some of the greatest Kung Fu movies in the genre. Sammo as been acting since a some child during his days at the Peking Opera school, we later seen him taking on Bruce Lee at the beginning of the classic Enter The Dragon.

So i wanted to do a run down of my favorite Sammo Hung classics, kung fu style.

Warriors Two (1978)

Starring:Casanova Wong, Leung Kar Yan, Fung Hak On, Lau Kar Wing

Verdict:One of the best wing chun movies ever made, Sammo really was on top of his game in terms of choreography. Casanova Wong is fantastic as usual with his kicking ability, Fung Hak On plays a fierce villain and Leung Kar Yan is in fine fighting form.

Casanova Wong performs a brilliant jumping spinning back kick over a table,...

King Of Kung Fu:Top 10 Kickers
This is my top 10 favorite kickers in Kung Fu cinema. It is just my personal opinion as there are many great performers out there with amazing ability also. I hope everyone likes my top 10 and please feel free to leave comments at the bottom of the page.

10.Jean Claude Van Damme

Jean Claude is one of the best kickers i have seen out of the Asian movie market. His jumping spin kicks are brilliant, hitting with speed and power, which would take anyone’s head off. Van Damme was also a former member of the Belgium Team that won the European Championships in 1979 in Brussels.

Some of Van Dammes best kicking skills can be watched in movies such as No Retreat, No Surrender, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Double Impact, The Quest and so on. He recently starred as the main villain in The Expendables 2, which he did a great job,...

Blu-ray Review: Legendary Amazons Fails To Impress
So far this year I've seen just about four hundred films either theatrically or on DVD. There is no doubt that this number is higher than the average bear. I say that to say this, Frankie Chan's Legendary Amazons is among the worst films I've seen in 2012, and I've seen some shit. There was a brief period before production began that this was a highly anticipated piece of work. Produced by Jackie Chan and directed by Frankie Chan of Armour of God II fame, Legendary Amazons had a pedigree that inspired some hope in film fans that it would be a film to look forward to. Unfortunately, the film is awful, and not even in a fun way. It is awful in a painful,...

Legendary Amazons hit the U.S
A little behind the rest of the pack, Frankie Chan’s remake (this version is based on the 1972 martial arts classic ‘The 14 Amazons’) Legendary Amazons is finally set to debut in America, via Well Go USA. Cecilia Cheung (Shaolin Soccer), Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and Liu Ziaoqing (Plastic Flowers) star as widowed wives who must lead the other widows into battle when the last of a long line of Song generals are killed. Richie Ren (Life Without Principle, Accident) also stars as Yang Zongbao, the last of the Song generals to fall. Bonus materials include a behind-the-scenes featurette and a new, optional (the only option for that in our book, is the Off position) English dub. Legendary Amazons debuts on U.S Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital....October 16th Synopsis: Yang Zongbao is the last man standing in the Yang clan, a family of generals who have dedicated...

DVD Review: Legendary Amazons
Legendary Amazons

Stars: Cecilia Cheung, Xiaoqing Liu, Richie Ren | Directed by Frankie Chan

Let me see if I can get this straight: Legendary Amazons is a Chinese martial arts flick that involves a lot of silly fighting, a morbid love affair and some highly questionable familial bonds. That’s about all I’m sure of right now.

The film, directed by Hong Kong stalwart Frankie Chan (probably most well known for composing music for Wong Kar Wai), follows the predominantly female Yang family’s struggle to keep their only remaining son alive when he is summoned to battle by the emperor. Each of the Yang clan has their own specific skill set and is proficient in battle, so there’s lots of fighting. And betrayal, switched allegiances, returns from the dead and all that good stuff. I think.

Why I’m not quite certain is telling of many of the film’s flaws.

New UK Trailer for the Jackie Chan Produced Actioner Legendary Amazons
Stick Jackie Chan’s name on anything and chances are I’ll watch it. No kidding. I even plunked down good money to see “Looking for Jackie” and “The Shinjuku Incident”, two films I could have easily lived without. Chan isn’t in veteran director Frankie Chan’s “Legendary Amazons”, but every bit of press surrounding the flick lets you know that our pal Jackie produced the flick. And while the film has received mixed reviews, I’ll still have a look at it as soon as the opportunity presents itself. That’s just the kind of unwavering fan I am. Before jumping to the latest trailer, read this: Formerly titled Lady Generals Of The Yang Family, Legendary Amazons is based on a famous Chinese opera set in the Song Dynasty. When the men of the Yang Clan were massacred in battle, the women, from elderly grandmother to little sisters,...
