Subhash K Jha Revisits Amol Palekar’s 2005 Paheli starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Amol Palekar’s Paheli, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee as it celebrates 20 years sinc it hit the big screen.

A thought so simple sweeps you into a stratosphere of supreme sublimity, images so deft, dark, and bewitching transport you into a world of yummy yearnings, and performances so clever and yet artless they make you wonder why our stars don’t jump the fence, diving mainstream and ‘other’ cinema more often….

Paheli leaves you with all these thoughts. Plus a smile.

Welcome to the folk-fettered world of Amol Palekar’s slight and tender triangle about a man, his neglected wife, and a thoughtful ghost.

The flick’s frisky and risky folk-flips are so endearingly naïve it could have fallen into a hilarious heap on the floor. To the director’s credit, the sharp contours of the folk tale and the wispy and profound...

‘Thug Life’ Review: Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s Long-Awaited Reunion Falls Frustratingly Short of Its Potential
Image
Right after the intermission, Thug Life takes a plot turn so rushed and so implausible that even a directing maestro like Mani Ratnam and an acting legend like Kamal Haasan, reuniting 38 years after the landmark hit Nayakan, can’t make it work. From there, the film slowly derails. Emotions take a backseat to action. Hurried explanations for what we see are provided via exposition or voiceover. Logic exits the frame.

A key character is threatened, but despite the obvious danger and all the power he wields and the goons at his command, he’s driving alone in the next scene down a desolate road, where of course he gets what was coming to him. Thugs hired to kill somehow bring machetes instead of guns to the fight. There is even a family reunion that feels so clumsy and designed that you can almost visualize the filmmaker moving his characters around like pieces on a chessboard.

The Legendary Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran On His Collaboration With Mani Ratnam In Thug Life
Image
Legendary cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran, talks with Subhash K Jha his work with Mani Ratnam and especially about the newly released Thug Life.

The one component of Thug Life which stood out was its cinematography. What was your brief from Mani Ratnam?

He said we will go classic style and make it look more cinematic. He wanted high contrast and deeper shadows and bright sunlight. He wanted the wedding song to have many dynamics between the characters… warm colours in the first half and cooler and gray tones in the second half in a subtle way.

What was it like getting together with the visionary after so many years?

It was a homecoming for me. I have worked as an assistant in Mani Ratnam Sir’s second film Unaroo in Malayalam (1984), which was shot by my brother Ramachandra Bab. I was an assistant then. So it’s a forty-year-long association.

“Thug Life Mani Ratnam-Kamal Hassan’s Sophomore Alliance Is Thankfully Not Nayakan” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Every frame of Thug Life, director Mani Ratnam and actor Kamal Hassan’s sophomore collaboration after Nayakan, has a story to tell. And I don’t mean that in any divisive, show-offy, art way. While we stare wondrously at what cinematographer Ravi Chandran has done to every frame we also get a drift of the individual artwork that comes together finally to give us a gangster epic on a par with Kamal-Mani’s much-revered Nayakan.

Yes, Thug Life is That good! The writing is sharp (most of the time), and the way Mani Ratnam sneaks in humour in dramatic constructs is sheer genius. Reading reviewers’ comments on the familiar ground walked by Mani Ratnam, I am reminded of what my friend Javed Akhtar said about film lyrics. “Bhai, gaane toh sab ek jaise hote hai, pyar judaai, ehsaas, milan… It is how you use words. That’s where the poetry lies.

This Day That Year: Kunal Kohli On 19 Years Of Fanaa
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits another excellent film, Fanaa, which starred Aamir Khan and Kajol in this special installment of This Day That Year. Director Kunal Kohli also shares his thoughts on the film, its longevity, and its popularity with fans today.

Send up a silent prayer for rediscovering that old lost pleasure of a powerful plot that Fanaa retrieves so affectionately for us. Also, send up a prayer for an actor like Kajol, who fills up the screen with feelings and thoughts that go way beyond the tears, fears, and jeers of a workaday movie. Writer Shibani Bathija’s powerful drama about the tumultuous romance and tragedy between a blind Kashmiri girl, Zooni (Kajol), and her guide, mentor, and tormentor, Rehaan (Aamir Khan), is suffused in the silken sounds of a heart-feeling the first stirrings of love and hurt.

Kajol expresses the delicate fragrance of a blind girl’s romantic...

Esha Deol on working with the Maestro in both the Tamil and Hindi versions of Yuva
Image
Esha Deol, who was the only actor to feature in both the Tamil and Hindi versions of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva, talks with Subhash K Jha about working with the Maestro on the excellent drama that released in 2004.

Esha, Yuva completes 21 years, fond memories?

Yuva was actually offered to me in Hindi and Tamil/ Mani sir had first offered me the Tamil version, Aayutha Ezhuthu. And I remember Shaad Ali, he came home and I was doing my dance rehearsals in a simple cotton salwar kurta and he’s like, this is it, this is it, this is what he wants. I said, ‘Who, what?’ Shaad and I have been good friends for a very long time, you know. So I said, ‘What do you mean?’ So he’s like, ‘Mani sir is making a film, it’s a Tamil film, and this is the look. ’ And I was sweating in my simple cotton salwar-kurta.

Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu’s Bhadra, a significant woman of Malayalam celluloid
Image
CinemaNo one looking at Bhadra would think of her as a femme fatale, her face is stripped of makeup, her eyes indolent. But this charade of naivety is all part of a larger plan.Neelima MenonScreengrab from Disney+ Hotstar The sun is slowly rising. A speck of orange is almost hidden behind the lazy coconut trees, and the sky has turned indigo. There is a small boat ferrying over the backwaters. Night slips into dawn, bringing a large houseboat filled with passengers. Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu builds its world in the backdrop of Kerala’s backwaters. It captures the exquisiteness of the state (cinematography by Ravi K Chandran) just as promised in the tourism brochures – the enigmatic backwaters, swinging coconut trees, acres of lush greenery, paddy fields, humongous house boats and magnificent nalukettu houses with large front and backyards. Director Tk Rajeev Kumar uses an unusual setting to unleash a tale of a simmering revenge.

Film Review: Mrs. Serial Killer (2020) by Shirish Kunder
Image
Netflix has just released the Indian production “Mrs. Serial Killer”. The film directed by Shirish Kunder is a mixture between horror thriller and horror satire.

Sona (Jacqueline Feranndez) is married to a successful gynecologist. They live in a big house and are expecting a child. When her husband Mrityunjoy (Manoj Bajpayee), in short Joy, comes home after a business trip, he is directly arrested at the airport. The policemen are sure that they finally have caught the serial killer who brutally murders and buries young women. Joy claimes his innocence and Sona believes him. She wants to do everything she can to exonerate him. To do so, she seeks advice from the criminal lawyer Mr. Rastogi (Darshan Jariwala), who, then, suggests a radical solution.

The evidence seems to be clear; DNA-samples, the location and murder techniques speak for Joy as the perpetrator. However, both the lawyer and Sona suspect that the investigator in the case,...

“Ok Jaanu Is Better Than Mani Ratnam’s Original” – Subhash K Jha review
Ok Jaanu

Starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shradha Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Leela Samson

Directed by Shaad Ali

Welcome back, Shaad Ali. It was a Mani Ratnam remake that gave us Shaad, one of the sharpest smartest directors in Saathiya. It is another Mani Ratnam remake that brings Shaad back in form after a string of duds.

Ok Jaanu (ignore the yucky title) is smart, slick heartwarming and utter endearing as Shaad, from material moulded in Mani’s imagination , forges out an urban love story set in the city that gives love a shove for more practical considerations, like making a living and realizing your ambitions.

Meet Adi and Tara, a couple so believable in their exuberant ambitions and the determination to lock their mutual adoration in a chastity belt, that you can’t help feeling exasperated at their blindness to see the obvious.

Yes, love is in the air. It’s...

Vidya Balan starrer Begum Jaan in trouble as technicians quit
Ravi K. Chandran
Soon after the soul stirring trailer of the Bengali film Rajkahini hit the tube, the Bhatt camp announced a Hindi remake of the same. Starring Vidya Balan, Begum Jaan was supposed to be based in Punjab unlike its original which was in West Bengal. However, now we hear that the film is in trouble as several departmental heads have walked out of the venture.

Speculations state the reason behind the same is financial crisis which have affected three major departments of filmmaking. Apparently, cinematographer Ravi Chandran, costume designer Payal Saluja and production designers Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborthy have walked out of the film. We hear that trouble started brewing when there were several changes added to the location, starting from Punjab it was later shifted to Hyderabad, then Rajasthan and finally landed at Kolkata, West Bengal like its original. It is being said that the makers are now on...

The gentle genius from the world of cinematography, Ravi K. Chandran is no more part of Karan Johar's production of Agneepath. ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ 2nd Review
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Ranbir Kapoor in Anjaana Anjaani (2010)
Film: ‘Anjaana Anjaani’; Starring: Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, Zayed Khan; Directed by: Siddharth Anand; Rating: *** – flounders along the way.

Romantic comedy ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ goes in to so many directions, you wonder what happened to those good old films where Boy Met Girl… and they lived happily ever laughter.

Laughter, there’s plenty of it in ‘Anjaana Anjaani’. Raucous laughter, bitter laughter, silly laughter, goofy laughter… The couple Akash and Kiara are portrayed more like two beer-swigging buddies on a road trip through the USA (shot with shimmering restlessness by Ravi Chandran) than lovers staring at the moon and dreaming of the ever-after.

These are professionally taken photos by someone who had access to our unit. They've been leaked to kill the impact of the elaborate marketing that we had planned,...

Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan (2010)
Movie Review: My Name is Khan
Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan (2010)
My Name Is Khan makes two strong statements... The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's a third designation now - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore. The second statement: There're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs. Write your own movie review of My Name Is Khan My Name Is Khan mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly,...
