20 years ago today, Teddy Chan’s The Accidental Spy hit theaters. Within star Jackie Chan’s illustrious filmography, the film is usually considered a minor entry, but it’s momentous for an entirely different reason: it marks the film debut of English martial artist and actor Scott Adkins. Although Adkins’ role is of the in-the-background, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety, this early instance of getting-one’s-foot-in-the-door proved to be historic, as it kicked off the film career of one of contemporary cinema’s greatest screen fighters. In the years immediately following this debut, the actor slowly but surely worked his way into the spotlight, demonstrating his physical prowess on the sidelines until his role...

Like so many 2020 films, Double World was slated for a major theatrical release this summer. But due to the pandemic, it has become one of the first big films to jump online in some hopes of recouping its costs. It’s a shame because Double World is the kind of film that was made for the big screen. It opens a spectacular new fantasy world, brimming with ravishing visuals. Haven’t heard of it? Don’t feel bad. It’s from China. Had 2020 gone as planned, Double World might have had a limited North American theatrical release at best, but now we can see it on Netflix.
Double World is based on a popular Mmorpg called Zhengtu, which is the movie’s original title in Chinese. Zhengtu means ‘way to conquer’. China’s massive population has the world’s largest online gaming community and Zhengtu is one of China’s top five online games,...

Chinese movie “Double World” will forgo a theatrical premiere in favor of a simultaneous online debut on Netflix and China’s streaming service iQiyi.
The news comes as China’s cinemas have yet to offer a timeline for reopening despite nearly six months of closures.
The film will stream via iQiyi in China on July 24. It will debut on Netflix, which is blocked in China, for all the other territories the platform operates in on July 25, the company confirmed Wednesday to Variety.
Made on a budget of around $43 million (RMB300 million) and comprised of 80% special effects, “Double World” will be the fifth most expensive new movie to ever premiere on iQiyi’s premium video on demand (PVOD) service, which launched in January as coronavirus took off.

Let’s be honest – when it comes to martial arts movies, the action is always front and center. If you’re a director, you better be loading your film with graceful choreography, a fury of thrown fists, and plenty of flying mid-air kicks that defy the laws of gravity. We love to watch master craftsmen kicking the absolute tar out of each other. And that’s fine, because unlike gratuitously savage action flicks with bullet-ridden corpses, martial arts is all about technique, beauty, and presentation – but even with that said, some resemblance of a rich story is necessary. It can’t be all sizzle and no steak, but that’s unfortunately what happens to Teddy Chan’s latest genre attempt. Kung Fu Killer is a movie that has plenty of the aforementioned kung fu killing, as advertised, but there’s a serious lack of plotting that makes for a very one-sided experience.

More than just another action vehicle for Ip Man superstar Donnie Yen (who, even in his early fifties, seems capable of taking down all of the Expendables), director Teddy Chan's glossy thriller pays tribute to martial-arts cinema by casting enough Hong Kong industry legends to rival the cameo count of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. It's a pity, then, that it's an undeniably bland film in style and story, despite a few elaborately staged fight sequences. Incarcerated for involuntary manslaughter, self-defense instructor and all-around badass Hahou (Yen) is given a chance for freedom if he helps the police chase a clubfooted serial killer (Wang Baoqiang) who has been targeting martial-arts masters. All the victims are being dispatched by th...

Five grandmasters hunted by a serial killer. This actually looks way better than it sounds, so give it a look. Well Go USA has released a trailer for Kung Fu Killer, a new film starring martial arts master Donnie Yen killer and a kung fu expert, who convinces the police to recruit him to track down a serial killer in return for his freedom. Sounds like the perfect kind of plot for a cheesy martial arts movie, but it seems to be a few notches above that. Charlie Yeung, Baoqiang Wang, Bing Bai, Deep Ng and Alex Fong also star in this martial arts thriller from Hong Kong. The big skeleton set piece looks cool, and all the action gets awesome in the second half of this trailer, so don't stop watching too early. I really want to see this! Enjoy. Here's the official Us release trailer for Teddy Chen's Kung Fu Killer,...

There's a new martial arts flick coming out starring Donnie Yen...and if that sentence doesn't get you excited, then you haven't watched the incredible Ip Man movies. He's a slick martial artist and his fight scenes in movies are pretty spectacular, which you can get a hint of thanks to the first trailer for his new movie, Kung Fu Killer! Come inside to check it out!
Admittedly, being a long time martial artist myself, I'm a sucker for these kung fu movies. While realism mostly goes out the window, on the whole, they're still a lot of fun and feature great fight scenes and moves. Donnie Yen is one of the biggest names in the genre right now (though not in Hollywood circles), and there's good reason for that. If you haven't seen his previous films (especially the Ip Man movies), then you're missing out. But you can at...

In Kung Fu Killer, Ip Man star Donnie Yen plays martial arts instructor Hahou, working with the police to bring down a vicious killer targeting various kung fu masters to prove himself the greatest. Amidst a variety of situations and settings – a film studio, a dinosaur skeleton, a tattoo parlour – each fight scene is more crowd-pleasing than the last. If it all sounds like a deliriously old-school martial arts movie given a deliriously 21st century twist, there’s a good reason for that – that’s exactly what it is!

Following the announcement that Kung Fu legend Donnie Yen is bringing his latest opus, Kung Fu Killer, to this year’s London Film Festival, Signature Entertainment has confirmed two spiffy bits of news. One, a wider release for the martial arts saga when it comes to cinemas on February 20th and two, it heads for DVD and digital on February 23rd. Also starring Michelle Bai and Charlie Young, Kung Fu Killer is directed by Teddy Chan (star of Infernal Affairs 2) but notably also features key action scenes directed by the legendary Yen - a real draw to martial arts fans and a contributing element to one of the kung fu blockbusters of the year. The only downside to all this is that it wont be until the new year. But we are patient, well sort off...dammit! Synopsis: Yen (Ip Man, Blade II) stars as Hahou, a former martial...

Donnie Yen plays a convicted murderer sprung from jail to help track down a serial killer targeting martial arts masters in Teddy Chen's appreciably nostalgic action thriller. While Yen wisely gifts the lion's share of the fighting to opposite number Wang Baoqiang, Kung Fu Jungle also serves as a reverential ode to the local industry, and something of a swan song for Donnie as Hong Kong's foremost action hero.Ha Hou Mo (Donnie Yen) is champion of Hong Kong's most respected martial arts sect, but turns himself over to the police after accidentally killing his latest rival. Three years later, the fatal beating of a martial arts master inspires Ha to demand a meeting with investigating officer Luk Yuen Sum (Charlie Young). Revealing that he knows...

We have a couple of treats for you from the upcoming Donnie Yen flick Kung Fu Jungle, directed by Teddy Chan. We have a new trailer, as well as a featurette with Wang Baoqiang. Both are impressive in their own right and give a taste of what is to come, even if it is in little snippets. I think what I find more impressive is that featurette with Wang Baoqiang. Let's be honest here: When you talk about martial arts in Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese cinema, his name is not one of the first few you name off. Yet, he studied martial arts at Shaolin Temple for six years and, golly, is he holding his own against Yen. ...

Donnie Yen is back, and if we're being brutally honest here, the last two years haven't seen the best of the shirtless wonder. Special I.D. was a little too goofy for our tastes, The Monkey King did big business back home but relied too heavily on CGI and gimmickry. Then there's Iceman (and potentially its upcoming sequel), which we've yet to see and really shouldn't comment on, but online reviews suggest another disappointing entry on Donnie Yen's kick-ass C.V. So you'll be forgiven for feeling a little bit anxious on this one, even though the trailer looks pretty damn impressive. What's more, Kung Fu Jungle is directed by Teddy Chan, and we were big fans of their last collaboration, Bodyguards and Assassins. Teddy also directed Purple Storm back in 1999, a personal favourite of ours at 24Fps. So maybe, just maybe, this is the return to form we have been waiting for.

Donnie Yen is back in a movie that will have fans heading to the cinema in October 2014 and it looks not to disappoint. Kung Fu Jungle looks like a creepy thriller with tons of action and after the disappointment of Special ID, i think this will more than make up for it.
The movie is directed by Teddy Chan and also co stars Charlie Yeung, Wang Baoqiang and Michelle Bai. Shaw Brothers legend David Chiang also appears in the movie, which is always great to see and i am a massive fan of his along with Donnie Yen.
Plot:
A martial arts instructor (Donnie Yen) working at a police academy gets imprisoned after killing a man by accident. But when a vicious killer (Wang Baoqiang) starts targeting martial arts masters, the instructor offers to help the police in return for his freedom.
The movie opens in October 2014.

It has been a long and bumpy road for Peter Chan, getting his new production of The Guillotines to the big screen. First announced back in 2009 with Hong Kong's man-of-the-moment Dante Lam at the helm, Teddy Chen then took the reins when Emperor Motion Pictures gave The Viral Factor the green light, only for the production to grind to a halt just weeks before shooting was set to commence. Script issues were cited, but it emerged that Chan had again fallen out with Chen (as was the case of their previous collaboration, Bodyguards and Assassins). History repeated itself, and Chen was replaced by Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs), but things finally got underway. Originally thought to be a remake of the Jimmy Wang Yu classic,...

Deadline is reporting that veteran Chinese actor Wang Xueqi, who starred alongside Donnie Yen, Nicholas Tse and Leon Lai in Teddy Chen's 2009 film Bodyguards And Assassins, has been cast in Shane Black's Iron Man 3. Wang's name has long been associated with the Marvel/Dmg co-production, which will resume filming in Beijing on Monday, but the news is apparently now official. According to the report, Wang will be taking on the "villainous" role of Dr. Wu, rather than that of Chen Lu, which actor Andy Lau was at one time connected to, and is the alter-ego of villain Radioactive Man.Wang will appear opposite Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley, among others, in the latest installment of Marvel's multi-faceted superhero juggernaut....

If you've been imagining the setting for the next "Assassin's Creed" title, you can cross feudal Japan off your list. Ditto World War II, or ancient Egypt. Back in April, the game's Creative Director Alex Hutchinson nixed these Internet favorite locales as possibly the worst ideas for locales to setting a chapter in the long-running battle between the Templars and Assassins.
And he's right. While I had my own issues with the use of the Revolutionary War and the mix of the wilderness and early cities on "Assassin's Creed III," the fundamentals of taking the action and working in a new setting were strong. Plus, the turmoil of the era provided a great backdrop for the story Ubisoft was attempting to tell (even if I wasn't a fan of how they told it).
So what are some other great periods and regions worth exploring in the next game?

“Wu Xia” or “Swordsmen” is an alluring prospect. It features two of China’s current greats: Donnie Yen (who was a spear-wielding demon in “Hero”) & Takeshi Kaneshiro (whose archery prowess kept the beautiful Zhang Ziyi safe in “House Of Flying Daggers”). There’s also a lot of firepower behind the camera thanks to Peter Chan, director of 2005′s “Perhaps Love” and 2007′s “The Warlords”. He also recently produced Teddy Chen’s “Bodyguards and Assassins”. All that being said, does it live up to expectations?
Donnie Yen is Liu Jinxi. He and his family are living an idyllic life in a sky blue and lush green countryside. He’s the operator of a paper mill but he’s, in fact, much more than that. So when two deadbeat criminals try to rob said paper mill, it’s too much to bear for our paper-maker. He fights them off, they drop dead.

The Film:
After receiving more Hong Kong Film Awards than any other film in China’s history, plus co-starring Donnie Yen, who seems to be making a movie a minute, Bodyguards and Assassins has a campy title that for the misinformed will highlight disappoint. Any notions of pure adrenaline fighting are wrong, as the film is a history drama, another Nationalist film that seems like it’s getting played out after such films as Red Cliff, the Ip Man films, and Jackie Chan’s upcoming 1908. The film is ambitious and solid, yet like many Oscar-nominated films often over-hyped, Bodyguards and Assassins is too.
Despite being placed on the DVD cover kicking a couple of dudes asses, Donnie Yen isn’t the star, and features a rare turn that involves something we never see from such a star: death. Sure that’s a spoiler, and I’m a little late to announcing that,...

After the crappy news that production of the remake of the 70s classic period martial arts actioner The Flying Guillotines (about a team of ruthless, crack assassins versed in the use of a weapon that can decapitate its victims instantly) had hit the buffers hard, our cup is once again half full, with word that the production is back on track - under new director Andrew Lau. What happened to the films original helmer Teddy Chan remains a bit of a mystery, but production is set to restart in August, so we can expect the movie to appear in early 2012! Synopsis: Arguably history’s first Swat team, this covert assassination squad of the emperor was composed of young street thugs who had been killing for food and survival since they were kids. Trained to use the Flying Guillotines, the deadliest weapon ever invented, they competed with one another to be the best killer.

The official reason given was script issues but speculation was rife that Chan and Chen...

With films like Jackie Chan's "Accidental Spy" and "Downtown Torpedoes," director Teddy Chen proved himself a worthy addition to the Hong Kong cinema pantheon. Now he's back with "Bodyguards and Assassins," and we've got the first look at the trailer for this explosive flick that hits DVD on July 26.
"Bodyguards and Assassins" is loosely tied to historical events with a story that brings together a series of individuals who try to protect Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a real-life figure who overthrew the imperial Qing Dynasty to create Republican China. Along the way a group of assassins is dispatched to take them down, including one galloping away on a horse (it's better seen, so watch it above).

Crucify me if you must, but a remake of the 70′s kung fu classic “The Flying Guillotines” by “Bodyguards and Assassins” director Teddy Chen sounds like a good idea to me.
