Film Review: The Deadly Broken Sword (1979) by Sun Chung
Image
Sun Chung, Ti Lung and Fu Sheng are back in another wuxia adventure after their highly successful collaboration in “Avenging Eagle” just a year ago, this time written by the prolific novelist and screenwriter Ni Kuang. The Chinese title, loosely translated as “Romantic Broken Sword, Little Dagger” actually refers to both the lead characters and their signature weapons.

Proud, arrogant Tuan Chang Qing (Ti Lung) is a legendary swordsman who kills his opponents with a special sword technique as well as provides coffins for them before their duels. He purposely breaks the tip of his sword, about an inch, and buries it in their bodies like souvenirs and by killing them that way, he has earned the nickname “Deadly Broken Sword”. The movie opens with Tuan and Lian San (Michael Chan Wai Man) in a ferocious duel in which Lian,...

Film Review: Iron Protector (2016) by Yue Song
Image
Skillfully trained in multi types of martial arts like Jiu-jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Sanda, kickboxing and Mma, Mainland Chinese actor, screenwriter, director and fight choreographer Yue Song is back after his sting in the lukewarm “The King of the Streets” (2012), China’s first street-fighting film.

on Hi-Yah!

The thin plot of “The Bodyguard”, also known as “Super Bodyguard” or “Iron Protector”, concerns a disciple of the Iron Feet clan, Wu Lin, played by Yue Song. After the death of his master, Wu wanders into the modern city of Lengcheng (Cold City) looking for his martial arts brother Li Jiang (Shi Yan Neng). White doing a split in the city square, like Stephen Chow did in “Shaolin Soccer” (2001), a bunch of gangsters was chasing after a rich businessman run pass and interrupted his busking. Regardless, Wu effortlessly fights off the attackers and saves the man’s life.

Looking back at Jackie Chan’s Project A movies
Craig Lines Aug 2, 2017

The martial arts master Jackie Chan made some amazing movies. We take a look back at the superb Project A series...

It’s a mystery to me why Jackie Chan appears in so few Greatest Director Of All-Time lists. I mean, sure, he’s a household name and any martial arts enthusiast, no matter how deep or casual, will be quick to let you know how good he is at fighting. Yet, outside the genre fandom, he rarely seems to get the respect he deserves as a filmmaker. Perhaps the problem is that two of the most critically dismissed or maligned genres in film are action and comedy, which also happen to be the two things Jackie Chan does best.

Chang Cheh’s “Five Element Ninjas” is one of the most impressive (and cult) martial arts films of all time
This was Chang Cheh’s first film not featuring the “Venom Mob,” but he substituted them with gusto, by presenting ninjas, the animosity between China and Japan, and Cheng Tien Chi.

Chief Hong, leader of a martial arts school, once more challenges his archrival, Yuan Zeng, to a tournament between the two schools, for the title of martial arts master. Hong’s school has been losing for quite some time, and this time is not an exception. However, when all his students are defeated, he calls in a samurai from Japan to fight for his school. The samurai wins against his opponent and forces him to commit suicide, only to face the same fate in his next duel. Before he dies though, he asks Chief Hong to contact an allied ninja clan. Furthermore, as he warns Yaun Zeng that his and his students’ end is near, he manages to poison him.

Clement Cheng: The 'Gallants' Interview (Part 1)
"Gallants", which opens in Hong Kong today and China tomorrow, is probably the most enjoyable kung-fu comedy made in Hong Kong since "Shaolin Soccer". First movie produced by actor Gordon Lam Ka-tung ("Infernal Affairs", "Election", "Vengeance") for Focus Films Limited (a film production, investment, acquisition, and distribution company founded in 2002 by superstar Andy Lau), "Gallants" stars veteran actors from the 70's such as Chen Kuan-tai ("Boxer From Shangtung"), Michael Chai Wai-man  ("The Club"), Bruce Leung ("Kung-fu Hustle"), Teddy Robin Kwan ("Mad Mission"), Susan Shaw ("Big Bad Sis") and Lo Meng ("5 Deadly Venoms").

It also stars younger talents like  Wong Yau-Nam ("Just One Look", "Ip Man"), Jj Jia ("Isabella") and the rapper Mc Jin. Third movie directed by Derek Kwok after "The Pye-Dog" and "The Moss", "Gallants" is also the first movie that he co-directed with his long-time friend Clement Cheng, who makes his director debut with "Gallants". Enjoy the first...
