“Sooni Taraporewala’s Waack Girls Is Much More Than A Dance Chance” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Admittedly, I knew nothing about Waack dancing before the stellar Sooni Taraporewala’s engrossing series on Amazon. The nine episodes, crisply edited with reams of ravishing repartees , simply jump at us with their verve and vivacity.

Although Ms Taraporewala follows the underdog’s movie manuel to a T, there is something immensely dewy and inviting as the young ladies, all incipient maestros on the dance floor, combine their passion for dance with a gritty survival instinct.

And the majestic crumbling relics of Kolkata! Ooof! The City Of Dreams has never looked dreamier. Cinematographer Igor Kropotov stalks the streets and crumbling havelis of Kolkata with the reverent eagerness of a tourist who has decided to stay back. This is Kolkata like never before.

The series opens with the camera cruising curiously through a crumbling haveli as we hear the sounds of Donna Summer’s stupendous track ‘MacArthur Park’ in the distance:...

Movie Review | Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway: A slack legal drama
Image
Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is a family legal drama film directed by Ashima Chibber. The film is the true story of an Indian couple, an adaptation based on Sagarika Chakraborty’s autobiography titled ‘The Journey of a Mother’; whose children were taken away from them by the Norwegian Childcare system (Barnevernet) in 2011.

Adaptation

The story is based on real life case with Sagarika Bhattacharya who was living with her husband Anup Bhattacharya with two children. They moved to Norway for a job. In 2011, their children were taken away by Barnevernet (also known as Norwegian Child Welfare Services) on ground of improper treatment of children. First, they appealed in a Norwegian court but failed. Later they appealed Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India to intervene. Before this Sagarika got separated from her husband and custody of the children were given to their father’s brother. In 2013, after she fought a two year long legal battle,...

“Rani Mukerji Is A Force Of Nature In Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway

Directed by Ashima Chibber

Why wait for the end of the year? Just give all the awards to Rani Mukerji for her sinewy performance as a hyper Bengali mother battling the government of Norway for the right to her own children.

There! I said it. Sounds so ridiculous: a mother being deprived for the right to her own children. But it all happened , and not so long ago when Sagarika Bhattacharya and her husband’s kids were taken away.

This is what happens when eager NRIs don’t read the fine print before migrating. Rani Mukerji, here rechristened Debika Chatterjee, fights tooth and nail to get back her children. Not much support from her stiff-lipped husband (Anirban Bhattacharya) . In the process of battling bureaucracy almost singlehandedly Debika encounters all sorts of conspiracies and schemers.

In fact, the two Norwegian women who barge into her home and...

He is currently filming The Thing prequel and soon to be seen in Sundance jury prize winner Animal Kingdom and Warrior, opposite the new Mad Max, Tom Hardy.

His next movie though is romantic drama The Waiting City, which is something rather different from the genre fare Edgerton is fast becoming associated with. The movie has its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and has since screened at festivals the world over.

Filmed in stunning locations in India, and directed by Claire McCarthy, The Waiting City also stars Radha Mitchell and Isabel Lucas, as well as a host of Indian actors such as Samrat Chakrabarti, Tillotama Shome and Barun Chanda.
