Nicolas Cage’s prolific year began with his performance in the action thriller “The Trust,” continued with a role in Oliver Stone’s “Snowden,” and starring roles in Paul Schrader’s “Dog Eat Dog” and Larry Charles’ “Army of One.” Now, he returns with yet another film this year, “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,” about the Portland-class cruiser that delivered parts of the atomic bomb used to end WWII. In case you missed it in American history class, the first trailer for USS Indianapolis: Men Of Courage should have filled you in on the real-life Portland-class cruiser’s grueling ordeal (to put it mildly) in 1945. The latest preview offers more backstory on the ship’s crew, so we can all feel even worse about their fate.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Indianapolis is sent to deliver parts for the first atomic bomb. Captain Charles McVay (Nicolas Cage) assures his superior officer (James Remar) that his crew can make the drop. They’re successful, but the Indianapolis crew is remembered as much for the ensuing tragedy as the completion of their mission. The Japanese navy’s attack on and subsequent sinking of the Indianapolis resulted in “the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy.”

Season three opens in the wake of the destruction of Charles Town, where the world lives in fear of Captain Flint. When his campaign of terror crosses over into madness, it falls to John Silver to locate the man within the monster. Meanwhile, with Eleanor Guthrie gone, Jack Rackham and Captain Charles Vane struggle to secure Nassau for the ages.

When Paul Walker died in 2013, his brother Cody Walker, now 27, helped Universal Pictures finish "Furious 7" as a stand-in for his older brother. (Their brother Caleb did the same.) Now, Deadline reports, Cody has landed the first major acting role of his own: as a Navy soldier in "USS Indianapolis," directed by Mario Van Peebles and starring Nicolas Cage as Captain Charles McVay in an adaptation of the true 1945 story of the men who were stranded and attacked by sharks for five days in the Philippine Sea.

So far the reaction to Cody's casting has been mixed. Some fans are thrilled for him and sure Paul would be proud and happy to see his brother launching his own acting career. Other fans -- including almost everyone in the comments section under Deadline's exclusive -- are crying nepotism, wondering what Cody did to earn a major film role besides look like...

Paul Walker's youngest brother Cody is boarding his first significant feature film role after lending a hand on Fast & Furious 7.

The 27-year-old helped Universal Pictures out in the recent Furious instalment, after the death of Paul in December 2013.

According to Deadline, Cody is starting his own acting career with a major supporting role in USS Indianapolis, alongside Nicolas Cage.

Cage plays Captain Charles McVay in the Mario Van Peebles-directed feature, who was commander of a boat that sank in 1945, resulting in massive loss of life.

Based on a true story, McVay's boat was hit by a torpedo that was on a secret mission, leaving 1,196 men waiting for rescue for four days. Only 317 survived after sharks began eating those who managed to get off-board.

Cody is set to play one of the soldiers fighting for survival.

The newcomer signed up with Paradigm Talent Agency back in April.

Starz is about to launch a new swashbuckling, high-seas adventure in "Black Sails," a sort-of prequel to "Treasure Island" that sees literary characters Long John Silver and Captain Flint plus real-life pirates Captain Charles Vane, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack Rackham living and working (as it were) in and around Nassau, Bahamas, which is overseen by proprietor Eleanor Guthrie.

Australian cinematographer Jules O'Loughlin Acs has begun shooting big-budget Us TV series Black Sails in Cape Town, South Africa.

The eight-episode pirate series is being produced by filmmaker Michael Bay's company, Platinum Dunes, and also stars Australian lead Luke Arnold, who will play pirate John Silver (McLeod's Daughters, Rush), as well as Toby Schmitz (Crownies), who will play the role of Rackham.

Who doesn’t like a good pirate adventure? Starz is a fan. The network has ordered episodes of Black Sails, to be delivered by Jon Steinberg and Michael Bay. Today we learned two new actors have been cast. They are Zach McGowan and Luke Arnold.

Black Sails bypassed those uncertain waters where a series is just a pilot and no one knows if it will be picked up or not. Starz immediately asked for eight episodes.

The show is set 20 years before the events depicted in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island, explained Deadline. The show’s lead character is Flint, a savvy pirate. Set twenty years before events in the book, the story chronicles the adventures of fabled buccaneer Captain Flint and his men. As already announced, Toby Stephens ("Jane Eyre," "Die Another Day") has been cast in the lead role as Captain Flint.

THR reports the film will focus on the tragedy from the point-of-view of Hunter Scott, an 11-year old boy who embarked on a journey to exonerate the Indianapolis’ court-martialed captain in 1996. Warner Bros. Pictures, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife/producing partner Susan Downey are teaming for a new film about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II says Heat Vision

The story centers on Hunter Scott, a young boy who caused a stir in 1996 when the research he did for a school history project caused a re-examination of the case of Captain Charles McVeigh. McVeigh had been unjustly court-martialed and blamed for the sinking of the ship and the loss of hundred sailors in the shark infested waters while they were adrift and awaiting rescue over five days.

Scott eventually testified before Congress and exonerated McVay who had committed suicide in 1968. Robert Schenkkan ("The Pacific," "The Quiet American") is penning the script for the currently untitled project which the Downey's will produce.

Universal tried to adapt Scott's story a few years ago with J.J. Abrams linked as potential director.

Warner Bros. is tackling a new drama project based on the 1945 sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and the 11-year-old boy who sought to exonerate the ship's captain, 50 years after it sunk.

The Navy court-martialed Charles McVay, although many who survived the ordeal did not blame the captain. Hunter Scott was instrumental in getting the Captain cleared of any wrongdoing, even testifying before Congress. The Navy eventually amended Charles McVay's records in 2001.
