‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’ Film Review: Zac Efron Captures Ted Bundy’s Killer Charm
Joe Berlinger
“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” the stridently descriptive and wordy title for Joe Berlinger’s narrative feature about Ted Bundy, could have been more conveniently used to refer to Lars von Trier’s “The House That Jack Built.” That ghastly picture from the Danish auteur revels in the grotesque and sadistic exploits of a serial murderer, as the monster intellectualizes his crimes and is outspoken about his desire to kill.

“Extremely Wicked” takes a completely opposite approach to engaging with the actions of its own hazardous charmer. Working from Michael Werwie’s Blacklist script, Berlinger — whose career in documentary has concentrated on the perpetrators and victims of heinous crimes — adamantly refrains from displaying explicit physical violence, opting instead to dwell on the efficacy of Bundy’s manipulation tactics. To that end, “Extremely Wicked” is less a play-by-play perusal of the killer’s methods and perversions, and more an examination...

Papillon review – prison-break remake is a long stretch
Charlie Hunnam is plausible but bland in this unnecessary account of Henri Charrière’s horrific incarceration on Devil’s Island and his daring escape

What a strange blast from the past, or parp from the past. One of the meaty bestseller sensations of the 70s, which became a Hollywood movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman – and co-written by no less a figure than Dalton Trumbo – has been effortfully revived. Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek now take the leads, playing the fearless prison escaper and his nerdy pal.

“Based on a true story” it says over the opening credits. Well, true-ish. These were the heavily embroidered reminiscences of French criminal Henri “Papillon” Charrière, nicknamed after his butterfly tattoo, who in 1931 was convicted in France of murdering a pimp – wrongly, he always maintained, a claim that has to be handled as carefully as everything else. He was sentenced to life at...

‘Papillon’ Review
Stars: Charlie Hunnam, Rami Malek, Tommy Flanagan, Eve Hewson, Roland Moller, Nina Senicar, Michael Socha | Written by Aaron Guzikowski | Directed by Michael Noer

Based on the international best-selling autobiography by Henri Charrière, Papillon follows the epic true story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in a notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek) who, in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape, ultimately resulting in a bond of lasting friendship.

Michael Noer has taken the highly unusual task of remaking the film in what is regarded as the last great dramatic role of American icon Steve McQueen, in the likes of Papillon. A somewhat forgotten film, certainly in terms of the larger talent and intoxicatingly immeasurable...

Steve McQueen in The Great Escape (1963)
‘Papillon’ Review: Despair Tough to Escape in Remake of Prison Epic
Steve McQueen in The Great Escape (1963)
Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman brought star power to this escape-from-Devil’s-Island epic back in 1973. Now Papillon has been remade with Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek in the roles of two prisoners who plan to bust out of their dehumanizing cage in colonial French Guiana. Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Malek (Mr. Robot) are not quite box-office names yet, but their acting chops are undeniable. And this true-life tale, based on the 1969 memoirs of Henri Charrière, still holds your attention. But Danish director Michael Noer, working from a script by Aaron Guzikowski,...

Rami Malek and Charlie Hunnam Plan Their Escape in First Trailer for ‘Papillon’ Remake
First premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, Papillon is now slated for a theatrical release later this summer, and the first trailer has arrived. A remake of the 1973 film of the same title (which itself was based on the autobiographical novel by the French writer Henri Charrière) Papillon depicts the real-life experience of Charrière, played by Charlie Hunnam (who recently gave a career-best performance in The Lost City of Z), as he teams up with unlikely partner Louis Dega, played by Rami Malek, in attempt to escape prison after being put there for a murder he didn’t commit.

Directed by Michael Noer (Northwest) and scripted by Aaron Guzikowski, the film boasts action-crime genre veterans at the helm. The trailer teases the expected abrasive action along with promising a strong duo between Hunnam and Malek, which will likely be elevated with Guzikowski’s intimate character work. These...

‘Papillon’ Trailer: Rami Malek and Charlie Hunnam Try to Escape History’s Most Infamous Prison Colony
Rami Malek
Before Rami Malek enters Oscar season with his upcoming performance as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” he’s starring opposite Charlie Hunnam in a new adaptation of “Papillon.” The movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, is based on Henri Charrière’s autobiographies “Papillon” and “Banco,” plus the famous 1973 film of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

“Papillon” stars Hunnam in the title role of Henri “Papillon” Charrière, who is sent to a penal colony on Devil’s Island after being framed for murder. Charrière forms an alliance with a convicted counterfeiter named Louis Dega (Malek), who agrees to finance the innocent man’s escape from the colony. Roland Møller, Tommy Flanagan, and Eve Hewson co-star.

Hunnam and Malek both rose to stardom as the stars of cable dramas “Sons of Anarchy” and “Mr. Robot,” respectively, the latter winning Malek a best actor Emmy trophy.

Tony Sokol Aug 4, 2016

Mr Robot star Rami Malek is the new addition to the cast for the remake of Papillon...

Mr Robot star Rami Malek is in talks to star with Charlie Hunnam for the upcoming Papillon remake.

The 1973 classic film Papillon starred Steve McQueen in the title role of Henri Charrière, a self-proclaimed innocent man who is sentenced to Devil’s Island in French Guiana for murder but cannot stay caged. He was joined by Dustin Hoffman as the quirky counterfeiter Louis Degas, the man who finances Papillon’s escape attempts. Here's the trailer for the original film...

Malek will take on the role of Degas, a very intelligent man who seems to be known in all the wrong places. There's no word yet on whether Malek will wear the signature prescription glasses that Hoffman fastened around his ears.

Papillon Remake Adds Rami Malek Opposite Charlie Hunnam
He may not be involved in FX’s planned Sons of Anarchy prequel series – barring a change of heart – or Pacific Rim 2 for that matter, but Charlie Hunnam has still lined up a collection of enticing projects.

Case in point: Papillon, Michael Noer’s full-blown remake of the 1973 prison break movie, where Hunnam will play the part of Henri “Papillon” Charriere. It appears the actor has now found his parter-in-crime, too, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming today that Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) has agreed terms to star opposite Hunnam as Louis Dega.

Forty years ago, those roles were filled by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, respectively, who form an unlikely friendship in a French Guiana work camp during the 1930s. Facing a life sentence behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, it is Henri “Papillon” Charriere (Hunnam) that anchors the story, hatching a plan to escape that involves...

Charlie Hunnam at an event for Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Exclusive: Charlie Hunnam stars in the re-telling of the 1973 classic.

Red Granite International’s Danny Dimbort and Christian Mercuri have begun sales here on Papillon starring Charlie Hunnam.

The film is styled as a contemporary and gritty re-telling of Franklin J. Schaffner’s 1973 classic that starred Steve McQueen as Henri Charrière, a petty criminal sent to the notorious Devil’s Island penal colony in French Guiana after he is unjustly convicted of murder.

Charrière befriends a counterfeiter who offers to fund his escape in return for protection.

Danish director Michael Noer is lining up to start production outside the Us this summer from a script by Aaron Guzikowski. CAA represents Us rights to the classic adventure story.

Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland, Ram Bergman and Roger Corbi produce, while Dimbort and Mercuri are among the executive producers with David Koplan, Yan-Fischer-Romanovsky, Joshua D. Mauer, Terrence Chang and Martin Hellstern.
