Syfy is delving into the world of fantasy with a new TV series based on the epic poem "Beowulf."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the logline for the new series is an "adaptation of the classic epic poem that further examines the hero's rise to power and his feud with the monster Grendel." Considering there's plenty of fodder already in the 3,000-line Old English tale, it's easy to see how Syfy expanding the world would allow a great TV series to unfold.

With shows like "Merlin" well received by fans, it's easy to see the space "Beowulf" could hold in the television landscape. This new series will be written by Matt Greenberg (best known for the films "1408" and "Reign of Fire") and producers Greenburg, Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik, Andrew Cosby and Paulo de Oliveira.

The classic poem follows a 5th century Scandinavian hero who agrees to help of the king whose hall has come under attack by a cave-dwelling Viking-slaying monster Grendel.

Beowulf mortally wounds Grendel, only later to engage in fierce battle with Grendel's mother. This series take is said to "further examine the hero’s rise to power and his feud with the monster Grendel"

Matt Greenberg ("1408," "Reign of Fire") will write the script, while Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik, Matt Greenberg, Andrew Cosby and Paulo de Oliveira will executive produce.

A television version of the epic poem "Beowulf" is on the way to Syfy, says a story today at The Hollywood Reporter . 1408 scribe Matt Greenberg is attached to write. Written by an anonymous poet sometime between the 8th and 11th centuries, "Beowulf" follows a Scandinavian hero whose adventures begin with the slaying of a feared monster, Grendel. "Beowulf" has been adapted several times for the big screen, notably as a 2007 motion-capture version directed by Robert Zemeckis. The new "Beowulf" series will be executive produced by Michael Chechik, Andrew Cosby, Paulo de Oliveria, Matt Greenberg and Brian Hamilton.

If you watched the British series "Primeval" (which we absolutely loved), then this news should be of interest: Building on its success with acquired series such as "Lost Girl" and "Continuum," Syfy will air the "Primeval" spinoff "Primeval: New World" beginning Saturday, June 8th.

The 13-episode "Primeval: New World" stars Niall Matter ("Eureka"), Sara Canning ("The Vampire Diaries"), and Danny Rahim ("Eastenders") as a team of animal experts and scientists investigating paranormal events while battling both prehistoric and futuristic creatures. Amanda Tapping, who starred in the Syfy series "Sanctuary" and is currently recurring on "Supernatural," directed several episodes.

Based on the original "Primeval" series from Impossible Pictures, the "Primeval: New World" creative team is led by executive producers Martin Wood ("Sanctuary," "Stargate: Atlantis") and Gillian Horvath ("Sanctuary," Highlander"). It looks like our summer is shaping up very nicely, thanks to some excellent scheduling by The Powers That Be. At least our weekends will be taken care of. True Blood will almost certainly return in its usual Sunday at 9/8c slot, so there’s Sunday sorted. We told you earlier today that Zero Hour will be airing Saturdays at 8/7c, which fits in perfectly with this latest scheduling announcement: Primeval: New World will be airing Saturdays at 9/8c, followed by Sinbad at 10/9c on Syfy.

We have been reading, longingly, about the upcoming Canadian spinoff of the UK dinosaurs-in-the-modern-world series Primeval entitled Primeval: New World. We thought it would be fun. Then when we heard Niall Matter (Zane on Eureka) had been cast, we got even more jealous of our northern neighbors. Then when we heard it would be promoted as “darker and scarier” than the original series from whence it sprung, it sounded right up our alley. But since it wasn’t literally up Our alley, we sat and stewed.

But that is all behind us now as we rejoice over today’s announcement that Syfy has picked up the series for the U.S. market. First we have a trailer for you to check out, so that you can be as excited as we are, before getting to the details of the press release:

"Gravity," whose cast includes Laura Harris, Christina Cox, Malik Yoba and Florentine Lahme, is set in the near future and revolves around eight astronauts from five countries who undertake a mysterious six-year mission through the solar system.

The FtvS-produced series, slated to air on ABC this summer, is a co-venture with Vancouver-based Omni Film Prods., whose Brian Hamilton and Michael Chechik also exec produce.
