Stephanie Hsu, Zosia Mamet's 'Laid' Canceled at Peacock
Image
Another day, another under-appreciated comedy gem gets tossed to the wayside by its streaming home. That's right, the Stephanie Hsu-starring (and executive-produced!) comedy series, Laid, has been canceled after a single season on Peacock. The show was a hit with critics (including our own Greg Archer) and fans who tuned in — gaining it a 93% on the Tomatometer, which seems a big low, all things considered. Unfortunately, praise was not enough to convince Peacock to give the series another season, which is a shame for anyone who watched the show.

The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes at a time when fewer and fewer comedy series are getting the green light. Laid followed Hsu's Ruby Yao as she —over the course of the series' 8 episodes — realized that all of her former lovers were dying in unusual ways, forcing her to confront her past (and subsequent sex partners) in order to move forward.

‘Laid’ Canceled After One Season at Peacock
Image
Peacock has canceled “Laid” after one season.

The series starred Stephanie Hsu as Ruby Yao, a woman who learns that her former sexual partners have begun dying off in the order in which she slept with them. With the help of her best friend and roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet), she works to figure out what’s causing the deaths and works to warn the ones who are still living.

Along with Hsu and Mamet, the cast included Zosia Mamet, Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez as series regulars, plus recurring and guest stars including Andre Hyland, Elizabeth Bowen, Olivia Holt, Ryan Pinkston, David Denman, Susan Berger, Kate Berlant, John Early, Ettore “Big E” Ewen, Chloe Fineman, Simu Liu, Finneas O’Connell and Alexandra Shipp.

In an interview with Variety, co-showrunner Nahnatchka Khan indicated that she’d begun planning ideas for a potential second season, as Season 1 concluded with a cliffhanger: the reappearance...

‘Laid’ Canceled At Peacock After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Peacock will not be moving forward with new installments of the freshman series Laid, sources reveal to Deadline.

Laid, starring and executive produced by Stephanie Hsu, premiered on December 19 with all 8 episodes available to stream. While Laid boasted a talented ensemble cast, a catchy title, and a must-stream playlist, the rom-com failed to make the Nielsen streaming rankings, nor did it generate as much buzz as other projects from co-showrunners, executive producers, and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. It is as yet unknown if the show will be shopped around.

The 8-episode series follows Ruby Yao (Hsu), a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward. Laid is a new twist on the rom-com where the answer to “why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?...

Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Laid season 1.Laid star Tommy Martinez discusses the dark romantic comedy’s explosive season finale. The Peacock show, led by Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu, follows Ruby's bizarre journey to break a curse that causes her former lovers to mysteriously die. Martinez plays Isaac, who hires Ruby to organize his parent's anniversary party. The two bond over a shared love of musical theater, as Ruby scrambles to lift the hex on her love life with help from her best friend Aj (Zosia Mamet).

In an interview with ScreenRant’s own Grant Hermanns, Martinez delves into a pivotal moment for Ruby where she decides between maintaining her "safe" arrangement with Richie—her invincible ex unaffected by the curse—or risking everything to pursue her love for Isaac. Following The Penguin, There's Another Spin-Off Of The Batman In Development
Image
With quite a bit of time to go before The Batman 2 hits theaters, Matt Reeves and Lauren LeFranc want to keep audiences invested in the world that debuted in the 2022 superhero pic.

To that end, LeFranc revealed to Entertainment Weekly that there's another television spin-off currently in development.

"There’s another television exploration we’re going to do,” producer Dylan Clark stated. “We’re looking at this entire world as it relates to who Batman is — the antagonists around them, all the crime that has to be navigated in the city — and trying to figure out where are the areas that are best to explore.”

This news comes after a Gotham police department procedural morphed into what became The Penguin, and a planned Arkham Asylum spin-off was ultimately canned.

On the latter, Reeves and LeFranc revealed that HBO execs want them to lean more heavily on Batman's marquee characters,...

Matt Reeves Has Revealed What The Batman Cinematic Universe Is Called
Image
If you wanted final confirmation that Matt Reeves' The Batman would be existing outside of James Gunn's DC Universe (Dcu), you finally have it.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves revealed that he and his producing partner Dylan Clark refer to their Batman universe as the 'Batman Epic Crime Saga.'

The universe began with Robert Pattinson's 2022, underrated superhero origin tale and will continue with HBO's The Penguin, which will hit HBO in September.

Reeves was also developing an Arkham television spin-off that surprisingly was revealed to be set within Gunn's Dcu before the project was ultimately canceled.

"As we were writing the movie [The Batman], I was like, 'Hey, you know what? I think there are some cool shows that we could do," Reeves told EW. "It was actually why I wanted to make our deal at Warner Bros."

According to Reeves, HBO execs told...

‘The Penguin’ and ‘Dune: Prophecy’ Will Be Branded HBO (Instead of Max) Originals After All, After Some Crafty Dealmaking
Image
When Variety broke the news last month that HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys had changed the delineation between what an “HBO show” and a “Max show” is, there was an asterisk attached. Max’s big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects like the “Harry Potter” TV show, the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry” and the Green Lantern adaptation “Lanterns” — were moving to under the HBO umbrella, but those coming before 2025 would not.

Here was the rub, much to Bloys’ chagrin: The two shows premiering this fall that had inspired Bloys to change his tune, “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy,” couldn’t contractually make the switch. The shows had already been sold to international outlets as Max Originals, and those kinds of complicated deals are hard to unwind and revise.

“ ‘The Penguin’ would be an obvious fit as an HBO Original. Unfortunately, the process of licensing it internationally has already started,...

The Lost Epilogue Answers (Some Of) Your Finale Questions
Image
This article contains spoilers for the Lost finale and the epilogue “The New Man In Charge.”

Perhaps you may have heard, but the Lost finale was a touch controversial. As one of the biggest network TV dramas of all time and one of pop culture’s great “mystery box” stories, this ABC series had a lot of questions to answer in its final season.

Some would argue that Lost did a mostly fine job of resolving its many mysteries. In fact, that’s the official position taken here at Den of Geek. Many others, however, have found the finale’s focus on emotional catharsis over logical resolutions to be unsatisfying. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, something that the latter crowd sometimes misses in their interpretation of the Lost finale is that “The End” isn’t really the end. That’s right: there’s an epilogue to the Lost...

Rumor: Mark Strong Joins DC’s ‘The Penguin’ Series in a Villainous Role? Who Could He Be Playing?
Image
When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin. The series, which will be titled The Penguin, is set to be released later this year and we have just today received some interesting casting rumors!

Namely, we know that Farrell is reprising his role and that the series will focus on Penguin taking over Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film) at the hands of the Riddler.

The series will obviously focus on Penguin’s clash with what remains of the Falcone family,...

Gotham’s Underworld Rises: The Penguin Trailer Unleashes A New Chapter In The Batman Universe
Image
The Penguin trailer offers a glimpse into the forthcoming installment of The Batman saga ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

The latest trailer for The Penguin sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, alias Penguin. The trailer delves into the DC villain’s contemplation of the posthumous recognition bestowed upon a local gangster by the community during his upbringing, prompting Cobblepot to ponder the significance of such acknowledgement. “Can you imagine being remembered like that?” Cobblepot queries an off-screen character. The trailer doesn’t spill much about the story, but it does give us quick peeks at Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.

Announced in September 2021, “The Penguin” continues the saga of Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot shortly after the events depicted in “The Batman 2023,” as he manoeuvres to assert his authority within Gotham’s criminal hierarchy. The production of the eight-episode limited series commenced in...

‘The Penguin’ Trailer: Colin Farrell Seeks Revenge in ‘Batman’ Spinoff Series
Image
The bat is nowhere to be seen in the latest trailer for “The Penguin,” but that doesn’t mean that Gotham City crime is running rampant…yet.

Max’s “Batman” spinoff “The Penguin” is produced by “The Batman” writer/director Matt Reeves, with Dylan Clark executive producing. Colin Farrell reprises his role of corrupt nightclub owner Oz Cobb from Reeves’ 2022 feature starring Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero.

Following the events of the film which saw most of Oswald’s gang members either killed or incarcerated, Oswald is climbing the ranks in underground organized crime. The cast is rounded out by Cristin Milioti, who portrays Sofia, daughter of John Turturro’s mafia boss Carmine Falcone, and Theo Rossi, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. ‘The Penguin’ Trailer: Colin Farrell’s ‘Batman’ Villain Is Back as Gotham’s Biggest Gangster
Image
Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.

“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.

“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

Colin Farrell’s ‘The Penguin’ Max Series to Restart Production After Thanksgiving
Image
“The Penguin” is heading back into production.

The Max-dc series, which stars Colin Farrell in a spinoff of the film “The Batman,” is set to return to shooting now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has been settled. Production on the series will resume the week after Thanksgiving, Variety has learned. It originally began in March 2023 but was suspended in June during the writers’ strike and subsequent actors’ strike in Hollywood.

This week, an elderly Korean American shopkeeper (François Chau) and his activist daughter (Jee Young Han) come to the medical center after he’s beaten in an anti-Asian hate crime. When the two have different opinions on how to deal with the attack, Park uses his experience as the son of immigrants to connect with the young woman and bridge the gap. For Korean American Lee, whose parents owned stores when he was growing up, conversations about that hardworking generation were particularly touching. “Sometimes, because their English is limited, they become faceless,” he says. “I love that this episode goes into what’s in their heart and shows them as human beings.” An upcoming hour involving a young patient is also personal to Lee, whose son was...
