Peg O’ My Heart Review: Strong Acting Can’t Save a Clumsy Script
Image
Peg O’ My Heart wastes no time pulling you into its psychological fever dream. The film opens on a version of Hong Kong choking on the fumes of the 2008 financial crash, a landscape of urban decay that mirrors the inner turmoil of its inhabitants.

This is a city presented not as a bustling metropolis, but as a fertile ground for anxiety and guilt. We are introduced to our guide through this world, Dr. Man, a young psychiatrist whose intense, boundary-breaking methods are born from a conviction that one must treat the source of a trauma, not just its symptoms.

His methods, however, are about to be tested. He encounters Choi, a taxi driver whose life is disintegrating. Choi is plagued by a sleep disorder that has erased the line between his waking hours and his terrifying nightmares, making him a danger to himself and those around him.

The film establishes...

Peg o’ My Heart review – Hong Kong’s disordered dream life is focus of Lynchian thriller
Nick Cheung in That Demon Within (2014)
Set in the aftermath of the 2008 crash, Nick Cheung’s film follows a loose-cannon psychiatrist through a city deranged by stock-market storms

An immolated teenager flailing in a run down tenement. A doubledecker bus suspended above a calm sea bay. A dishevelled middle-aged couple frolicking down a high street, caught in their own private musical. There’s an irrepressible fountain of dream imagery erupting out of Nick Cheung’s fourth feature, which imagines Hong Kong after the 2008 financial crash as a nightmarish inland empire awash in outrage, anguish and guilt. “Other people’s money!” crows one investor – but the real business here is other people’s dreams.

Loose-cannon psychiatrist Dr Man (Terrance Lau) is under censure from his bosses for investigating his patients’ private lives. Maybe it’s his own uneasy dreams that motivate him to trespass, though a new bizarre case gives him added cause to go the extra mile.

Nick Cheung and Ethan Juan in Go for Broke (2024)
Film Review: Go for Broke (2024) by Marc Ma
Nick Cheung and Ethan Juan in Go for Broke (2024)
While the films we see from Mainland China in festivals mostly follow arthouse social/family drama paths, the ones we see outside of the circuit, mostly in various streamers and occasionally in distribution, are almost always of the crime/action variety and quite frequently, of dubious quality. “Go For Broke”, a Chinese/Hong Kong production by Marc Ma, checks both these last two boxes.

Film Review: Line Walker (2016) by Jazz Boon
Image
Essentially a mixture of Johnnie To's cinematic style (and casting) and the story of “Infernal Affairs” plus somewhat of John Woo's heroic bloodshed, “Line Walker” aims, though, mostly at entertainment. The film is based on the homonymous 2014 TV series, and later on spawned a sequel.

“Line Walker” is available from Echelon Studios

However, this also means that a number of them continue to work unbeknownst to the body of the Force. Film Review: Bursting Point (2023) by Dante Lam and Calvin Tong
Image
Before heading off to mainland China to direct those patriotic but commercially successful films like “Operation Mekong” (2016), “Operation Red Sea” (2018), “The Battle of Changjin” (2021), Dante Lam's last Hong Kong film starring Nick Cheung was “The Demon Within” (2014). Now, back to his roots and home turf almost a decade later and this time co-directing with Calvin Tong, he delivers us the extremely violent Category III, adults only “Bursting Point”, again with Cheung in the lead.

Veteran chief inspector Bond Sir of the anti-narcotic branch is desperate to apprehend the boss of a local drug traffickers' gang Yang (Shaun Tam). Bond then plants a young cop Jiang Ming (William Chan) as a mole into their organization. After several unsuccessful confrontations with high casualties on both sides, the police manage to retain Yang's brother but he later dies in custody which further angers Yang. Furthermore, Ming seems to have blown his undercover...

Udine’s Japan selector, Mark Schilling compared the work to that of master director Ozu Yasujiro.

The prizes were handed out in the early hours of Friday after a marathon day of celebratory activity that started with Chinese director Zhang Yimou on hand for a screening of his “Raise the Red Lantern,” continued with a generous-spirited masterclass and in the evening continued with the handover of Zhang’s lifetime achievement award. ‘In Broad Daylight’ Care Home Expose Leads Hong Kong Film Awards Nominations
Image
“In Broad Daylight,” an expose of real events in a care home for the elderly, dominated the nominations for the Hong Kong Film Awards.

The Lawrence Kan-directed comedy-drama received 16 nominations, at the Tuesday nominations event, including best picture and best new director as well as others for cinematography, editing sound design and original song.

The story sees an investigative reporter go under cover to expose cruelty and other wrong-doings at the Rainbow Bridge Care Home. It premiered last year at the Shanghai film festival and was a highlight of the New York Asian Film Festival, but came away empty-handed from the Golden Horse Film Awards, where it had been nominated in five categories. It enjoyed its commercial release in Hong Kong in November.

Other contenders in the Hkfa best film category are: Nick Cheung’s “Time Still Turns the Pages,” Soi Cheang’s “Mad Fate,” Felix Chong’s “The Goldfinger...

Film Review: The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell (2023) by Herman Yau
Benny Chan
The late Benny Chan directed “The White Storm” back in 2013 starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung. In “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords” (2019) which starred Andy Lau and Louis Koo, Herman Yau took over as director. Now in 2023, Yau is back in this in-title-only third installment again featuring Koo, Lau Ching Wan and Aaran Kwok, the newcomer to the series. All these actors play different characters altogether but the themes of war against drugs, royalty and brotherhood are still there but told in a new storyline.

Film Review: Connected (2008) by Benny Chan
Image
When it comes to big-budget productions made in Hong Kong, few could hold a candle to director Benny Chan whose resume includes such titles like “Rob-b-Hood”, “New Police Story” and “Raging Fire”, his last work before his death. As he was approached to do a remake of David R. Ellis' action-thriller “Cellular”, Chan did not have to think twice about the proposition since it gave him the chance to put the original premise within the Hong Kong culture, and therefore making his version much more than a mere copy as you might assume as first glance. “Connected”, which is currently streaming on Netflix, includes the ingredients typical for the kind of action thriller Chan is known for, as well as some impressive stunt work and great performances, especially leading man Louis Koo playing an unlikely hero.

Film Review: Treasure Inn (2011) by Wong Jing
Image
During the early nineties in Hong Kong, the prolific screenwriter, producer, director and sometime actor Wong Jing made quite a number of crowd-pleasing action comedies which was a highly popular genre back then. Although wacky and action packed in nature, his films like “Tricky Brains”, “Royal Tramp”, “Legend of the Liquid Sword”, “Flying Dagger”, “Holy Weapon” and so on were commercially successful productions. Fast forward to 2011 and with a bigger Mainland budget, plus the help of two award-winning actors, Wong ws back and doing pretty much the same old thing. Set in White Horse Town, ancient China, “Treasure Inn” revolves around young Master Kung (Nicholas Tse) and Lo Pa (Nick Cheung), two lowly and underappreciated constables who work in the courthouse kitchen and laundry instead of doing proper investigating duties.

Film Review: Warriors of Future (2022) Ng Yuen Fai
Image
Hong Kong actor Louis Koo loves science fiction and collects “Stars War” merchandise so it is no surprise that he would produce a sci-fi film financed by his own company “One Cool Film Production”. Although it would take him a few years to finish his expensive personal project, it eventually paid off big time to the tune of over HK80 Million and became the highest grossing domestic film at the local box office. Furthermore it went worldwide due to it being streamed on Netflix.

Visual effect artist Ng Yuen Fai’s directional debut takes the viewers to the year 2055 in which the world is in pretty bad shape because of climate change and wars, and the polluted atmosphere is barely livable. Moreover, domes known as “Skynets” now cover the cities so their inhabitants can breathe and survive. One day, a meteor crashes into B-16, a district of futuristic Hong Kong...

‘Warriors of Future’ – Sci-Fi Movie on Netflix – Review: Amusing and Action Packed
Image
Warriors of Future is a sci-fi action movie directed by Yuen Fai Ng, starring Louis Koo, Carina Lau, Lau Ching-Wan and Nick Cheung.

‘The Transformers’ fans, this movie is for you.

Premise Warriors of Future (2022)

The year is 2055, when a meteor carrying a destructive plant strikes the world, a suicide squad is given hours to save their post-apocalyptic city from total collapse. There is a catch-22 though, the military has been relying on robots.

Warriors of Future (2022) Movie Review

A rather entertaining movie, with acceptable special effects, and a script that does not lack humor.

Its director, Yuen Fai Ng, with his creative background in the special effects world, knows how to make good use of his know-how.

Do not expect profundity in the characterizations, as this is pure action. The acting and the script are not particularly convincing, but it is nevertheless an amusing number.

Explosive Trailer for Epic Hong Kong Sci-Fi Action 'Warriors of Future'
Image
"This is an unprecedented operation." Whoa!! There's a Hong Kong sci-fi action movie called Warriors of Future that has finally opened in theaters in China and Hong Kong this summer. It was being prepped for release in 2019, with an early trailer dropping years ago. But after all the pandemic delays and lockdowns, it's only being released now. Set in the year 2055, a meteorite brings an extraterrestrial to the Earth in the form of an alien vine that "purifies the planet but kills everything in its path." (Is this anti-climate change propaganda?) When powerful alien creatures threaten humanity, Cmmdr. Sing Lee's elite forces are almost wiped out, and the surviving soldier Tai Loi discovers an even bigger conspiracy. Starring Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Carina Lau, Philip Keung, Tse Kwan-ho, and Nick Cheung. This looks Extra epic, from a VFX supervisor making his directorial debut. It's even being marketed as the...

Film Review: Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) by Stanley Tong
Image
Four years after the second installment to arguably Jackie Chan’ most popular franchise, the actor would reprise his role as police inspector Chan Ka-Kui in “Police Story 3: Supercop” (or just “Supercop” in some areas). Perhaps due to his busy schedule in front and behind the camera, working on other projects such as the equally successful “Armour of God”-films, Stanley Tong took over directing duties from Chan, who would still be a producer for the project. This collaboration turned out to be quite fruitful for both them, setting the foundation for features such as “Rumble in the Bronx”, which would give the actor the breakthrough with US-American markets after years of trying. Although the previous entries into the franchise had already set quite a high level when it came to action set pieces, “Supercop” would see Chan in the middle of some of the most ambitious and costly action scenes of his career,...

Film Review: Ip Man 3 (2015) by Wilson Yip
Image
Despite the changes in some key roles in the film, with Yuen Woo-ping taking the place of Sammo Hung as action choreographer, Max Zhang the place of the local rival, and Mike Tyson that of the foreign rival, “Ip Man 3” essentially repeats the recipe of the previous film almost to the letter, with one exception, of adding more drama.

Eventually, however, another man appears, Tin-chi, whose Wing Chun also comes from the same roots as Ip Man. The two get to know each other through their sons, who are caught fighting in the school yard in an effort to show whose Wing Chun is the best. Tin-chi, who is a single father, tries to make a...

Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons in The Mission (1986)
Hong Kong Director Johnnie To Retrospective to Kick Off at The Prince Charles Cinema in London
Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons in The Mission (1986)
‘The Heroic Mission’ is named and inspired by two titles of To’s films during the 90s: The Heroic Trio (1992) and The Mission (1998). The imagery of ‘hero’ created by To in most of his films represents a fated statement: ‘We all came with a mission’. Influenced by the film directors King Hu, Sam Peckinpah and Akira Kurosawa, To enjoyed his international breakthrough with a film noir signature and gangster films. To specialises in angling at different characters in daily life and portraying their inner struggles and conflicts between desire and making choices. To once said, ‘I can see two to three faces of a person.’ Three films have been selected in this programme and each tells a different story about heroism.

Presented jointly by UK-China Film Collab and Trinity CineAsia, this programme provides a wider context of the societal changes in Hong Kong in recent decades. It wishes to...
