After decades of false starts, fan-fuelled nostalgia, and more merchandise than movie updates, Killer Klowns from Outer Space may finally be gearing up for a return, this time with Ryan Gosling reportedly involved as producer for a high-profile reboot at Amazon MGM Studios.

The surprise report, broken by insider Jeff Sneider, suggests that Gosling is backing a remake of the 1988 cult classic horror-comedy that saw extraterrestrial clowns descend from the cosmos in a giant circus tent spaceship to wreak havoc on a sleepy American town. With popcorn guns, cotton candy cocoons, acid pies, and balloon-animal bloodshed, the original film delivered a blend of slapstick humour and outlandish horror that has only grown in popularity since its modest theatrical debut.

It’s hard to define what makes a movie good or bad since it’s all subjective, but for me, a bad movie becomes good when it’s still enjoyable despite being a terrible film.

H​onorable Mention: The Monster Squad (1987)

W​hile this film was a mainstay of my childhood, if you look at it today, some of the language hasn’t aged very well. I still love this film, as I can look past its flaws and remember the absolute glee I would get watching it over and over again.

As of this week, it’s officially been 20 years since the release of Team America: World Police, the puppet action movie made by famed restaurateurs Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Sure, it’s not perfect, but at least Team America gave us one of the greatest sex scenes in movie history, and one of the greatest outraged Sean Penn letters in “Sean Penn being outraged” history.

At the time, a lot of fans were expecting Team America to be a blistering takedown of George W. Bush’s calamitous foreign policy, but instead they got a movie that was more focused on satirizing Jerry Bruckheimer-produced blockbusters and lampooning self-involved celebrity political activism. As a result, there were a number of cameos from marionette versions of A-list Hollywood stars, including the aforementioned Penn, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin. But the breakout star of the film was, of course, Matt Damon.

Scream Factory has just released Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 4K to celebrate its 35th Anniversary, and what an exciting time to be a fan of the 1980s movie. With the recent surge of Klownapalooza happening in the past few years, including tons of merch made available by Spirit Halloween and the much-anticipated video game scheduled to be released next month, it seems apropos for the Klowns to finally make their 4K debut.

In 1988, the Chiodo Brothers took their seemingly ridiculous premise of having otherworldly monsters in the form of circus clowns land on Earth to wreak havoc on a quiet little town and produced it into a full-length motion picture. Inspired by creature features and B-movies alike, their unconventional film with a deliberately hokey title would garner an initially significant following that evolved into a major cult classic close to four decades later.

“Everyone knows who Jason is. Everyone can point out The Predator. And, of course, everyone’s familiar with the Ghostbusters!”

So says Jared Gerritzen, Chief Creative Officer at IllFonic, as we sit down for a quick interview with him on Discord. He’s certainly an authoritative voice on this matter too, given that he’s worked on adaptations for each of those cherished properties over the years, giving them all the asymmetrical multiplayer treatment that his development studio has got down to a fine art by now.

He continues: “And that means that people have pre-conceived notions of what those franchises should be. I guess what I’m saying is that they come with the burden of expectation, as you’ve got to [appease] fans of every individual movie or comic-book, regardless of their varying degrees of quality.”

Yet Gerritzen seems less wary of any such purism when it comes to IllFonic’s latest release.

So with Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game, you’ve got the Chiodo Bros. involved, you’ve got the classic Dickies song, and you’ve got the classic Klown mannerisms with the gameplay. So what more do you want? How about female Klowns?

With IllFonic’s panel at Pax East yesterday, Stephen Chiodo accidentally let loose news that female Klowns will be coming to the game (which X user Nyzechu caught on film). “That wasn’t on my list of things not to say,” Stephen joked before Edward Chiodo told attendees to refrain from telling anyone. “I think I’m gonna be cocooned,” said Stephen.

“You know what? You’ve gotta let the little things out of the bag. It’s not gonna ruin anything,” Charles Chiodo quipped. The panel did go on to say that they do have more klowns and more content for the game that they haven’t talked about.

You’d think it would be a given that any new project that serves as a follow-up to the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here) would need to feature two very important elements: the klowns and the famous theme song by The Dickies… but the upcoming Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game is missing one of those elements, as The Dickies have confirmed that their theme song is not being used for the game.

Scream Factory has announced today that they’ve upgraded Killer Klowns from Outer Space to the 4K Ultra HD format, with a 4K SteelBook release also coming soon.

While we wait for the video game later this year, Toynk.com has unleashed their brand new line of Horror Plushies from the 1988 horror film Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

The 1988 science fiction horror film by the Chiodo Brothers follows along as extraterrestrials clowns looking for sustenance come to Earth to terrorize the idyllic town of Crystal Cove. The officially licensed Toynk Exclusive line of plush features Rudy, Shorty, Jumbo, Baby Klown, and the Candy Cocoon.

“Getting the Killer Klowns from Outer Space license is super exciting! The Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game is going to be released for PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One sometime this year, and while we still don’t have a specific release date for this one, we do have an update to share: the game’s developers have revealed the five different classes of Killer Klowns that gamers will be able to play as! Netflix has scored 50 Annie Award nominations across series and features, including bids for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” which leads in individual nominations with nine.

“Pinocchio,” which has picked up 38 awards so far this season, including the Golden Globe for animated feature, is one of three Netflix projects up for best feature, along with “The Sea Beast” and “Wendell & Wild.” Netflix has one contender in the indie feature field: “My Father’s Dragon,” with Cartoon Saloon.

The good folks at Good Shepherd Entertainment have posted a new blog entry over at the official site for Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, once again focusing on The Chiodo Brothers. This time the trio gives new fans a rundown on some of the ideas that they generated while writing Killer Klowns.

As the blog post states, the Chiodo Brothers have for the past 40 years applied their special chemistry and talent to bring fantastic characters to life. “We can’t define what the Chiodo Brothers mix is,” explains Edward Chiodo. “That balance of horror comedy and sci-fi.
