Film Review: Dr Wai on the Scripture with No Words (1998) by Ching Siu-tung
Image
Do you ever remember the old conduct of your adventure books that used to be so popular? You know, the ones where you select an option and have to go-to another page to continue the story. Watching “Dr Wai” brings back those memories given the wrap around narrative. Throw in a blatant nod to Indiana Jones and there is a lot of nostalgia at play. Continuing with the reviews of Eureka Entertainment's release of the “Heroes and Villains” Jet Li box set, it's time to dig out the explorer's hat, select follow-this-adventure and see if this feature is a lost treasure or deserves to be lost in the midst of time.

Lady Reporter Blu-ray Review – Eureka
Image
The Film

Cynthia Rothrock made her film debut in Yes Madam, subsequently going on to great success in supporting roles in the likes of Righting Wrongs and Millionaires Express. Lady Reporter (also known by the much cooler title The Blonde Fury) though would be her first true vehicle. It was conceived for her and directed largely by her Yes Madam colleague (and sometime partner) Mang Hoi. It’s a ground-breaking film in one major way: it was the first, and to date remains the only, time that a non-Asian actress was top billed in a Hong Kong martial arts film.

The film finds Rothrock playing Cindy, and FBI agent recruited to go undercover at a Hong Kong newspaper which the Feds think is being used as cover for a counterfeit money operation. As you might expect, kicking ensues.

The plot isn’t particularly complicated, but it doesn’t always connect perfectly from scene to scene.

How A Jet Li Movie Flipped An Iconic Bruce Lee Moment
Image
Jet Li's 1994 movie Fist of Legend flipps the iconic ending of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury in a big way. In Fist of Fury, Bruce Lee plays Chen Zhen, who returns to China's Jing Wu Men martial arts academy to learn that his sifu Huo Yuanjia has died. Suspecting foul play, Chen Zhen comes to learn that he was poisoned by a spy on behalf of the Japanese occupation of China, and sets about seeking revenge.

Fist of Fury is regarded not only as one of the best Bruce Lee movies, but a timelss martial arts classic, and its remake Fist of Legend is equally revered as a classic itself. Fist of Legend follows the same general story of Chen Zhen's mission of vengeance and the culture war of Japan's occupation of China, including iconic moments like Chen Zhen taking on an entire Japanese dojo single-handedly. However, Fist of Legend...

Film Review: High Risk (1995) by Wong Jing
Image
After working together in the live-action version of “City Hunter”, Jackie Chan and Wong Jing had a falling out in which Chan went on to disown the film as well as attack Wong through the press. In return Wong, had a go at Chan through this action comedy starring Jacky Cheung as a fraud who is a cowardly womanizing action star dressed in a yellow jumpsuit. In addition, he also had a field day spoofing just about most if not all of the Hollywood’s action films imaginable.

on Amazon

The film kicks off with a bunch of school kids trapped inside a bus with a time bomb ticking away, while Kit Li (Jet Li) is trying desperately to disarm it. Although he manages to cut the right wire, the bomb still goes off a few seconds later killing all the kids including his wife and son.

Film Review: Fist of Legend (1994) by Gordon Chan
Image
Making a remake of a beloved classic is always risky business, no matter what genre we are talking about, but in the case of a Bruce-Lee-movie, there is always the obstacle of the leading actor having to compete with the martial-arts legend. Consequently, Jet Li, despite his status within the Chinese film industry and impressive filmography at that point, was hesitant when he was approached to star in a new version of “Fist of Fury”, a feature which cemented the reputation of Lee as one of the major forces within the genre. In an interview with Hong Kong Cinemagic director Gordon Chan explains that, even though he knew about the risks, he always felt the script was something of a weakness of the original, painting a “black-and-white” image of the conflict between Japanese and Chinese. In the end, “Fist of Legend” does a lot more than re-tell the familiar story...

Film Review: Pedicab Driver (1989) by Sammo Hung
Image
As modern action cinema becomes ever more beautified, it’s incredible to look back at who became stars and wonder if they would ever get the opportunity today. Sammo Hung is one in particular as he doesn’t “look” like a star but has the presence and talent that befits one of the legendary figures of the industry. If you wanted an example, just watch this feature as it remains one of the masterworks that probably doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.

Lo Tung (Sammo Hung) is a pedicab driver in 1930’s Macau. The pedicab drivers and coolies are frequently at odds over picking up customers and a peace-making meeting accidentally degenerates into a brawl. Malted Candy (Max Mok) collects Hsaio Tsui (Fennie Yuen) as a fare and they are instantly attracted to each other. Unbeknownst to Malted Candy, it transpires that...

Film Review: Eastern Condors (1987) by Sammo Hung
Image
Even Bruce Lee once acknowledged the elephant in the room regarding modern day martial arts action. The problem being a bad guy could simply just use a gun. So often this dilemma would simply be ignored by filmmakers, which on occasion would make characters look a bit ridiculous. This paradox would be faced head on by Sammo Hung in what was a rarity for the local industry: a war movie.

Hong Kong cinema doesn’t have a large history in this genre if you discount the period epics. Whilst some may have had a conflict as a back drop, Chang Cheh‘s “Seven Man Army” and John Woo‘s troubled production “Heroes Shed No Tears” are the only two actual war pictures that spring to mind during that era. The 1997 handover has resulted in more gung ho Chinese productions but prior, a full on war movie was a rarity.

Chow Yun-Fat and Andy Lau in God of Gamblers (1989)
Film Review: The Gambling Ghost (1991) by Clifton Ko
Chow Yun-Fat and Andy Lau in God of Gamblers (1989)
The gambling movie is something that seems to have become a genre of its own over the years in Hong Kong. From the Hui Brothers’ “Games Gamblers Play” to the numerous spin offs of Jing Wang’s 1989 classix “God of Gamblers”, nothing better represents Hk society’s aspiration for wealth. Indeed, “The Gambling Ghost” hedges its own bets by featuring three Sammo Hungs!

Fatty (Sammo Hung) is a failing gambler working as a valet, whilst continuing to disappoint his more straight laced father (Sammo Hung). An encounter with a car thief (Nina Li Chi) finds Fatty losing his job and one of his friends (of whom is captured by gangsters). His grandfather (Sammo Hung!) returns as a ghost to help, promising to make him wealthy if he takes revenge for his murder. Hijinks and flying fists ensue as the wayward Fatty finds himself unable to avoid a final confrontation.

Sammo Hung: The Man, The Legend
Sammo Hung is regarded as one of the greatest Kung Fu performers of his generation. His high tempo, hard htting fight sequences have captured audiences all over the world. Future generations will look back and watch in amazement, witnessing one of the very best in world cinema.

Peking Opera Days

The Peking Opera school was run from a small theatre by Master Yu Jim Yuen, this was where Sammo Hung would begin his journey. In them days, the stundents would normally enroll for around 10 years, each day performing gruelling tasks for up to 18 hours a day which included training in the Martial Arts, weapons training, acrobatics, acting and singing. The Peking opera of course brought together Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo, who would eventually be known as the 7 Little Fortunes. They took the first name “Yuen” in a sign of...

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 4 (39-21)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you...

100 Essential Action Scenes: One on One Fights
Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.

A good fight scene is built into the fabric of an action film such that you can sense it coming like a storm on the horizon. It’s in the details of the opponents: the cracking of knuckles, the puffing of chests, the staredowns that say, “It’s about to go down.” A good fight scene makes you want to cover your eyes yet is impossible to look away from. You get tingly waiting for the violence to erupt, and if it’s done its job, you come away dizzy, invigorated, or even nauseated.

‘Robotrix’ DVD Review
Stars: Amy Yip, Chikako Aoyama, David Wu, Billy Chow, Ken Goodman, Wing-hin Ho | Written by Jamie Luk, Siu Man Sing | Directed by Jamie Luk

After watching Robotrix it’s not shock to me that this film was released in 1991, if anything could be described as the remnants of the creativity of movies like Robocop and The Terminator. There is no hiding the fact that the movie is softcore porn and could lovingly hug the word sexploitation, because this is a perfect example of it though surprisingly an example that actually works.

Robotrix is somewhat crazy in nature, and some would say that is a description of the acting, or lack of it. The story or lack of it revolves around a mad scientist who transfers his mind into a robot, then kidnaps the son of a foreign king. The robot then proceeds to make his way through the city murdering...

Triad Story (1990) Movie Review
Although Stephen Chow is obviously best known for his comedic genius and hits such as “Kung Fu Hustle” and “Shaolin Soccer”, as a young actor he paid his dues in a variety of genres. Inevitably, as with pretty much every other performer of his generation, this saw him making a number of appearances in that most enduring of 1990s trends, namely the Triad drama. The unimaginatively titled “Triad Story”, directed by Shum Wai, better known as a bit part actor who turned up in the likes of “Police Story 3”, was one such early role, which saw him star alongside an impressive cast of veterans including Ng Man Tat, Wu Ma, Shing Fui On and Billy Chow. The film begins in familiar style with Triad boss Feng (Ke Jun Hsung, another instantly recognisable face who featured in a number of Jackie Chan films including “The Canton Godfather” and “Island of...
