Game Of Thrones Injuries: Kit Harington’s Mishap Was Wild, But His Co-Star Fell Off A Cliff
Image
Kit Harington In Game Of Thrones (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Game of Thrones had plenty of onscreen stabs and cuts. However, turns out, some of the real bruises happened far from the battlefield. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, got caught in an odd off-screen horror when he wounded himself, not during a combat scene in Got, but while trying to get back into his own apartment. Meanwhile, his co-star Rory McCann, who played The Hound, had a far more terrifying close call years earlier. While both actors dealt with physical pain, one had production tweaks made for him, and the other just kept climbing. Both, though, carried their injuries into Westeros like pros.

Rory McCann’s Cliff Accident Was Way More Dangerous

Back when Game of Thrones was still in full swing, Kit Harington had a mishap that had nothing to do with camera stunts or sword duels in Game of Thrones.

‘The Franchise’ Costumes Are a Love Letter to Film Crews
Image
We all know how a superhero costume should look in a movie courtesy of Edna Mode: Bold, dramatic, heroic!

But “The Franchise” shows us just how much it takes to get a costume looking right because the on-set suits that both Tecto (Billy Magnussen as Adam) and Eye (Richard E. Grant as Peter) wear — when they’re not sniping at each other in puffy coats, of course — look foamy, fake, and just a little bit wrong. Series costume designers Michele Clapton and Sinéad Kidao turn their very sharp eyes to both the in-universe film the characters are trying to make and the ecosystem of film sets and the fashion choices of various departments.

From PAs wearing cheap, ill-advised Converse to the camera department geared up with enough kit to launch a mountaineering expedition to everyone’s swag from other jobs — keep an eye out for Steph’s (Jessica Hynes...

Game Of Thrones: The Biggest Changes From The Unaired HBO Pilot
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This article contains discussions of sexual assault.

Sometimes, you just don't get things right the first time around. The showrunners of "Game of Thrones," Dan Benioff and D.B. Weiss, know this better than most; the first pilot they shot for HBO's hit series apparently really, really stunk, leading to a reshoot that cost the premium network $10 million.

In James Hibberd's oral history of the series, titled "Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon," the journalist spoke to basically everybody involved with that disastrous first pilot, from Benioff and Weiss themselves to the episode's actors to series author George R.R. Martin. So, what happened here? Apparently, the original "Game of Thrones" pilot shoot was plagued with problems ranging from a rogue horse to weird costumes, the story didn't come across clearly to anybody who watched it, and on top of all of that,...

‘The Nevers’: Fire Eating, Androgyny, and Jack the Ripper — Just Normal Prep for an HBO Role
Image
Rochelle Neil is recounting her audition for “The Nevers,” HBO’s new hourlong fantasy series set in a steampunk Victorian London in the aftermath of a mysterious citywide communal vision that leaves some of the populace with superpowers.

“She’s got a priest tied up, and she’s torturing him and throwing fire,” Neil said. “She’s sort of going on this spiel about her childhood, and what happened to her by this priest in this ministry. And she ends up burning an effigy of the baby Jesus. I have no idea what side of my personality I seemed to have showed for [the producers] to go: ‘She’s really good at torturing!’”

As “Bonfire” Annie Carbey, Neil plays one of “The Touched” — those who, after the mass (maybe?) hallucination (maybe?), attain abilities not generally in the human playbook. Conveniently, if one needs a person, place, or thing torched quickly and efficiently,...

Daenerys Targaryen's White Fur Coat Foreshadowed Her Descent Into Madness All Along
For any Daenerys Targaryen stans still reeling over that controversial Game of Thrones series finale, it looks like the Mother of Dragons' fate was foreshadowed long before Jon Snow showed up with a knife. In an interview with TV Guide, Emmy-winning costume designer Michele Clapton revealed that Daenerys's white fur coat in the season eight premiere was a huge hint at her transformation into the Mad Queen. More than a few Reddit users caught onto the significance of Daenerys's wardrobe while the series was still on air, and we should have known our Khaleesi was going to lose control all along.

"When she arrives and descends on this dragon, she is this sort of angel of mercy."

"Initially it was about the idea that if she's riding a dragon to the North, she should be warm," Clapton said. "And then I decided that actually it's the first time she's performed...

‘Hustlers,’ ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and ‘Queen & Slim’ Receive Costume Design Nominations
Sam Rockwell, Taika Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Rebel Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie, and Roman Griffin Davis in Jojo Rabbit (2019)
The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.

Costume Designers Guild Awards Nominees Include ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ ‘Hustlers,’ ‘Rocketman’
Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Tituss Burgess, Toni Duclottni, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph in Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”

However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”

Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

And Disney swept the sci-fi/fantasy category with nominations for Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” and...

To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Game of Thrones, Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) were on hand to showcase some never seen before bonus material on the big screen for the first time, which was followed by a panel discussion with host Edith Bowman. The cast was joined on stage by members of the off-screen team that helped create the show: Sarah and Barrie Gower (Prosthetics Department), Tommy Dunne (Weapons Master) and Michele Clapton (Costume Design).

Colin Hart and Scott Davis were our Men of the Watch on the red carpet, and we spoke to the cast and crew about their memories of the show, their characters, and which...

Game of Thrones: 10 Hidden Details About Cersei Lannister's Costume You Didn't Notice
Cersei Lannister is one of the most clever and calculating characters ever on Game of Thrones and she even has the wardrobe to back that up. Game of Thrones' costume designer, Michele Clapton has made Cersei's clothing scheme as intricate as the character's plans. As a result, she has one of the most complex fashions and fashion statements in HBO's dark fantasy show.

But of course, that's already a given since Cersei was meant to be the antithesis of the innocent and helpless fantasy princess or queen popularized by Disney. Despite her looks, she's the most Lannister of all the Lannisters. Make sure to take note of that before dressing up as Cersei and do keep these costume hidden details in mind to successfully evoke her.

‘Game of Thrones’: Creative Arts Dominance Predicts Primetime Emmy Coronation
Game of Thrones (2011)
At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, “Game of Thrones'” craft dominance was a testament to both its cultural impact and cumulative excellence. The HBO juggernaut grabbed 10 awards (out of 18 nominations) for its final season. The series won for casting, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, editing, main title design, music composition, makeup (non-prosthetic), sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt coordination — but significantly, the editing victory for “The Long Night” is the key predictor for next Monday’s outstanding drama Emmy win, since five of the last seven winners have gone on to take the big prize.

The series’ final season was capped by the extraordinary work of costume designer Michele Clapton and the VFX team led by supervisor Joe Bauer. Clapton earned her fifth Emmy, concluding with Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) wolfish coronation gown with metal bodice, wielding both power and respect. And the VFX dwarfed all previous annihilation...

How Costume Designers Helped 'Game of Thrones' Star Emilia Clarke (and Other Actresses) Find Their Strength
Game of Thrones (2011)
Fans of Game of Thrones may still be engaged in heated debate over whether Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) turn to the dark side was sufficiently foreshadowed, but there is one person to whom the Mother of Dragons' return to her Targaryen roots is clear as day. "It's somewhere I wouldn't have predicted her going but it was amazing to see how easily it seemed to develop out of the direction that her costumes had been heading," says costume designer Michele Clapton.

From the time Daenerys had escaped her brother's dominance in season one, Clapton ...

However, HBO’s highly acclaimed limited series “Chernobyl” came in second with 14 craft nods. Emilia Clarke at an event for Terminator Genisys (2015)
Emilia Clarke and Regina Hall sat down for a chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors. For more, click here.

Emilia Clarke and Regina Hall spent the TV season playing characters who break through the boys’ club. Clarke, on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” was Daenerys, the dragon queen whose will to power has brought her on an eight-season journey to the heart of the action in Westeros. Hall, a TV veteran, infiltrates a different center of power on Showtime’s comedy “Black Monday,” as the lone woman in a 1980s Wall Street firm.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Reflects on Regal Red Carpet Ensembles
Game of Thrones (2011)
“Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau considered Michele Clapton’s costumes to be instrumental in portraying Jaime Lannister. “When Jaime was a prisoner and wearing only rags, the costume tells a story of being broken,” says the Denmark native and prior Emmy nominee. Likewise, “You put on the Lannister armor and it simply exudes power and strength.” The outfits that inspire confidence in his own life come by way of stylist Ilaria Urbinati. “I’ll put on a beautiful suit and will think it looks fine. And then she’ll go in and do the tailoring and I can see it actually looks so much better.”

2015

After scoring four consecutive drama series nods, “Game of Thrones” finally won the Emmy for Season 5. “It was overwhelming because we didn’t expect it,” says Coster-Waldau. “Although they’d won technical awards, the idea that it could win a main award was far-fetched.

Beloved ‘Game of Thrones’ Characters That Died Were Originally Set to Join Army of the Dead
Game of Thrones (2011)
One of the worst fears “Game of Thrones” fans had going into the final season’s third episode, “The Long Night,” was that the Army of the Dead attacking Winterfell would include the resurrected zombie versions of such beloved characters as Kristian Nairn’s Hodor. While the writers fortunately did not go down that painful route, they did once discuss the potential for beloved dead characters to return as white walkers. Vanity Fair has published exclusive storyboards from the show’s main storyboard artist, William Simpson, that reveal there was a plan at some point in early development to revive dead characters and have them join the Army of the Dead.

Per Simpson’s art, the seventh season premiere “Dragonstone” was originally set to feature the zombie version of the dead wildling Karsi (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen). The character became a fan favorite after her appearance in the battle episode “Hardhome,...

2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards: Oscar frontrunners ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Black Panther’ win
Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Andy Serkis, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright in Black Panther (2018)
The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”

And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”

The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards nominations: Oscar frontrunner ‘The Favourite,’ ‘Black Panther,’ ‘A Star is Born’ …
Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Andy Serkis, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright in Black Panther (2018)
Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. However, the Cdg has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner.

Our Oscar frontrunner “The Favourite” as well as third and fourth-ranked “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” contend for best period costumes as do “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Besides the second-ranked Oscar contender “Black Panther,” the fantasy film nominees are “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”

And the contemporary costume nominees are “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,...
