Exclusive: Cruel Intentions and After We Collided filmmaker Roger Kumble is directing the Voltage Pictures YA feature adaptation of Jamie McGuire’s New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster.

In the wake of the indie global success with the feature take of Anna Todd’s After series, it’s another notch for Voltage in the YA space. The three After movies to date have racked up over $150M WW and the fourth film After Ever Happy will hit cinemas next. Voltage also sold-out worldwide rights on other teen-demo properties such as the best-selling YA novel adaptation Words on Bathroom Walls, and sold foreign on Finding You and Time Is Up.

Broadway director Kenny Leon ("Fences," "Raisin in the Sun") is set to direct the indie film "Cotton" reports Variety.

The story is based on the memoir "Picking Cotton" by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino who was raped in college and later identified Ronald Cotton as her attacker.

Despite protesting his innocence, Cotton was sentenced to life imprisonment but was freed eleven years later when DNA testing proved his innocence.

Thompson-Cannino and Cotton later met and began working together on the Innocence Project which works to promote understanding of the flaws in the criminal-justice system

David Friendly, Mark Clayman and Michael Menchel are producing. Todd Komarnicki ("Elf") penned the adaptation and filming kicks off early next year.

Producers Team for Picking Cotton
Based on the memoir by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino who mistakenly identified the wrong man Producers David Friendly, Mark Clayman and Michael Menchel have teamed up to develop a film based on Picking Cotton, the memoir by rape victim Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and the man she mistakenly identified, Ronald Cotton, according to Variety.

Todd Komarnicki will write the adaptation.

Thompson-Cannino was raped as a college student in 1984 and later identified the 22-year-old Cotton as her attacker, leading to a jury conviction and sentence of life in prison. Cotton maintained his innocence and was freed 11 years later, thanks to DNA testing; Thompson-Cannino and Cotton then met, became friends and began traveling together through the Innocence Project to promote understanding about flaws in the criminal-justice system.

"What they've done is incredibly inspirational in terms of showing how powerful forgiveness is," he added. "It makes me examine how I live my own life."

Jackson has signed on to star in "Same Kind of Different as Me," the film version of a nonfiction bestseller that has been adapted by screenwriters Roderick and Bruce Taylor ("The Brave One").Jackson will play Denver Moore, an ex-con drifter who develops an unlikely friendship with a wealthy Dallas art dealer named Ron Hall. The book, written by Hall, Moore and Lynn Vincent, was optioned by Veralux Media in 2008. According to Variety, Ralph Winter will produce through his 1019 Entertainment production company, with Veralux's Mark Clayman and Jennifer Gates. Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to star in Same Kind Of Different As Me. The deal will see Jackson take on the role of Denver Moore, an ex-con drifter who develops an unlikely friendship with Ron Hall, a wealthy Dallas art dealer. The character of Ron Hall has yet to be cast.

The film is an adaptation of the non-fiction bestseller of the same name which was penned by screenwriters Bruce and Roderick Taylor. The deal is a classic example of a script, a star and a production company getting together in the hopes of finding financing and/or a studio.

The sceenplay had been in circulation for some time until it was optioned by Veralux in 2008. With Jackson now attached, the film is being shopped around, in the hopes of securing funding and finding a director.
