Erasure’s Andy Bell talks solo album, survival, and finally getting a little respect: ‘My armor was to be the campiest queen possible’
Image
Listen to our full interview with Andy Bell here:

You could say Andy Bell is a serial monogamist. He was in a committed relationship with his late manager, Paul M. Hickey, for 25 years, and he’s been happily married to American nightclub owner Stephen Moss since 2013. And of course, in his professional life, Bell has been musical partners with Erasure bandmate Vince Clarke for 40 years — which is decades longer than Clarke lasted with his previous projects, Depeche Mode and Yazoo. And even when Bell makes music outside of Erasure, he’s a loyal guy: He first released music with his other regular collaborator, Dave Aude, in 2014 (the No. 1 dance hit “Aftermath”), and the two actually worked on Bell’s new solo album, Ten Crowns, for more than 12 years.

“I think that's a Taurean trait: You find someone, and if you trust them, they learn to trust you,” Bell muses, adding with a chuckle,...

‘El Mal’ Triumphs in Oscars’ Best Original Song Category to Give ‘Emilia Perez’ a Win
Image
“El Mal,” the show-stopping number sung by Zoe Saldaña in Netflix’s “Emilia Perez,” won the best song Oscar Sunday night for French songwriters Camille and Clément Ducol and their co-writer, the film’s director Jacques Audiard.

Later in the evening, English composer Daniel Blumberg won the original score Oscar for his music for Brady Corbet’s epic “The Brutalist.”

The song “El Mal,” in Audiard’s operatic drama, is a three-minute tour de force for Saldaña as lawyer Rita Castro, a fantasy in which she dances around a room filled with the rich and powerful, decrying the hypocrisy of those responsible for the murders of thousands of Mexicans during the drug wars.

Mick Jagger introduced the category, taking the stage to the strains of the Rolling Stones’ 1968 classic “Sympathy for the Devil.”

After thanking the audience and saying how pleased he was to present the award, he said, “Much as I love doing it,...

Sharon Van Etten Tries a New Role: Team Player
Image
Sharon Van Etten isn’t the kind of songwriter who blends into a group. She’s always had an uncanny knack for making you feel utterly alone in the dark with her songs, even when you’re hearing them in broad daylight or singing them with a crowd. Who else would begin an album with the line “Sitting at the bar, I told you everything,” then follow it with “You said, ‘Holy shit’”? Ever since her earliest indie-folk days, she’s known how to turn any room into the loneliest place on earth.

Haunting ‘The Brutalist’ Score Sets the Stage for a ‘Disorienting Sensory Overload’ — Listen Now
Image
There is a brutal beauty to “The Brutalist” score, as composed by Daniel Blumberg.

The now Golden Globe-nominated score will be released as a full album this Friday, December 13. Prior to its unveiling, IndieWire shares two of the score’s key themes, “Erzsébet” and “Construction.”

Writer/director Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” centers on Adrien Brody’s immigrant architect László Tóth, who arrives in the U.S. after WWII. László’s marriage to his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) is rebuilding stateside, just as he begins construction on a massive complex commissioned by wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce).

Composer Blumberg wrote the music, which will be released by Milan Records. Blumberg worked closely with Corbet across the seven-year gestation period for the film, resulting in almost two hours of original music, including for the 15-minute intermission. Per an official press statement, Corbet and Blumberg “identified early...

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift’s Most Personal Album Yet
Image
Poets only want love if it’s torture. And when the poet is Taylor Swift, you always have to figure love and torture are never more than a few verses apart. Taylor became a legend as the poet laureate of teen romance. But that was kid stuff compared to the adult heartbreak of her stunning new album, The Tortured Poets Department. A year after getting out of a six-year relationship, Taylor’s got bad men on the brain. But they’ve always been her specialty. As she notes here, in...

Allie X Is Tearing Up Her Sound and Going Back to the Eighties

Allie X is still trying to figure out how to describe her upcoming album, Girl With No Face.

With past records like Cape God and Super Sunset, she always “tried to tie a bow around” her music with a clear concept and message. For this new one, which she’s announcing via Rolling Stone, nothing quite fits: “It’s a little more mysterious,” she says.

Out on Feb. 23, 2024, Girl With No Face is the Canadian avant-pop singer’s first album in more than four years. She describes it as “aggressive,...

Erasure’s Vince Clarke Announces Debut Solo Album Songs of Silence, Shares First Single: Stream
Image
Erasure’s Vince Clarke has announced that he’ll be releasing his debut solo album, Songs of Silence, on November 17th via Mute. Along with the announcement, he has shared the album’s first single, “The Lamentations of Jeremiah.” Stream the song below.

Spanning 10 tracks, Songs of Silence will be an ambient instrumental album, forged by experimenting in the studio during the extended downtime of the pandemic. Clarke — whose compositions with Erasure and Depeche Mode have already earned him a place in the annals of pop history — began tapping into the possibilities of Eurorack, a modular synthesizer that can create a seemingly limitless number of sounds. The result was a flow of creativity that eventually blossomed into a full-fledged album.

Pre-orders for Songs of Silence are ongoing. See the artwork and full tracklist below.

“I could have gone on forever, I could have not stopped,” Clarke said of his creative method in a press statement.

Depeche Mode’s ‘Memento Mori’ Is a Bleak Celebration
Image
In “Ghosts Again,” one of many introspective moments on Depeche Mode’s 15th full-length, Memento Mori, Dave Gahan croons, “Time is fleeting.” This is not a new revelation, but the tranquility in his voice feels fresh. More than four decades have passed since the group formed as a quartet of mostly teens eager to immerse themselves in the nascent synth-pop culture with party anthems like “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Now, with only Gahan and Martin Gore left in the lineup following the death last year of keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher,...

We wanted to take a moment and acknowledge the outpouring of love for Andy that we’ve seen from all of you over the last few weeks. It’s incredible to see all of your photos, to read your words, and to see how much Andy meant to all of you. As you can imagine, it’s been a strange,...

Farewell Andy Fletcher: A Toast to Depeche Mode’s Quiet One

Goodbye to Andy Fletcher, a beloved New Wave uncle to countless Depeche Mode fans over the years. Fletch, who died at age 60 of natural causes, was a founding member of the pioneering synth-pop sages, and a crucial element in their chemistry. Every sullen goth teen who ever wore black in the Eighties has a soft spot in their heart for this man, which is why fans all over the world are blasting Black Celebration in his honor right now. Fletch represented their original punk-rock spirit of inspired amateurism. As he...

‘We have a hostility to being boring’: Sparks, still flying in their 70s
Adam Driver
Their Adam Driver musical sent Cannes into raptures and Edgar Wright has made an all-star documentary about them. The Mael brothers explain why they’ll always be hopelessly in love with pop

In 1974, John Lennon was startled as he was watching Top of the Pops. He rang Ringo Starr. “You won’t believe what’s on television,” he reportedly said. “Marc Bolan is playing a song with Adolf Hitler.”

This was Sparks, performing their glorious pop opus This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us. “It was equidistant between the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and the Daleks on Doctor Who,” says Edgar Wright, the director of Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead, and now a documentary about the duo, The Sparks Brothers. “Fifteen million people saw it. Think of the next generation of bands watching: the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Duran Duran, Joy Division, Squeeze,...

Justin Theroux in The Leftovers (2014)

And over the course of getting from bereaved jus' folks to Mark Linn-Baker, Damon Lindelof's mediation on mourning in America became one of the most moving and thrilling television dramas of the young century.

In fact, Americans may have never been introduced to these greats without an FM radio station based in Long Island, New York, called Wlir.

The small group of radio visionaries at Wlir — including program director Denis McNamara — are highlighted in a new documentary titled Dare to Be Different, premiering Thursday at Tribeca Film Festival. The film includes McNamara, the...

50 bizarre examples of movie tie-ins and merchandise
Movie merchandise is big business. But some people will try and slap the name of The Avengers or Batman on anything...

Cool film stuff can be almost as fun as actually going to the movies. Think of a Batman cape, an Arnold Schwarzenegger action figure, or Goldeneye on the N64. Hell, the merchandising can often be more enjoyable than the actual film – remember how much fun the first few months of 1999 were before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was actually released?

Yet, in the chase to make a quick buck out of devoted fans, some... let's just say less relevant, movie merchandise is churned out and flogged to the public.

Andy Bell voted out of 'Popstar To Operastar'
Andy Bell and Paul Hickey
Andy Bell has become the fourth celebrity to leave Popstar To Operastar. The Erasure lead failed to win over the judges after landing bottom of the public vote alongside Toploader's Joseph Washbourn. Bell's fate was seemingly sealed after he forgot his words and appeared to lose confidence in his performance during a final sing-off against Washbourn. As host Myleene Klass threw voting over to the panel, judge Katherine Jenkins stated that she had "hoped [the decision] wouldn't be as clear cut", before accepting that eliminating Bell was the "totally fair thing to do". Jenkins's sentiment was echoed by Vanessa-Mae, who argued that "nerves got the better of" Bell and opted to vote him out. Simon Callow also decided to spare Washbourn - who has finished in the bottom of the public vote for the previous two weeks - (more)...

Joe McElderry brave to come out, says Andy Bell
Vince Clarke
Erasure singer Andy Bell has spoken highly of his Popstar To Operastar colleague Joe McElderry's "brave" decision to come out as gay. Bell, who himself is openly gay, recalled his own struggles to succeed in the "male-dominated" music industry and vowed to support the X Factor champion throughout his career. "I said to him that I thought it was very brave what he'd done," Bell told The Sun. "I've told him to come to me when he wants to talk about it. "I hope I'll stay in touch with Joe. I'm going to say to him, (more)...

Popstar To Operastar: Andy Bell wants to help Joe McElderry as a gay singer
Andy Bell has admitted that he has been having some hearts to hearts with fellow Popstar To Operastar singer Joe McElderry.

The former Erasure star was keen to speak to the former X Factor winner, after he was outed as being gay on Twitter last year and later admitted his homosexuality in an interview with a tabloid newspaper.

Andy himself has been openly gay for decades. On 17 December 2004, he publicly announced that he is HIV-positive and has been aware of this since 1998. Speaking about Joe’s decision to come out, he told The Sun:

“I said to him that I thought it was very brave what he’d done.

“I’ve told him to come to me when he wants to talk about it.

“We’re both quite shy but we’re chatting a lot more now than we were at the beginning of the series. I’ve also spoken...

Take Me Home Tonight Soundtrack
The Take Me Home Tonight soundtrack. Ooh, it was like The Scarlet Pimpernel. Sort of. This ’80s-set ensemble comedy for ‘young people’ was shot back in 2007 before being left to languish on the shelf, then saved from the guillotine of no-release oblivion by Ryan Kavanaugh, the masked baronet of Relativity Media. Hurrah! A pity though that Eddie Money doesn’t seem to have survived the ordeal. His 1986 hit which gives the movie its title is conspicuously absent from this soundtrack, despite having cropped up in the trailer.

Not that there is any shortage of ’80s radio monsters here. This is a paean to pop music’s past, an extended celebration of those hook-laden hits which detractors would rush to peg as lowest common denominator, but which equally can deliver high levels of idiot-grin enjoyment for those willing to check their musical ego at the door. An obvious comparison is to...

Erasure star hurt by "horrible" La Roux jibe
Andy Bell and Paul Hickey
Andy Bell has revealed that he was hurt by a "horrible" comment made by La Roux singer Elly Jackson. Jackson, 22, was less than favourable about the Erasure frontman's appearance when reviewing his latest single in the NME. "She called me 'mutton dressed as lamb'. I thought that was a really horrible thing to say, though it's probably the sort of thing I would have said when I was her age," Bell told Digital Spy. "I remember one time me and Vince [Clarke, Erasure bandmate] said we didn't like Diana Ross. The next week she came to see us in the dressing room at Top Of The Pops and gave us a telling (more)...
