‘Queer as Folk’ Star: People Forget “All the F***ing Time” How Series Paved Way for TV’s Golden Age
Image
To close out a lively and, at times, heartfelt Q&a featuring a handful of actors and the key creative team responsible for Showtime’s Queer as Folk, moderator Frank DeCaro asked the panelists the night’s most profound question timed to the milestone anniversary: “Looking back over the last 25 years, what influence do you think Queer As Folk had on television and the world?”

Without missing a beat, Peter Paige, who starred as the flamboyant and beloved character Emmett Honeycutt, said, “Give me that goddamn microphone,” a demand that telegraphed a powerful statement was about to be dropped.

“I don’t think Queer as Folk gets nearly enough credit for being at the forefront of the golden age of television, and I mean that 100 percent,” said Paige, who graduated from the show to become a successful TV creator, writer and producer (The Fosters, Good Trouble). “Adding complicated, sexualized adult...

12 Best LGBTQ+ Shows To Watch During Pride Month
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the last couple of decades, LGBTQ+ characters have become more and more common on television, though this history goes further back than you might think. As Shayna Maci Warner writes in "The Rainbow Age of Television," The first "expressly named gay character" appeared on the first episode of "N.Y.P.D." in 1967. Meanwhile, the first lesbian couple appeared on "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors" in 1972, though the first lesbian kiss on TV didn't occur until 1991 in an episode of "L.A. Law."

Queer representation has increased greatly since then, though GLAAD's 2023-2024 Where We Are On TV report indicates that there has been a decrease in LGBTQ+ characters in the last few years. Thankfully, many queer-centric shows from years past are available to stream (apart from the ones that have been pulled from streaming), meaning we still have a significant...

Image
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was a bonkers sequel that took the simple masked slasher movie franchise to new heights (or new depths?). The early 90s film that attempted to end the franchise was hated by critics and very divisive with fans. However, now you can get the full story of what the creative people were thinking as director Adam Marcus recalls being a bright-eyed, fresh-faced film student who was given the keys to the kingdom and didn’t exactly know what to do with the newly purchased property from New Line Cinema. Sharon Gless Reflects on “Queer As Folk” and… a Reunion Soon?
There was never anything like it and there will never be.

Those are the words of actress Sharon Gless talking about the gone-but-not-forgotten series, Queer As Folk, the Us take on the British hit series which ran on Showtime from December 2000- August 2005.

And while the actors from the show have been busy in multiple projects – Peter Paige (Emmett) is Exec Producing the ABC Family series, The Fosters, Gale Harold (Brian) has been acting in series like Defiance and The Secret Circle and Randy Harrison (Justin) has concentrated mostly onstage though he appears with Michael Urie in Such Good People, which is currently on the film festival circuit – is there a chance we could see them, along with co-stars Hal Sparks, Scott Lowell, Thea Gill, Michelle Clunie and, of course, multi Emmy-winner Sharon Gless, reprise their roles?

According to Gless, who talked to TheBacklot last week, the answer is yes.

Friday the 13th - Jason's Top 13 Horniest Kills
In the world of Friday the 13th, “Death and Sex” replaces the old “Death and Taxes” adage with endless reliability. Jason’s always on the prowl for more victims, and what better way for him to pad his numbers than by catching folks not only amidst the throes of passion but also in their euphoric comedowns?

In honor of this week's Friday the 13th, presented here for your, uh, pleasure are the 13 horniest kills in Friday the 13th history. That is to say, the top kills built around sexual machinations in one way or another. So please slide on a rubber, stay safe and give this a read!

13. Here’s one for the both of you! (Friday the 13th Part 2)

This fan favorite was obviously going to wind up on this list. By now everyone knows this infamous dispatch of two ‘counselors in training’ was curbed from Mario Bava...

AfterElton Briefs: Bryan Fuller Doubles Down, "Queer" Is Coming, "Spartacus" Is Pre-Renewed, and More!
Birthday shoutouts! Jason and Jeremy London (above) are 39, Michelle Clunie is 42, and Joni Mitchell is 68. This always gives me goosebumps. Steve Buscemi will direct an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel Queer, which will star Guy Pearce and Ben Foster. The lifetime blood donation ban for gay men was lifted today in most of the UK ... but there are strings attached. Out Bryan Fuller is close to having two series orders from NBC. The first is an updated version of The Munsters, and the other is a TV version of Hannibal. I'm not keen on reboots and remakes, but Bryan's quality track record speaks for itself. John Leguizamo supports marriage-equality. And I could listen to him pronounce "majority" all day.

Below you can see the newest episode of The Variants, which includes a cupcake fight and Richard's plan to sleep with Michael Phelps. Ginger Snap!

Deadline takes Brett Ratner...

'The Mercy Seat,' Vs. Theatre Company at [Inside] the Ford
Neil Labute may be among the most polarizing figures in American theater, but a broad segment of Back Stage readers was united in its praise for Vs. Theatre Company's recent mounting of the playwright's 2002 work "The Mercy Seat."The production, which ran this spring at [Inside] the Ford in Hollywood, was named a Critic's Pick by Back Stage theater critic Les Spindle, who wrote of the 9/11-themed two-hander and actors Johnny Clark and Michelle Clunie, "Director Ron Klier guides two fiercely committed actors in a knockout production that elicits profound ruminations on urgent issues."Reader comments:"Fantastic venue, acting was superb, and set design was high-quality." —Marie Wong"There wasn't a weak link in any aspect of the production." —Denise Olson"High quality; best acting, stage design, and direction. I felt like I was in the living room of the players right up on stage with them." —Judy BeckerRunners-Up:- "God of Carnage,...

Michelle Clunie, 'The Mercy Seat,' Vs. Theatre Company at [Inside] the Ford
Michelle Clunie faced a tall order taking on Abby in "The Mercy Seat," a role that proved emotionally exhausting for no less a stage and screen veteran than Sigourney Weaver, who originated the character in Neil Labute's two-hander Off-Broadway in 2002. Clunie appears to have been up to the demanding material, however, as Back Stage's readers selected her turn in Vs. Theatre Company's spring 2011 production as the most memorable stage performance of the past 12 months.Writing for Back Stage, critic Les Spindle singled out the actor: "Clunie brilliantly segues between harping harridan and vulnerable woman in love, illuminating the multiple dimensions of this ostensibly tough cookie."Reader comments:"Incredibly complex character handled with extreme gentleness and insight. My first time seeing her perform; I was blown away." —Kevin Flynn"Michelle Clunie was remarkable. It was nonstop hard-core emotional acting at her best!" —Sepi GhafouriRunners-Up:- The cast of "God of Carnage" at the.

Is ‘In Between Men’ The First Gay Web-to-tv Series?
Earlier this year I received an email from a press rep for a surprising series, In Between Men. What was so surprising? The show was holding a red carpet premiere at TriBeCa Cinemas in New York, had enlisted minor stars like Michelle Clunie (Queer as Folk) and Chase Coleman (Boardwalk Empire), and boasted a sleek look, with glamorous New York locations and a kick-ass wardrobe from Marc Jacobs. And I’d never heard of it, or its creator. Why hadn’t I heard of this show? In Between Men is truly an anomaly in the web series world. A well-funded gay buddy soap, the show was written, shot and released in just a year by a virtual unknown in the industry, creator Quincy Morris. Since releasing its first two episodes, Ibm has been covered by Queerty, Jezebel, Têtu, among others. How did a New York professional and first-time filmmaker corral...
