When James Gunn Did Not Want Chris Hemsworth In Guardians Of Galaxy Vol 3: “They Chose To Have That Ending…”
Image
James Gunn did not want Chris Hemsworth in Guardians Of Galaxy Vol 3 (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)

Gunn brought his signature style to Guardians Of Galaxy Vol 3, transforming the lesser-known Marvel comic into a blockbuster that delivered three box office hits.

All thanks to his casting choices which played a crucial role in the film’s success, actors like Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel perfectly embodied the quirky and emotional tone of the movie. But did you know Gunn could have ruined the franchise if he had decided to move forward with his initial plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3?

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn initially didn’t want to include Chris Hemsworth Thor despite the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Thor joins Guardians at the end. However, this was only temporary, as Thor departed...

When Jennifer Lawrence Revealed Why She Politely Asked Robert De Niro To Leave Her Wedding Rehearsal Dinner
Image
Jennifer Lawrence’s Wedding Drama (Photo Credit – Facebook/Wikimedia)

So picture this: Jennifer Lawrence kicked Robert De Niro out of her wedding rehearsal dinner. Yeah, you read that right. Hollywood royalty got the boot. And honestly? It’s giving chaotic wedding energy, and we’re here for it.

So, Jen tied the knot with Cooke Maroney back in 2019. Fast forward a few years, they’ve got a little one named Cy, and life’s all cute and cozy. But rewind to the big day prep? Absolute mayhem. Wedding stress is real, but toss in guests like Adele, Kris Jenner, and De Niro himself? That’s a whole different circus.

Jen admitted it herself—wedding planning had her on edge. “It’s so stressful. You’re not having fun. You’re just like, ‘Is that person having fun?’” she said at the Golden Globes. And on top of that, there was the cold.

Chris Evans Once Said He Would Do Anything To Be In Star Wars Franchise, Even If He Was Just A “Stormtrooper” Or “Wookie”
Image
Is Chris Evans eager and excited to join the Star Wars franchise? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Chris Evans in Star Wars? Now that’s something fans might not have expected. The former Captain America is out here manifesting a role in the galaxy far, far away, and honestly, why hasn’t it happened yet? The actor has already conquered the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even voiced Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Lightyear. But there’s still one Disney checkbox left which is Star Wars.

And he’s not picky about it either. Jedi? Sith? Rebel pilot? No. Evans is down for literally anything. In an interview with MTV (via ScreenRant), the Marvel star once said: “God, would I love to be in Star Wars! God – I mean I would do anything: if I was just a Stormtrooper, I’d be thrilled. Yeah, I’ll take a Wookie though. That’s fine.

Dragon Ball, Bleach Star Gives His Seal of Approval to Live-Action Anime
Image
While Dragon Ball fans might be wary of another live-action adaptation after the poorly received Dragonball: Evolution, one of the franchise's biggest stars just gave an interview that could signal interest in another stab at live-action.

In an interview with Cbr during San Diego Comic-Con, Frieza's original Japanese voice actor, Ryusei Nakao, was asked about live-action adaptations of the franchises he has worked on. Although his answer doesn't mention Dragon Ball, the fact that he's open to live-action adaptations of anime and manga at all naturally leads to speculation about the world's most iconic anime series.

I'm in an anime called Bleach, in which I play the role of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and it hasn't been adapted into a live-action version yet, so I'd like to see it if it were to be made into a live-action version.

Nakao is a veteran voice actor in Japan. In addition to voicing Frieza...

MCU Movies Ranked: From Iron Man to The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Image
With more than 15 years and 30 movies behind it, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still doing alright. Across this cavalcade of almost three dozen movies are a wide variety of iconic superheroes, grand stories, impressive visual tapestries, and the occasional entry that manages to be just “not bad.” We all have our rankings for the very best and the very worst of the Marvel series, but now JoBlo officially has the MCU movies ranked from Iron Man to the newly released The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Here we go, from least to best:

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Director Taika Waititi harnessed the mighty power of Chris Hemsworth’s sense of humor and blended it with his own colorful sensibilities for the hilarious, character-reviving Thor: Ragnarok. All eyes were on the sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder, especially given it would see the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster (taking on the mantle of Mighty Thor). Sadly,...

'Superman' Topples the 93% Rotten Tomatoes Comic Book Hit Critics Called a "New Standard for the MCU"
Image
There was a time when strictly average Marvel Cinematic Universe films, such as Thor: The Dark World, would do excellent business at the box office. That time has passed. Now, even something as well-reviewed as The Fantastic Four: First Steps is poised to underperform. Meanwhile, under the leadership of Marvel alum James Gunn, the rival DC Universe is off to a fantastic start with Supermanhaving already made more than $550 million worldwide. The movie recently overtook one of the McU's last breakout hits, before Avengers: Endgame changed the landscape of the franchise forever.

In its fourth week of release, Superman passed Thor: Ragnarok at the domestic box office. Supermanhas grossed $316 million so far, while Ragnarok concluded its run with $315 million in 2017. The movie was released only a few years after Gunn himself introduced his unique brand of vibrant mainstream filmmaking to the MCU with the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie was a massive hit,...

The Marvel Movie That Left Thor Star Chris Hemsworth The Most Disappointed
Image
Alan Taylor's 2013 fantasy film "Thor: The Dark World" is very often held up as the worst film in the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was the eighth film of the MCU, and was set after the events of 2012's "The Avengers" wherein Thor (Chris Hemsworth) teamed up with other superpowered champions to fight off an alien invasion. The invasion was led by Thor's treacherous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and "The Avengers" ended with Thor hauling a handcuffed Loki back to Asgard, their home dimension.

Thor's follow-up story, however, was mere superhero hooey. He arrived back in Asgard just in time for a cosmic convergence that allowed magical interdimensional portals to open randomly throughout the universe. Thor also witnessed the reappearance of a mystical force called the Aether that a Dark Elf named Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) once wielded. The convergence and the Aether resurrect Malekith, and he sets about looking for his magical McGuffin.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film reportedly has a working title
Image
When it comes to Star Wars directors, Taika Waititi has arguably done the most with minimal credits. His episode of The Mandalorian remains one of the series' most astonishing chapters to date. An accomplished writer, director, and actor, Waititi possesses a unique knowledge of filmmaking from both in front of and behind the camera. He's no stranger to Star Wars, either; the likelihood that his franchise film will still happen remains high, maybe now more so than ever.

There's a lot of info out there -- officially confirmed and otherwise -- about the next Star Wars movies to hit theaters over the next few years and beyond. Waititi's project remains one of the most uncertain ... and definitely the most mysterious. A new rumor suggests that the project, which seemed to have been put on hold, may still eventually make it to production after all.

Star Wars fans first learned of...

'Cancelled' Star Wars project moving ahead after all, reports say
Image
The normally solid footing beneath the Star Wars franchise hasn't been all that solid recently. Although the classic Lucasfilm movie series continues to be adored by fans all over the world, it hasn't had the same levels of success in recent years. In fact, it also hasn't had the same levels of success that it experienced just a few years ago after its launch on Disney Plus.

Although the likes of The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka have been pretty major success stories for the saga (with Andor being a high point critically), it has suffered some missteps too, with fan-favorite series The Acolyte getting cancelled after just one season due to its enormous budget. And that underlines a lot of what is happening in the industry right now, as studios realize that big-budget productions on television aren't all that feasible due to their need to turn a profit. And with that,...

Pamela Anderson’s The Naked Gun Earns Rave Reviews, but 1 Comedy Role From Nearly 20 Years Ago Got Her Called ‘Wh*re’
Image
In her 2023 memoir Love, Pamela, Pamela Anderson made a shocking revelation that her then-boyfriend Kid Rock lost it during the Borat premiere after realizing she was in the film and called her a wh*re. Well, the surprise didn’t land well. She wrote (via Variety),

I didn’t tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him. I forgot about the part in the film that referenced the s*x tape. Bob stormed out, calling me a wh*re and worse.

Of course, the fallout was ugly and fast. He peeled away in his car, leaving her stranded, only to later destroy a framed photo at home, mistaking Marilyn Monroe for her. While their relationship was already on the verge of cohabitation imploding that night, Anderson has now made her Hollywood comeback in full swing with The Naked Gun reboot.

If You Loved Happy Gilmore 2, You’ll Adore These 5 Comedy Films

28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.

Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.

Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. All 37 MCU Movies Ranked
Image
Most of Marvel Studios’s films are the cinematic equivalent of breadcrumbs, which have been dropped into theaters strategically so as to keep one looking for the next sequel or crossover, when the endless televisual exposition will eventually, theoretically yield an event of actual consequence. Occasionally, however, a Marvel film transcends this impersonality and justifies one’s patience. Weird, stylish, and surprisingly lyrical, Ant-Man, Iron Man 3, and Doctor Strange attest to the benefits of the old Hollywood-style studio system that Marvel has resurrected: Under the umbrella of structure and quota is security, which can bequeath qualified freedom. On the occasion of the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, here’s a ranking of every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to date. Chuck Bowen

Taika Waititi Remaking Sports Documentary With a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Was Worse Than Thor 4
Image
Taika Waititi’s 2023 film Next Goal Wins failed to impress audiences, earning just a 46% critic score—making it an even bigger disappointment than his much-criticized Thor: Love and Thunder. Turns out, Waititi’s movie was a remake of the beloved 2014 sports documentary that had scored a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its emotional storytelling and real-life inspiration.

The original documentary, directed by Mike Brett, followed Dutch coach Thomas Rongen as he attempted the nearly impossible task of transforming the American Samoa soccer team—once known as the world’s worst—into winners. It was raw, touching, and full of hope, which made it an instant hit with critics.

According to critics, Waititi’s remake starring Michael Fassbender leaned too much into island clichés, wasn’t funny enough, and turned a real-life underdog story into a comedy film. It seems the director repeated his Thor 4 mistake and delivered yet another cinematic flop.

Avengers: Doomsday Has a Major Chris Hemsworth Update After Pedro Pascal
Image
Marvel President Kevin Feige is cleaning house all across the board for the next phase of MCU movies, leading up to Avengers: Doomsday. It seems to be an essential step to cure his kingdom of superhero fatigue and launch a brand new chapter moving forward. But unlike Dcu, the revisionist formula for this next saga does not necessarily follow along the lines of: in with the new, out with the old.

An update from The Town‘s very own Matthew Belloni verifies that, alongside Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic, who is now set to lead the Avengers, one of the MCU’s original six is getting a glorified comeback. Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor will now reportedly be the second lead in Avengers: Doomsday.

Big Move for Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ Series as New Writer Steps In
Image
The Booster Gold series is back on track at HBO Max, and it’s got a new creative lead. David Jenkins, best known for creating the comedy Our Flag Means Death, has been brought in to write the pilot. If the show goes to series, Jenkins is also expected to take over as showrunner.

This news comes at a busy time for Warner Bros. Discovery, especially after The Penguin scored 24 Emmy nominations. That kind of success could give Booster Gold a boost as one of the next big DC TV projects.

Booster Gold is based on the DC Comics character created by Dan Jurgens. The main character, Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is from Gotham City and was once a college football star. He got kicked out of school for gambling, but later used future tech to become a superhero.

He’s known for chasing fame and fortune and not always being the most serious guy.

Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ TV Show Gets an Important Production Update
Image
HBO Max is finally moving ahead with its Booster Gold series, and they’ve found the person to lead it. David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, has signed on to write the pilot episode. If the show gets picked up, he’s expected to take over as showrunner too.

This news comes not long after a big Emmy nomination day for The Penguin, another DC-related project. That show scored 24 nominations, including ones for Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

With that kind of momentum, Booster Gold could be the next big DC TV project for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The character Booster Gold was created by Dan Jurgens. His real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, and he’s from Gotham City. He was a college football star who lost his scholarship after getting caught gambling. Later, he used futuristic technology to become a superhero, though he’s mostly...

Why Apple TV+ Canceled Time Bandits
Image
After directing the eternally quotable "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," Terry Gilliam tried and failed to bring his dystopian satire "Brazil" to the silver screen. Burned by the experience of explaining the over-the-top world of "Brazil," Gilliam set his sights on creating a family-friendly film that would be an easier pitch, and the result was his 1981 classic "Time Bandits."

Telling the story of a young boy whisked away on an adventure with a band of thieves traveling through space and time on a quest for stolen treasure, "Time Bandits" remains one of Gilliam's best films because of its childish exuberance and whimsical imagination. It established Gilliam as one of cinema's most outlandish visionaries, and its reputation has only grown over the years.

In our modern era of reboots and reimaginings, it wasn't surprising to hear that Apple TV+ was bringing "Time Bandits" back from the past, this time with...

Kevin Feige Drops Exciting Update on Chris Hemsworth’s Return to the MCU
Image
Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor in the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Following that, Avengers: Secret Wars will come out a year later on December 17, 2027. Beyond these two films, Marvel hasn’t officially announced what’s next for Thor or Hemsworth.

Kevin Feige recently spoke about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the topic of Thor came up.

He said, “Where we have great actors playing great characters, I think it would be fun to see them in multiple places.” This suggests Feige sees value in keeping strong actors like Hemsworth involved for a while longer.

There’s also been talk about recasting some of Marvel’s iconic heroes like Iron Man and Captain America. Feige explained it’s a mixed situation. While some characters will eventually get new actors, Feige feels Hemsworth is still in his prime as Thor.

Why Jon Favreau Stopped Directing Marvel Movies After Iron Man 2
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Iron Man is still one of the most popular Marvel heroes in the public consciousness despite not appearing on screen in a movie since "Spider-Man: Far From Home," and that popularity doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The dream team of director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. defined the earliest days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but their partnership as filmmaker and star actually concluded after "Iron Man 2," and some fans are surprised by that when they revisit the Avenger's first trilogy of movies. Well, Favreau had a good reason to step away from the Marvel movie scene after his second outing with Tony Stark, and it has everything to do with the break-neck pace the MCU movies had in those days.

2008's "Iron Man" changed the course of the superhero movie genre along with...

15 Marvel Cinematic Universe Characters Who Disappeared Without Explanation
Image
Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched in 2008 with the release of Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" starring Robert Downey Jr., True Believers have met hundreds of characters in both film and TV shows. And we're not just talking about the marquee names like Captain America, Spider-Man, or Wolverine either. As the multiverse expanded and expanded, this epic franchise began to introduce Defenders, Eternals, and Inhumans. And no one could have predicted that one of the most beloved corners of the MCU would belong to the Guardians of the Galaxy. But with "Avengers: Doomsday" on the horizon, this expansive ensemble is only about to get larger.

With so many characters currently inhabiting the House of Ideas, there is only enough screen time to go around. As much as we'd love to see some of our favorite characters all the time, they sometimes need to fade into the background a bit to serve the larger narrative.

“Dredd” Is The Law
Director Taika Waititi (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) is currently developing a new live-action feature adapting the ‘right wing’ 2000 Ad Publishing comic book series “Judge Dredd”, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra:

Taika Waititi’s ‘Judge Dredd’ Movie Isn’t Inspiring After 6 Undeveloped Projects
Image
Despite Taika Waititi‘s already heavy portfolio, the Kiwi director keeps adding to his slate of movies and other franchise projects, the most recent one being a live-action Judge Dredd film. The violent and bleak comic satire, which became hugely popular in the UK since its launch in the late 1970s, has been a Hollywood pet project for the longest time.

In the past, Sylvester Stallone tried and failed while Karl Urban somewhat succeeded in bringing the comic book character to life. However, this time around, the project will be a collaboration of the action-fanatic mind of Drew Pearce and the eccentric genius of Taika Waititi (The Hollywood Reporter).

But despite the made-to-be-successful pairing of the two, the future of Judge Dredd looks as bleak in reality as it does in the comics. And Waititi’s growing list of the following undeveloped projects is to blame for the growing suspicion...

Taika Waititi Tackling New Judge Dredd Movie — Drew Pearce To Write
Image
Now here's a bit of eye-catching movie news that we imagine nobody had on their 2025 bingo cards. THR are reporting that Taika Waititi — the Kiwi funnyman and filmmaker responsible for the likes of Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit, and both Thor: Ragnarok and Love And Thunder — has just added another project to his ever-stacked plate: a new Judge Dredd movie. And, what's more, he's bringing The Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation scribe Drew Pearce along for the ride into Mega-City One.

While Waititi's eclectic filmography to date may not immediately suggest that he's the prime candidate to bring 2000 Ad comics' iconic judge, jury, and bloody brutal executioner — previously given the cinematic treatment with Sylvester Stallone back in 1995, then Karl Urban in 2012's Alex Garland penned Dredd — back to the big screen, THR's sources are quick to point out that Taika and Pearce are firm friends who both...

Judge Dredd | Brand new movie on the way
Image
Taika Waititi and Drew Pearce are trying to bring Judge Dredd to the big screen again – more on the very welcome story here.

Now this is slightly unexpected, but certainly interesting. A third feature adaptation of the much-loved 2000Ad strip Judge Dredd is heading to the screen, and it already looks as though it has a bit of momentum behind it.

Taika Waititi is set to direct the new film, which is going to be working from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The latter’s last high profile movie was the underappreciated The Fall Guy, and for Waititi, his last feature was Next Goal Wins.

The pair are reportedly friends, and have been looking for a project to collaborate on. Then they landed on the pages of 2000Ad, and the idea is for the new movie to launch a universe of Judge Dredd screen work.

We’ve heard that before,...

Thor: Love And Thunder Director Taika Waititi Developing A New Judge Dredd Movie
Image
After wowing audiences with Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi's Love and Thunder left most MCU fans perplexed and ready to grab pitchforks.

While Thor: Ragnarok was widely praised, Thor: Love and Thunder received a more mixed response from critics and audiences. Following that, Taika Waititi appeared to take a step back from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s been speculated that Marvel may be reassessing what role he could play in future projects.

Likewise, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has been somewhat vague in recent interviews about the status of Waititi's Star Wars movie, which was first announced back in May 2020.

However, it seems Waititi is not done with the superhero genre as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that he's currently developing a Judge Dredd movie with prominent British screenwriter Drew Pearce, known for Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

A new ‘Judge Dredd’ movie is in...

Taika Waititi is one of the most popular filmmakers working today, and the director is now attached to a film based on the Judge Dredd sci-fi franchise. Dredd 2 Was Never Going To Happen, So The Just-Announced Reboot Was Inevitable
Image
It's official: A "Judge Dredd" reboot is in development. This time, "Thor: Ragnarok" director and Oscar winner Taika Waititi will be at the helm. He's teaming up with screenwriter Drew Pearce, the screenwriter of "The Fall Guy" and "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation" fame, making for an attractive duo. But fans of 2012's "Dredd" may be unhappy as this is a reboot and not a sequel, so don't expect to see Karl Urban putting the helmet back on.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new "Judge Dredd" movie based on the character from the "2000 Ad" comic series is being shopped to various Hollywood studios, with a bidding war likely to ensue. This project seemingly takes the place of the "Judge Dredd: Mega-City One" TV show that had been in the works since 2017. The franchise rights holders, Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith, are on board as producers alongside Roy Lee,...

'Judge Dredd' Getting Movie Reboot Directed by Taika Waititi
Image
After years of fans campaigning for a sequel to 2012's Dredd, it looks like they will get a new Judge Dredd movie, just not the one they expected. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Judge Dredd first appeared in the British weekly anthology comic 2000 Ad. A cult sci-fi hero, the character has had two film adaptations. The first was Sylvester Stallone's 1995 film, which disappointed fans and critics. 2012's Dredd, starring Karl Urban, earned positive critical reviews and, despite disappointing at the box office, gained a cult following.

Taika Waititi is set to direct a reboot of Judge Dredd, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Waititi's credits include the McU's Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as critically acclaimed comedies such as The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows, and Jojo Rabbit. The film script will be written by Drew Pearce,...

Carlos Ezquerra
Taika Waititi working on new Judge Dredd movie
Carlos Ezquerra
Judge Dredd is a judge, jury and executioner all in one, meting out violent justice in a future dystopia. He proved very popular when writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra first created him in comic book form in the late 1970s. He's appeared on the big screen a couple times since, in a 1995 movie where he was played by Sylvester Stallone and a 2012 film where he was played by Karl Urban. Generally speaking, the Stallone movie is remembered as a cheesy misfire and the Urban version an under-appreciated gem.

Third time's the charm? Taika Waititi, the director behind movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, is teaming up with writer Drew Pearce for another Judge Dredd movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Nothing's finalized yet — we don't know who would star — but I can see Waititi's gonzo sensibilities fitting a story like this well. The pair are reportedly leaning...

Taika Waititi, Drew Pearce Team for New Big Screen ‘Judge Dredd’ Adaptation
Image
“Judge Dredd” has returned.

The popular British comic book character, who has been adapted twice for the big screen before (in 1995 with Sylvester Stallone essaying the character and again in 2012 with Karl Urban in the title role), is headed back to the theaters.

Drew Pearce, the writer of “The Fall Guy” and Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming “The Thomas Crown Affair,” is teaming with director Taika Waititi for a new iteration of the character, TheWrap has learned.

No details of the new take on the character have been revealed at this time.

Pearce and Waititi are fully on board for the new iteration of the character. The two are old friends, having both served time in the trenches at Marvel Studios – Pearce co-wrote “Iron Man 3,” directed a short for the company and wrote a script for a “Runaways” project, while Waititi directed “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Thor: Love and Thunder...

Taika Waititi set to direct new Judge Dredd movie
Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
THR reports that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is set to direct a new Judge Dredd movie, with Drew Pearce (The Fall Guy) attached to write the script. Sources told the outlet that Waititi and Pearce are both big fans of the original character created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, and have been looking for a project to work on together for years. It seems Judge Dredd is that project.

The logline for this new project is being kept under wraps, but the pitch is said to draw more inspiration from the comics than from the previous big-screen adaptations. It will lean into world-building and dark humour, but is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster. As you might expect, those involved have hopes that this project could launch a Dredd universe with sequels, spinoffs, and TV shows.

Judge Dredd has been given the big-screen treatment before.

Taika Waititi to Direct ‘Judge Dredd’ Movie
Image
Taika Waititi, the Oscar-winning filmmaker of “Jojo Rabbit” and two “Thor” movies, has set sights on his next project.

He’s attached to direct “Judge Dredd,” a feature film about the British comic book character, Variety has confirmed. Drew Pearce, known for “Fall Guy” and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” will adapt the screenplay. The project doesn’t have a studio attached and is being shopped around Hollywood.

Created in the 1970s by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Judge Dredd is a law enforcement and judicial officer in the dystopian metropolis of Mega-City One. Often a satire of American and British culture, the character has bionic eyes and is empowered to serve as judge, jury and executioner in the fascist society. He first appeared in the pages of the weekly British anthology comic “2000 Ad.”

The character made his big-screen debut in 1995’s big-budget flop “Judge Dredd,” starring Sylvester Stallone.

Taika Waititi Is the Law, Will Direct New Judge Dredd Movie
Image
Taika Waititi is probably screaming, “I Am The Law” right about now, as he’s set to direct a new live-action adaptation of Judge Dredd.

The Hollywood Reporter has it that the Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit filmmaker will bring the popular British comic creation back to the screen. Drew Pearce is writing the script. Reports say the pitch hews closely to the original comics, and will be a “fun sci-fi blockbusters that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture.”

The character has twice been adapted, once as a 1995 bid-budget flop starring Sylvester Stallone, and again as the much better received, smaller-budgeted Dredd in 2012 starring Karl Urban with a script by Alex Garland. This time around, producers are hoping to create a franchise that would be followed up by more movies and shows “across various platforms.”

Taika Waititi to Reboot Karl Urban’s 13-Year-Old Sci-Fi Cult Classic
Image
Last month, it was reported that Warner Bros. had lost the rights to Akira, effectively killing Taika Waititi's live-action adaptation for good. However, the acclaimed filmmaker has already found a replacement project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi and screenwriter Drew Pearce have teamed up for a new feature film based on the Judge Dredd comics. Plot details remain under wraps, although sources have described the pair's pitch as having taken more inspiration from the comics than the previous big-screen adaptations. The movie will be "a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture" and could serve as the first entry in a new Dredd shared universe. No studio is attached yet, but as one of the hottest packages of the year, it won't be long before someone in Hollywood snaps it up.

After a 13 Year Delay, Judge Dredd Is Back With the Help of an Oscar-Winning Marvel Veteran
Image
The judge will rule the streets again. In a surprise announcement, THR reported that a new Judge Dredd movie is in the works, and no one less than director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is attached to helm it. Details of the upcoming adaptation are yet to come, but once again the story will adapt the comic book stories created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. A release window is yet to be announced as well.

Many will consider Waititi and Dredd a match made in heaven. Per THR, the idea is to draw more from the character's comic book origins rather than the previous iterations in cinema — which starred Sylvester Stallone (Tulsa King) in 1995 and Karl Urban (The Boys) in 2012. This means that the new Judge Dredd will have a bigger focus on worldbuilding and the characteristic dark humor that will make it an entertaining blockbuster movie to watch. Will...

It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. Sources have confirmed to Deadline that Taika Waititi is attached to direct a new Judge Dredd movie from a script by Drew Pearce. Insiders say the package just went to market and no offers are out yet, but given the parties involved it should certainly get some looks.

Created by John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Dredd is a police officer stationed in the metropolis of Mega-City One, where officers are empowered to be judge, jury and executioner.
