Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be taking movie-goers back to the post-apocalyptic wasteland as envisioned by Mad Max franchise mastermind George Miller this weekend – but if you want to watch some more post-apocalyptic wasteland in the comfort of your own home tomorrow, May 24th, Shout! TV has you covered. They will be airing a marathon called Obscury Road, showing cult classic post-apocalyptic movies all day long!

The Obscury Road marathon will be airing on Shout! TV; as well as the Shout! TV app on Roku, Android, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV; and the following digital streaming platforms – Samsung TV Plus, Amazon Freevee, Local Now, Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, LG Channels, available on LG Smart TVs, Fubo, and Xumo.

Historically and annually speaking, January is a bad month for Hollywood movies. It’s a “dump month,” that time of year when the major studios offload the projects in which they have no faith.

Though their “’80s Horror” lineup would constitute enough of a Halloween push, the Criterion Channel enter October all guns blazing. The month’s lineup also includes a 19-movie vampire series running from 1931’s Dracula (English and Spanish both) to 2014’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the collection in-between including Herzog’s Nosferatu, Near Dark, and Let the Right One In. Last year’s “Universal Horror” collection returns, a 17-title Ishirō Honda retrospective has been set, and a few genre titles stand alone: Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The House of the Devil, and Island of Lost Souls.

Streaming premieres include restorations of Tsai Ming-liang’s Vive L’amour and Ed Lachman’s Lou Reed / John Cale concert film Songs for Drella; October’s Criterion editions are Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns, Bill Duke’s Deep Cover, Haxan, and My Own Private Idaho. Kathryn Bigelow’s vampire movie Near Dark – the best vampire movie released in 1987 – has been famously hard to find on streaming over the years, but we’ve learned that it’ll soon be available to stream once again this Halloween season thanks to the Criterion Channel!

Beginning October 1, Criterion’s streaming service will have the “80s Horror Collection” up for grabs, a 30-film collection that includes Near Dark among several other horror classics.

The collection includes films from Dario Argento, Kathryn Bigelow, John Carpenter, Larry Cohen, David Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, Michael Mann, Ken Russell, Paul Schrader, and more.

One of my great memories from the, put one way, debatable year of 2020 was Criterion Channel’s “’70s Horror,” a program that did what it said on the tin while offering discoveries aplenty—Texas Chain Saw next to Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Deathdream given equal prominence as The Wicker Man. It is of course a delight to see they’re picking up their own baton with next month’s “’80s Horror,” which again runs a canon-to-obscurity gamut. Scanners, Near Dark, and Prince of Darkness will of course appear, but I’d just as soon direct people to Wolfen, Society, and The Keep—which made my jaw drop just a bit, given how averse Michael Mann seems towards any exhibition of it.

Criterion have released a nifty trailer encapsulating the spooks and scares to come. Find it below, as well as the full list of titles and more on the Criterion Channel.

For this week’s home media offerings, we have only a few titles on tap for genre fans, as there are only five different titles making their way home on Tuesday. Arrow Video is showing some love to the underappreciated Dream Demon with their new Blu, and Scream Factory is resurrecting The Spider (1958) as well. If you’re into classic horror in three dimensions, you’ll definitely want to pick up the 3D Blu for House of Wax (1953) and two indie horror flicks are arriving on DVD this week as well: Wood Witch and The Haunted.

Happy Monday, everyone! Before we head into Memorial Day, we have more horror and sci-fi Blu-ray and DVD releases coming our way that should definitely keep genre fans busy for the three-day weekend. Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Blus for The Seduction, The Hunted, and the recent psychological thriller A Dark Place. Shout Select is showing Earthquake some love with their Collector’s Edition this week, and Kino Lorber has two stellar-looking Special Edition releases on their docket as well: Black Moon Rising and Bitter Moon.

Exclusive: Company’s first global foray into TV is for series from British sci-fi writer E.C. Tubb.

Kaleidoscope (Kfd) is to represent world sales on sci-fi TV series Dumarest Of Terra, which will be produced by Terry Marcel (Hawk The Slayer).

The initial series is being planned as a of 10 x 60 minute drama based on the first five books of the Dumarest saga, by British science fiction author, E.C. Tubb.

The book series charts the adventures of protagonist Earl Dumarest, who spends his life searching for clues to the location of his home world, Earth.

Dumarest has traveled so long and so far that he does not know how to return to his home planet and no-one has ever heard of it, other than as a myth or legend

The cult collection, which spanned 33 books written across more than 40 years, was translated into seven languages.

The BFI's Days of Fear and Wonder programme celebrated Star Wars Day this weekend (Saturday, December 12) to screen George Lucas's original trilogy back-to-back.

The Southbank venue played host to showings of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with special guests Paul Blake (Greedo), Garrick Hagon (Rebel pilot Biggs Darklighter), Anthony Forrest (Mos Eisley roadblock stormtrooper), Anne Skinner (script supervisor) and Harley Cokeliss (2nd Unit Director) on hand to discuss the sci-fi movies.

Lando Calrissian star Billy Dee Williams also took part in an exclusive filmed interview before Empire Strikes Back and Jabba the Hutt puppeteer Toby Philpott joined in for a post-Return of the Jedi Q&A.

★★★★☆Newly released by the BFI this week ahead of its upcoming sci-fi season, the collection Outer Space - encompassing three classics from the Children's Film Foundation, directed by Harley Cokeliss, Guy Fergusson and Ian Shand - proves why works from this British studio were so popular amongst children and remain nostalgic for today's adults. Whether you watched them in the cinema during the 1950s or later on television in the 1970s and 80s, Cff films were an intrinsic part of growing up for many British kids. Always quick to pick up on trends which would catch the attention of their young audiences, the Cff-produced works covering a wide range of subjects including space travel and alien life, as seen here.

Having managed to get about five hours sleep I woke up ready for the second day of the Fantastic Films Weekend ready for what would be my busiest day of film watching. With the likes of The Toxic Avenger, Coraline 3D and another screen talk to get through my body wanted me to go to bed but I got up anyway and made my way back knowing already that The Toxic Avenger was the dreaded UK Theatrical Cut, meaning it would be torn to shred.

For years I’ve had the region one DVD version of The Toxic Avenger, which of course is the uncut version. This meant I was interested to see what the differences would be between the two.

Joining the Fantasy Film Weekend for a second year, I knew what to expect, plenty of films and a Monday where your body feels like it wants to sleep for a whole week. The film festival is quite a rare gem in the festival calendar as it focuses not only on the new, but the classic and at times the downright strange films. This year there were Attractions such as a 70mm print of Big Trouble in Little China, Coraline 3D, The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm in Cinerama and most other films on 35mm where possible so this of course is one for the lovers of film of all types.

The first day was quite a leisurely stroll into the strange and horrific, just to ease into proceedings, but with Pieces being on the bill for the day it was sure to push up the gore value to a good level.

The National Media Museum in Bradford is, from 15th – 17th June 2012, set to play host to the 11th Fantastic Films Weekend, giving horror, fantasy and sci-fi fans in the North their annual fix of thrills and spills.

This year the festival will focus on schlock, women in horror and sci-fi, and feature a festival first – a Cinerama screening of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. Other highlights will include an evening of giallo treats new and old, family fun with Coraline 3D and live make-up demos, and a Hammer strand packed with rare and premiere Hammer screenings.

Special guests will include Renée Glynne who worked for many years as continuity/script supervisor for Hammer before going freelance. Her work includes The Nanny, Legend of the Golden Vampire and The Quatermass Xperiment, the HD premiere of which will be screened following her screentalk. The B-Movie Underground and Trash Film Festival brings their unique collection of international sleaze on Sept. 7-11 in the city of Breda in the Netherlands. Violence, gore, general grossness and perversion are, once again, near and dear to the heart of this fun fest.

From the U.S., the But Fest is screening a few modern underground classics while also celebrating a few of the old masters. Included in the lineup are Usama Alshaibi‘s mind-blowing Muslim sex worker flick Profane, Zach Clark‘s wild weekend of debauchery Vacation! and Dan Nelson & Drew Bolduc‘s over-the-top The Taint.

Plus, But is honoring Cinema of Transgression mastermind Nick Zedd with several screenings of his classic works, such as Thrust in Me, Police State and Whoregasm, as well as his recent public access TV series Electra Elf.

The Films:

Shout! Factory continues their fun line of double-bills with more Roger Corman produced B-movie goodness. If it wasn’t for the successful Death Race 2000 (here) these films wouldn’t exist, mainly because Corman was the type of producer, and in some ways still is, that would take an idea that made money – whether from others or his – and spun it a few different ways to make like-minded films. Hence, Deathsport (1978) and Battle Truck (1982) take a few notes from the previously mentioned Death Race 2000, but add a little Mad Max in for good measure, and the end results are pleasing, even you don’t mind some aimless cheese.

Deathsport is all over the place. Too many ideas, no real focus, but it manages to be a blast in its 90 minutes, because of those reasons. A thousand years into the future – it gets better – a dying bureaucrat seeks out the have nots,...

This morning I figured it was time to bust out with some cult Pa news and since I just caught up with this newly released Roger Corman double-header disc featuring two old school Pa cheese fests and it turned out to be a blast-and-a-half to watch I figured I'd plug it.

What can we say about Deathsport. The worldwide success of Death Race 2000 fueled Corman’s desire to make Deathsport, which also stars David Carradine. It was not a direct sequel and not nearly as well conceived, but it's enough of a thematic follow-up. There's lots of motorcycle mayham and awesome scifi matte paintings that look totally fake, but I personally love that stuff.

U.K. retail giant Tesco is releasing its film adaptation of a Jackie Collins novel. "Paris Connections" will be the company's first foray into filmmaking, with a straight-to-dvd that will go on sale exclusively in its stores.

The film is Tesco's first project, with the hopes of making two more films this year. The company also signed up authors Philip Pullman, Judy Blume and Felix Francis. Blume's "Tiger Eyes" is being eyed as Tesco's next film.

Director Harley Cokeliss is working on with stars Nicole Steinwedell, Charles Dance, Hudson Leick, Anthony Delon, Trudie Styler, Anouk Aimee, and Caroline Chikezie for the film.

According to the Guardian, a straight-to-dvd movie sold exclusively in Tesco is the brainchild of Ileen Maisel, a former New Line Cinema producer. The idea is to take well-known authors and adapt their bestselling novels into "video books."...

When deciding on a movie to watch, you are hard pressed to go wrong when picking a film adorned with the title of “Roger Corman Cult Classics” right at the top of the case.

The genuine geniuses over at Shout! Factory have been slowly but surely knocking it out of the ballpark with each subsequent release of this massively expansive set, detailing cult classics like Death Race 2000, and rarely seen gems like Galaxy Of Terror.

The series has produced DVDs that not only have fantastic transfers, but also rather expansive special features, ranging from hour long documentaries, to interviews with Corman himself.

However, Shout! Factory may have finally hit a little bump in the road.

The newest release in the ongoing series, a special double feature featuring the sci-fi films Deathsport and Battle Truck (a.k.a. the best title in film history), aren’t truly bad releases. That said,...

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.

The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.

Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009.
