Slasher movies from the 1980s are my favorite type of movie to watch, and ranking highly as one of my favorites from that era is the 1983 classic Sleepaway Camp (watch it Here). So I’m excited to hear that Encyclopocalypse Publications has teamed with author B.R. Flynn to bring us a Sleepaway Camp novelization that will be available in trade paperback, retro mass market paperback, and Ebook editions as of August 26th. Copies are available for pre-order Here.
Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, Sleepaway Camp has the following synopsis: After a terrible boating accident killed her family, shy Angela Baker went to live with her eccentric Aunt Martha and her cousin Ricky. This summer, Martha decides to send them both to Camp Arawak, a place to enjoy the great outdoors. Shortly after their arrival, a series of bizarre and violent “accidents” begin to claim the lives of various campers.

Before her long and loving marriage to Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker had an eight-year-long relationship with Robert Downey Jr. They met when they were eighteen on the set of the movie Firstborn in 1984. Both Downey Jr. and Parker were popular celebrities of the Brat Pack era.
Firstborn is a coming-of-age drama that explores the life of teenager Jake Livingston, played by Christopher Collet. He is forced to grow up quickly when his mother begins to date and gets drawn into the life of a drug dealer, Sam.
Both Downey Jr. and Parker played minor roles in the film, as friends of Jake in high school. The two would go on to date for nearly seven years, becoming one of the era’s most beloved celebrity couples. Besides sparking the real-life romance of Downey Jr. and Parker, the film did not make much impact in Hollywood.

Marshall Brickman, the banjo-playing writer and director who shared an Academy Award with his frequent collaborator Woody Allen for their Annie Hall screenplay, has died. He was 85.
Brickman died Friday in Manhattan, his daughter Sophie Brickman told The New York Times.
On his own, Brickman wrote and directed Simon (1980), a quirky comedy about a psychology professor (Alan Arkin) brainwashed into believing he’s from outer space; Lovesick (1983), featuring Alec Guinness as the ghost of Sigmund Freud who offers relationship advice to a psychiatrist (Dudley Moore); and The Manhattan Project (1986), about a high school student (Christopher Collet) who builds a nuclear weapon for a science fair project.
And in 2001, he helmed an adaptation of Christopher Durang’s play Sister Mary Explains It All, starring Annie Hall herself, Diane Keaton, for Showtime.
Brickman also teamed with Rick Elice to pen the Tony-nominated book for the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, and they wrote...

Director Rob Savage’s adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Boogeyman (read our review Here) just had a solid opening weekend of $20 million, and there could be more King adaptations in Savage’s future. If so, he has already picked out the story he wants to bring to the screen next. It’s a story that already received a mini-series adaptation back in 1995, but that one didn’t go over well. It’s the novella The Langoliers, which was featured in King’s story collection Four Past Midnight.
Written and directed by Tom Holland (the one who made Child’s Play and Fright Night), the mini-series adaptation of The Langoliers told the following story: On a red-eye flight to Boston from Los Angeles, 10 people wake up to a shock. All of the other passengers and crew have vanished. When they try to contact the ground they make no connections.

In the fall of 1985 a teen drama came to theaters titled Firstborn. There was only one problem. It wasn't a teen drama. In large part it focused on adults and their interpersonal relationships. This film was in many ways a near Academy Award winning look at the dynamics of a single mother, her kids, and what happens when her new boyfriend effects this close knit family. Quite simply, Firstborn was a very real film about a very real issue, that somehow sidetracked itself when it became a film that it wasn't. What happened you asked?
Somehow, amidst this deeply layered tale, Firstborn became a story of drugs, car chases, and a David and Goliath-like battle in a living room that would be bespeak the independent films of the 1990s. You know which ones I am talking about. Those films that didn't quite need, demand or even deserve a theatrical release,...

The child actor first starred in “Firstborn” when he was 13 years old but died before his 2011 film “Decisions” was released. “Firstborn” (1984) Corey Haim had his film debut in “Firstborn” when he was just 13 years old. The film starred Teri Garr, Peter Weller, Christopher Collet, Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. “Secret Admirer” (1985) Haim starred as Jeff in the 1985 romantic comedy about a love letter left in a locker that turns everyone’s world upside down. Directed by David Greenwalt, the film starred C. Thomas Howell, Lori Loughlin, Kelly Preston, Fred Ward and Geoffrey Blake. “Silver Bullet” (1985) Corey Haim...

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

From thrillers to sci-fi to horror, here's our pick of 20 films from 1986 that surely deserve a bit more love...
A fascinating year for film, 1986. It was a time when a glossy, expensive movie about handsome men in planes could dominate the box-office, sure (that would be Top Gun). But it was also a year when Oliver Stone went off with just $6m and came back with Platoon, one of the biggest hits of the year both financially and in terms of accolades. It was also a period when the British movie industry was briefly back on its feet, resulting in a new golden age of great films - one or two of them are even on this list.
As ever, there were certain films that, despite their entertainment value or genuine brilliance in terms of movie making, somehow managed to slip through the net. So to redress the balance a little,...

I don't avoid any genre of cinema, but horror is my blind spot. I have favorite horror films, but the genre is so rich and diverse, and I feel like I haven't even come close to scratching the surface. Thankfully, I'm now lucky enough to be working alongside two horror aficionados, Evan and Perri. Since October means Halloween and therefore horror, we decided to do a four-entry feature where they would decide on four horror films I would have to watch and then report back with my thoughts. They would then reply with why they chose the film, their thoughts on it, and the movie's legacy. Hopefully, if you're as ignorant of horror films as I am, you'll join in on the lesson. Hit the jump for our thoughts on the first assignment, 1983's Sleepaway Camp. [Note: To encourage discussion, the comments section can contain spoilers.] The Trailer: The Plot: Eight years after a tragic speedboat accident, Angela (Felissa Rose...

Cover your ears and hide your eyes, horror fans. Another classic is getting the reboot treatment. This time, its sexually confused slasher Angela who is being updated for a new generation, as New Line Executive Jeff Katz sets up a series based on the 1983 thriller Sleepaway Camp.
Katz has optioned the remake rights from the original movie's rights holders, which include Angela herself, actress Felissa Rose, the original's writer/director-turned-lawyer Robert Hiltzik and original producer Michele Tatosian. They will all return as producers of this new version, which should help lend the film some credibility.
The story follows the summer camp exploits of a young girl, tormented and bullied by her so-called friends. This results in a torrential blood bath of terror that is memorable for its truly shocking (at least at the time) twist ending. This new version will be updated for a modern setting. And it promises to...

A Two Coreys Halloween: The Essential Horror Movies of Haim and Feldman
On October 29, just two days before Halloween, St. Martin's Press will release the long-awaited Corey Feldman biography Coreyography: A Memoir. It is a must-read for any fan, as it delves deep into the trials and tribulations of this actor's young life in Hollywood. Some of it is funny, some of it is heartbreaking and a great big portion of it is truly scary.
In the book, Feldman talks in great length about his best friend Corey Haim. In the coming weeks, you'll hear a lot about what happened to the two teenagers behind closed doors, and a lot of it's not that pleasant. Instead of dwelling on that in our own review, we'd rather look at the work Haim and Corey Feldman have left behind. Specifically, in honor of the season, their horror movies. The pair met on...

While they may not necessarily be the villains and get all the glory, there's something to be said for the douchebag characters of the horror genre- they often add to the drama of any given situation, they generally complicate things and they make it oh, so fun to hate them.
That being said, I thought it might be kind of fun to look back at some of my favorite douchebag characters of the horror genre- past and present. The only rule? They aren't the film's "big bad." Be forewarned, though: If you haven't seen some of these films, this countdown may get a little spoiler-y for you.
So, in the immortal words of Kanye West, "Let's have a toast for the douchebags" and check out some of this writer's favorite unsavory characters in the horror genre of all time.
