Horror Movies That Made Actors Physically Ill
Image
Horror movies are often intense experiences, sometimes not just for the audience but also for the cast and crew making them behind-the-scenes. From maintaining raw emotions on high for effective performances to less than ideal filming conditions, making a horror movie can be grueling work, to the point that some actors occasionally regret starring in them.

On top of the heightened rigors of the job, the attention to gruesome detail in capturing such visceral material can literally make the actors on set sick to their stomachs. There are numerous horror movies that went so hard that they made the actors involved physically ill during the production. This ranges from the physical extremes of method acting and abusively megalomaniacal directors to actors becoming severely sick during filming. However, no matter the ailment, the show must go on, often with those afflicted actors' performances in the final film. Here are the biggest...

Image
Horror fans may be familiar with the name Jason Paul Collum. He has also written the book Assault of the Killer Bs: Interviews With 20 Cult Film Actresses – and this month, a new Jason Paul Collum book has been published. It’s called They Made How Many?! (Mostly) American Horror Franchises of the 20th Century, and it’s a 654 page look at the many horror sequels that were made in the 1900s. Copies can be purchased at This Link.

Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II (1974)
Halloween III: Season Of The Witch – The Inside Story Of A Cult Classic
Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II (1974)
In the modern era of movie making, where the franchise is king, sequels haven’t just become a byproduct of box office success, they’ve become an inevitability.

Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the world of horror. Deliver 90 minutes plus of scares to large swathes of the cinema-going public and the chances are an order for seconds will be up before the original movie has even left multiplexes.

Blame it on market forces and the fact movie-making is fundamentally a money-making enterprise, but the results have proven gruesome for fans, in every sense of the word.

While critically-lauded sequels like The Godfather Part II and The Empire Strikes Back were the result of careful planning and expert execution, horror sequels have, by and large, been about studios striking while the iron is hot.

The result is a series of largely repetitive follow-ups that crank up the gore to...

Linnea Quigley
Exclusive: We Chat With Original Scream Queen Brinke Stevens
Linnea Quigley
As a child of the 1980s, I raised myself on a steady diet of terrible zero-budget cable slasher flicks. I would scour the TV Guide to check out what was playing that night, and keep my fingers crossed that my parents would go to bed before my movie would start, so I could sneak into the living room and watch it (at a very, very low volume, lest it wake them.) Brinke Stevens, one of the three "original" scream queens (along with Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer) was a frequent star of these cheap little flicks. With over 150 titles to her credit, picking out even a handful of her most well-known credits is tough, but let's try. Slumber Party Massacre, Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-a-Rama, and Haunting Fear all spring to mind. After over 30 years in the horror industry, she, Linnea, and Michelle finally have a documentary, Screaming in High Heels.

Exclusive Interview: Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer - Screaming in High Heels!
To help promote the release of Screaming in High Heels (review), a look into the lives and careers of Scream Queen legends Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer, Breaking Glass Pictures provided an opportunity for us to have a chat with the documentary’s leading ladies.

Check it out below, and be sure to purchase Screaming in High Heels through Evil Shop below!

Can you tell me a bit about the genesis of Screaming in High Heels? Did director Jason Paul Collum approach each of you with the idea of featuring you in a documentary about the Scream Queen era?

Brinke Stevens - A few years ago, Jason and I co-produced a documentary called Something to Scream About, which featured popular actresses like Julie Strain and Debbie Rochon. However, it didn't include Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer, which disappointed some fans. Jason Collum, being such a longtime fan himself,...

Scream Queens Take Center Stage in Trailer for the Documentary Screaming in High Heels
Wanna know what it takes to become a scream queen? Let Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer, three of the original scream queens of cinema, show you the way. Check out a trailer for Jason Paul Collum’s “Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era”, which, as you might expect given the title, traces the rise and fall of the scream queen era as seen through the eyes of Quigley, Stevens and Bauer. This is a great documentary … if you’re into smut! Three girls living in Los Angeles, CA, in the 1980s found cult fame when they “accidentally” transitioned from models to B-movie actresses, coinciding with the major direct-to-video horror film boom of the era. Known as “The Terrifying Trio,” Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre) and Michelle Bauer (The Tomb), headlined upwards of ten films per year,...

The Changing B-movie World and Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures. Director/writer: Jason Paul Collum. Cast: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era is a documentary that follows three "Scream Queens" and their careers primarily through the '80s and into the '90s. Michelle Bauer, Linnea Quigley and Brinke Stevens are the three actresses covered. Their hay day came in the late '80s when the collapse of the drive-in theatre was replaced by the portability of the VHS tape. They each made dozens of films. And, each actress drew a cadre of horror and b-movie fans. Their rise was only short lived as mega-video stories such as Blockbuster refused to stock non-mainstream films. However, Screaming in High Heels covers many of the highlights and challenges of their illustrious careers. Director Jason Paul Collum...

Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era (2011)
Directed by: Jason Paul Collum

Featuring: Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, David DeCoteau, Fred Olen Ray, Ken Hall, Ted Newsom, Jay Richardson, Richard Gabai

Screaming in High Heels comes from the devoted mind of journalist and filmmaker Jason Paul Collum, whose interest in all things Slumber Party Massacre led him to become a fascinated fan of women who star in horror movies. In Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era, Collum details the horror movie careers of the three women who coined the phrase “Scream Queen”: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer.

Collum is a great storyteller, and it’s evident from his previous documentary on Scream Queens, Something to Scream About, that he’s extremely interested in these women’s vocations as a phenomenon of horror fandom. Screaming in High Heels isn’t about Linnea, Brinke, and Michelle as...

It's Ladies Night in New Anthology Film 'Shy of Normal' and Documentary 'Screaming in High Heels'
"Hey, somebody get some light over here; Trash is taking off her clothes again." I remember those words like it was yesterday. And I should; I watched that scene of Linnea Quigley disrobing enough times to render my VHS copy of The Return of the Living Dead basically unwatchable. At least for that minute or so of the film. And it's with loving memories like this one that we celebrate our favorite scream queens in two new projects dropping this fall.

Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era follows the careers of three of the best -- Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Brinke Stevens -- in all their shrill glory.

But wait! True to '80s excess, we have more! Yet another project featuring a couple of our favorite ladies of low-budget horror is on the horizon. On November 15th Tempe DVD will release...

Trailer premiere for Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era
Without the beautiful “Scream Queen” trio of Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer – the term Late Night Classics would probably not exist. Fangoria got the early word on the premiere of this must-see documentary, as well as the trailer and poster.

“The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era (roughly 1986 – 1994) and the home video boom (roughly 1984 – 1994) is documented and more specifically follows the careers of Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer and their most common cohorts Fred Olen Ray, David DeCoteau, Jay Richardson (actor), Ken Hall (writer), and Richard Gabai (actor) with additional input by Ted Newsom (director) and Jason Paul Collum (who also directs this doc).”

“Screaming In High Heels will have its world premiere on Saturday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Chicago’s Flashback Weekend of Horror, which takes place at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Rosemont, Il). Collum and Quigley will...

Jason Paul Collum's 'Screaming In High Heels' Trailer: Finally, Someone Is Doing Justice To The Real Scream Queens
Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer are the focus of horror fan/filmmaker/gentleman scholar Jason Paul Collum's new documentary Screaming in High Heels.

Jason Paul Collum has long made a career, of sorts, of understanding the women who we call Scream Queens. His prior documentary, Something to Scream About, featured interviews with a range of actresses with full careers in horror such as Debbie Rochon, Julie Strain, and Felissa Rose, and last year he made a documentary about the woman-directed Slumber Party Massacre series.

Screaming in High Heels is his new film, which focuses on what are usually called the Big Three, the "original" scream queens - Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer, and their rise to fame on the video horror circuit beginning in the 1980s. These three women, the first Ever to be called "scream queens," have starred in literally hundreds of horror films,...

Trailer for documentary "Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era"
Brinke Stevens (left), Linnea Quigley (center) and

Michelle Bauer (right) Jason Paul Collum, the director behind such efforts as October Moon & November Son, has unleashed a trailer to his highly anticipated horror documentary "Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era" which traces legendary scream queens Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl O Rama) and Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers) during the video boom of the 1980's.

The three ladies (and a small group of energetic filmmakers) headlined upwards of 10 low budget horror films per year, fending off men in rubber monster suits, pubescent teen boys, and deadly showers. As a result of their unintended cult fame, they were flown all over the world, dined with President Regan, and built mini-empires of their own. Then it all came crashing down. Trailer: Screaming in High Heels Documentary
Scream queens of the '80s served sundry purposes. They were victims. Killers. Video box cover vixens. Horror magazine pin-ups. Fodder for a young man's libido. And now, they're the subject of Jason Paul Collum's upcoming documentary Screaming in High Heels: Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era . Jason alerted us to his Kickstarter page and while we don't necessarily use Shock's space to serve as Kickstarter promotion, we'll make an exception. Jason assures us this project is nearly done. He's simply seeking some completion funds from there, it's anyone's guess. Hopefully, distribution won't be far behind. Here's a sizzle reel he cut together. You'll find the project's page here .

From Jason Paul Collum, director of October Moon and November Son, comes a documentary detailing the rise and fall of the 80's Scream Queen era in which his mentor Brinke Stevens (Haunting Fear) will be partaking with a bevy of familiar faces from the 80's horror era in:

November Son shines in the light of October Moon
Critically praised and one of the first gay-themed thrillers, October Moon was released theatrically on September 25, 2005 and hit DVD on Valentine’s Day 2006, the film was an immediate success. With that success in hand, director Jason Paul Collum brings us the sequel, October Moon 2: November Son.

Referred to as “Oddly gothic…creepy fun…” (Instinct) and “A cut above most independent horror films…” (Film Monthly) October Moon 2: November Son holds the distinct novelty of being the first gay-horror film sequel! This DVD edition contains an all-new 4 page full-color insert by writer, director producer Jason Paul Collum (Something To Scream About). The entire original cast returns (even the dead ones) and are joined by Scream Queen supreme Debbie Rochon (Witchouse 3: Demon Fire), soap star Robyn Griggs (One Life To Live) and recording artist Sacha Sacket (Dante’s Cove), making his screen debut.

The title was an immediate success and...

Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer are given their due in Scream Queen documentary
Anyone who reads this site knows my love for 80′s horror films is beyond huge, especially the ones that starred the sexy trio of Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer. Brinke and I did a retrospective on Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama when I was just starting out with my Late Night Classics column. Documentary filmmaker Jason Paul Collum embraces his love for the same type of cinema with Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era. Click here to visit the official Facebook page.

Fango has the scoop:

Titled Screaming In High Heels: The Rise & Fall Of The Scream Queen Era, Collum’s movie takes a historical approach to the phenomenon, tracking the rise of actresses like Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer (pictured above, and below with Collum) in the wake of the passing of the drive-in era,...

New "Scream Queens" Documentary Wants You to Share Your Voice!
Jason Paul Collum, director of the doc Something to Scream About, is at it again. He's currently working on Screaming In High Heels: The Rise & Fall Of The Scream Queen Era. Man, that's a mouthful. The doc will track the rise of actresses like Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer and Brinke Stevens as the drive-in era phased out and the home video industry boomed (and then fell apart)....

Fitting that this info is circulating during Women in Horror month and any excuse to watch legendary scream queens is a great thing but Collum is taking it one step further. Collum wants horror fans out there to send in video 'love letters' to be included in the documentary. Clips should be under three minutes but there's not much time to put them together.

Collum says through his Facebook page "Create a video telling/showing any or all of these original Scream Queens How,...

James Reviews The Slumber Party Massacre Trilogy [DVD Review]
Let’s go back to the 1980′s. Ronald Reagan was president. Our economy was in the shitter. AIDS was making news as a real threat to society. And the slasher film was making tons of money in the box office and at home with a new fangled contraption called a VHS player. Halloween. Friday the 13th. Nightmare on Elm Street. Those are but a few names that get thrown around when people speak about the slasher genre. But one series that tends to get forgotten or mixed up in the mess is The Slumber Party Massacre Trilogy. And that’s a sad fact, considering these films are loved by many horror fans and thanks to Shout! Factory, they are newly remastered and available for the world to buy now. But do they still match up to their brethren in the genre?

In 1982, Roger Corman wanted to cash in on the slasher craze,...

Interview with director Jason Paul Collum (October Moon, October Moon 2: November Son)
Jason Paul Collum is the genre director of several films and was featured as Bachelor of the Month in Instinct magazine. He is mentored by legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens who starred in two of his more popular efforts October Moon and its sequel November Son. Both of these films were refreshingly different films in the genre as they were gay psychological horror thrillers. We had the chance to ask him a few questions about his career and these films. Here is what he had to say:

For horror fans who may be unfamiliar with you, who is Jason Paul Collum and what is he all about?

I'm a guy with my hands in a lot of pots. I write, direct, produce and very occasionally act (a loose term) in mostly low-budget, independent films. I've worked on projects with budgets as low as $500 and as high as $150,000. I even worked...

Gay Of The Dead 12: Writer/director/actor Alan Rowe Kelly: Part 1
I had never seen any of Alan Rowe Kelly’s films until he contacted me—literally moments after posting my first Gay Of The Dead blog. And yes, that is Alan in the photo to the left. Don’t worry, we’ll get to that later.

Kelly’s opening salvo to me was the grisly, intense and controversial A Far Cry From Home segment from the recently wrapped Gallery Of Fear anthology, which he co-wrote, co-directed and produced for his Southpaw Pictures. From there I jumped back to his first feature, I’LL Bury You Tomorrow, a loopy, sprawling, bloody feature that manages to wind storylines of seven main characters into one big crazy fest. After that, I popped in The Blood Shed, which starts off with a preteen kid being yanked in half and just gets more insane (see: awesome) from there.

After watching Kelly’s films and chatting...

Gay Of The Dead 10: November Son’s Brinke Stevens and Sacha Sacket.
For November Son (available on DVD April 14), the sequel to the gay thriller October Moon, writer/director Jason Paul Collum worked with both ends of the genre spectrum, the seasoned vet (Brinke Stevens) and the first-film newbie (Sacha Sacket).

Stevens, who reprises the role of “Nancy” in November Son, has over 100 acting credits. If you are a fan of the genre, you know Stevens even if you’ve never seen one of her films. By all accounts one of the nicest and most accommodating actresses to work with, Stevens weathered the “Girl in the Shower” storm of her early films and has come out the other side with nuanced performances in films like Mommy and October Moon. At an age when most B-movie queens fade into real estate careers, Stevens keeps racking up the roles, and she doesn’t have to take off her top to do it.

Sacket has...

A bunch o’ horror DVD covers emerge
The covers for several assorted DVDs we’ve told you about over the past few weeks have recently cropped up, and we figured we’d show them to you all in one place (i.e., below the cut). A new title has come up as well: Lost Treasure Of The Grand Canyon, a Sci Fi Channel creature feature that Anchor Bay releases May 26.

In that movie, Shannen Doherty and Michael Shanks star as two of a group of archaeological researchers who travel deep into the titular natural landmark in search of the father of Doherty’s character. There they encounter not only an ancient tribe that likes to dabble in human sacrifice, but a mythical monster that also enjoys snacking on people. With no special features announced, the disc retails for $19.97.

October Moon sequel gets distribution; filmmaker talks
Indie writer/director/producer Jason Paul Collum gave Fango the scoop that November Son, the sequel to his psychochiller October Moon, has been acquired for DVD release by Ariztical Entertainment. A spring 2009 disc release is being planned.

Set two years after the events of October Moon, the new movie centers on the survivors of that gay-themed stalker scenario as a couple of new characters enter their lives, with psychologically and physically destructive results. Collum reveals that the complete ensemble of actors from the previous film returned—even if their October characters died. “We got everyone back, which is a really amazing thing on a low-budget film,” he tells Fango. “It's rare, especially today, to have an entire cast come in for a sequel at this level, but everyone was so happy with the results of October Moon that no one hesitated.”

Those performers include Sean Michael Lambrecht, Jeff Dylan Graham,...
