“He Runs It Like an Indie Film”: ‘The Odyssey’ Star Teases Christopher Nolan’s Approach to Adapting the Classic
Image
Earlier this year, the Fates rapidly began to weave the threads that would bring us yet another project from the mind of Oscar-winning filmmaker and director, Christopher Nolan, with the retelling of Homer's tale of the mighty Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan's upcoming mythic action epic, The Odyssey, has since greatly expanded its cast with a plethora of stars, including John Wick's John Leguizamo joining the eagerly anticipated film. It is as large an undertaking as any Nolan has ever ventured into in his illustrious career. With huge expectations, some of Hollywood's brightest stars on the call sheet, and most definitely an enormous budget. Leguizamo reveals that Nolan still manages to make the entire production feel like an independent film.

“Dude, you know the thing is, okay, he’s got a crazy budget," Leguizamo said in a recent interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

10 Shows Like Sons of Anarchy With No Redeemable Characters
Image
Sons of Anarchy features many characters who are both fan favorites but also irredeemable. Set in a world of crime and chaos, bad situations lead to even worse choices. Before anyone realizes, things are too far gone to be saved.

Shows with no redeemable characters have their own charm. They tend to tackle dark and forbidden topics like revenge, cannibalism and war. Many shows have irredeemable characters like Jax. They may have done one really bad thing, or they have done several over the course of the entire series. From House of the Dragon to Yellowjackets to Breaking Bad, these pitch-black and morally grey characters have caused fans to think about the damning choices they made.

Walter White Is Far Gone in Breaking Bad

As Breaking Bad's protagonist, Walter White is a sympathetic character, similar to Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy. However, throughout the course of the crime series,...

Dominique Review: Oksana Orlan's Phenomenal in Hardcore Action Thriller
Image
Oksana Orlan, a statuesque fashion model turned actress, writer, and producer, will kick your ass and break a foot doing it in Dominique, an absolutely ferocious action movie with stunning plot twists. The film initially seems like another mindless and forgettable VOD entry we've seen countless times. That expectation changes dramatically when a razor-sharp first act goes in a truly shocking direction. Every character is fair game once ruthless and sadistic baddies are unleashed. Steel yourself for shock, awe, and heartbreak. There are no sacred cows or boundaries here.

In Colombia's La Guajira desert, cackling goons from the vicious De La Cruz cartel race towards their latest conquest in a red Jeep. They've shot down a plane presumed to belong to a rival drug gang. Hector (David M Sandoval Jr.) cautiously approaches the wreckage. The front of the plane is still intact. He opens the door and motions his men...

10 TV Characters The Shows Didnt Know What To Do With
Image
Sometimes, TV shows introduce characters who seem fundamental to the story, but it becomes clear that the writers aren't sure what to do with them after their initial storyline. The result is often that the TV show will repeat the same story many times, focusing on one character. Maybe said character will eventually be written out of the show when the actor or writers have had enough, but they may be needed for one particular future storyline.

Some TV show love interests that were suddenly dropped and great female TV characters that deserved better ended up in these circumstances because creativity had run out concerning their arcs. Great TV shows should effectively use all their characters, at least providing a reason for them to be shelved for a while if screen time is limited. However, it is hard to feel like some shows did not waste characters when they are...

‘Little Dixie’ (2023) Movie Review: Classic Hero Re-invented in Neon Colors
Image
Little Dixie is a thriller movie directed by John Swab starring Frank Grillo. With Eric Dane and Annabeth Gish.

Frank Grillo impersonates a man that navigates between two seas and between borders, a classic anti-hero who due to the circumstances has to become a hero to save his daughter, Little Dixie, whom the movie is named after.

This is a movie of black and white contrasts with grey areas in which everything happens in dark tones with even darker characters. This film which has its source in the construction of classic cinema to, in a authentic and brutal style, destroy and separate itself from its genre.

In this film, the director, John Swab knows how to impose his own style.

Review of Little Dixie Beau Knapp in Little Dixie (2023)

Frank Grillo & Eric Dane in Bland Revenge Thriller 'Little Dixie' Trailer
Image
"Don't look so shocked. Naive doesn't look good one you." Paramount Movies has unveiled an official trailer for an action crime thriller titled Little Dixie, another of these useless direct-to-video action / crime films they're churning out way too often these days. Ex-Special Forces Operative Doc facilitates a fragile truce between the Governor and Cartel, trading prosecutorial leniency for finance. With no more truce, Doc is left to fend for himself and protect the one untainted thing in his life: his daughter, Little Dixie. So uh, does that sound interesting to anyone? The film stars Frank Grillo, Eric Dane, Beau Knapp, Annabeth Gish, Peter Greene, Thomas Dekker, Mercedes Mason, and Maurice Compte. Yeah this definitely looks as forgettable as it sounds. As much as I used to enjoy Frank Grillo, he is now doing way too many of these boring action flicks and always playing the same character over and over.

‘Law & Order: Svu’ EPs Promise Rollins & Carisi’s ‘Love Will Prevail’ in Season 24
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
Law & Order: Svu Season 24’s second episode finds Benson in the Bronx for a sex-crimes case involving gang activity. As she tangles with the unit’s chief (Maurice Compte) over jurisdiction, she notices how skillfully his detective Grace Muncy empathizes with a young female victim. Impressed, says exec producer David Graziano, “Benson brings her into the Svu.” Mariska Hargitay herself suggested an emotional arc exploring “how Benson looks inward to recognize her trauma” — including her torture by psychopath William Lewis and perceived abandonment by Stabler — “and heal herself,” says fellow EP Julie Martin. The goal? “To become a better captain, friend and mother, and possibly consider a relationship.” Meanwhile, Martin predicts “bumps” for Det. Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Ada Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) but says, “Their love will prevail.” Still, Giddish is departing this season. Image

The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunners are promising some special focus on Olivia Benson in Season 24.

After already teasing developments in a relationship between Benson and Elliot Stabler, showrunner David Graziano and head writer Julie Martin share how Benson will face her trauma throughout her life and how to handle the future.

They also shared insight on how a new detective joins the Svu team and what comes after the big Law & Order crossover that begins the season.

There’s also how Benson will deal with the departure of one of her key detectives.

These add to the issues of Benson with her former partner Stabler and preparing for other dark cases.

With a few weeks until the Season 24 premiere, this promises more fun for the drama as Benson looks to be in a wringer for the year.

‘Law & Order: Svu’ Showrunner: Season 24 Will Be About Olivia Benson’s ‘Healing and Deep Trauma’
Warren Leight
David Graziano, who takes over showrunning duties on “Law & Order: Svu” from longtime executive producer Warren Leight, told TheWrap that Season 24 will be all about “healing and deep trauma” for Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), who’s been put through the wringer over the last two decades on the NBC show.

Graziano is thrilled to be working with Hargitay, who agreed it was time to deal with Benson’s considerable losses over the years. He’s also glad to be reunited with Octavio Pisano — Graziano gave the actor who joined “Svu” last season as Detective Joe Velasco his first big break on the show “Coyote.”

TheWrap spoke to Graziano and fellow executive producer Julie Martin ahead of the Season 24 premiere on September 22 as part of our Fall TV Preview. (Note: This interview was conducted before the news Kelli Giddish will depart at the end of the upcoming season.)

American Sicario (2021)
First American-Born Drug Lord in Mexico in 'American Sicario' Trailer
American Sicario (2021)
"It's a whole new game these days." "It looks like the same game to me..." Saban Films has debuted the trailer for an indie crime thriller titled American Sicario, from filmmaker Raja Collins. The synopsis for this makes it sound like a twist on American Gangster and Sicario, about a crime boss in Mexico originally from America. Go figure. I guess putting Sicario in the title of your film is always a selling point. Based on the true story of America's most dangerous drug trafficker - it's about the American gangster Erik Vasquez, played by Philippe A. Haddad, who is scheming to become the top dog in the Mexican underworld, only to find himself making enemies out of both the powerful cartels and his own allies. This also stars Maurice Compte, Maya Stojan, Jaylen Moore, Johnny Rey Diaz, & Danny Trejo. Unfortunately, this trailer makes the film look extra dumb, as...

‘The Vandal’ Director Eddie Alcazar On How His Immigrant Heritage Inspired Him To Take Chances — Cannes
Image
Eddie Alcazar is gearing up to make his Cannes debut with the short film The Vandal on Thursday night, a long way away from his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was raised by a single mother of Bolivian heritage. She will be one of many honored guests attending the film’s world premiere where executive producer Darren Aronofsky will present their collaboration.

A modest Alcazar told Deadline he’s not sure how he ended up on the Requiem for a Dream director’s radar, but his support, and that of mentor and collaborator Steven Soderbergh, has allowed him to continue realizing his dreams.

But Alcazar’s career almost went in a totally different direction.

“At an early age, I was always an artist but I didn’t understand how to make money doing it. So I ended up getting into visual effects and 3-D which helped me earn...

Steven Soderbergh Boards Feature Adaptation of Directors’ Fortnight Pic ‘The Vandal’ (Exclusive)
Image
Filmmaker/producer Steven Soderbergh is on board to executive produce a feature-length adaptation of buzzy Directors’ Fortnight short film “The Vandal,” Variety can reveal.

Directed by American helmer Eddie Alcazar, the Quinzaine-premiering film — which is presented by filmmaker/producer Darren Aronofsky — is being tipped as an early contender for the best animated short Oscar. It stars Bill Duke and uses both stop-motion animation and live action in a unique process. Alcazar coins it “meta-scope,” a visual technique where “the closer you get to a subject, the more real it becomes,” he explains.

Set in a world not unlike mid-20th century America, Duke stars in the film as Harold, whose tormented search for peace from traumatic loss results in an unexpectedly destructive awakening after he undergoes a lobotomy. When the procedure “turns his mind inside out” and his great love is suddenly gone, Harold’s search intensifies.
