Unlikely to slow down the prolific streak at any point, Johnnie To has announced one of his next projects: Election 3, a follow-up to his beloved 2005 and 2006 actioners that’s expected to commence shooting in 2018. If that seems far away, or as if he has a weird habit of announcing projects, keep in mind that two other films are in active development, with his newest, Three, expected to premiere this year. And bear in mind that, while the screenplay is “almost finished,” it’s also “rather long” — so long that there’s the question of what section he’ll even use, and thus if star Louis Koo would return for a third go-round. Regardless, we await more. [THR]
THR also tell us David Wain, who most would consider the American Johnnie To, will reunite with Netflix (following Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) for his next endeavor. While its subject...

The modern box office is filled with sequels and reboots, and now even animated franchises are getting their own spinoffs, but can they be just as funny?
The Madagascar series has proved to be hugely popular since its debut in 2005, with the four penguins - Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico - standing out as some of the most loved minor characters.
Following on from their own Nickelodeon spinoff TV series - which has a separate continuity from the films in case you were intrigued - the four heroes embark on their own adventure away from their Madagascar friends and, surprisingly, it works.

First, let's state the obvious and get it out of the way. This is a crass piece of corporate product, an animation studio working more as an IP farm than as a storytelling unit, and it exists so that Dreamworks Animation can continue to wring money out of the "Madagascar" franchise. It is a perfect example of marketing driving the machine. It's also a profoundly silly movie that really isn't even trying to play by the conventional rules of family animation. They nod to creating a sentimental arc between Private (Christopher Knights) and Skipper (Tom McGrath), but they don't dwell on it, and they handle it with a fairly deft touch. The main goal of the movie is just to be ridiculous, and it does that in spades. The film starts with the penguins in their natural habitat, being filmed by a documentary film crew complete with the actual Werner Herzog narrating.

It puts “Penguins,” a spin-off the studio's “Madagascar” movies and Nickelodeon TV series, up against the Warner Bros. comedy sequel “Horrible Bosses 2.” That's also one week after “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” debuts. “Penguins of Madagascar” is directed by Simon J. DreamWorks Animation is currently developing a new animated film called Penguins of Madagascar, which, if you couldn't already tell, will focus on the penguins from the Madagascar franchise.
They've cast Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich to voice characters in the film. According to The Wrap, "Malkovich will voice the film's charming villain, while Cumberbatch will voice a high-ranking animal CIA agent hot on his trail."
The movie is being directed by Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) from a script by Michael Colton and John Aboud. It's set to be released on March 27th, 2015, and I'm sure it will be fun.

DreamWorks Animation is filling out the cast of its upcoming animated feature Penguins of Madagascar, and in doing so they have brought aboard two of the most gifted actors out there. Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich, according to The Wrap, are now set to lend their voices to characters in the new animated feature. The movie is being directed by Simon J. Smith, who last helmed 2007's Bee Movie, and is getting a script from Michael Colton and John Aboud. While there don't appear to be any plot details around, Malkovich is reportedly playing "the film's charming villain," while Cumberbatch will be "a high-ranking animal CIA agent hot on his trail." The article doesn't mention what species of animal either character will be, how the penguins fit into the conflict between the characters, or who else from the rest of the Madagascar universe will be featured in the movie (though...

The "Star Wars" films that hit Blu-ray on September 16 aren’t going to be the same movies you grew up with.
Like the previous special editions director George Lucas has released, the Blu-ray releases will be tinkered with and updated to the director's liking. The Digital Bits says that most of it is small stuff that is for the better, like remedied color timing (the lightsabers now look a lot better) and edited out mistakes (say goodbye to the puppeteer's arm on the Wampa on "Empire Strikes Back").
The biggest change to the movies, however, is the switch from the puppet Yoda in "The Phantom Menace" to a new digital one that will be consistent with "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith." As to whether there will be any more changes to the films, well, we'll have to wait until the release to find out if Lucas left in other surprises.

Five years since the last Scary Movie film, Dimension Films are keen to resurrect the franchise.
The horror spoof series kicked off in 2000 under the direction of the Wayans brothers, and grossed nearly $300m worldwide.
Since then, we have seen three more films spoofing movies like The Exorcist, The Ring, Signs, Saw, Save The Last Dance and 8 Mile.
Dimension Films have signed writers Stephen Leff, John Aboud and Michael Colton to parody more films in Scary Movie 5.
Bloody Disgusting reported that they are also hoping to bring back previous cast members.
Offers have been made to Anthony Anderson and Kevin Hart, who both starred in Scary Movie 3 and 4, and Regina Hall, who starred in all four films, although nothing has been signed.
There is no word on whether David Zucker, who directed the last two films, will return to direct.

It's been 5 years since we last saw Anna Faris (below) and David Zucker team up for 'Scary Movie 4'. The likes of 'Saw', 'The Village' and 'War of the Worlds' were high of the list of horrors being spoofed back then so it'll be interesting to see what scribes Stephen Leff, John Aboud and Michael Colton bring to the script for 'Scary Movie 5'. No word yet as to whether or not Faris will return to her role as Cindy but those Weinstein fellas are still trying to grab some familiar franchise faces in the form of Anthony Anderson ('Scream 4') and Kevin Hart who both appeared in parts 3 and 4. Regina Hall ('Law Abiding Citizen') is also being tapped to return to the fray as Brenda....

Earlier this year, Anthony Anderson did something very meta. After having starred in two films from the Scary Movie franchise, which began as a parody of Wes Craven's Scream, Anderson played Deputy Perkins in Scream 4. Now he may be coming full circle as, according to Bloody Disgusting, Dimension films hopes to bring him back for Scary Movie 5. The site reports that the studio has hired Stephen Leff, John Aboud and Michael Colton to pen the screenplay for the project and are now looking for Anderson, Regina Hall and Kevin Hart to reprise their roles from the previous installments. While offers have been sent out, nothing has been signed and it's not even clear if Anderson, Hall or Hart have entered negotiations. The actors have all appeared more than one other Scary Movie, Hall having appeared in all four and Anthony and Hart entering with franchise in the third film.

Reitman set to take 'Over' for Montecito
The Montecito Picture Co. has dipped into its discretionary fund to pre-emptively pick up Over My Dead Body from scribes Michael Colton and John Aboud as a directing vehicle for Ivan Reitman. Details about the project are being kept close to the vest, though it is being described as a comedic ghost story. The company's Jackie Marcus brought in the project and will produce along with Montecito principals Reitman, Tom Pollock and Joe Medjuck. The company has a first-look deal with DreamWorks. Reitman, director of comedy classics Stripes and Ghostbusters, is prepping superhero comedy Super Ex for Regency Enterprises. Colton and Aboud are regular commentators on VH1's Best Week Ever and I Love the '90s. They recently wrote sports spoof The Comebacks for Fox Searchlight and rewrote The Twits, based on the Roald Dahl book, for Disney. They also recently made a six-figure blind deal at Sony Television to create a half-hour comedy that Principato-Young will executive produce. Colton and Aboud are repped by CAA, Principato-Young and Jared Levine.
