Eddie Murphy Defends ‘Norbit’ After Rumors It Cost Him Oscar For ‘Dreamgirls’: “Ain’t That Bad”
Image
Although Eddie Murphy worked with Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson in the aughts, he might have been his own favorite leading lady.

The Oscar nominee recently defended his 2007 comedy Norbit as a “funny” movie, following theories that the Brian Robbins-directed movie cost him the golden statuette for Dreamgirls (2006).

“I love Norbit. Norbit came out right after I got that Oscar nomination. There were articles like, ‘How can he get an Oscar, he did this?’ They’re two different movies,” he explained to Complex.

“I wrote Norbit with my brother, Charlie [Murphy], and we think Norbit is funny,” added Murphy. “Here’s the thing with Norbit; it came out and they gave me Razzie Awards for worst actress, worst actor and worst actor of the decade. And I was like, ‘Come on now, shit ain’t that bad.’ I like Norbit. To this day, I like Norbit. There’s stuff in Norbit that makes me laugh.

Locarno 2025: Five Must-See Movies at This Year’s Festival
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is one of the world’s longest-running film festivals, known for its adventurous programming, exciting retrospectives, and nightly open-air screenings in the Piazza Grande, which is capable of seating 8,000 spectators. The latter is by no means the only screening spot, but it’s the location most associated with the festival.

Hosting world premieres and special screenings of highlights from Cannes, Sundance, and other early-year festivals, this year’s Piazza Grande selection includes the launch of Mediterranean drama “The Birthday Party,” starring Willem Dafoe and Vic Carmen Sonne; Emma Thompson-led thriller “The Dead of Winter;” Joachim Trier’s Cannes prize-winner “Sentimental Value;” a 35mm screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining;” Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’or winner “It Was Just an Accident;” and the European premiere of Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Alexander Payne, Golshifteh Farahani, four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Milena Canonero,...

Bill Condon credits Jennifer Lopez for getting Kiss of the Spider Woman made
Bill Condon says Jennifer Lopez enabled Kiss of the Spider Woman to be made. The musical movie is set to be released in cinemas in October and the director felt that J.Lo was the ideal person to play the titular "diva".Bill told The Hollywood Reporter: "Jennifer Lopez is the reason this movie got made. There's only one person who could play this diva. We don't have that many divas. I can count them on one hand. And then how many of them are great dancers, singers and Latin? I think there's only one."She handed our producer the Golden Globe for Dreamgirls, and I met her that night. She was talking about how much she wanted to make musicals. So, I just had this faith that this would speak to her."The Gods and Monsters filmmaker was particularly impressed at how Lopez, 56, mastered a number that the...

Bill Condon Explains Why Kiss Of The Spider Woman Should Be Seen in Theaters
Image
For years, Bill Condon has been wanting to make a movie adapation of Kiss of the Spider Woman. "I finally decided to do something about it around 10 years ago," said the director in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I pitched [John Kander and Terrence McNally] on what I wanted to do in a movie, including being truer to the original novel than they had been able to be." After working through rights ("It was a very long detour"), the movie is finally hitting theater screens this October. Condon believes that the theatrical experience is the only way to watch a musical. "Jennifer has a few moments where you just start applauding, it is built in because it comes out of theatrical roots... I...

Jennifer Lopez Lights Up Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman Musical
Bill Condon
Oscar-winner Bill Condon has finished his long-nurtured film of the Kander-and-Ebb musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, with Jennifer Lopez playing both faded movie goddess Aurora and the lethal Spider Woman who haunts a political prisoner’s imagination. The picture re-interprets the 1993 Tony-winning stage show that itself sprang from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel.

Filmed at Kearny, New Jersey’s Basin Studios on a reported $30 million budget, the project was financed independently by Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions alongside Artists Equity and Mohari Media. Producers Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy and Greg Yolen later struck a distribution pact with Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions and Ld Entertainment that places the U.S. theatrical bow on 10 October 2025, followed by an IMAX-supported rollout.

Condon told festival journalists he leaned into “heightened fantasy” to offset the film’s Argentine prison reality, praising Lopez for supplying “old-Hollywood flamboyance and raw feeling.” The movie premiered at Sundance on 26 January to a prolonged standing ovation.

Bill Condon Talks ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ and Why the World Needs Divas Like Jennifer Lopez
Image
Bill Condon is no stranger to the movie musical. He wrote 2002’s Chicago and went on to direct both Oscar-winner Dreamgirls and Disney hit Beauty and the Beast. This past winter Condon debuted his latest, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, in an unexpected locale: The Sundance Film Festival.

While it has debuted its fair share star power, Sundance is more known for quiet dramas than splashy musicals starring one of the world’s biggest popstars. (It should be noted that this wasn’t Condon’s first time at the fest — Gods and Monsters, for which he won an Oscar, debuted in Park City in 1998.) But the Eccles proved a warm venue for the film, which had audiences clapping for star Jennifer Lopez’s showstopping turn and the film earned overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Condon’s The Kiss of the Spider Woman — based on a 1976 novel by Argentinean author Manuel Puig,...

‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ at 40: The story behind the groundbreaking Oscar-winning drama
Image
Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Bill Condon’s upcoming movie musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman is heading to theaters on Oct. 10. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, the film is anticipated to be a serious Oscar contender, spinning a tale of human connection between two unlikely prisoners — and the movie star that binds them together.

It’s the second feature film adaptation to spring from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Released on July 26, 1985, Héctor Babenco’s Kiss of the Spider Woman also proved a huge hit with Oscar voters, scoring four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 58th Academy Awards. It made history as one of the first films with overt LGBTQ+ themes to be nominated in both of those major categories.

'Twilight' Director Says Studio Gave Her a Cupcake After Film's Success
Image
Twilighttook a huge bite out of the box office when it was released in 2008, pulling in a bloodsucking $70.6 million opening haul in the United States and Canada, while also setting a new record at the time for the biggest opening weekend for a female-directed film. Catherine Hardwicke helmed the vampire romance, based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer, and its commercial success paved the way for the saga to become a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut — but the studio didn't part with too much money for her gift.

During an interview with The Guardian, the Twilight filmmaker recalled receiving an insultingly small gift from the film distributor, Summit Entertainment, which was perhaps made worse by the fact that she knew successful male directors in the same position as her might be gifted "a car, or a three-picture deal, or [getting] to do basically whatever you want" after a similar triumph.

‘Twilight’ Director Says Studio Gave Her a “Mini Cupcake” After Film’s Box Office Success
Image
Catherine Hardwicke is getting candid about the difference in how male and female directors are treated in Hollywood.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, the Twilight filmmaker recalled the gift she received from the film’s producers, Summit Entertainment, following the Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson-led movie’s surprise triumph at the box office. While Summit hoped it would gross at least $30 million during its run, Twilight went on to earn $408.4 million worldwide.

“I walked into a room with all these gifts, and everybody was congratulating the studio, and they gave me a box,” Hardwicke recalled. “I opened it up, and it was a mini cupcake.”

However, she said male directors might be gifted “a car, or a three-picture deal, or [getting] to do basically whatever you want” following a successful movie.

Hardwicke admitted that she realized the hard truths behind filmmaking quite quickly in her career. “No, people...

Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche Head to Locarno as Swiss Fest Announces Lineup: An ‘Ambitious and Exciting Edition’
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival has announced its full lineup, which will see Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche and Ben Rivers competing for its prestigious Golden Leopard.

Jude, who won the Special Jury Prize only two years ago – for “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” – will bring the much-anticipated “Dracula.” In a conversation with Variety, the Romanian director said: “If ‘Kontinental’ 25’ is my answer to Roberto Rossellini, let’s say that ‘Dracula’ is my love letter to Ed Wood.”

“There’s a lot of talk about A.I. these days, but after this film, you won’t talk about it in the same way. It’s a very radical film, a crazy political comedy,” said Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro.

Among all the 17 world premieres in Locarno’s main International Competition, Abdellatif Kechiche will continue his controversial saga with “Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due” – a...

Locarno 2025 Lineup Includes New Films by Radu Jude, Alexandre Koberidze, Sophy Romvari, Abdellatif Kechiche & More
Image
Set to take place August 6-16, the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival has now unveiled its promising lineup. Among the highlights are the world premieres of Radu Jude’s second feature of 2025, Dracula; Alexandre Koberidze’s Dry Leaf; Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron; Maureen Fazendeiro’s The Seasons; Le Lac from Jean-Luc Godard’s collaborator Fabrice Aragno; Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest; Abdellatif Kechiche’s long-awaited sequel Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due; Sho Miyake’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers; and many more.

“Building the program of the Locarno Film Festival means engaging with the living matter of contemporary cinema. A cinema that unfolds while the world is undergoing violent upheavals, while we witness – in real time – horrors that we had only read about in history books or studied in archival footage,” said Giona A. Nazzaro, Artistic Director.

He continues, “The question is simple, and brutal in its inevitability:...

Locarno: Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche & ‘Viet And Nam’ Filmmaker Trương Minh Quý Among Directors Set To Debut New Works In Competition
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival will debut 17 features, including new works by Radu Jude and Abdellatif Kechiche, as part of its 2025 competition. This year’s event runs from August 6 to 16.

The festival announced its competition lineups this morning. The Radu Jude feature is his much-talked-about Dracula. The film was shot in Transylvania and is said to blend several takes on the Dracula story. Teasing the project as last year’s Locarno Film Festival, Jude said: “I am from Romania. My father is actually from Transylvania. It’s time that someone from Romania does a Dracula film. It’s only Hollywood that has done it 1,000 times. We shouldn’t let Hollywood dominate our Dracula.”

The Abdellatif Kechiche feature is Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due, the third edition in his controversial Mektoub series. Ben Rivers, a Locarno regular, will debut his latest feature, Mare’s Nest. Scroll down for the full Loarno lineup.

The 15 Best Eddie Murphy Movies, Ranked
Image
Eddie Murphy has made 42 feature films, not counting stand-up specials and documentary appearances. And while he's dabbled in dramas like many other comedians have, he remains best known for making people laugh. It's understandable, as he got his start on "Saturday Night Live" in 1980 before breaking out on the big screen with some of the decade's most memorable comedies. He went on to tweak his appeal and found even greater success with family comedies that still sit among his highest-grossing films (although he does regret turning down a movie in the 1980s that combined live-action with animation).

Of course, Murphy's also seen some down years as several of his movies failed to find receptive audiences or critical acclaim, resulting in some notably rough Rotten Tomatoes streaks. Films like "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "Holy Man," and "Meet Dave" probably have their defenders, but don't go expecting to find them in the list below.

Squid Game Season 3's Creepiest New Character Gives Twilight Vibes
Image
Don't hide or seek if you haven't watched through episode 5, season 3 of "Squid Game" — spoilers lie ahead! You've been warned!

We all knew this was coming. After finding out that Kim Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri), also known as Player 222 in the titular games, was pregnant back in season 2, audiences likely knew this would be a huge plot point in season 3. True to form, the series gave audiences a huge shock when, in the season's third episode, Jun-hee gives birth in the middle of a dangerous game, during which players are split into two teams to play the children's game of hide and seek. The twist? Players in red vests are the "seekers," and they're carrying knives; if they don't kill at least one fellow player, they'll be eliminated from the game entirely. The ones in blue vests have to "hide" by escaping through different doors in the massive set, and the...

The Universal Monsters Still Deserve A Big-Screen Dark Universe – And There’s Proof It Can Work
Image
Universal’s posse of freaks had it all: great costume design, scary moments, and performances cranked all the way to eleven. That’s why love for the Universal Monsters still endures. That classic era, running from the 1920s to the 1950s, really covered the full spectrum of tone and genre – from genuine tragedy, like The Wolf Man or The Phantom Of The Opera, to the flat-out bizarre, with Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein or Invisible Agent (a piece of wartime propaganda where the son of the Invisible Man becomes – you guessed it! – a secret agent). These characters even shared the screen, paving the way for crossover films. While time has inevitably revealed cracks in some of these old horror pictures, they remain flat-out iconic. Frankly, they deserve a proper comeback.

Fast forward over 50 years, and there’s still an outpouring of love for them. The monsters have been revived on the big screen multiple times,...

Pride Month Viewing: 20 Buzzy LGBTQ Movies Of 2025
Image
With another Pride Month underway, LGBTQ rights and representation in media have never been more important.

Following the Trump administration’s attacks on Dei and recent attempt to cancel Pride Month, GLAAD is preparing to release its 13th annual Studio Responsibility Index on June 11, showing the lowest percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films in the past three editions of the report. The study tracks scripted films released in 2024 from ten top film distributors.

Although those numbers are bleak, LGBTQ stories continue finding a way to the big screen and streamers alike, with titles from Andrew Ahn, Bill Condon and Ethan Coen, navigating topics of same-sex marriage, police profiling, sex work and anti-trans legislation.

From groundbreaking documentaries to kink-driven romance and intergenerational stories of family and community, these are some of the buzziest new and upcoming LGBTQ releases of 2025.

Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon bust the Cookie Monster in a new short video from Netflix
Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
Netflix is celebrating its Tudum event with a bevy of announcements, including the release of the trailers for Happy Gilmore 2, Stranger Things season 5 and a sneak peek at the new season of Wednesday. The event additionally presented the trailer for the upcoming Ben Affleck and Matt Damon crime film The Rip, which has not yet made its way online. Additionally, Sesame Street was recently announced to be premiering new episodes on the streaming platform in conjunction with PBS.

As part of the festivities, Netflix released a short, humorous video with both Affleck and Damon first occupying their Miami police characters from The Rip, as they attempt to bust Sesame Street‘s Cookie Monster, who then breaks the illusion by complimenting the actors (Damon is even seen sporting his Odyssey beard). The video commemorates both the upcoming film from the duo and the streamer’s new deal with the Sesame Street series,...

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon seize cash & lose control in first trailer for The Rip; Affleck cites Heat & Training Day as influences
Ben Affleck
Netflix’s annual Tudum event is underway, and we have many trailers and sneak peeks at some of the streamer’s most anticipated movies and shows. Near the top would be the upcoming pairing of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, The Rip, the first trailer revealed this weekend. Presenting the trailer were both Affleck and Damon (along with some other surprise co-stars), with Affleck saying that The Rip channels movies like Heat and Training Day. While the trailer has not been made available online, this exclusive look allowed the cast to challenge fans not to “rip” it to leak online. That’s some meta marketing right there!

Previously marketed as Rip (as in “rest in peace”), The Rip (as in something you pull from a crime scene) is directed by Joe Carnahan, making it a Smokin’ Aces reunion for the director and Affleck. It’s probably more notable for most...

How Dark Universe Went From Failed Film Franchise to Successful Theme Park Land
Image
On May 22, 2017, Universal unveiled its Dark Universe, a new, interconnected series of movies based on the studio’s beloved stable of classic movie monsters. They even released a photo, which looked real enough until you started to see the seams, with Johnny Depp (set to play the Invisible Man); Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Russell Crowe); Frankenstein’s Monster (Javier Bardem); along with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, both mummies and both stars of “The Mummy,” which was set to open later that same summer and kick off the shared, monster-filled universe.

The sky – with an ominous, full moon perched right in the middle of it – was seemingly the limit. Then it all came crashing down, only to be resurrected in sunny Orlando, Florida.

Best laid plans

In addition to the previously announced actors that were set to undergo a monstrous transformation, Angelina Jolie was rumored for a “Bride of Frankenstein...
