The Ones After the Super Bowl: 10 Biggest Post-Game Shows of All Time
Image
Super Bowl Lix on Sunday will bring in the biggest TV audience of the year — and, following the game, the biggest audience ever for Fox’s game show The Floor.

In the early years of the Super Bowl, whichever network aired the game (CBS and NBC shared NFL rights back then) went to its regular Sunday night programming afterward — in three of the Super Bowl’s first four years, that meant an episode of Lassie on CBS.

Eventually, though, broadcasters figured...

Album of the Week: Desertshore - Arc of an Arrow Blind
From the family tree of Red House Painters/Mark Kozelek -- one of my favorite artists -- comes the fifth Desertshore album, Arc of an Arrow Blind (Darkan Records). This is a wonderfully engaging instrumental album of sublime depth and beauty. Think of a more textured Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon with arpeggiated guitars and piano/keyboard riffs with the bass and drums anchoring the proceedings in various rhythmic rock, jazz and even hypnotic world beat patterns. (Check out "Descend Like The Sun.")

Recorded in just 4 days with the core trio of former Red House Painters guitiarist Phil Carney, classically trained pianist Chris Connolly and drummer Mike Wells. The album also features Benjamin Powell on violin and Erik Kertes on bass. Ben is a gypsy jazz enthusiast, La session cat and has collaborated with jazz giant Peter Erskin and Gonzalo Beraga. Erik is a young La session player and touring musician.

Is 'The Revenant' the Most Hellish Shoot of All Time?
Christopher Connelly and Stefano Mingardo in Atlantis Interceptors (1983)
Long reads still reveal the rewards of shoe-leather reporting, writerly craft and attention to detail.  Espn contributor Chris Connelly, now editor-in-chief of Grantland, used to write and edit at the late, lamented monthly magazine Premiere (as did I), where writers would hang out for days with cast and crew on the set during production and write, at a leisurely pace, a long feature months later. Now Grantland is one of the few places left in the media landscape that devotes time to long-reads with actual reporting. Connelly has shared the fruits of the time he spent in the editing room of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's much-anticipated frontier saga "The Revenant" (Fox, December 25), shot in the Canadian Rockies with precious little natural light by the great back-to-back Oscar-winner Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki. Connelly also got on the phone.  So, it seems, did another former Premiere writer now at The Hollywood...

'The Revenant' Still Not Done Shooting, DiCaprio's Character Says 'Almost Nothing'
The first trailer for The Revenant arrived last week and managed to impress most that saw it as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's follow-up to last year's Best Picture-winner Birdman has been hotly anticipated from the moment it was announced. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, the story centers on explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) as he's brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Hardy), turning the film not only into a tale of survival, but also revenge and redemption. Tom Hardy in The RevenantPhoto: 20th Century Fox The film, which began shooting in October 2014 in Calgary, overshot its production schedule, which is why Hardy had to drop out of Suicide Squad. One giant leap forward for football! College football star Michael Sam came out as gay Sunday, Feb. 9, which could make him the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL. "I came to tell the world, I am an openly proud gay man," Sam, 24, announced in interviews with Espn and the New York Times. "I understand how big this is," the All-American defensive lineman told Chris Connelly on Espn's Outside the Lines. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before and [...]...

'Frasier' reunion: The cast talks fond memories and Eddie -- Video
Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, Peri Gilpin, and Jane Leeves in Frasier (1993)
If everything had gone Kelsey Grammer’s way, Frasier might have ended up nothing more than an idea.

“My initial feelings were that Frasier should die with Cheers,” Grammer told ABC’s Chris Connelly on the set of EW’s latest Reunions issue. Of course, Grammer eventually changed his mind — paving the way for 11 seasons of intellectually-laced farce on Frasier.

Before signing on for the show, though, Grammer made a few requests: specifically, that his character not be married, and that his onscreen child would make only occasional appearances. “Of course,” adds Grammer, “I forgot to mention I didn’t...

ABC Announces Full Fall 2011-12 Primetime Schedule
NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.

Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

Day Time Series

That's Rich: Replacing Charlie Sheen...
In case you haven't heard, Charlie Sheen has been in the news a lot this week. Something about tiger blood... and F-18s... and warlocks... and terrestrial realmed goddesses that help him win at... something.

It's all one interview-driven haze, but one thing is clear: there's no way Sheen takes on the persona of Charlie Harper again. Two and a Half Men has been shut down for the season and Chuck Lorre has repeatedly said he'll never air the series without this star.

I can't help but wonder: why the heck not?!?

I've never seen the show - I prefer sitcoms that are original, mature, funny - but friends tell me Sheen really does carry the whole thing (sorry, Jon Cryer). Still, that was said about George Clooney on ER, David Caruso on NYPD Blue, William Peterson on CSI. Lead actors often move on and a few fans are lost...

Forgotten Action Cinema: Raiders of Atlantis
Infamous “Cannibal Holocaust” director Ruggero Deodato’s silly 1983 action knock-off “Raiders of Atlantis” (aka “Atlantis Interceptors”) is quite possibly one of the most unintentionally confusing movies ever to grace my highly perplexed television screen. Working from a script that was clearly written while binging on big-budget Hollywood drivel, Deodato assaults the viewer with a large number of quasi-interesting ideas — then suddenly abandons all of them once he’s painted himself directly into the nearest corner. What could have been a sly sci-fi actioner about the sudden, unexpected return of Atlantis quickly spirals into a nonsensical hodge-podge of generic shoot-outs, cheap helicopter sequences, and oh-so memorable one-liners, the latter of which are mostly delivered by “Cannibal Apocalypse” veteran Tony King. Also entrenched in this cinematic madness is “Peyton Place” star Christopher Connelly, who often appears to be just as genuinely muddle-headed as everyone else. Attempting to solve any of the puzzles...

"Dancing with the Stars" hopeful and "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino says steroids are not behind his famous six-pack.

Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino: I'm No 'Roider
He’s infamous for his six-pack abs and ripped body, and while some have asserted in the past that he takes steroids, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino revealed that he "never" has.

During a recent interview with Et Online’s Chris Connelly, the "Dancing with the Stars" competitor was asked if he has ever taken the bodybuilder's drug of choice to help bulk up.

To this, "The Situation" responded, “Oh never, never, never. The steroid look is definitely a bulkier look. I have a more thin, lean look.”

He added, however, “And I don't judge. If somebody's going to take steroids, that's their prerogative and their body. I'm worried about taking care of myself and working out and taking my body to the best it could be."...

The Greatest 'Rock N' Jock Softball' All-Stars Of All Time

Today is, I believe, the saddest day of the year. Because, as is tradition following the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, there are absolutely no sports on TV, which is a total bummer (Ok, there are some Wnba games). So naturally, I am left scrambling to fill the void.

I've already called my parents and told them I loved them, rescued a pair of dogs from an all-kill shelter, and donated money to several worthwhile charities, but none of that has brought me the kind of perverse gratification that staring at the lineups of my struggling fantasy baseball teams does (curse you Jacoby Ellsbury!). Perhaps I am obsessed with sports.
