Almost everyone who saw Andor wants more of the Star Wars series, and these 10 science fiction shows come closest to replicating its magic. Andor is, simply put, one of the best Star Wars shows ever made. From Tony Gilroy's incredible writing to the way it ties into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the rest of the Star Wars movies, Andor is nothing short of a masterpiece. It's understandable, then, that fans of the show would want more as soon as possible, though the series has been on hiatus since Andor season 1 ended in 2022.
Though the April 22, 2025, release date of Andor season 2 is rapidly approaching, fans of the show may want to watch something similar to bide time until its release. Luckily, there are already 10 science fiction shows that feel extremely similar to Andor, and all of them have something distinct to offer fans of the Star Wars series.

There have been plenty of TV shows that astound viewers with an incredible first season, only for it to quickly decline in quality and make them feel like it should have just remained one great miniseries. This can often be the case when a show was initially planned as a one-off series but became so popular that it was artificially extended despite there being no real artistic drive to continue telling the characters story. This also commonly occurred when a TV show based on a book was forced to move past its source material in later seasons.
While many great shows were canceled after just one season, there were plenty of others that continued when they shouldnt have. There have also been some great anthology shows that got everything right in their debut season, yet when it was time to shake things up with a new cast of characters for...

Scott Speedman is a husband whose dark secrets are bubbling to the surface in Cellar Door. Jordana Brewster is a woman whose desire to build a happy life with her husband faces a dark hurdle in Cellar Door. The “Bluebeard”-like hook of splendors granted on one condition — never, ever enter a household’s specific forbidden zone — raises expectations of a spooky, macabre good time. Those expectations are almost entirely thwarted by “Cellar Door,” even to the degree of our never actually peeking behind the titular locked portal. Starring Jordana Brewster and Scott Speedman as a couple gifted luxe new digs with the aforementioned proviso, Vaughn Stein’s thriller is too simplistic and implausible to provide any chills. But despite some lurid eventual plot elements, it’s also too blandly slick in a TV-movie mode to offer much trashy fun. Lionsgate launches the feature in limited U.S. theaters plus on-demand platforms on Nov. 1.

"There's something in this house... We can't stay here, we gotta get out." Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for a new horror thriller titled Cellar Door, arriving to watch starting in November. This one seems to be less horror, more thriller, as the official synopsis only calls it a "suspenseful thriller" and it's not even opening during October's horror month anyway. Looking for a fresh start after a miscarriage, a couple find themselves being gifted a massive home of their dreams with one caveat – they must never open the cellar door. But, why? Whether they can live without knowing what's down there triggers shocking consequences. Set in Portland, Oregon. "As time passes, the couple realizes that old houses are indeed like people...they all have their deep, dark secrets." Starring Jordana Brewster, Scott Speedman, Addison Timlin, Chris Conner, Katie O'Grady, Randy Sean Schulman, and Laurence Fishburne. This does look scary,...

Altered Carbon season 3 is one of the painful Netflix cancelations I won't ever get over, but I still think that one change made to the source material was responsible for the show's eventual cancelation. Based on Richard K. Morgan's book trilogy, Netflix's adaptation began very faithful to the author's work. Unfortunately, Altered Carbon season 2 took only a handful of elements from Morgan's second novel when constructing its story. However, I believe that the show's underwhelming second outing could have weathered the storm if not an interesting deviation from the book in Altered Carbon season 1.
The show's first batch of episodes was led by Joel Kinnaman's Takeshi Kovacs, the last of the Envoys who is enlisted to solve the murder of a member of the planet's elite class. Even now, I think it's one of Netflix's best sci-fi shows. Kovacs establishes a base at the Raven Hotel, where the...

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Kevin Costner‘s two-part western epic passion project is just over the horizon. The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and produces through his Territory Pictures.

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

No resleeves this time – we must bid adieu to Netflix’s Altered Carbon. Actually, it was time to bid adieu to Altered Carbon months ago. According to reports, the streaming service called time on the pricey sci-fi drama series all the way back in April, but news of the show’s cancellation didn’t reach any of us until now, for reasons best known to Netflix.
Unlike Netflix’s recent choice to drop sophomore seasons of both The Society and I Am Not Ok With This, the decision not to pursue a potential third season of Laeta Kalogridis’ cyberpunk adaptation had nothing to do with pandemic logistics, Deadline confirms. It was just a standard case of ye olde “viewership vs. cost renewal review process” for Altered Carbon, which is arguably less comforting for fans of the series.

Netflix has canceled its science-fiction series “Altered Carbon” after two seasons.
The series featured both Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie as the lead character, Takeshi Kovacs. It was based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name, which took place in a society where the human mind has been digitized, thus giving people the ability to upload their mind into new bodies (referred to as “sleeves”).
Kinnaman played the character in season and Mackie took over for season two. In Morgan’s book series, Kovacs’ story spans hundreds of years, many different bodies and planets.

Another one bites the dust at Netflix.
The streamer has just swung the axe on Altered Carbon, Deadline reports.
The decision comes months after the conclusion of Altered Carbon Season 2, which arrived February 27.
Altered Carbon Season 2 was followed by an anime movie in March, but things have been silent since.
It was thought that the series was in limbo due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which hit mere weeks after the serialized drama returned.
Deadline says that the decision is not due to Covid-19 and is actually based on how many viewers watched the second season.
The series did come with a hefty price tag, which would mean that the streamer would be looking for it to overperform in the ratings.
The second season, despite drawing decent reviews and led by Anthony Mackie, did not garner nearly as much buzz as its first season.
It picked up 30 years after the first season,...

Netflix has removed Altered Carbon‘s stack and stomped on it, hard: The sci-fi drama has been cancelled and will not return for Season 3.

“Altered Carbon” has been canceled at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The second season of the sci-fi series aired on the streaming service back in February, while the first season aired in 2018. An anime special titled “Resleeved,” which was set before the events of Season 1, was released in 2019.
The series was based on the novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan. It followed the adventures of interstellar warrior Takeshi Kovacs, who was played by Joel Kinnaman in Season 1 and by Anthony Mackie in Season 2. According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, the decision to cancel the show was made due to Netflix’s traditional approach of cost versus viewership of a series.
Last week, it was announced that Netflix had pulled the plug on both “The Society” and “I’m Not Okay With This” due to budgetary issues surrounding increased health and safety costs related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Percy Jackson is being rebooted as a streaming series and an Extraction sequel is in development, both of which were correct – Netflix wants to do at least five seasons of its critically acclaimed sci-fi drama, Altered Carbon. Plot details on how things will unfold remain unclear, but as of right now, at least, that’s the plan.
Created by Laeta Kalogridis and starring Chris Conner alongside Renée Elise Goldsberry and Will Yun Lee, Altered Carbon takes place in a future where human consciousness can be digitalized, downloaded and stored. Its story, which first took Netflix by storm in 2018, follows a criminal who starts afresh in another body and uses his second chance at life to solve a complex, high concept murder mystery.

Da 5 Bloods is currently taking the film world by storm, with Spike Lee’s latest movie hitting the top of Netflix‘s Top 10 charts as well as earning critical acclaim. It’s bound to go down as one of the best pics of 2020, then, especially as we have far fewer films this year than expected. Many of Lee’s contemporary directors are also praising his work on social media, and one of them is Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson. In fact, Johnson likes it so much that he’s decreed it to be Star Wars canon.
“#Dafivebloods is awesome and also canon,” the Knives Out filmmaker wrote on Twitter. He then attached two images of actress Veronica Ngo. First, as Hanoi Hannah in Lee’s flick and then as Paige Tico, the tragically short-lived sister of Rose, in The Last Jedi.

According to “Altered Carbon” showrunner Alison Schapker, the “secret weapon” of Netflix’s cyberpunk sci-fi drama is the most compelling rule of its technocratic world: That souls can transfer bodies. That simple premise allows the series to bring fresh talent to its lead character each season as well as bring other characters back from the dead in myriad ways, not to mention imagining a world where women of color are powerful and in charge. Inclusivity is baked into the DNA of the show and that may be its strongest selling point.

Takeshi Kovacs can’t smile. That’s just a fact or, better put, a defining facet of “Altered Carbon’s” lead character. After watching the first 10 hours of Netflix’s sci-fi adaptation — about a future where a person’s brain can be digitized into a portable “stack,” and then swapped into a new body to achieve immortality — it was clear the 300-year-old Envoy played (mostly) by Joel Kinnaman can fight well, shoot even better, and have remarkably nimble sex for a three-times-over centenarian.
But following that first season, my own digitized stack can only produce images of an angry Kinnaman, a sad Kinnaman, and, the most popular version, a confused Kinnaman, who’s blank face offers only the faintest hint of curiosity. The actor known for similarly hard-edged action roles in “Robocop” and “Suicide Squad” could dutifully perform Kovacs’ functions, just like his military-trained interstellar warrior, but he cannot smile.

Altered Carbon pulled out all the stops in season one, introducing viewers to a cyberpunk world ruled by wealthy nigh-immortals and others who, for a price, can digitally transfer their consciousness into new bodies. But with the audience’s cynical proxy embodied by Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs, a soldier from a previous era who is awakened to defend the powerful, viewers might be wondering what will happen now that the characters in season one are either dead or have been forced to take on different “sleeves” with new actors embodying them?

We probably don’t need to tell you that Altered Carbon was one of Netflix’s biggest hits when it premiered in 2018. Based on Richard Morgan’s 2002 novel, the thrilling and often brilliant sci-fi series took us on a dark, wild ride through a very cool and engaging cyberpunk world where consciousness can be transferred to different bodies.
In the first season, we followed Takeshi Kovacs, who was played by Joel Kinnaman, and while the character himself will indeed be returning in this next batch of episodes, it’ll be a different actor portraying the part as this time, he’ll be inhabiting a new body.
