The two-and-a-half-minute look at the third installment of the romantic comedy franchise opens on Nia Vardalos’ Toula catching audiences up, explaining that a lot has happened since her wedding in the first film to John Corbett’s Ian.

“My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village and reconnect with our roots, so we’re having a reunion,” Toula says. “And by we, I mean the whole family.”

The trailer footage also sees the lead character begin to take her place as the new “head of the family,” according to her brother, Nick (Louis Mandylor). The third film marks the first one in the franchise without the late Michael Constantine, who played Portokalos family patriarch Costas.

Opa! Nia Vardalos revealed the start of production on My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 in Athens yesterday in an Instagram video shot in her hotel near The Plaka. Vardalos will be pulling double duty as the film’s lead Toula Portokalos and its director.

Sources tell Deadline that Greece will be the setting for Toula and Ian’s (John Corbett) daughter Paris’ wedding.

Vardalos originally announced My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 was in development last April but was facing challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The third installment will be dedicated to Michael Constantine who died in August of 2021.

Nia Vardalos has announced that production has begun in Athens, Greece, on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” the second sequel to her hit 2002 family comedy.

But Vardalos also announced a director for the film — confirming that she will in fact be behind the director’s chair for the third installment in the franchise. It will make the film only her second outing as a director and her first in over a decade since directing 2009’s “I Hate Valentine’s Day.”

“Thank you to Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus! And much love and gratitude to you all for your support as we waited to film. Greece baby. Greece!,” she also added in a caption on Instagram along with a brief video message announcing the film.

Vardalos did not disclose whether any cast from the prior two films would be returning for the sequel, nor did she reveal any plot details.

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” has started filming in Athens, Greece. The franchise’s writer and star Nia Vardalos made the announcement on her Instagram page, and she also revealed that she is directing this third installment. Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.

Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

Nia Vardalos reunited with her My Big Fat Greek Wedding costars Louis Mandylor, Lainie Kazan, and Gia Carides to tribute their costar Michael Constantine who died on Aug. 31 at the age of 94.

“Friends in real life are why our films are so much fun to make,” she wrote. “Cousin Nikki @gia.carides & brother Nick @louismandylorofficial & mom, @lainie_kazan gathered to honor the memory of Michael Constantine, may he rest in peace.”

She added of Constantine, “He had told me he wouldn’t be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on. I wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision and will always treasure his last messages to me, hoping we were filming soon.”

The Instagram post also shared little details about the third installment from the franchise that Deadline hears will involve Toula (Vardalos) and Ian’s (John Corbett) daughter Paris’ (Elena Kampouris) wedding.
