Chelsea “Submit £45 Million Bid” For England International

Chelsea have bid £45 million for Everton defender John Stones, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Their final bid of £37million was point-blank refused by Roberto Martinez, despite Stones filing a formal transfer request.

Now, The Blues see the 21-year-old as the man to martial their leaky defence after setting off on one of the worst Premier League title defences of all time.

Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill in Softcops at Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Arthur Darvill, familiar to sci-fi fans as Doctor Who sidekick Rory Williams, is aiming the Tardis for Stratford-on-Avon this weekend.

The Birmingham-born actor is taking a break from helping Time Lord Matt Smith and fellow companion Amy Pond save the universe to join the cast of Softcops.

Carol Churchill's play about the criminal justice system is being performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at 11.30am on Sunday, October 30.

Directed by Elizabeth Freestone, it's part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 50th birthday celebrations.

Arthur is playing Pierre, with John Marquez (PC Penhale in ITV's comedy Doc Martin) joining him as Vidocq and Geoffrey Streatfeild in the role of Lacenaire and Conspirator. Streatfeild, who last performed for the RSC in Michael Boyd's award-winning Histories Season in which he played Henry V among other roles, was recently seen in the BBC's final series of Spooks as junior case officer Calum Reed.

Britain's stages are about to be invaded by drunks. What's the secret to playing a tipsy character? And who is drama's biggest boozer?

Drama frequently holds up a mirror to our drinking habits: think of the booze that casually gets put away in plays as diverse as Pinter's Betrayal, Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, or anything by Tennessee Williams and Sam Shepard. Actors are routinely required to express joy, cry real tears or shed fake blood; yet there is no technical challenge more tricky than the business of drinking on stage. This spring they are getting plenty of practice at mastering the art, as a host of drunk characters are staggering the boards across the country.

Michael Caine once pointed out that a drunk person is actually trying very hard to be sober: therefore acting drunk requires a degree of reverse psychology. Sian Thomas, who is playing Martha in a revival of...
