Russell Crowe’s 42% Rotten Tomatoes Fan-Favorite Is a Sleeper Hit After Grossing $2 Million
Image
Russell Crowe will always be famous for his enduring, Oscar-winning performance in Gladiator, but just last year, he featured alongside a Marvel veteran in a gripping crime thriller that’s become a streaming hit. Crowe stars alongside Karen Gillan in Sleeping Dogs, the mystery suspense film following an ex-homicide detective with memory loss who’s forced to solve a brutal murder. However, in the process of doing so, he uncovers some dark secrets about his past. Sleeping Dogs is currently streaming on Hulu in the United States and on Netflix globally, where it’s one of the most popular movies in Canada, Taiwan, and Hungary. The film earned a poor 42% from critics but a solid 81% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $2 million at the box office during an extremely limited theatrical run.

Sleeping Dogs is based on The Book of Mirrors by E.O. Chirovici, and not to...

Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists, Scott Stuber Board Action-Thriller ‘The Seventh Man’ From ‘Carry On’ Writer T.J. Fixman (Exclusive)
Image
Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber are developing “The Seventh Man,” a new action-thriller that’s written by T.J. Fixman.

Stuber and Fixman previously collaborated on “Carry On,” a hostage thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman that Jaume Collet-Serra directed. The film was a hit for Netflix and currently sits in second place on the streamer’s list of most popular movies.

Stuber was in charge of Netflix’s film unit before leaving the company in 2024. He then announced he had signed a multi-year film partnership with Amazon MGM Studios under which the company agreed to finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under the United Artists (UA) label. The hope was to revitalize the brand, which once produced classics like “Rocky” and “Network” before it faded.

UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce “The Seventh Man” with Fixman serving as executive producer.

Michael Fassbender’s 19% Rotten Tomatoes Video Game Adaptation Is Finally a Streaming Hit Thanks to ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’
Image
Michael Fassbender’s critically panned video game movie has returned to streaming charts thanks to the release of the latest franchise installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Fassbender features alongside Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and more in Assassin’s Creed, the 2016 adaptation following Callum Lynch, a man who explores the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, to gain the skills of a Master Assassin to take on the Templars. Assassin’s Creed is currently the #2 most popular movie on Max at the time of writing. Although the film earned over $240 million at the global box office, it was maligned by both critics and audiences upon release, earning scores of 19% from the former and 42% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. Assassin’s Creed also stars Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and the late Michael Kenneth Williams.

Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, and Michael Leslie teamed up to write the screenplay for Assassin’s Creed, which is based...

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Movie Recap & Ending Explained: Who Really Killed Weider?
Image
Adam Cooper’s directorial debut, Sleeping Dogs, follows a theme similar to Nolan’s Memento and even the Stan original, The Tourist. In this psychological thriller starring Russell Crowe, memories play a central role as a former cop with Alzheimer’s reopens a case from nearly ten years ago. We, as humans, are the culmination of all our past experiences—good and bad ones included. These experiences forge our character and make us the people we are. However, one can’t help but wonder who we would be if these memories were to be erased. For a bioscience graduate who has spent a semester writing a review article on this disorder, Alzheimer’s might just be my biggest nightmare. This disorder, at best, can be prevented, but there is no known cure, which makes it more understandable why Roy Freeman undergoes the painful procedure of getting electrodes implanted in his head.

Sleeping Dogs (2024) A Russell Crowe Detective Thriller Filled with Murders, Mysteries, and the Intricacies of the Mind and Memories
Image
Sleeping Dogs is a thriller directed by Adam Cooper starring Russell Crowe. With Karen Gillian, Marton Csokas, and Tommy Flanagan. It is based on the novel by E.O. Chirovici.

“Sleeping Dogs” does not present as an original thriller or a film we haven’t seen before. Rather, it’s a movie that plays it safe, focusing on adhering to the classic guidelines of a psychological murder thriller: offering a touch of titillation for the viewer and most importantly, intriguing them through the progressive unraveling of the mystery via plot twists. It attempts on both fronts and succeeds, albeit without much creativity, thus undermining the effectiveness of those twists.

The premise seems promising, albeit reminiscent of a mashup between Memento and Final Analysis, but ultimately fails to replicate either of them.

Sleeping Dogs The Plot

A detective who has undergone experimental Alzheimer’s treatment is tasked with reviewing a murder case he was previously involved with.

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review
Image
Stars: Russell Crowe, Kelly Greyson, Pacharo Mzembe, Marton Csokas, Tommy Flanagan, Karen Gillan | Written by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage | Directed by Adam Cooper

Based on E.O. Chirovici’s novel The Book of Mirrors, Sleeping Dogs opens with a look at Roy Freeman and his apartment. It’s an apartment with notes taped everywhere, even on the TV Dinner he’s about to cook. They’re reminders, meant to help him cope with his Alzheimer’s while an experimental treatment he opted for starts to work. Neither the operation nor the notes prevented him from microwaving the TV remote, however.

He’s contacted by Emily Dietz from Project Clean Hands, a group devoted to freeing the wrongly convicted. They’re interested in the case of Isaac Samuel a death row inmate Freeman arrested and helped convict for the brutal murder of college professor Joseph Wieder.

Russell Crowe changed ending of new movie at last minute
Russell Crowe changed the ending of his new movie at the last minute. The 59-year-old actor stars in 'Sleeping Dogs' as an ex-homicide detective with a fractured memory alongside Karen Gillan and director Adam Cooper revealed Crowe shocked him by insisting he wanted to rewrite the ending. He told Collider: "Yeah, the whole end of the movie. I remember the day when we were shooting the final triangle standoff... Russell showed up that morning, we had two days to shoot that scene, and he was like, 'I don't like the scene'. And so I spent, I think, five hours in his trailer with him and we pretty much rewrote the whole scene. So that."You know, I also remember the very first scene where Karen's character meets Harry Greenwood's character, where Richard first meets Laura. That scene was originally written that Richard walks up to Laura sitting at...

Sleeping Dogs Filmmaker on Directing 'Cinematic Idol' Russell Crowe
Image
Sometimes, it's A-ok to meet your heroes. And one could say that happened on the set of Sleeping Dogs, which is now playing in theaters. Director Adam Cooper had the chance to work with Oscar winner Russell Crowe, who — as we learned from our recent interview — is Cooper's "cinematic idol." Sleeping Dogs sees Crowe back in the spotlight as a gritty ex-detective who returns to the scene after a death row confession leads him to a murder case from 10 years earlier.

Cooper is known for penning scripts for high-profile genre projects like Assassin's Creed and Allegiant, and Sleeping Dogs marks his first outing in the director's chair. He shared with us the perks of working with Crowe, what it was like helming a feature film, and why Red Dead Redemption would make for a great movie.

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review: Russell Crowe Plays an Ex-Cop with Alzheimer’s in a Scrappy Piece of Dementia Noir
Image
“Sleeping Dogs,” starring Russell Crowe as a retired cop with Alzheimer’s disease, is a half-rusted scrap heap of a detective mystery. It’s patchy, it’s badly lit, it’s glum, it’s overloaded with suspects, and it’s almost proud of its contrivances. Yet in its logy, booby-trapped way, it keeps you watching.

Crowe, with a white beard and shaved head that make him look like Santa Claus as a melancholy biker, plays Roy Freeman, who was forced to turn in his badge after he caused a drunk-driving accident. Now, he’s in the thick of serious midstage dementia; he has written labels on masking tape and plastered them around his apartment, so that he’ll be reminded of everything from his own name to where the hot water is. The gloss on “Memento” is obvious enough, but it’s also a coincidence that the film is being...

Sleeping Dogs Review | Russell Crowe Loses His Mind with Karen Gillan
Image
Karen Gillan shines in an otherwise monotonous, mostly lifeless film about a detective with memory loss. Crowe's subdued performance is interesting, but the whole thing has been done before and quickly becomes predictable. Tommy Flanagan is very good as a complete scumbag, but you can generally avoid this film and let sleeping dogs lie.

Sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie, as the saying goes. And folks have been saying this for centuries, if you want to do a deep dive and trace the phrase's origins. It dates back to the 1300s and possibly even before then. But more recently, it's been the inspiration of a new feature film by Adam Cooper in his feature directorial debut. Cooper is known for writing the scripts for genre projects like Allegiant (2016) and Assassin's Creed, both released in 2016. Sleeping Dogs is based on an acclaimed novel that possesses an entirely different title.

Karen Gillan & Sleeping Dogs Director On Her Femme Fatale Role And Russell Crowe Collaboration
Image
Russell Crowe's nuanced performance as a detective with Alzheimer's adds depth and intensity to the noir mystery of Sleeping Dogs. Karen Gillan shines as a complex femme fatale character who navigates deception and intelligence in the search for truth. Director Adam Cooper's collaborative approach and attention to detail in pacing make this film a riveting and rewatchable mystery.

Sleeping Dogs is a modern noir that follows Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective suffering from Alzheimer's. Asked to reinvestigate one of his former cases before the man convicted of the crime is executed, Roy must begin from the beginning due to the disease completely wiping out his memories. Roy faces countless obstacles in his search for the truth, and each new revelation sparks new questions about who and what he can trust, including his own mind.

Sleeping Dogs approaches the noir mystery through the lens of memory loss, seeming...

Bob Berney Talks Burlesque; ‘Late Night With The Devil’ Seen Scaring Up Sales; Radu Jude’s Satirical Bite – Specialty Preview
Image
Q&a’s are a staple of indie opening weekends since they tend to sell tickets but Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse has raised that bar, offering audiences seven-minute live burlesque revues before selected screenings of documentary Carol Doda Topless At The Condor. The ode to the woman, and to 1960s San Francisco where she broke out topless, opens in limited release in New York, LA, San Francisco and San Rafael. Dancers in what Bob Berney called a “Doda-esqe burlesque” will not be topless,” he said — “but pretty close.”

Dancers start in the audience then move to the front of the theater against a specially designed backdrop of image and sound on screen. “It brings you into that world immediately. You are there before the film starts,” he said.

“Eventizing” a film is great if you can do it. The box office is much better but still a bit weird since Covid.

Sleeping Dogs Review: A Meandering Whodunit That Wastes Talented Actors
Image
Sleeping Dogs' story lacks originality, borrowing too heavily from other successful crime thrillers, namely Memento. The good actors are given stock characters and are unable to shine due to stilted writing. The movie fails to deliver a clear message or point, making it difficult for viewers to connect with the story.

The clichés are all too apparent in Sleeping Dogs, Adam Cooper’s directorial debut. Russell Crowe stars as Roy Freeman, an ex-homicide detective who has forgotten most of his life due to Alzheimer's. While participating in a clinical trial to treat the disease, Roy finds himself pulled back into an old case when non-profit lawyer Emily Dietz (Kelly Graysen) contacts him on behalf of the alleged murderer Isaac Samuel (Pacharo Mzembe), who is set to be executed in a month. While a few of the actors give decent performances, it is not enough to overcome the stilted writing.

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review: Russell Crowe Plays an Ex-Cop With Dementia in a Tedious Thriller
Image
You know you’re getting old when your favorite movie stars are starting to play characters afflicted with dementia. Arriving shortly on the heels of Knox Goes Away, featuring Michael Keaton as a hitman suffering from the condition, is Adam Cooper’s neo-noir thriller starring Russell Crowe as an ex-cop whose mental condition has deteriorated so dramatically that he’s forced to leave notes plastered throughout his apartment, Memento-style. Despite the plot element’s familiarity, it’s still the most intriguing element of Sleeping Dogs, a sluggishly rendered mystery that audiences will have long stopped caring about before it reaches its conclusion.

Crowe plays Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective whose sad state of being is immediately signified not only by those notes offering the simplest of reminders but also the stack of Hungry-Man frozen dinners in his freezer. He’s wearing a large bandage on his head, the remnant...

Box office preview: ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ receives the call to bring March back on track
Image
When the March box office seems to be tailing off after a weaker weekend, who you gonna call? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview to find out.

For the third weekend this month, we have the potential for a movie to open with more than $40 million after literally months without one. That new movie is Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to the Jason Reitman-directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which helped revive the franchise in 2021 with what is now lovingly referred to as a “requel,” i.e. a combo of a reboot and a sequel.

“Frozen Empire” brings back the newest Ghostbusters, played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenzie Grace, and other characters from “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” as well as the OGs (Original Ghostbusters): Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and even Annie Potts. New characters for the movie — which returns the Ghostbusters to...

Sleeping Dogs Review: Russell Crowe Lays It on Thick in Forgettable Memento Clone
Russell Crowe in Sleeping Dogs (2024)
Intentionally or not, Sleeping Dogs invites comparison to Memento. In Adam Cooper’s steadfastly self-serious directorial debut, a bedraggled ex-homicide detective, Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe), is tasked with solving a brutal murder that he can’t recall due to his memory loss. But the comparison to Christopher Nolan’s breakout doesn’t do Sleeping Dogs any favors. For one, we know we’re in trouble from the moment we see Freeman stumbling through a decrepit apartment, its otherwise sparse walls adorned with handwritten messages that exist as much for his benefit as ours, like the unfortunately hilarious “You Have Alzheimers.”

From the start, the film lays it on thick. Freeman’s apartment has all the markers of someone whose mind is slowing deteriorating: staplers that have been left in water glasses, melted pieces of technology in the microwave, and half-eaten meals on top of furniture. The man wears the thickest...

Image
Since it was first announced last year that horror aficionado Mike Flanagan would be adapting yet another Stephen King book into a feature-length film in The Life of Chuck, audiences have been eager for more news. The director managed to wrangle not only a ton of familiar faces from his Flana-family but also some new ones, like Matthew Lillard (Scream). One of those returning collaborators is actress Karen Gillan who worked with the visionary on his sophomore movie, Oculus. Karen Gillan Talks ‘Sleeping Dogs’ and Also Not Knowing About Star-Lord’s Eventual MCU Return
Image
After a healthy run of comedy and genre work, Karen Gillan felt it was time for a dramatic change.

Shortly before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s whirlwind press tour, Gillan returned to Australia where she shot Thor: Love and Thunder a couple years earlier, and joined the cast of Adam Cooper’s Sleeping Dogs, led by Russell Crowe. The twisty psychological crime drama follows Crowe’s retired homicide detective Roy Freeman, as his recovery from an experimental Alzheimer’s procedure prompts him to re-approach a murder case from a decade earlier. Gillan plays the enigmatic Laura Baines, the right-hand researcher to Marton Csokas’ Dr. Joseph Wieder and his memory reconsolidation therapy thesis.

When Professor Wieder (Csokas) winds up dead, Freeman (Crowe) takes a newfound interest in Baines (Gillan) when he revisits the case a decade later. Sleeping Dogs plays with the tropes of the femme fatale through Baines,...
