Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon: The Director’s Cut’ Debuts on Apple TV+
Image
Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of his 2023 historical epic Napoleon has landed on Apple TV+.

Apple Original Films has released a new version with 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the Oscar-nominated tentpole. Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and dives deeper into the origins and ascent of the military leader through the prism of his often volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.

The director’s cut also focuses on Josephine’s own origin story with what Apple promises are more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. The original Napoleon film, with a screenplay by David Scarpa, spanned three decades of European history as the military commander triumphed in the Revolutionary Wars and rose to become Emperor of France in 1804, only to end his life in exile.

Ridley Scott Teases Streaming Release for Napoleon's 4-Hour Director's Cut
Image
Ridley Scott has shared an update on his extended director's cut for Napoleon, teasing a streaming release to follow the film's theatrical run.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular emperor, Napoleon is set to be released in theaters on Nov. 22 ahead of a streaming release on Apple TV+. The theatrical cut will span about 2 hours and 38 minutes, which is certainly no short film, but well short of the three-hour mark. Previously, Scott had teased a 4.5-hour cut of the film he was also working, and in the newest issue of Total Film magazine, he revealed that it's now down to about 4 hours and 10 minutes.

"I’m working on it. It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning," Scott said of the extended cut's current status, going on to tease its streaming release. "And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony,...

Ridley Scott Criticizes Joker's Violence But Celebrates Joaquin Phoenix's Performance
Image
Ridley Scott praises Joaquin Phoenix's performance in Joker, but expresses dislike for the film's celebration of violence. Phoenix's portrayal of the evil Commodus in Gladiator marked a turning point in his career, leading to his Oscar-winning role in Joker. Scott and Phoenix are teaming up again for Napoleon, a biopic that delves into the rise to power of the historic figure, with Vanessa Kirby co-starring as Empress Josephine.

Ridley Scott has already shown his admiration for Joaquin Phoenix, who stars in his next film and was the great villain of Gladiator, one of the filmmaker's greatest classics. The director even liked the actor's performance in Joker, although he does not feel the same admiration for the film itself.

Although Phoenix had been working in Hollywood for some time before being chosen to play the evil and ambitious Commodus in Gladiator, there is no doubt that this role marked a...

Ridley Scott Describes Napoleon Filming as Being ‘Like a Battle,’ New Images Released
Image
Ridley Scott's upcoming film, Napoleon, is described as a large-scale event and demands meticulous coordination with his team, much like a battle. The film features stunning military costumes and a military expert to create realistic battle sequences, highlighting the attention to detail in Scott's approach. Napoleon explores the life of the titular character, focusing on his conquests on the battlefield and his intense relationship with his wife, Josephine.

The next film from acclaimed and multi-award-winning director Ridley Scott, Napoleon, demanded a lot from the filmmaker and his team in order to get it made. In fact, Scott has now described the plan for the shooting to being "like a battle." The British director is no stranger to the world of wars and epic battles. Whether in science fiction films like Blade Runner, or historical dramas like Gladiator or The Last Duel, Scott has delivered bloody and violent confrontations on the big screen.

‘Napoleon’ trailer: Ridley Scott returns with Joaquin Phoenix as French emperor [Watch]
Image
The apparently ageless Ridley Scott is back with another historical epic. On Monday, Apple and Sony debuted the first trailer for Scott’s “Napoleon,” the 85-year-old filmmaker’s latest widescreen blockbuster.

The film reunites Scott with his “Gladiator” star Joaquin Phoenix for the first time since that Oscar-winning hit. “Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition,” Scott previously told Empire about his star. “That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know.”

In that same interview, Scott said Phoenix basically rewrote the script to better align it with his take on the character. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better,” Scott said.

The last time the two men worked together,...

Ridley Scott's Napoleon Sets Oscar-Friendly November Theatrical Release
Image
Movies about the infamous French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte have always been massive undertakings. After all, the wars and battles he unleashed were some of the biggest and deadliest in European military history. You can't exactly be frugal when adapting these battles to the big screen, and since they're such a significant part of Bonaparte's legacy, you shouldn't even think of skipping them. This is partially why Stanley Kubrick's biopic of the commander wound up in development hell and never found its way out during his lifetime.

However, it seems Ridley Scott has finally done what was previously thought to be nearly impossible: He has directed a biographical action epic based on Bonaparte's life, simply titled "Napoleon," and it is coming out later this year. Starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the commander, it marks the actor's first collaboration with Scott since their acclaimed team-up on 2000's "Gladiator." While...

Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special review: I tried to like it but it’s still worse than cranberry sauce and Whamageddon
Image
Over the past few years, a new Christmas ritual has entered my life. I find it easily the most irksome of them all, far outstripping cranberry sauce and Whamageddon. I refer, of course, to the duty that falls to me to review Mrs Brown’s Boys, which never fails to disappointment me in its abject poverty of ambition.

But this year, in honour of the recently departed Victor Lewis-Smith, the brilliant satirist and the finest television critic of our times, I thought I’d try to give Mrs Brown’s Boys a bit of a reappraisal. Lewis-Smith, you may recall, was not only a rare blend of the eloquent, the profane and the downright vicious, but an original thinker, and his take on Mrs Brown’s Boys lay far outside the consensus. He praised it because, in his words, every scene in the “unashamedly Rabelaisian comedy ... brimmed over with so much innocent joy...

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.

To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

Spitting Image is 30: Looking back at the satirical puppet classic
It's been a whopping 30 years since Spitting Image first hit our screens on ITV in 1984. The satirical puppet show quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the 1980s and early 1990s.

I wasn't able to fully appreciate the series when it was first on TV. When I watched it in the early '90s as a child, I found it funny mainly because of the silly puppets, even if I didn't quite understand what was going on. But in retrospective viewings, it still holds up as a genuinely hilarious satire of politics, entertainment, sport and general UK culture of the era.

It's quite incredible to think that Spitting Image hasn't been on air since 1996. To put that into perspective, the Spice Girls had only just been unleashed, Tony Blair hadn't been elected yet, and Lorde had only just been born.

As a show that is heavily reliant on topical...

Review: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
Comfortably broadcasting at North Norfolk Digital alongside Sidekick Simon (Tim Key), former chatshow host, Bond enthusiast and Bouncing Back author Alan Partridge is one of the leading lights of North Norfolk Digital. But when media conglomerate Glendale Media (their emptiness exemplified by meaningless motto ‘The way you want it to be’), takes over the station and instigates a revamp, Alan’s job is in jeopardy. Driving gloves in tow, the hero of the ‘Wales of the East’ convinces the new board that dinosaur DJ Pat Farrell (an excellent Colm Meaney) is the best culprit for redundancy, with a succinct argument – ‘Just Sack Pat’, scrawled in red marker pen on a flip chart.

Later, Pat reacts violently and besieges the radio station, demanding that Alan’s appointed as chief hostage negotiator. It’s time for Norfolk’s favourite son to forget about his Nandos Efficiency System, Roachford sing-alongs and radio discussions...

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa – first look review
The cinematic debut of Steve Coogan's bumbling talk show host is a quietly audacious triumph

You'd expect an Alan Partridge movie to be funny. You wouldn't expect it to be a coup de cinema. And yet, in its own superficially low-brow, cheapo way, Alpha Papa is exactly that. It's a Fabergé egg disguised as a Kinder Surprise; an intricate piece of engineering done up to look like a whoopee cushion.

Big-screen Partridge has been chatted about for a decade now, and concerns have stayed the same. Surely Alan's petty parochialism isn't cinematic catnip? Wouldn't such a radical shift of situation endanger the comedy?

But in his 21-year career, Alan has already proved unexpectedly flexible. He's straddled radio, TV, stage, print, online, news spoof, chat show, memoir, mockumentary, meta-farce. This quantity of content comes with a downside, of course – many fans are so invested they feel they know Partridge better than his creators.

Steve Coogan at an event for Tropic Thunder (2008)
Steve Coogan has spoken about the upcoming movie Alan Partridge is in Alpha Papa.

The comedian reprises his iconic TV role in the big-screen adaptation, which sees Partridge battling a fellow DJ in a Die Hard-style hostage drama.

On the film's influences, Coogan told Empire: "We're putting him into a situation.

"We had to make it filmic without throwing away the DNA that makes him Alan-like. So we kicked around a lot of ideas and ended up with something that's a bit Dog Day Afternoon and a bit Network. There is a threat level."

Director Declan Lowney explained: "Steve strives for stuff to be real, even with all the gags. That said, there's quite a bit of action. We've got violence, guns and heavy kissing."

The TV-to-film adaptation is written by Armando Iannucci, Neil Gibbons, Rob Gibbons and Coogan, and opens in UK cinemas on August 7.
