Brazil Wins Big at 40th Guadalajara Film Festival: Anna Muylaert’s ‘The Best Mother in the World,’ Gabriel Mascaro’s ‘The Blue Trail’ Take Major Honors

Mexico’s most prominent film festival, the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) lived up to its renown, scoring massive attendance for its milestone 40th edition, which wrapped June 14.

Led by festival director Estrella Araiza, the annual film event in Mexico’s second largest city reported 29,599 screening admissions, 7,209 participants in masterclasses and panels, and 1,473 accredited guests and industry professionals. Its inauguration fiesta alone, which featured live music and Lucha Libre, is said to have lured up to 3,500 attendees.

With the new genre cinema sidebar this year, won by Germán Tejada’s “The Innocents,” the festival marked 10 competitive sections. The Iberoamerican section was dominated by Brazil, with Best Fiction Film going to Gabriel Mascaro’s Berlin Special Jury prizewinner “The Blue Trail” and Anna Muylaert’s “The Best Mother in the World,” winning Best Screenplay, Cinematography and Performance for lead Shirley Cruz. Telefilm Canada and the Talent Fund are backing 17 film teams behind first features highlighting the country’s diverse storytelling communities including one with Guy Maddin on board as executive producer.

Maddin, whose Cannes entry Rumours is being positioned in the awards conversation, is on board the English-language dramedy Hue & Cry from director Maziyar Khatam. No further details were available at time of writing.

Sound Editors Planning Silent Protest at Oscars Over Live Telecast Cuts

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.

A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.

Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”

More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.
