‘Every actor likes to play a villain’: Ron Howard on playing himself in ‘The Studio’
Image
Ron Howard has a pretty busy day job: As the co-chair of Imagine, he’s constantly juggling a packed slate of projects, from features to documentaries to his own films.

Turns out he also has quite a side hustle as a cameo performer.

“People are always asking me if I want to act, and my pat answer is, 'The only way I'd make time for it in my schedule is if [my daughter] Bryce [Dallas Howard] asked me to act in something she was directing,'” he tells Gold Derby, adding with a laugh: “I think my wife, Cheryl, would start leaning on me to figure out the schedule to make that happen.”

So he has been flattered when approached over the years, though he won’t name names, especially since those parts ultimately went to others.

But then there are the roles that only he can play: himself.

“I’ve done a fair amount of it,...

Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Rookie Season 7 Episode 15 “A Deadly Secret.”] The Rookie has fun with its latest documentary-style episode — and it’s one that brings a key revelation for exes Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) as well as may have just set up a storyline for Season 8. The LAPD investigates when Nolan’s (Nathan Fillion) son’s ex, Abigail (Madeline Coghlan), goes missing, and it leads them to the abandoned ward of Westview. There, Tim and Lucy encounter a kind of truth serum that leads to a few confessions, including his most embarrassing memory and the fact that she’s already forgiven him for their breakup — and apparently a conversation about potential baby names. When news of the chemicals that poisoned the ward reaches serial killer Glasser (Seth Gabel) in prison, he even starts pondering a new defense. Below, showrunner Alexi Hawley (who guest stars as the documentary’s interviewer) talks...

The Rookie Boss Previews ‘Spooky’ Documentary Episode — #Chenford ‘Lie Detector Sequel’ Included!

ABC’s The Rookie has scared up another reason to subject Nolan, Harper et al to documentary cameras.

The light procedural’s previous documentary-format episodes involved a former child actor turned cult leader, the murder of the director of onetime team member Aaron Thorsen’s reality show, and the truly rare instance of two cops arresting criminals (“Dim” and “Juicy”) who looked just like them.

Will James Die on ‘The Rookie’? Plus, When ABC Drama Returns
Image
The Rookie isn’t about to devastate Nyla (Mekia Cox) just after she caught the serial killer, is it? Glasser (Seth Gabel), who she’d been keeping an eye on for a few episodes, is finally dealt with, but now, her husband James’ (Arjay Smith) life is hanging in the balance. The Rookie is not new on March 4 (due to Donald Trump’s address), meaning fans are left with the cliffhanger from Season 7 Episode 8 for another week. Episode 9, titled “The Kiss,” will air on March 11. Episode 8 left off with a major cliffhanger. During a wildfire (the episode was filmed before the California wildfires), James organized and ran the shelter for those who had to evacuate their homes. Kylie (Maria Zhang) came in to volunteer and shared that she hadn’t been at the center lately because she’d been going through a lot. James then intervened when he saw a guy,...

'The Rookie' Shouldn't Be Done With Its Serial Killer Plot Just Yet
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 7, Episode 8.Every television drama needs a good villain. Police procedurals especially depend on a convincing bad guy to create intriguing and suspenseful storylines and lots of high-octane action sequences. ABC's hit drama, The Rookie, has certainly had some seriously great villains throughout the years. But the addition of Liam Glasser (Seth Gabel) in Season 7 has been one of the best so far. That's why it's troubling that the series seems to be wrapping up Glasser's storyline much too quickly. The Rookie crew needs some criminals to chase, and locking Glasser up prematurely would make for a boring remainder of the season.

Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Rookie Season 7 Episode 5 “Til Death.”] Don’t mess with Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox). That’s what the latest episode of The Rookie proves. It was in Episode 4 that the LAPD discovered there’s an unidentified serial killer — while apprehending Harrison Novak (Noel Fisher) — and Nyla ended up in her own mini-horror movie; she was stabbed with a needle and temporarily paralyzed. And so when she returns to work in Episode 5, she’s very determined to find who was responsible. “After having something so traumatic happen to her, she is now jolted into action,” Cox explains on TV Insider’s Booked: The Rookie Aftershow. (Watch the full video above.) Nyla trusts her gut when it tells her that the man they think could be responsible for the killings isn’t and instead, it’s Liam (Seth Gabel), whose vending machine company supplies the hospital they were investigating when she was attacked.

Netflix's The Watcher Star Shares Disappointing Update on Season 2
Image
Naomi Watts, the star of Netflix's hit thriller The Watcher, just dropped some bad news regarding the highly anticipated second season.

While stopping by Entertainment Weekly's TIFF studio to promote her new movie The Friend, which has been playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, and reuniting with her co-star Bobby Cannavale, Watts told EW, "There hasn't been any real movement on it yet."

Related The Watcher Season 2 Is Short-Sighted

The Watcher was approved for a Season 2, which seems short-sighted and unnecessary when the finale didn't leave the story with much to expand on.

The question now for Watts: Do you have any sense of where season 2 of the Ryan Murphy/Ian Brennan-created series is? Unfortunately, the 55-year-old actress reports that she's still in the dark. "I don't have one, if there is one. I wish I could," she said to EW. "It was so fun, right?...

“American Horror Stories: Huluween Event” Review – A Surprise Halloween Highlight
Image
Season three of ‘American Horror Stories’ isn’t afraid to push some uncomfortable buttons, delivering some of its creepiest stories ever.

It can be increasingly easy to write off American Horror Stories, especially when a middling season of American Horror Story proper is currently airing. American Horror Stories began with a rocky start that was too indebted to the franchise’s past. However, it’s gradually become an underrated destination for heightened, campy tales of terror that aren’t bogged down by the plotting and structural issues that so-often hurt American Horror Story’s seasonal narratives. Not only is American Horror Stories’ third season a consistent batch of terrifying tales, but it also contains some of its best work.

“Bestie” is one of American Horror Stories’ strongest episodes and exactly the type of tale that this series should be telling. It’s an incredibly uncomfortable experience, from start to finish,...

Salem Recap & Ending Explained
Image
"Salem" was a unique and boundary-pushing series that blended horror, fantasy, and romance, leaving audiences completely bewitched. Despite high critical praise, the show struggled to find a large audience, but it paved the way for other shows to follow in its footsteps. The series finale of "Salem" was dark and twisted, with characters like Cotton sacrificing himself and Mary refusing to complete the ritual, symbolizing her transformation from villain to hero.

A proper Salem recap must cover not only the shocking twists and turns of the show's three seasons but also the hellfire and brimstone ending that left many completely bewitched. Debuting in 2014, the WGN America series Salem is set in the eponymous town during the 17th century and follows a coven of powerful witches who secretly rule the colonial village. Unflinching in its approach, the series established a unique tone that blends horror, fantasy, and a touch of romance into one exciting package.

‘The Mandalorian’ EP & Director Rick Famuyiwa On ‘Star Wars’ Series Western Evolution & What’s Next – Crew Call Podcast
Image
On today’s episode of Crew Call we talk with The Mandalorian EP and director of season 3 episodes one, seven and eight, Rick Famuyiwa.

Like the Westerns that Star Wars itself is based on, season 3 continued to dwell in that genre as it focused on Bounty Hunter Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) unification with the Mandalorians. Of note here is the redemption of the tribe’s former leader Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff). Famuyiwa says we see “what she lost and what she’s gained, in terms of the trust from her people and her own leadership.”

(L-r): A Bartender Droid (Seth Gabel), Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal)

Famuyiwa explains that just as “Westerns started to grow and go beyond their rugged individualism to how we make a society work” so does The Mandalorian in season 3.

The Mandalorian Recap: Season 3's Best Episode Delivers a Big Payoff — and Gives Grogu a New Name?
Image
The Mandalorian this week served up several “Special” guest stars, answered a big question about the Darksaber, and for good measure gave Grogu a shining moment.

“Guns for Hire,” directed by franchise vet Bryce Dallas Howard, opened by catching us up with Axe Woves, who since peacing out on Bo-Katan is now in command of Moff Gideon’s light cruiser and doing work-for-hire with Koska Reeves et al. We first see Axe pulling over a Quarren captain who had abducted a Mon Calamari prince (with whom she was having a love affair).

Great Scott! The Mandalorian served up a “Special” guest star or three with the sixth episode of Season 3.

The episode title, “Guns For Hire,” referred to what Bo-Katan’s Nite-Owl pals are now up to, but it just as much could be a nod to the many unannounced guest stars, which rolled out throughout what was arguably — faint praise alert? — the best episode of the season, directed by franchise vet Bryce Dallas Howard.
