Unsolved Mysteries returns with more bizarre and disturbing cases in volume 5, including cattle mutilation incidents that have plagued farmers for decades. The mystery documentary TV series, created by John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer, originally premiered in January 1987 on NBC before being tossed from network to network for the next few decades. Netflix rebooted Unsolved Mysteries in 2020 and has released 30 episodes (including "Mysterious Mutilations") ever since.

Unsolved Mysteries volume 5, episode 3 revolves around the strange phenomenon of similar cattle mutilations that have been occurring since before the 1970s. As one could infer since the Netflix show features the case, it remains unsolved to this day. Who Was Jack The Ripper? Unsolved Mysteries' 5 Suspects Explained
Image
The following article contains mentions of suicide.

John Pizer, the Leather Apron, was wrongly suspected by London police and quickly ruled out as Jack the Ripper. Montague John Druitt was a serious suspect who died by suicide but the police lacked concrete evidence linking him to the murders. Francis Tumblety, an American fraud, was arrested in London for the murders but escaped police custody on bail.

Unsolved Mysteries dives deep into the Jack the Ripper case (perhaps one of the biggest unsolved cases in history) in volume 4, including exploring five suspects who have been named over the years. The Netflix true crime documentary series was created by John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer and originally premiered in January 1987 on ABC. Since then, Unsolved Mysteries has jumped around networks and streaming services from ABC to CBS to Lifetime to Spike and, most recently, to Netflix. Robert Stack in Unsolved Mysteries (1987)
Unsolved Mysteries (1987-1999): Gone But Not Forgotten
Robert Stack in Unsolved Mysteries (1987)
True Crime is a part of everyday media that the TV series, specials, films, and documentaries all about it have been around forever. But actually, that’s not the case. The format we now see, wasn’t the norm at all in the 80s when Unsolved Mysteries began its iconic run. A weekly series built around cases and interviews with the people who were a part of them, re-enacting the crimes…had never been done before.

But then one day a series came along that would not only showcase True Crime but would also give us ghosts, UFOs, and all points in between. Not only that, but the theme song would cause Ptsd in most kids my age who had the fortune or misfortune to hear it. That series is Unsolved Mysteries, a series so popular that it changed not only pop culture but the way investigations within law enforcement were conducted.

Why the New Unsolved Mysteries Made Some Big Changes to the Beloved Series
Robert Stack
For many, the appearance of Robert Stack, clad a trench coat, on a fog-filled soundstage could only mean one thing: They were home sick from school and watching an Unsolved Mysteries marathon, certain a mysterious fate was about to befall them in the middle of the day. Terry Dunn Meurer, co-creator of Unsolved Mysteries, has heard that scenario many times before. "We have, actually, including from my children," Meurer laughed. The series, which ran on and off and across a variety of networks including NBC, CBS and Lifetime from 1987-2010, is back with a new season on Netflix. Meurer, who co-created the series with John Cosgrove, returned to executive produce the 12 new episodes for the streamer alongside...

Unsolved Mysteries Review (Spoiler-Free): True Crime With More Questions Than Answers
Unsolved Mysteries (2020)
This Unsolved Mysteries review contains no spoilers.

Unsolved Mysteries Season 1

The Netflix rebooted series Unsolved Mysteries could really use someone like Robert Stack to lead audiences through these mysterious cold cases. He may not have been the biggest named crime-fighting icon, but he brought his Elliot Ness from the original The Untouchables to the scene. He also brought his trench coat. True crime shows are coming from all directions, and most of them follow a similar pattern which was laid out by Unsolved Mysteries. What set it apart were that voice and that trench coat.

Stack hosted the groundbreaking investigative series between 1987 and 2002. It was also hosted by Raymond Burr, Karl Malden, Virginia Madsen and Dennis Farina. No one quite brought the suspenseful gravitas Stack did. He added an element which the new series sorely needs: spookiness and gravelly innuendo. He knew how to make your fingers clutch the edge of the sofa in suspense.

Unsolved Mysteries: Prepare Yourself for the Return of Creepy Casefiles (and That Theme Song!) in Netflix Reboot
Image
The stories in Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot are new. The sense of delicious dread you feel when you hear the unsettling intro music… is not.

That’s part of the reason why the reboot of the 1980s-’90s nonfiction series, which makes its debut Wednesday on the streaming service, feels so much of a piece with its predecessor. After all, executive producer/co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer tells TVLine, “the premise of the show has always been: Someone somewhere knows the truth, and perhaps you can help solve a mystery. And that has not changed with the new iteration on Netflix.

Netflix Is Reviving Unsolved Mysteries with Stranger Things Producer Shawn Levy
One of my favorite shows to watch when I was growing up was the Robert Stack-hosted true crime and paranormal series Unsolved Mysteries. I was fascinated by that show, and I’ve recently been watching episodes again on Amazon Prime.

I’m excited to report that Netflix is looking to revive the series! Stranger Things director and producer Shawn Levy is behind the revival. and he will be overseeing the revamp.

Deadline revealed that this will be a 12-part show that, like the original, “will use re-enactments in a documentary format to profile real-life mysteries and unsolved crimes, lost love, cases involving missing persons and unexplained paranormal events.” Each of the episodes will focus on one mystery.

Netflix Reboots True Crime & Paranormal Series "Unsolved Mysteries" With "Stranger Things" EP Shawn Levy
Unsolved Mysteries (1987)
Exclusive: Unsolved Mysteries is back after Netflix revived the long-running true crime and paranormal franchise.

The series, which was hosted by Robert Stack and ran for over 500 episodes between 1987 and 2010, is being refreshed by Stranger Things Ep Shawn Levy and his company 21 Laps Entertainment and Netflix.

I hear that Levy is overseeing the revamp in association with Cosgrove-Meurer Productions, the original production company run by the show’s creators John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer. The latter will show run the series with Cosgrove, Levy and Josh Barry as exec producers. Robert Wise is co-exec producer and showrunner with Dunn Meurer.

The 12-part show will use re-enactments in a documentary format to profile real-life mysteries and unsolved crimes, lost love, cases involving missing persons and unexplained paranormal events. Each episode will focus on one mystery. In the original series, actors played the victims, criminals and witnesses but family members and police were regularly interviewed.

But, even though the show hasn't produced new episodes years, it still airs in syndication. So, naturally, people are curious about Robert's career and life because viewers are continually learning about the true crime mysteries years after they initially aired. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) However, if you're watching Unsolved Mysteries in 2018 — there's a good chance you will watch a host that isn't Robert as well. The late Raymond Burr and Karl Malden presented the show alongside Robert in 1987. Later,...
