Bob Costas issued a warning against legalized sports betting while speaking to “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday, emphasizing its impact on families.
“In the big picture, the house always wins,” he said, “[and] now you’ve got young guys with a phone in their hand, it’s right there. And some of those people are going to become addicted to it and it’s going to ruin some lives, that’s inevitable.”
Costas, who has been open about his father’s own sports gambling addiction in the past, also admitted to Welker he could not read gambling promos while calling games for the Major League Baseball Network.
“I just couldn’t in good conscience encourage people to do something which I know — for some of them it’s obviously just a little recreation and it’s fine, but there’s an insidious aspect to it that I didn...

Bob Costas has a chilling warning for the future of journalism.
On Monday, while accepting a lifetime achievement Mirror Award at a ceremony at the Edison Ballroom in New York (via CNN), the storied sports caster warned the audience of “ongoing assaults” on free press by the Trump administration, adding that “democracy as we know it” is “under attack.”
“What’s happening now are not matters of small degree,” Costas said. “They’re different in kind to anything certainly in my lifetime and maybe in the history of the American presidency.”
Costas made it clear that the major news outlets are not “without fault” and that “legacy or mainstream media” have their fair share of “blind spots” and “misplaced narratives.” He added, however, “if the answer to that is Maga media, if the answer to that is Donald Trump’s view of the world, which is only through a prism of what benefits him…...

Late-night shows simply aren’t the durable roosts they used to be.
Taylor Tomlinson, the host of CBS’ “After Midnight,” is the latest host to exit the wee-hours space as more comedians see better career opportunities in the worlds of stand-up, podcasts and other creator-based media. Tomlinson felt more drawn to stand-up comedy and other potential opportunities, says one person familiar with her thinking, and felt the demands of a regular network show would crimp her ability to consider other projects.
“I am doing less stand-up than I was [before hosting ‘After Midnight’]. I was on tour three weekends a month for years, so to take this job and to know that I was gonna have to scale back a little bit was a very difficult decision for me. I wasn’t sure if it was something I wanted to do or not, because stand-up is the most important things to me.

Charlie Rose has reached a settlement with three former CBS employees who sued him in 2018 for sexual harassment.
The accusers, Katherine Brooks Harris, Chelsea Wei and Sydney McNeal, alleged that Rose touched them on their thighs, kissed their cheeks and made numerous inappropriate sexual remarks.
Rose was fired from his job as a co-host of “CBS This Morning” in November 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement, when the Washington Post reported on harassment allegations from eight women. Bloomberg TV and PBS also canceled his long-running interview show, “Charlie Rose,” which was produced by Rose’s company.
Rose publicly apologized for his “inappropriate behavior,” saying he had behaved “insensitively.”
The Post followed up in May 2018, citing 27 complaints stretching back to the 1980s. The three plaintiffs were included in that report, and filed suit shortly thereafter.

The last of TV’s big five-original-nights-a-week late-night show is giving up 24 hours out of its schedule.
NBC will move “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to four nights a week, the latest in a series of moves across the late-night daypart aimed at shoring up the economics of the programs as audiences move away from watching TV in linear fashion. Like its late-night rivals, “Tonight” will air in repeats on Fridays.
CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” are already on a four-originals-per-week schedule.
NBC has been examining costs in late-night in recent months. Earlier this year, the network decided to eliminate the house band from Meyers’ 12:35 a.m. hour, a move that recently went into effect. But all of the networks have tested similar maneuvers in recent years.

One of America's strangest celebrity sagas came to an abrupt, anticlimactic close when O.J. Simpson died at the age of 76 on April 10, 2024. The Heisman Trophy-winning running back from the University of Southern California became a professional football phenomenon during his 11-season tenure with the Buffalo Bills. He was blindingly handsome and charismatic, as comfortable in front of a camera as he was breaking tackles on the gridiron. Unlike Jim Brown, Simpson chose to keep playing football when he embarked on his acting career; and though Simpson was typically cast in supporting roles, they were often high-profile productions (namely the Best Picture-nominated "The Towering Inferno" and the Emmy-winning miniseries "Roots").
When Simpson retired, he continued to act while staying close to football as an on-field reporter for NBC. You never knew where The Juice was going to turn up, but you were never unhappy to see him. This was especially true...

NBCUniversal is testing a new game for the Paris Olympics.
The Comcast-backed media conglomerate has for years launched every Summer Games with primetime coverage of the Opening Ceremonies that typically feature a top sportscaster like Mike Tirico or Bob Costas alongside a popular news anchor such as Savannah Guthrie or Katie Couric. In 2024, the company is blowing up the format.
Kelly Clarkson and Peyton Manning will co-host the glitzy launch of NBC’s17 days of Olympics coverage alongside Tirico, with Guthrie and her “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb reporting on the spectacle — a parade of boats on the River Seine — along the route. The move adds some celebrity power to the broadcast at a time when more TV networks are trying to broaden the appeal of their sports portfolios and lure new crowds to games and contests of all sorts — and amortize the costly rights fees required to show them in the process.

The host, who was joined by Bob Costas, an American sportscaster, and Caitlin Flanagan, a writer and social critic, brought up the superstar who has been making headlines recently for her global Eras Tour, Grammy wins and for her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“This is a national news story in the sense that this is a person who could literally swing the election,” Maher said. “I don’t know what that says about this country, but I would just say to the ‘Maga [Make America Great Again]’ people, ‘You should be very careful attacking her because this is someone who transcends parties.'”

Bill Maher is often confronted with the accusation that he’s switched from an ultra-liberal to a more conservative stance. He may have added fuel to that argument with the subect of Friday’s Real Time, which focused on what he called “Biden’s Brain.” It’s a topic that broke out this week from hushed backrooms to the mainstream, thanks to a Dept. of Justice report and the President’s own attempts to refute it.
Maher started his jabs at Biden in the monologue. Talking about the President’s decline of a Super Bowl interview, Biden noted, “It’s not like they were asking him to appear on Dancing With The Stars.”
He then ran down a few of Biden’s confusions, including mixing up politicians. He also said Biden blew his press conference to fight back against the DoJ report when he walked in the room and asked,...

When the program returns from a hiatus, it is expected to rely heavily on a team of correspondents to lead each night, according to three people familiar with the matter, though it is not clear if the network has struck upon its final assemblage of talent. “Daily Show” could also rely on guest appearances by some of the celebrities who have hosted the program since Trevor Noah, the last permanent presence behind the desk, quit abruptly in late 2022.

MLB Network’s “Prime 9” countdown show is returning to the schedule.
The program, which has been off the programming list since 2015, is set to return on Monday, December 11, with noted sportscaster Bob Costas as the host. During the show, MLB Network offers the “nine best” in a wide array of different categories, including the nine best players at each on-field position in the sport.
““When MLB Network started in 2009, and for the first few years after that, Prime 9 was a signature program for the network. There were dozens of various categories, but eventually the inventory ran its course But in the decade-plus since then, new players, new baseball issues, new records, new “curses” broken and extended and more have emerged,” says Costas in a statement. “All sports have histories, debates, and generational comparisons. But baseball has the richest history of any American sport. And has more ongoing debates and “all-time lists” than any other sport.

Washington — The Kennedy Center Honors was a decidedly tuneful affair, with musical talents representing four of its five recipients – vocalists and/or songwriters Dionne Warwick, Renée Fleming, Queen Latifah and Barry Gibb — along with actor/comedian/filmmaker Billy Crystal.
The program, in its 46th year, followed the traditional format that showcases tributes to each honoree by artists and celebs whose identities are undisclosed in advance. It kicked off with a lively parade of dancers down the aisles, led by emcee and former honoree Gloria Estefan and accompanied by Sheila E on drums — a first for the event. Produced again by Done and Dusted Inc., it will air Dec. 27 on CBS.
Omitted this year was one familiar staple at the event – the inclusion of brief video biographies of each honoree that emphasized their childhoods and routes to success. Instead, minimal use of videos embellished career highlights.

The newest group of Kennedy Center honorees, including comedian Billy Crystal and actor Queen Latifah, were feted Sunday night at a star-studded event commemorating their lifetime achievement in arts and entertainment.
Opera singer Renée Fleming, music star Barry Gibb and prolific hitmaker Dionne Warwick were also honored at the black-tie gala. Each received personalized tributes, including appearances and performances that are typically kept secret from the honorees themselves.
President Joe Biden welcomed the honorees to the White House before the event, saying the performing arts “reflect who we are as Americans and as human beings.”
The honorees “have helped shape how we see ourselves, how we see each other and how we see our world,” said Biden who then introduced this year’s class with a set of glowing superlatives about their work.

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

It’d be easy to dismiss them as merely Tom and Jerry with Jersey accents, but actors Frank Vincent and Joe Pesci’s relationship is a testament to loyalty and hard work. Together, the duo staged some of the most memorable mob-movie scenes as they perpetuated the ugliest grudge match in movie history.
On-screen, Pesci usually got the upper hand in these blood-curdling brawls, introducing Vincent’s cranium to a taxi door in Raging Bull, before dispatching him in Goodfellas with the help of a kitchen knife. Vincent got his shots in, planning a one-way trip for Pesci’s character to a shallow grave in a corn field in Casino five years later. Any time you saw these two guys on screen, you knew it was bound to get nasty.
The two worked together in several projects, none more iconic than Martin Scorsese’s 1990 mob saga Goodfellas. Opposite of long-time collaborator Pesci,...

One of the most talked-about movies at this year’s Venice Film Festival was Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s vividly realized portrait of how 14-year-old Priscilla Presley fell under the spell of Elvis Presley, the rock & roll icon who was 24 when they first met. The filmmaker has earned her best reviews in years for the drama, and its star, Cailee Spaeny, took home the fest’s Best Actress award.

On May 30, 2023, Diamond Sports, the owner of the regional sports network Bally Sports San Diego, failed to make a payment to the Padres, one of the local teams that underpins its lineup.
That’s when Billy Chambers and his four-person team at Major League Baseball headquarters in New York stepped in.
Twenty-four hours after the final Bally Sports San Diego-produced Padres game, MLB was producing the game itself, with the same announcers, but with new graphics, and even a dramatic sizzle opener, narrated by Bob Costas. (The former NBC Sports anchor is on contract for the MLB Network.)
“When we found out that we were going to have the game, 24 hours in advance, we sprung into action. We had meetings with the crew, with the talent, we had got all of our graphics loaded into the truck,” Chambers recalls. “Yeah, it was an absolute fire drill.”

Sports films have a history of casting professional athletes, and Moneyball is no exception. Casting sports icons can be a challenge, as finding an actor who can both resemble their physical stature and capture their personality, is incredibly difficult. But Moneyball isn't a tale of sporting legends or of greatness, it's a film about underdogs, and the use of intelligence and ingenuity to overcome unfairness and difficulty in the world of professional sports. The film isn't centered around sports scenes, like the traditional baseball movie, but rather around the work in the general manager's office and scouting room. Nevertheless, the baseball scenes are realistically performed by the professional players involved.
In the film's early production, Steven Soderbergh was set to direct, and he planned to build a cast of primarily real MLB players. In the final film, which was written by Aaron Sorkin and starred Brad Pitt, many of these players were replaced by actors,...

Eleven seasons. Two hundred and seventy-five episodes. Twenty-eight Emmy Awards. Yes, “Cheers” was one of the longest-running, most successful – and most beloved – situation comedies in television history. And a milestone is about to be reached this weekend: 30 years since the series finale aired on NBC. Saturday marks precisely 30 years since the show bid prime time adieu on May 20, 1993, the last time Sam (Ted Danson) poured Norm (George Wendt) a glass of beer at the famed Boston bar.
To celebrate the event, Pluto TV’s Sitcom Legends channel will be airing a marathon of the entire final “Cheers” season, which comprises a whopping 26 episodes in the era before streaming, this Saturday the 20th. It begins at 7 a.m. Pt/10 a.m. Et with the first episode of Season 11 and continues in order through the finale. It doesn’t get any more delightful than the surprising, warm documentary about beloved baseball legend Yogi Berra, It Ain’T Over. Surprising? Yes, as this well-made bio documentary looks back at Yogi’s outstanding baseball career as player, something overshadowed and even forgotten by fans, as he became best known as a lovable pop culture icon and for his “Yogi-isms,” quotable phrases like “it’s deja vu all over again,” “when you come to a fork in the road, take it” and “it ain’t over until it’s over.” Yet Yogi Berra was a baseball player whose record put him among the greats of the game, As actor and baseball fan Billy Crystal put it, Yogi was “the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball.”
The numbers are impressive, jaw-dropping even, considering what we might think we know about Yogi Berra.

"He was the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball." "He's just a gentle, kind soul..." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official trailer for It Ain't Over, a documentary about the baseball legend Yogi Berra. After initially premiering at the 2022 Nantucket Film Festival last year, it stopped by the Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year and will open in May in limited theaters. The documentary film gives "Yogi" Berra his due recapping the illustrious life of a "bad-ball hitting" catcher (for the Yankees), who was also a D-Day veteran, loving husband and father and, yes, product endorser and originator (mostly) of his own brand of proverbs that are now ingrained into everyday life. This features interviews with Billy Crystal, Bob Costas, Vin Scully, Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Joe Girardi, Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Tony Kubek, Bobby Richardson, Suzyn Waldman, and Lindsay Berra. “Bob Costas and his team have delivered insightful and quality sports programming with ‘Back on the Record,’ and we are proud of its multiple Sports Emmy nominations,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “Bob is an important part of HBO Sports’ history and “Back on the Record” was an excellent chapter in that story.”
The talk show, which offered four episodes each season, featured the sportscaster and journalist in extended one-on-one conversations with sports, entertainment and pop culture figures. It was Costas’ third show on HBO.

Sportscaster Bob Costas hilariously misidentified MLB star Shane Bieber for Justin Bieber.
While providing commentary during a post-season baseball game on Friday, the iconic sports commentator accidentally identified the Cleveland Guardians pitcher as the “Peaches” music star.
“Justin Bieber just threw his 84th pitch,” Costas said during the team’s American League Division Series game against the New York Yankees before taking a pause. “Did I actually call Shane Bieber, Justin Bieber? I vowed that would not happen.

“I’m sure it’s not the first time it’s happened in his life,” he joked before wondering out loud “if [Bieber’s] watching the game.”
Costas, 70, then corrected himself to clarify the mishap for viewers.
“Shane Bieber, ladies and gentlemen,” he said.

Baseball fans were celebrating when veteran sportscaster Bob Costas announced that he would be part of the broadcast team for the Yankees vs. Guardians Division Series, marking the first time Costas is calling a playoff series in 22 years.
But his time away from the booth may have also confused Costas a little bit. The legendary broadcaster slipped up during Game 2 of the Yankees vs. Guardians game Friday, referring to Cleveland pitcher Shane Bieber as Justin Bieber.

A promotion for House of the Dragon during last night’s New York Yankees-Cleveland Guardians playoff baseball game on TBS is continuing to draw online eyerolls the day after the stunt.
With parent company Warner Bros Discovery looking to make use of every pixel of promotional real estate, the notion of plugging the Game of Thrones prequel during a widely viewed live event like the Major League Baseball playoffs isn’t a surprise. Fox, after all, has pioneered the notion of wedging network pom-pom moments into its fall baseball coverage. But what mostly soured a vocal assortment of viewers and media watchers was the way the plug was executed.
Bob Costas, who was handling play-by-play duties, introduced the 40-second bit with a setup that was deadpan but resonated to some as earnest, especially among Yankee fans living in a city that has been the epicenter of a number of actual emergencies.
