Updated, with comments from press secretary: Donald Trump on Monday will make his first visit to the Kennedy Center since he ousted leadership and ensured that he would be chairman of the D.C. arts institution.
While the center has been beset by cancellations of major shows by artists protesting the Trump takeover, the president told reporters that “we have to straighten it out. It is not a good situation. Like everything else in this country.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the president “hopes to restore arts and culture that embrace American tradition, not disparage it, as we have unfortunately seen over the past several years.” She said that Trump would do a tour of the center and would “perhaps be discussing some future plays and musicals and theatrical programs that the center will be hosting under his new leadership.”

The Disney Princess brand is one of The Walt Disney Company's hottest properties, but not every one of its endeavors has been a success. Although a princess (Snow White) was the beginning of Disney feature-length animated films, centering on one doesn't always guarantee success. Sleeping Beauty, for example, did not fare well at the box office upon its first release. Still, when Disney was in its Dark Ages in the 1980s, it was another princess (Ariel) featured in The Little Mermaid that kicked off Disney's Renaissance. And so, in the early 2000s, when Disney chose to build an entire brand around its catalog of princesses, statistically, they were hedging their bets on a relatively safe property.

Audience sensibilities have definitely changed over the years when it comes to movies. Jokes that people used to find funny in comedies are now considered somewhat taboo. The characters in these films may use language that is considered offensive by today's standards. The same goes for the action genre. No longer is there a sexualized damsel in distress waiting for a man to save her.
Perhaps no genre has changed more, however, than animated films. Take, for instance, old Disney movies. There are many films released between the '40s and the '90s that are shockingly insensitive when it comes to their content. There's no way these controversial Disney movies would be released today. Viewers have become more progressive about the potentially harmful subtext in films, especially those targeted at children.

An artist on Instagram transforms Aurora into a live-action Disney princess. Elle Fanning portrayed Aurora in Maleficent and its sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. There has yet to be a Disney live-action remake via Aurora's Pov from Sleeping Beauty, but the character has appeared in the reimagined Maleficent movies.
Sleeping Beauty artwork showcases an incredible transformation of Aurora in live-action. The 1959 animated movie follows a young princess, sheltered from the outside world, who punctures her finger on a spindle and succumbs to a curse placed upon her by the villainous Evil Queen, Maleficent. Mary Costa voices Aurora, while the rest of the cast includes Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy, Barbara Jo Allen, and Bill Shirley as Prince Phillip. Sleeping Beauty has not received an exact live-action remake, but the memorable antagonist did in the form of Disneys Maleficent.

Maleficent's role as a villain in Sleeping Beauty is reinterpreted in a theory that makes her actions more understandable. Maleficent may have cursed Aurora due to a broken promise made by her mother, Queen Leah. The theory adds depth to Maleficent's character, suggesting she desired acceptance and had powers beyond evil actions.
Maleficent is the villain in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, but one theory changes her role in the story enough to make viewers root for her after all these years. Disney is home to some of the most popular and beloved animated classics in film history, and the studio is best known for its princess movies. Among them is Sleeping Beauty, the studio’s third official Disney Princess. Released in 1959 and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, Eric Larson, and Les Clark, Sleeping Beauty is based on Charles Perrault’s 1697 fairy tale of the same name but with a couple of tweaks.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Sleeping Beauty has been beloved since its release in 1959. With stunning animation, an iconic story, and fascinating characters, it's no surprise that the film became an instant classic. While Sleeping Beauty introduced Aurora (Mary Costa) to the roster of Disney princesses, even more significantly, the film introduced Disney's most iconic villain. In one fell swoop, Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) became the most memorable part of the entire movie. Maleficent might be evil, but her character is a quintessential part of the film and has developed a following of her own. Sleeping Beauty shows Maleficent as a unique and powerful antagonist, and unlike other Disney villains, she's allowed to be terrifying as opposed to a joke.

Disney was, once upon a time, swarmed by critics for relying too heavily on the fairy tale adaptation strategy that they had all but patented in their earliest days. Eventually, the company broke this stride, evolving the formula and crafting new ones. Even still, throughout these early films and beyond into the modern era, the subtype of Disney Princess characters have cemented themselves as some of the company's proudest achievements.
Right alongside these princesses, there is often a prince. Whether or not this "prince" is a love interest, an actual child of royalty, or a hero at all, this subtype of characters consists largely of strong-willed, lovable, and flawed heroes -- or villains -- that play a significant role in the journey of another character, often, but not exclusively, princesses. Disney is one of the biggest names in the entertainment world, owning several companies like Marvel to produce killer movies. October 16, 2023, marked one hundred years of Disney, and hundreds of movies exist under the Disney name. With each film comes very iconic characters, but not all get as much recognition as they should, even with screen time.
That list of characters, of course, includes Disney's iconic Princesses. Even though there are dozens of strong, femme-presenting characters in the Disney repertoire, not all are considered princesses. There are some rules for a Disney Princess, which pretty much revolve around the marketability of the characters. A Disney Princess has to be female, human, and a main character in a non-sequel movie. The title is given or taken at Disney's discretion.

Disney's classics have been well-loved for years, but as Disney princesses continue to change over time and become more active characters in their own films, discussion surrounding princesses in earlier films has become more critical. From Snow White naively taking a bite of a suspicious apple to Cinderella’s passivity in waiting to be rescued, the choices that these princesses make, or do not make, have been called into question, especially compared to more active and recent Disney princesses. However, there is typically more to these fairy tales than meets the eye. And no Disney princess movie demonstrates this type of storytelling better than Sleeping Beauty. Despite being the focus of the fairy tale, the titular character is given the least amount of screen time among the main cast; she is on-screen for only about 18 minutes out of an 85-minute runtime and speaks her final line of dialogue halfway through.

New Sleeping Beauty cosplay is a perfect recreation of the Disney princess. Based on the 1697 fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault, Sleeping Beauty was adapted into an animated Disney movie in 1959 starring Mary Costa as the voice of Princess Aurora, also known as Briar Rose. The story revolves around the young princess who is cursed by the evil fairy Maleficent to fall into a deep sleep and can only be awakened by true love's kiss.

The Amy Adams led film is iconic for many reasons but the Enchanted voice cameos are a highlight that brings viewers back time after time. Though princess Giselle was infatuated with her classic prince charming, Edward, she is cared for and eventually falls in love with a divorce lawyer named Robert, who she ends up happily ever after with and in the real world. They've been a happy couple for a while by the time of the sequel, Disenchanted.
The film contains many Disney references including familiar names who lent their voice acting skills to classic Disney films, some surface-level allusions include a poisoned apple (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) and the sorceress transforming into a dragon (Sleeping Beauty). Other details are less noticeable, such as a restaurant being named Bella Notte in reference to the song from Lady and the Tramp. The cameos, however, are the film's best Easter eggs.

The trailers teased glimpses of Sleeping Beauty's iconic villainess, accompanied by a gothic cover of "Once Upon a Dream." Gone were the 1959 animated film's Technicolor wonders, replaced with shades of blacks and blues, while Lana del Rey's vocals enveloped Mary Costa and Bill Shirley's airy duet with jazz-club smokiness. Even when the sneak peek appeared to throw a bone of sympathy towards the titular evil character, it brooded with the faux-angst of 9th grade poetry. This was what you could expect from Maleficent — Disney's early bid for summer-film dominance,...

With anticipation building for Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent," due May 30, it's worth noting that the source of her live-action remake, Disney's animated "Sleeping Beauty," marks its 55th anniversary this week. Released on January 29, 1959, the movie was only a modest hit at the time, but over the years, it earned acclaim for its gorgeous wide-screen visuals, its memorable music, and its unforgettable villainess.
It's a movie you probably watched many times as a child, and yet there are still some things you probably don't know about "Sleeping Beauty," including its connections to Bugs Bunny, "The Andy Griffith Show," and the British royal family.
Here's a list of 25 such items you can stack on your spindle -- but be careful to shield your fingertip.
1. "Sleeping Beauty" is adapted from both the Charles Perrault and Brothers Grimm versions of the classic fairy tale. In Perrault, the princess's name is Aurora; in Grimm, it's Briar Rose.
